How you can help

Heyo Wikitarded. Let's hope you're still reading this. I want to apologize on behalf of the Wikipedia community for your treatment today. We dropped the ball here, but everyone makes mistakes, so maybe you'll give us another look. Right now there's a discussion on the administrator's noticeboard about your block. Some editors, myself included, are working to get you unblocked so that you can resume editing. Wikipedia polices require that in most cases the same admin who blocked you is the one to unblock you, so it might not work out. Don't despair, though.

If, 24 hours from now, you are still blocked, you will be able to create a new account with a different username. You'll also be able to edit again without logging in if you choose. If you create another account, please send me a message on my talk page and I'll be happy to help you get started editing.

Anyway, sorry about the confusion. Cheers, ➪HiDrNick! 23:41, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay

You should now be able to register a fresh account. You may want to read our username policy first, to make sure this doesn't happen again. DS 23:57, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New Edit

Thank you Dr Nick for all your help. I was going to log in and complain to the web administrator, and I was very pleasantly surprised to see all of the support. I had no idea how many people were involved in this project, and how much a few of them really care.

I tried to leave a message on your page but it says I'm still blocked. I have two articles that I think would be really good editions, that I would like to see on here. I am an engineer and I work in precision industrial spheres. There is a huge market for these types of balls (grinding media, bearings, non-return valves, ect). There is basically no information on Wikipedia on these subjects. In fact, our company supplies some large name chocolate manufacturing companies with chrome steel AISI 52100 balls, used to grind cacao into chocolate liqueur. There is some very reliable sources like ABMA (American ball bearing association) and in Germany DIN standards. This entire industry is missing from the Encyclopedia. Also, I knew the construction personnel of the MGM grand -- they used some of our product. It was a very innovate project that I believe is notable and should have an article.

Unfortunately, I do not believe when people say my username is offensive. It is not supposed to me and it was simply they way I thought of myself. I do not wish to change my name, so, I will write an article and put it on this page. If you would like to make it an article for me, I think it would be a good one.

Thanks for all your support. Maybe on day when people realize my username is just that; a username, I will do things myself.

Thank you for all your help. Wikitarded 02:10, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Username

I'm glad to see your back. I'm working at here under the heading "gross misuse of blocking" to get your username unblocked. I would invite you to contribute, but you're still blocked :) I'll keep you posted... 68.143.88.2 14:50, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Comment Usernames

Heyo. I have started a discussion about the appropriateness of your username at WP:RFCN#Wikitarded. Obviously, you are unable to contribute to that discussion since you are still blocked. I have posted another request for your unblock on the Administrators' Noticeboard at WP:ANI#Unblock request. If you are unblocked because of this, please do me a favor and confine your editing, just for the time being, to the discussions about your username and your block. Please do not edit any articles under this username until this mess has been resolved to the satisfaction of the wiki-bureaucracy. If consensus at WP:RFCN shows that most editors find your username offensive (I don't, but clearly some do) that you will consider changing it and contributing user a different one. Cheers, ➪HiDrNick! 17:14, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for clarification

hi, Wikitarded. I am invovled in the discussion about your user name. I was inclined to let you have it after the very public debate on my own user name. Another editor raised a point that I had not considered, which led me to wonder how an editor who had a child suffering from such a name might be inadvertently hurt by your self depreciating humor. I'm certain that it would not be your intent. Do you think that this possible scenario might have any bearing on your decision to keep the name? Feel free to comment anywhere, my talk page, here or in the discussion of your user name. I assure you I want you to have a just resolution of this conflict, and am inclined to view user name choices as personal decisions.Die4Dixie 18:12, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have been reading some of the comments about me and I'm amazed by out in-depth this place is! This is a very complex website with a diverse group of people, all of whom surely contribute to a strong and diverse encyclopedia. Many users have brought up very good points; things I wouldn't have thought of in a million years when I decided on this username. I guess part of the reason I picked this name is because I use a similar name in many aspects of my internet life. I visit a IRC site were my username is Digitaltarded. And I have nickname at work of "balltard". Mostly the office people giving me a hard time because of my profession! (of course out of respect and all good fun).

I certainly do not wish any malice, threats, or disruption on this website. I'm sorry that some of my edits weren't very good. I wasn't trying to vandalize, I will just trying it out and playing around. I should have known better! I also sincerely hope this name doesn't offend anyone; I definitely do not wish that! However, I must say, here are so many things to truly be upset and offended over, I would think most people would have thicker skin than to let a strangers internet nickname cause them grief.

I like this username because it is already comfortable and familiar to me. Also, it's kind of a light hearted, nonchalant way of me admitting my inexperience and slow ability to learn new things, especially with computers. I suppose it's my humble way of reminding myself that the more I learn, the less I know!

To everybody supporting me I want to thank you for being so kind and helpful. Unfortunately I don't want a new username, so if all this is going to be in vein perhaps the best thing to do is just let it be. I don't want any trouble. If my username is accepted and allowed, I will do my best to remain polite at all times, and display true apathy. I have never offended anyone before with my names, they usually just laugh at me. I believe that when a person chooses a nick name, it should be an expression of themselves; distinguished only by the name holders intent. If that intent is to deal harm, malice, or insult to somebody; that intent is not pure and the name should not be allowed. However, if the case is pure and reasonable, in my opinion it should be the choice of who ever picked out the name.

I will still put my article about precision spheres on this page since I can still edit it. If someone would turn it into an article, I will help as much as I can. Although please be warned, the article will probably be long!

I really hope I'm able to edit with this fine group of diverse people. Thanks! 02:07, 6 October 2007 (UTC)02:08, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Wikitarded 02:08, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Sorry it took so long to get back. I had real world things. Good luck.Die4Dixie 05:24, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Username

Just noting that the decision to block this account under WP:U has been upheld at WP:RFCN. Thanks, Deiz talk 05:41, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After reading your essay above, just wanted to point something out - usernames on Wikipedia are not regarded in the same way as a handle on a forum or chatroom. Usernames are not for unrestricted self-expression, they are a means to identify oneself while editing an encyclopedia. It's often an acid test of someone's intentions on Wikipedia - are they serious about editing, or is identifying themself with a quirky name more important? Your intentions in creating this name were no doubt in the best faith, but if others may be offended then... just change it. Deiz talk 06:20, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry :-(

Oh well, the process doesn't work all the time. You've run of of avenues to appeal here. Part of working with so many people on Wikipedia is that not everything will go your way, even if it flies in the face of common sense. I hope you will chose to create a new username, or you can just contribute without logging in if you choose. Honestly though, please don't refuse to change your username as a matter of principle: it won't prove anything to the people who, for one reason or another, think it's wise to dump on our newest editors. They'll just conclude that you were never here to do anything constructive in the first place.

Clearly I'm disappointed about the outcome, but I'll concede to community consensus, and I hope you will consider doing so as well.

Cheers, ➪HiDrNick! 06:59, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nick, those comments are uncalled for. The process may not go in your favour all the time, but it does work - it works, as you concede, by consensus, and Wikipedia has come quite a long way on that principle. Continuing your diatribe to infer there are editors who take some kind of pleasure or satisfaction in "dumping on our newest editors" is really poor. Hopefully now you've realized that WP:RFCN and other procedures for evaluating usernames are not the place to Wikilawyer or try to find "the line". Move on. Deiz talk 07:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all your support Dr. Nick. I've been thinking of usernames I might change to. I wish I could have just kept this one, but you're right, sometimes you don't always get what you want :)

Normally, I would just shut my laptop and go away, probably never coming back here. However, I'm really surprised of all the attention I received and all those that fought for me (although the battle was ultimately unsuccessful). I decided though that it would probably be an injustice to everyone that pushed to allow me to edit.

I'll change my username tomorrow if I'm unblocked. And just for the record, I'm thinking of the name polytetrafluoroethylene (which is the chemical composition of Teflon). I sell a lot of it at work and it would be easy for me to remember. I just wanted to get some advise though because I was reading the policy about a name being too long. Will you let me know if this will work? I can't imagine going through this again!

Also, if I can have an admin unblock me so I can change my name I would appreciated it. And don't worry, I read the rules; I won't edit anything while unblocked, except to change my username. Thanks! Wikitarded 07:42, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As your editing history is short and relatively unexciting, there is no need to change name, just register a new account. Your block has been tweaked to allow you to create a new account, please drop me a talkpage note from the new account to confirm everything is working. Regarding the new name, I would personally advise against "polytetrafluoroethylene". There is a provision against lengthy names, and while this may not be as controversial as your former name, it will likely lead some to believe (I'll be honest, myself included) that your main priority still isn't building the encyclopedia, it's pushing the rules and causing a stir with a funky username. Deiz talk 07:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For crying out loud, we have an administrator with the username Dihydrogen Monoxide (talk · contribs). You could set your signature to sign with "PTFE" and link to your long-form username, and set up a redirect from User:PTFE to User:Polytetrafluoroethylene. No worries. ➪HiDrNick! 08:12, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It would actually be better to set it up the other way round - it's the username, rather than the signature, which should be easy to remember, spell, search for etc. PTFE (talk · contribs) is all yours... BTW, the line "I am not an administrator" on the user page of the editor you mentioned would tend to suggest he's not one. Deiz talk 08:24, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
D'oh! You're right, of course. He had an RfA a week or two ago, and failed for reasons having nothing to do with his username, I assure you.  ;-) ➪HiDrNick! 08:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have a new name! This name will work fine, and I don't get in any trouble for having a name too long. Hopefully, I won't get in trouble for having a name too short either!

I would like my signature to say polytetrafluoroethylene like you were talking about in the upper paragraphs. Is that difficult? I was filtering through the settings and it seemed like all thats required is some simple HTML.

I'm going to leave a message on your talk pages, then it's to work on this article! I need to read some more about how to create an article properly (I found the manual of style). Anyways, I'm excited to actually make my own article! Regards, PTFE 17:02, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
