THE DISAPPEARANCE OF SOFIA MCKENNA

SOFIA MCKENNA & SPENCER MUGFORD

Sofia McKenna and Spencer Mugford we're friends who at one time worked together at the Red Door Spa. Sofia and Spencer hung around together many times. It was also reported that Sofia had a Boyfriend named Austin Parrow Cordova, who claimed he gave Sofia permission to go out with Spencer on May 27th 2018 .( Interesting to say the least.) Spencer and Sofia decided that they were going to take a late night trip out to Ledge light Lighthouse off the coast of Groton CT. The Lighthouse was said to be haunted. So this may have encouraged their decision to take this adventure. Many are still trying to piece together the events of the day prior to this young twosome leaving the Connecticut shore. At 2 a.m. there was a video, and a snapshot uploaded to social media. The video was of Sofia and Spencer out on the Ocean. Sofia's voice, and Spencer's back. Spencer was paddling. It's clear it wasn't easy. Sofia was speaking, describing being "Out on the F*@#ing Ocean.!" There was an excitement in her voice. She made fun of Spencer a bit jokingly. ..It is almost certain the video was of the trip out to the lighthouse. There were two snapshots that came from the video. One of the back of Spencer while he paddled and one of a row of lights in the dark. The photo that was uploaded was a picture of Sofia at the lighthouse. She was happy, She had her tongue out with a big smile. From the picture it appears she is standing on the stairs that go from a two foot wide lower ledge to the much wider upper platform, right in front of a no trespassing signs. .. They made it out to the lighthouse. But What Happened to them from that moment on? That's where the mystery begins .

THE HORROR

The horror of the unknown started in the next few minutes. At 2:05AM just 5 minutes from when the video and photos were uploaded to snapchat, excessive phone calls began. Seven of them. 2:05am 2:06am 2:07am 2:08am 2:08am 2:08am and 2:09am Michelle Mckenna's phone would go off Seven times.None left Voicemail. She stated that she was sleeping and missed them. She would soon learn that the incoming calls were from Spencer's phone. But Spencer didn't know her number. It had to be Sofia trying to reach her, but why? Seven missed calls that would end up being the biggest mystery. Who was calling repeatedly and why? If Sofia drowned then what happened before she drowned? And why did she not call the police or her alleged boyfriend Austin? Later on that day Michelle received another call , this time from Sofia's alleged boyfriend Austin Parrow Cordova. According to statements he said he called because he was worried about Sofia's whereabouts. The Police were then contacted. Sofia was reported missing. Spencer's family was also concerned. Spencer had not shown up to go to a very important event that they knew he wouldn't miss. They also notified the police that Spencer was Missing. The Coast Guard then set out to search for the young adventurers.. The coast guard was called in to search so someone must have either known what the plans of Mckenna and Mugford were or located the Snapchat fairly quickly and knew to report them.

THE SEARCH

The search went on for approximately 23 hours but in addition they were also Searching for two other missing boaters . The following day, there was a small 14' sunfish sailboat found upside down on Truman beach NY. Police believed it was the boat used by Sofia and Spencer. This has never been confirmed 100% accurate, because they reported the couple were on a paddle board. They claimed that the broken paddle was inside the upside down boat. Broken low almost near the paddle itself. It was described to have growth in the hull, and partially buried in the dirt and rock, with a light layer of dust and dirt, (all that in less than 24 hours?) Another mystery. Pictures taken of the boat as evidence say unidentified fingerprints were seen bit no fingerprints taken to be analyzed.

DISCOVERY OF SPENCER'S BODY

On June 8, 2018. 11 days after the disappearance, the body of Spencer Mugford was found by a "Good Samaritan" floating nearly 2 and a half miles from ledge light in the opposite direction from where the boat was found. The boat went one way and Spencer went another way. Although Spencer was now found they did not resume the search for Sofia. The other two missing boaters were also recovered. All but Sofia was found within two weeks of their disappearance date. The case went from the Coast guard to the Groton Police department. There it sat virtually untouched. In the eyes of the law Sofia was not missing but already dead. Although there was no body and no indication that she drowned. It was their assumption. Why so quick to assume?

POSSIBILITIES On July 13, 2018 there was a tourist group that went out to the lighthouse and took some photos. Nothing seemed out of place and it was unbeknownst to them what took place a little over two weeks prior. Photos were uploaded on the Ledge light Lighthouse Facebook page. These photos would not be seen till August 2018. Amongst the photos there rolled up in a ball in the window cross panes was what looked like a grey sweatshirt type cloth. That was the identical color of what Sofia wore that night. Could it have been? Sure, but we will never know because too much time passed. If the search for Sofia included a search of the actual lighthouse grounds and the lighthouse maybe this would be answered.

COMMUNITY GETS INVOLVES THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA On July 22, 2018 Finding Sofia McKenna (What Happened to Sofia?) Facebook group created by Valerie Mayze was formed to find answers to these questions and more. Why did the search end so quickly when other searches go on for many days? What makes Sofia and Spencer less important than others. Like the fireman in Florida who went missing on the Ocean. Coast Guard continued that search for a week or more . If Sofia was missing on land would it be different? How are they so sure that she didn't make it back to shore? If she fell into the water right after calling , the phone would have been in her hands it would have sank, if they did a search with underwater radar then why did they not find the phone? Why have they not checked all phone records of Spencer knowing that was the last phone used by Sofia and Spencer. All phone records are important. Many questions have been added to all of the mystery of that day. Some of the actual disappearance and some of the way the search was conducted. Some of the relationships between Sofia and Spencer between Sofia and Austin which had known physical abuse throughout the years. Austin was under a restraining order at the time for his violence. Many are not convinced that this was a clear cut case of drowning. It may be, but the answers won't be found if questions are not sought.

Shedding Light on the Case

The group formed to fight to find answers. Continues to fight. The summer of 2018, nearly three months after Sofia's disappearance the group Moderator, Carol Fort, cousin of Sofia after weeks of trying finally achieved getting Sofia listed on NaMus the National Association of Missing and unidentified Systems . This was huge because until this moment Sofia was unknown. She was now considered missing . This should not have taken so long. Michelle had reported her daughter missing on the very day they started searching. Why was no information found prior?

New Detectives

The case moved on to Montville State Police after 72 days .. this is automatic. Since the transfer it has also switched hands of detectives. Currently it is in the hands of Detective Randy Silvestri. Who has kept this case active.

Spreading Sofia's Story

From the start of the group, a succession of reports were sent to the media. Sofia's case began to take life. Her story was Spreading. Flyers were printed and spread amongst the members, hung in stores and Businesses. Hung down on the docks and throughout first CT towns and then spread to places as far north as Maine and as far south as Florida ..Members were all over from sea to shining sea and even across the pond to U.K . Sofia's Army grew. They have dispersed not only hundreds of flyers but created a way to continue spreading her story with bumper Stickers and bracelets. People want to know what happened to Sofia. Searches were conducted on the Shore, and local fishermen would keep eyes open out on the water. People that now knew Sofia's story would now look along the shore and when they would visit the CT shore they would think of Sofia when they saw the lighthouse which is just a mile off the coast.. A reminder that there is hope that Sofia might one day be found. The group wants people to know that Sofia was here. She is a human being. And in the early morning hours of May 27, 2018, Something happened to change the lives of those that knew her and also those that didn't. Nothing of Sofia was ever found. And no one should give up until something is proven. . A human being should never be left behind and forgotten. We don't intend to.
