Interest in C-SPAN project

Hello there! I saw your post on WP:RB but I wasn't totally clear on how to go about it. I did do Edward Kennedy because it seemed to be straightforward, but for instance George H. W. Bush already has another CSPAN link and I wasn't sure to remove it or what. I should have mentioned this in the offer, so I've now updated the explanatory statement accordingly: the Notes column on the project page was meant to address this, but certainly it will help to be as clear as possible. I'm totally willing, and wanting, to go nominate it right now. It's well-written, fulfills all of the DYK requirements, and I just see real reason why it shouldn't be nominated. Thanks on both counts! As to DYK: I got a bit ahead of myself, and I'd love to but I think GPG doesn't want to be too promotional; they're just happy the page exists for anyone who looks them up. Not saying you shouldn't on my account, but I'll sideline myself if you go ahead. I've started up a new peer review here for Cracker Barrel. I apologize profusely for taking so long to do this. I've been really busy and I admit that it slipped my mind. As i've said there, I think we should wait to see what kind of responses we get first before making any sort of userspace draft again. If it's simple stuff, then I can handle it. Hey, that's very cool, and your plan sounds good to me.. I'll keep a watch on it this weekend and ahead, and I'll offer any insight I can. Meanwhile, I just happened to run across your trouble with MSK this past week. I didn't read it all, but it looks like you made it through OK. Looked like no fun at all, and gave me flashbacks to my own drama last month. All I can say is, keep up the good work.
Anyway, I've been busy off-site a lot recently, but plan to be more active again next week. As an aside, I'm a little perplexed by Hobbes' response to the Brian Lamb article and then non-response for several days. Oh yes, I'm well aware of his interest in me. In my Talk archives, you can find a hysterical rant from him about some of my recent work (following a lengthy and unpleasant discussion, my contributions were upheld, and then some). I don't like it, but I don't know what to do except keep my distance and keep contributing in a manner that reflects well on me. And, yeah, you're only 2 hours away from me, that's kinda weird. Also, i've made a userified version of the article, since i'm pretty sure it's going to be deleted, but i'm also pretty sure that there will be more news coverage in the future. Hi again, WWB. I looked over relevant policies I found. From what I can tell, and I am not an expert, a list could be appropriate in this case. Here are some policy sections that seem to apply here:

WP:Manual of Style/Stand-alone lists

Being articles, stand-alone lists are subject to Wikipedia's content policies, such as verifiability, no original research, neutral point of view, and what Wikipedia is not, as well as notability guidelines. Selection criteria See also: Notability for lists of people

Selection criteria should be unambiguous, objective, and supported by reliable sources. In cases where the membership criteria are subjective or likely to be disputed (for example, lists of unusual things or terrorist incidents), membership criteria should be based on reliable sources.

Lists of people A person may be included in a list of people if all the following requirements are met: ▪ The person meets the Wikipedia notability requirement. An exception to this requirement may be made if the person is famous for a specific event, the notability requirement need not be met. If a person in a list does not have an article in Wikipedia about them, a citation (or link to another article) must be provided to establish their membership in the list's group and to establish their notability on either BLP1E or BIO1E. ▪ The person's membership in the list's group is established by reliable sources.

People can and do receive awards and/or honors throughout their lives. In general (though there are a few exceptions to this), recipients of an award should be grouped in a list rather than a category.

Hi there, Coaster. Thanks very much for doing that research. It covered some of the same ground as I had read, and I agree about the applicable policies. In my draft versions, I've included the list of awardees presented by the Academy on their website, and arranged them according to field, as the Academy itself does somewhat informally. I've tried this in two ways, as follows:
Regarding notability and verifiability, the Golden Plate award has been covered in-depth by The Washington Post and by 60 Minutes (as cited in my drafts) as well as other sources I didn't include, mostly writing about individual winners. And thanks to the early report I found in the former Milwaukee Sentinel, that's newspaper coverage spanning 50 years. The full list itself is verifiable to the Academy's website, similar to how the Nobels and Oscars are typically verified by the awarding body's website. This also seems to follow the Citing sources section of WP:STANDALONE. Meanwhile, all of the invidviduals listed are themselves notable, and clearly are the subject of Wikipedia entries. I'm impressed that you dug deep on issues like BLP1E, though they don't seem to be in play here.
As their names imply, the first is organized by category and the year they won. The second divides them further, by decade. I think either could work perfectly well, but if you have a different idea, I'd be open to trying it another way, too.

I agree the term "sold" could have created confusion so I substituted "provided" for "sold" as suggested. Regarding the sentence about Catherine Reynolds Foundation donating $100 million, this seems to be off topic to me. It does not seem to be needed to keep the article clear and informative. Hi Coaster, I wouldn't use MS Word: as you guess, that may auto-format some characters, which would cause problems. Feel free to edit the draft in my userspace, I don't mind. Other options: paste it into the "edit" field where you'll create the article, and just hit "Preview" to make sure it looks right before you hit "Publish"; or you could use a free plain text editor such as Notepad++ for Windows and TextWrangler for Mac. Hi there Coaster, the List of Golden Plate awardees article looks terrific. One thing that happened after you posted it, however: an editor came along and put an "orphan" tag on it. True enough, no articles presently link to it. Would you mind adding a link in the Golden Plate awardees section of the Academy article, perhaps as a hatnote? According to WP:ORPH this should be enough to remove the template. Oh, and mea culpa: I guess I figured you were watching my page, so I didn't bother adding a Talkback message. I'll do that now. Adding the hatnote is fairly simple: you'll need to use one of the templates from Template:Hatnote and add it below the Golden Plate awardees section heading in the Academy article. I'd recommend using {{Main|Main Article}}. Replace the text on the right of the pipe with the name of the article you want to link to, here it would be List of Golden Plate awardees, like so: {{Main|List of Golden Plate awardees}} The text that appears is:
Main article: List of Golden Plate awardees

So it looks like the Cracker Barrel peer review was closed without any further people commenting. Oh well. I guess we can just take that as something of an affirmation that we've got most of the info covered already (though FAC reviewers are still sure to surprise us, I bet on it). I'm a little busy tonight and tomorrow, but I was thinking about maybe starting the FAC Wednesday evening or sometime during Thursday, if you're up for it. On a related note, i'm of the opinion that, so long as you're implementing things FAC reviewers point out need to be changed, it should be okay if you're involved in actively editing the article in that instance. Agreed, that's a good question: in my initial investigations, I haven't found anything regarding length one way or the other. Neither is this the complete list, but from my discussions with the Academy, this is the preferred version of their selected list. I'd be happy to look into it further. Also: if determined that the length is OK, I'd obviously be happy to prepare it, so it would be pretty simple for you (or someone else) to make the changeover. Looking for an editor

Hey WWBToo. I met a lawyer at Wikimania who said he was involved in reviewing your C-SPAN article. He said he did some work on it where he felt there were errors, and was asked to make the edits on your behalf, but declined to do so. Hi David, I think you must mean Racepacket. That sounds like my interaction with him on that Talk page, and I know he's based in Northern Virginia. Why is OrangeMike so rude?

I don't like OrangeMike. He makes me grovel. And cry. And he ignores my repeated requests, and then declines my requests to remove the evidence of my public grovelling. It is humiliating. That is why I don't like him.

I wish Wikipedia had more nice friendly people. There ARE nice friendly good people on Wikipedia e.g. all the chemical engineers are bright and wonderful. But none of the good or helpful people seem to get barn stars and all the lame stupid articles are praised and some of those type of contributors have retinues of sycophants. I don't understand.

I'm sorry, you don't know me. I was trying to clean up the grossly inadequate and short Vanguard Group article, noticed a sensible edit by SusanLensch or someone like that on the talk page, then looked at her talk page, and saw that she had tons of thanks and barn stars and groveling sycophantish stuff. I thought, okay, maybe she's awesome, then I noticed that someone you knew of, TagShimon or Tag Simon, I forgot his exact user name (I'm sorry), he pointed out how she edited something and broke all sorts of links because of shoddy sloppy disambiguation and page moves, and then just told him to clean up the mess she left, which seemed very rude. He was not happy, and he got chastised for that, and that was how I ended up on his talk page. That was where I saw your comment, thanking him for his help with an article in Dec 2011, about which the odious OrangeMike took an adversarial attitude. So here I am! Don't be irritated with me. Hello, I am the author of the last two edits, both reverted, on the Short (finance) page. I am also the author of most of the French version. Actually, I had written both versions at the same time. I am sad to see that, even though the talk pages of the article are full of people lamenting about how this article is ill-structured and ill-balanced, any attempt, not only by myself, to improve it inexorably fails. I read your comment on Specifico’s talk page : “long, thinly sourced, arguably unencyclopedic discussion of the pros and cons of restricting short-selling. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is also heavily weighted toward the EU and France in particular”. Well, thanks for the compliment! Hi there, Bruno. The revert was certainly not meant personally, however, there were a few causes for concern. First, edits from an IP address are often viewed skeptically, fairly or not. More importantly, such a dramatic change to the article's text, particularly one that removes established material and replaces it with all-new sections, without any discussion on the Talk page, is bound to be met with scrutiny. Based on what I could see, and others as well, it was not clearly an improvement, and had some immediately obvious problems. As SPECIFICO noted in his edit summary, better to break it down into reviewable chunks and raise these ideas on the Talk page. I always thought it was from an orchestra conductor or theatre director saying to the orchestra or cast, "OK let's do that one more time, with feeling". The guy I first heard using it was expressing frustration at having to repeat himself for the umpteenth time when negotiating an issue in a contract. Billy Eckstein did a record with that title in 1960. The 1960 film was based on Once More, with Feeling!, the 1958 play by Harry Kurnitz, set in the world of concert music. The play was highly successful on Broadway, and I'm betting that it was what brought the phrase into common speech. Hey, I just replied over there, as you may have seen. I follow some of your points, although even where I agree, I still think my updates will improve the article—though it of course will not make the article greatly shorter, or make it more accessible to, say, high schoolers. My primary goal, as described there, is to update and correct small issues, add citations to verify the current section, and overall make it a more reliable and solid overview of the topic. I'm open to joining a discussion about the long-term future of the article, however in the short term, I'd like to work through the material I've prepared and make improvements as we can. Hi there Chimino, very interesting to see this up for TFA. I think you may be aware that my contributions to the article (research, writing, community discussion) were undertaken as a paid consultant. My contract with Cracker Barrel has long since expired, so my response here is not as a company representative, but merely reflecting my own vested interest in the article and subject. All that understood, two concerns:
  1. The article was subject to extreme disagreement (now archived) about the company's discriminatory practices in the 1990s and subsequent legal and public relations difficulties. It reached FA only after a very tenuous process involving careful negotiation and significant compromise, so I fear that the TFA process might not reveal this FA as less stable than it may appear now.
  2. Related: the teaser in the current nomination is taken from the first and third paragraphs of the article's introduction. I am concerned that omitting the second paragraph not only makes the teaser unduly focused on past controversies, it also overlooks the "old-fashioned general store" atmosphere that made Cracker Barrel notable in the first place. I would personally like to see the teaser be the first and second paragraphs, but perhaps another compromise is for the teaser to borrow in equal part from the second and third paragraphs.
In any case, assuming the issues above can be addressed, I would be interested in seeing the article make TFA. Let me know what you think, and I'd be willing to adapt this as a comment at TFAR if you like. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 20:23, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
