A new Oxbridge user box

Medievalista...I am currently in the process of writing a user box for all of the colleges that are part of Oxbridge. This template is meant to replace your current college template. Please take a look at the work in progress and comment on it. My main concerns are college abbreviations and color choice. I am using scarf colors for the colleges. Help on map of Visigothic Spain

Hi, Medievalista! I'm currently in a project of making maps in svg format to cover almost the history of Portugal and Spain. I'm simply an amateur and history lover, so my maps are based in what I found in the Internet and books, searching for the most credible. I crossed with one of your maps, [1], but I have some doubts about it, which I ask your help to clarify them:

• Why you added Carpetania and Celtiberia to the province of Carthaginensis? Are they sub-regions of this province?
• Toletum is in Carpetania, so being the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, certainly is capital of the province of Carpetania. Is my assumption correct? So, Carthaginensis is a separate province?
• Cantabria and Basconia are separate provinces or one of them is a sub-region of the other? Which is which?
• Can you tell me the capital of each visigothic province? I want to add them to my map.
• Is this map accurate? Or there are doubts about the visigothic administrative division?

Olá, Alcides. I hope I can answer your questions properly:

• • Carpetania and Celtiberia were the traditional regions of central Iberia in Roman times. During the Visigothic period it seems that they were created as different areas splitting the Carthaginensis when this was controled by the Byzantines, with capitals in Toledo and Reccopolis, although it is not clear if they were ever truly independent administrative regions.
  • The capital of Carthaginensis was Cartagena, but the city was destroyed in the 620's by king Swinthila, although previously the ecclesiastical capital had been moved from there to Toledo (in 610), because until then the ecclesiastical capital of the province in which the visigothic kingdom was, was controled by the Byzantines (i.e. Cartagena). As a suggestion you may want to add Cartagena as a destroyed city indicating the date, in your map.
  • Cantabria and Basconia/Vasconia were two duchies created in the late seventh century, isnide the province of Tarraconensis.
  • The capitals of the provinces are the following:
    • Lusitania, Mérida
    • Baetica, Seville (later moved to Córdoba)
    • Carthaginensis, Cartagena (NB what I told you above)
    • Tarraconensis, Tarragona
    • Gallaecia, Braga

These were the capitals of the old Roman ecclesiastical provinces. The capitals of the purely administrative duchies, I'm not sure. But it maybe that Pamplona was the capital of Basconia and Auca that of Cantabria

• • The map is accurate as far a I know, but there is the problem regarding the continuity of provinces as a Roman administrative and Ecclesiastical divission and the new duchies that emerged as administrative divisions during the Gothic period.

Lastly, my map is a poor, .png map, even if widely used, a vector image could be better. If you show me your map and let me help you in the design, maybe it would be better if your image substitutes my old one!--Xaverius 12:56, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Medievalista. It's been a long time since we talked, but finally I concluded my vector map based on your map and comments. Surprisingly, I couldn't replace your file (it gave an error - MIME type not supported), so I uploaded a brand new file. You can see it in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Iberia_700.svg. I have some remarks for which I call your help (again):

• The administrative borders of your map are not accurate and I don't know if these followed the course of the main rivers. Please tell me if they are more or less correct.
• I put the comment you proposed for the city of Cartagena, but can you tell me when the capital of Baetica moved from Seville to Córdoba? I can put a comment also in these cities.
• As you can see, all the cities have the Visigothic and current name (unless they are the same). Please tell me if they are correct.
• I don't have the administrative capitals for Asturias, Cantabria and Vasconia, as you said they are unknown.
