Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Northrup (disambiguation) has been reverted.
Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. I removed the following link(s): http://northrup.tripod.com/surname.html (matching the regex rule (?<!jeff560\.)tripod\.com).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 09:18, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Out of curiosity, what are you merging from? You obviously have some knowledge of Wikipedia, it's not as if "disambiguation" is a common concept. I appreciate any new disambiguation pages, but I also like to keep the WP:MOSDAB conventions in force because they're very helpful to readers. I'd like to help you with this, so let me know a bit more about what you're trying to accomplish. Shadowjams (talk) 09:24, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shadowjams, as recommended on the talk page here Talk:Northrop, I was attempting to create the DAB page for Northrup. I am new to editing, but not new as a user of Wikipedia. As BilCat suggested, I was manually merging some of the search results for Northrup in to create content for the new DAB page. If you have any sage wisdom on formatting, conventions etc., I'm all ears. In particular, do you know of a way to merge all instances of articles with the word "northrup" in their titles into a DAB page, or is this just always done manually (as I have started). Cheers. No problem. Sorry if I was perhaps too assuming. Your disambiguation page looks really good. I was a little surprised when I saw a lot of new entries coming in, but now that you've explained where that comes from it makes perfect sense. Sorry if I gave you any anxiety. Thanks for your help, and I hope you stick around. Looks like a great contribution. Shadowjams (talk) 09:47, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And to give you maybe a little bit more of a detailed answer to your specific question, I know the general disambiguation style guide, but I think there's a lot of "in practice" versus "in policy" issues in the disambiguation page area. In my opinion, which might change and which might also be wrong, I think that if the initial phrase is a valid link, and is either phonetically, or grammatically close to the target, then there's not a problem with having that lead. You might run into people that disagree, but if they do they shouldn't give you too much go a hard time on that point. If they do, tell them I told you to do it and I'll have that argument with them. Anyway, glad to see you here. Thanks for being so conscientious. See you around. Shadowjams (talk) 09:52, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Thanks for the help. Glad to be onboard.
