I wonder whether Guin's comments on Harry Potter Universe—good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited—belong at J. K. (talk page stalker) Oh, I love that comment! Especially the "mean-spirited" part. I really like it. But it seems doubtful that it belongs in the J. K. Rowling article. It seems a bit coatrack-y, as it's only a more or less throwaway comment in an interview, in response to a specific question, not an in-depth analysis by Le Guin, or even a spontaneous comment by her. Moreover, TrangaBellam, your quote from the article (in green) is incomplete, inasmuch as Le Guin isn't singled out; she's merely mentioned as one of a whole list of influences: Scholars agree that Harry Potter is heavily influenced by the children's fantasy of writers such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Elizabeth Goudge, Ursula K. Le Guin, Dianna Wynne Jones, and E. Nesbit. Admittedly Le Guin is the only one on the list that's still living, so the others can't be asked what they think of Harry Potter, but nevertheless. Bishonen | tålk 11:59, 21 February 2022 (UTC).
Regretfully, Bish, Le Guin isn't among the living either, she died in 2018...TB, I'm not sure, and I agree with all else that Bish writes. As with any of her interviews, there's gems strewn throughout, but it's still an interview, and there's reams of scholarly material. I think it's this very interview that's the source for her "stylistically ordinary" comment currently sourced to a book, but if that's the piece of the quote the source chose to reuse, that's what it is...I wonder if other academics reproduce it in full; they might have done, if it illustrated the point they were looking to make. This confused me for a little while but this discretionary sanctions message was posted on my talk page while signed on your behalf by another editor. I'm not sure if it was intentional or accidental, but it is certainly misleading and confusing, and, I imagine, not really appropriate. I thought you should know. Vanamonde, I got a purely administrative and rather trivial question: since the arbitration should users be notified of discretionary sanctions instead? @Vice regent: Essentially, nothing changes from an awareness perspective; see 1.iii. Any notices that expired, and that have not been rendered redundant by participation in enforcement proceedings, will need to be renewed; alerts that expire will need to be renewed; new users or previously unaware users will need to be notified; but a user with a notification within the twelve months before the ARBCOM ruling was considered aware of DS at that point. I demand you to cease your baseless slander against me. The edit ban was clearly in violation of my freedom of speech and rights on this platform. Regardless of what you think of Vikram Sampath's page, you cannot simply ignore your TBAN (as you have done here once again). As such I'm not going to discuss that page with you. You sound a authoritarian neo-nazi. I know I shouldn't engage in such slanderous attacks but you are deliberately silencing me and that is wrong. I'm willing to work with you to positively contribute to editing but I have the right to express my opinion. I have seen all sorts of slanderous attacks on people who edit pages related to south asia, with phrases like "hindu right wing", "sanghi" and "Hindu supremacist" used. It's clear that there is a double standard here. If you really cared about the truth and doing what is morally right, you would try to help me rather than slander and silence me. I have no hatred towards any entity but I will not deny that I certainly have a tilt to pro-india and pro-hindu views. I'm allowed to have these views if I used sources to back up my claims. WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Frustration with edit conflicts

Hello, I noticed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mike Tinney you mentioned that your closing was " frustratingly erased by an edit-conflict". I have had that frustration and found a couple of solutions. 1)- copy the content before posting. If there is some issue the content can simply be pasted in a new edit, 2)- scroll to the bottom of the content (your edit) and copy it from there. Request for opinion/intervention in the article on Bengali Kayastha

Hi Vanamonde, hope you are doing fine. Sorry to bother you again, but this time we badly need your opinion/intervention in order to protect the article from two POV pushers refusing to accept consensus! This is regarding a particular source by Prof. Razia Akter Banu used in the article on Bengali Kayastha. The source has earlier been accepted by Sitush in a closely related article, you may check the difference (4 consecutive edits by Sitush after mine, here) long time back (this article didn't exist at that time and Kulin Kayastha article represented the Bengali Kayastha); the content has been there in the original article after being accepted by Sitush, and later, part of it was incorporated in this closely related article. Trangabellam had recently raised an objection, which has been sorted out as well. You may have a look at their recent statements towards consensus here where they clearly mention that out of two consecutive statements, the second one belongs to our article. Right after my latest edits, I dropped a message on talk page pinging both the trusted editors (on caste & ethnic groups) TrangaBellam & LukeEmily and the latter agreed to wait for TB, please check here. In fact, LukeEmily had in principle agreed as evident from the above conversation. In spite of all these, two comparatively new editors (Bengali editors whom I have fought with in order to prevent POV pushing, one on Baidya, the other editor on Mahishya) are constantly engaging in edit warring/disruptive edits! Since they are not only comparatively new, but Bengali editors, & may apparently have bias/COI, I have requested them to stop disruptive edits/edit warring and let neutral experienced editors like TrangaBellam & LukeEmily drive the consensus (in spite of having a prior consensus with Sitush); please see here, I even mentioned that, as a Bengali, I am taking a backseat and facilitating 2 other experienced editors (TB & LukeEmily) arrive at a consensus. But the problem is, TB or LukeEmily are no longer actively involved in the discussions after the last apparent consensus (recent though, diff provided above). Please have a look at the recent edit warring/disruptive edits along with misleading edit summaries in spite of me having consensus. These two comparatively new Bengali editors, Satnam2408 & Chanchaldm tried their best to convince TrangaBellam & LukeEmily (as evident from their repeated talk page messages), and when they failed, they are engaging in edit warring, clearly defying the existing consensus. I would request you to have a look at the content, it's sheer piece of history, nothing contentious at all, that too attributed to the author. Prof. Banu (as a source) and the cited part has earlier been accepted by Sitush, as mentioned earlier. Would also request you to kindly drop your opinion regarding the content. Thanks & Regards. Well, anything added by Wifione is somewhat suspect, but I don't really see a problem with it; it advises against using reviews as sources for the material covered in the book, but that obviously refers to that material when discussed independent of the book itself. Getting data from deleted article 'List of games with ray tracing support' so it can be used to help build page on pcgamingwiki

Im not disagreeing with deletion, I just want to see the old article so I can use it to help build a similar page on pcgamingwiki, https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_games_that_support_ray_tracing, Im fairly new to wikipedia so I do not know the ins and outs, is this possible ? @Psychosikh: That's an unusual request, but I don't have a problem with it, so here you go. Please remember that you should not recreate this on Wikipedia; once you have copied the data you want, tag the page for WP:CSD#U1, and an admin will delete it again. @John Maynard Friedman: Thanks for flagging this, but it doesn't worry me very much. We typically redact material that's suppressible; see WP:OS for the suppression criteria. A PhD candidate, as this person describes themselves as, is going to be an adult, and as such their name and employment isn't usually suppressible. Vanamonde (Talk) 18:47, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

@Abecedare: There isn't one in twinkle, but there's an equivalent script you can install; see User:Bellezzasolo/Scripts/arb. Simplified my life a lot when I found it. One note though; you usually have to click through twice; the first time triggers an edit filter and fails, the second time overrides it. The script works for issuing DS sanction notifications too. The only catch being that (unless I missed something) the sanctions still need to be logged manually even though the script's form has place to enter the 'Action (for WP:AEL)'. Abecedare (talk) 21:57, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

But I know the Am Pol and IPA alerts by heart, and have a note pointing to the sanction template,[4] which is all I really need, so I'll continue to just type those in like I was a cavewoman. WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

  • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)
  • When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)

Guild of Copy Editors April 2022 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the April newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2021.

Election results: Jonesey95 retired as lead coordinator. Reidgreg was approved to fill this role after an 18-month absence from the coordinator team, and Baffle gab1978 was chosen as an assistant coordinator following a one-year break. Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Tenryuu continued on as long-standing assistant coordinators.

January Drive: Of the 22 editors who signed up, 16 editors claimed 146 copy edits including 45 requests. (details)

February Blitz: This one-week effort focused on requests and a theme of Africa and African diaspora history. Of the 12 editors who signed up, 6 editors recorded 21 copy edits, including 4 requests. (details)

March Drive: Of the 28 editors who signed up, 18 claimed 116 copy edits including 25 requests. (details)

April Blitz: This one-week copy editing event has been scheduled for 17–23 April, sign up now!

Progress report: As of 11 April, copy editors have removed approximately 500 articles from the backlog and completed 127 copy-editing requests during 2022. The backlog has been hovering at about 1,100 tagged articles for the past six months.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

@Amaekuma: Hi there. I'm afraid I'm far too busy for Wikipedia at this moment; also, individual Wikipedians do not offer courses of the sort you want. If you're interested in spending more time on Wikipedia, my first suggestion would be to continue with the content work you have already begun: this page is one you might find useful. If you are still keen on anti-vandalism work, take a look at WP:CVA, but please remember that any work you do should be worthwhile in and of itself, not just as a means of getting rollback or other advanced permission. @Barkeep49: Apologies: as RP said, I've been travelling, with infrequent internet and little time. I sanctioned Ypatch essentially for displaying a battleground attitude. Before granting an appeal I would want to see evidence that going forward they will be able to engage constructively with users they disagree with within this contentious area. I haven't the time to evaluate whether that's the case, and am happy to leave that to ARBCOM's discretion.
