Usha Chilukuri Vance (née Chilukuri; born 1986) is an American lawyer and the wife of the junior United States Senator from Ohio, J. D. Vance.[2] On July 15, 2024, former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump selected her husband as the party's vice presidential candidate. If he is elected in November 2024, she would become the first woman of color to serve as Second Lady of the United States.
Personal life
The daughter of Indian immigrants who are both professors, Chilukuri attended Yale University, graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in history, with membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She then attended Cambridge University in England as a Gates Cambridge Scholar, receiving a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in 2010. In 2013, she earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Yale Law School, where she was the executive editor of the Yale Law Journal and a member of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology.[3]
Chilukuri met her future husband, author J.D. Vance, while they were students at Yale, a relationship encouraged by their professor Amy Chua.[4]
They married in 2014 in Kentucky, in an interfaith ceremony.[5][6] They have three children: Ewan (born 2017), Vivek (born 2020), and Mirabel (born 2021).[7][8] Chilukuri is Hindu and her husband is Catholic.[9][10]
Career
Chilukuri was a law clerk from 2014–15 for then–Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh and from 2017–18 for Chief Justice John Roberts.[11] She was admitted to the DC Bar in May 2019 and worked for the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP until July 2024.[12]
Chilukuri has served on the board of the Gates Cambridge Alumni Association and as secretary of the board of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.[13]
Portrayal in media
In Hillbilly Elegy, a film about the life of her husband, she was portrayed by actress Freida Pinto.
