braille pattern nav template

I added a simple nav template here. What do you think about adding it to all the patterns? Could also be spruced up, but it's functional. — kwami (talk) 13:34, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

I realized about 3/4 of the way through adding this to all the pattern articles that you might want to do it yourself, but oh well. But to belabor the point, yes, this looks good to me. I've got a couple ideas on how to spruce this up a little, so we'll see if we can't work out something that looks a bit better. Not that the braille pattern articles fall very far from the "utilitarian" end of the presentation spectrum in the first place. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 16:03, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
No, that's fine. Those articles are your babies, so add away, and modify as you like. (One thing, though: the 8-dot charts are in Unicode order, while this one is in Braille's original order. Personally, I think that's more appropriate, since these articles are not specifically about Unicode, and many of our braille-alphabet articles are arranged by Braille order, while none are by Unicode order. If we add a 'link' option to the braille-cell template, so we can easily have the braille-alphabet articles link to the letter articles, I think the Braille order would be further justified.)
I tried fixing the width to approximate the width of the braille-character notice just below, but that might not work when the visually impaired have set their fonts to large.
BTW, while trying to verify Unesco's account of Mongolian Braille, I came across tantalizing bits of Inner Mongolian Braille. Assuming the braille sample I found is accurate, it's a very odd system, where a braille letter can have unrelated readings depending on where it's found in a word. I'm trying to confirm, or to at least get more texts, but this might be hopelessly obscure. — kwami (talk) 16:20, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
I completely agree. The Unicode order only makes sense in a computer context, and is not appropriate for any of the general braille articles, least of all the navigation template. As for the Mongolian Braille, I'm glad you're having success tracking some of these guys down. I wouldn't be too dismayed about the different readings - having spent a goodly number of hours in Unicode meetings, I can tell you that nearly everything having to do with the Mongolian/Tibetan/PhagsPa script family makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever. I would be dismayed if the Braille representation of the associated languages were any more coherent. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 16:32, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

So, how different do you think Unicode would be, if we were to start it from scratch knowing what we now know? Do you think Chinese and hangul would fit in plane 1? Would we even need additional planes? — kwami (talk) 23:35, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

There would probably be no precomposed letter+diacritics or letter + format in Latin, Greek, or Cyrillic, no letter + nukta in Indic scripts, no precomposed Hangul syllables, amd no Arabic presentation forms. Chinese characters were always going to be an ungodly mess, and there is no way of decomposing them without seriously bloating the memory requirements for east asian text data, although I would have eliminated the compatibility forms. All in all, the biggest efficiency would not have come from eliminating the need for the SIP, it would have come from having enough room to bring most of the SMP scripts into the BMP. Citation error introduced in 64 articles

Hi there. Your recent edits to Braille articles (e.g. Braille pattern dots-0) introduced citation errors. It looks like there are 64 articles with the same error. When you cite a publication, you should use |page= to cite a single page, or |pages= to cite a range of pages. Using both parameters causes an error (scroll to the bottom of the article to see it). Neither parameter is supposed to show how many total pages are in a cited work.

See Template:Cite_book#In-source_locations for a longer explanation. Can you please fix your edits? It looks like removing |pages= would be the right choice, unless you were trying to indicate that the referenced material appears on pages 88–226. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:08, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Oops. For some reason, the "pages" parameter only seemed to make sense as the length of the work. Obviously, I was wrong. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 14:19, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

More citation errors in Braille articles

When you include the |url= parameter in a citation, the URL needs to start with http://

Starting the URL with "www" results in an error, along with a web address that is not clickable. Can you please fix the articles you have recently changed? You can see a list of them in Category:Pages with URL errors. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:06, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Speedy deletion refers to the process, not the timeframe

Re: This edit: Several of the file-related WP:SPEEDY criteria are 7-day criteria. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:59, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

There's a reason why those are all F criteria, though. When the problem with an image is that it has incomplete licensing information, you want to provide a short time period to get those issues resolved. There is no remotely similar corollary to that purpose in user space content not germane to the purpose of wikipedia that would justify a similar contingency. It's just a sop to airbrush over the fact that the proposed criteria isn't very #1 objective, or #2 uncontestable. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 02:25, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 4

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Rufus, Oregon, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bandits (film) (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
