WikiCup 2013 June newsletter

We are down to our final 16: the 2013 semi-finals are upon us. A score of 321 was required to survive round 3, further cementing this as the most competitive WikiCup yet; round 3 was survived in 2012 with 243 points, in 2011 with 76 points and in 2010 with 250 points. The change may in part be to do with the fact that more articles are now awarded bonus points, in addition to more competitive play. Reaching the final has, in the past, required 573 points (2012, a 135% increase on the score needed to reach round 4), 150 points (2011, a 97% increase) and 417 points (2010, a 72% increase). This round has seen over a third of participants claiming points for featured articles (with seven users claiming for multiple featured articles) and most users have also gained bonus points. However, the majority of points continue to come from good articles, followed by did you know articles. In this round, every content type was utilised by at least one user, proving that the WikiCup brings together content contributors from all corners of the project.

Round 3 saw a number of contributions of note. Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions) claimed the first featured topic points in this year's competition for her excellent work on topics related to Maya Angelou, the noted American author and poet. We have also continued to see high-importance articles improved as part of the competition: Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions) was awarded a thoroughly well-earned 560 points for her featured article Middle Ages and 102 points for her good article Battle of Hastings. Good articles James Chadwick and Stanislaw Ulam netted Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) 102 and 72 points respectively, while 72 points were awarded to Poland Piotrus (submissions) for each of Władysław Sikorski and Emilia Plater, both recently promoted to good article status. Collaborative efforts between WikiCup participants have continued, with, for example, New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and Canada Sasata (submissions) being awarded 180 points each for their featured article on Boletus luridus.

A rules reminder: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on the 29/30 June, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. We are currently seeing concern about the amount of time people have to wait for reviews, especially at GAC- if you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New template proposal

Hi Torchiest, I've been experimenting with a new template to complement (and is based upon) {{GODEtb}} that will inform copy-edit requesters that their request is being dealt with. This is something I do already and I've been thinking of doing this for a while to automate the task and allow others to easily inform requesters. It's at User:Baffle gab1978/Sandbox; I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on whether it could be useful and whether I should move in to template space at 'GOCEcestart' (or elsewhere). Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 20:07, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) You could avoid the {{{user}}} parameter by using the {{BASEPAGENAME}} magic word. For example, on this page it generates "Torchiest" (without the quotes). Also, would it be a good idea to omit the "Cheers" and allow the invoker to use their preferred signoff? Um ... Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 21:44, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
Of course; this is only a test version. I'm not too knowledgeable about template syntax so thanks for the suggestions, Simon; I'll have a play later. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk)
I like it. For people who do requests on a regular basis, it would be a nice way to leave notes more easily and consistently. It does make sense to have templates for both ends of the request event. I say go ahead and move it into the project space here above {{GOCEtb}}. Chee Thanks. —Torchiest talkedits 11:51, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Torchiest; I've moved the template into template space at GOCEstartce, and added it as you suggested above. Feel free to correct any mistakes or omissions; I hope it's useful. I'm glad you're feeling better now, welcome back. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:33, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
I think you mean into template space at Template:GOCEstartce :) Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 10:11, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Torchiest,

At Bangladesh Police, what do you make the work count, as the prose size counter doesn't work on bullet points? Thanks, Matty.007 19:44, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Whew, that's a bit messy. I don't count basic lists, like the police ranks for example, in my word counts, since there's nothing to be done with them, but the other bullet points definitely count. After fiddling with it a bit, I came up with 4080 words. —Torchiest talkedits 11:42, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Assistance

Hi Torchiest

Apologies for my absence. Though reluctant to put myself as on a break, or as semi retired, I have arthritis in my spine and at present I am not really able to sit at the PC for any real length of time. I get on as much as I can, but have had to spread myself thinly, causing me to drop the Robotics project and all my copy-editing for a while. Things are looking up, but as everything else falls behind, Wiki has suffered most. I was on some heavy-duty painkillers a year and a half ago that stopped me from communicating, and made me feel drunk most of the time - I have stopped using them now and with my physio work-outs I hope to get back in the action later this year.

I have been watching the drives, and was keeping up-to-date on GOCE's pages, but I am nearly a year behind now! Apologies for not supporting you all, it has been chaotic and a little depressing being unable to help, I did so love the drives and the camaraderie :) Chaosdruid (talk) 21:09, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Oh, I'm really sorry to hear that! Obviously, taking care of your health is the most important thing. Wikipedia can wait. But I'm glad to hear that you're improving. I've had the same issues with my growing family. I prioritize spending time with my little boys over sitting in my office working on articles, but still squeeze in work when I can. Come back whenever you're up for it; I'm sure there will be many more drives in the future. Cheers. —Torchiest talkedits 13:34, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

Raising the dead

I haven't looked any of them up on a HighBeam search or anywhere else, but maybe you may have something to add here? BOZ (talk) 23:38, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

For starters, if you had anything to add to Paul Bonner and Sue Ellen Brown that would help. BOZ (talk) 19:02, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
I'll try to take a look at a few of those today. —Torchiest talkedits 13:44, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

GOCE July 2013 news report

Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Front 242 albums

I undid the redirect for Mut@ge.Mix@ge because the 2-year-old AfD didn't account for WP:GNG, which the article's subject satisfies (other specific notability guidelines don't supercede the GNG, the notability guidelines all work in conjunction with each other. As for Live Target, the band list it as part of their official discography on their own website [1], so they seem to consider it official. It's not that unusual for bands to adopt what would otherwise be "bootleg" live recordings if they like it enough, especially if it's a soundboard recording. - Who is John Galt? 19:20, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Requested Articles

Hi! I am trying to reinvigorate Wikipedia:WikiProject Requested Articles, which, if I get enough pointers that there is some interest, I will re-design, with a design similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, involving drives, to decrease the number of articles listed in the various subpages, and blue link blitzes, involving editors removing all created pages. I am planning, with sufficient interest, to make requested articles 'stricter', i.e. you have to provide two reliable sources, and write a short note explaining why the requested article is notable. There would be a reward system, involving adapted barnstars, similar to the Guild of Copy Editors have here and here. If you have any questions about my aim, or want to indicate that you would sign up to the WikiProject, please say so on my talk page. Thanks! Matty.007 16:32, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Torchiest, I am, as you see above, trying to re-invigorate the WikiProject. However, I wanted to use the system of Blitzes and Drives, with Barnstars. Did you have to attain permission to use the barnstars, and adapt them, or did you just do it? Thanks, Matty.007 12:00, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Barnstars are free-to-use by anybody for any purpose. Since they're just for fun, there aren't any official channels to go through. The only time I've seen people take issue is when people give themselves barnstars or spam them to lots of different users. But even those types of extreme cases are usually just ignored. I created the 10k copy edit barnstar myself and never had any problems. You shouldn't have any either. —Torchiest talkedits 13:10, 30 July 2013 (UTC)4
OK, thanks. Matty.007 13:29, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Which program did you use for the 10K barnstar? Thanks, Matty.007 13:30, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Hahaha, I am not a graphic artist by any stretch of the imagination. I just used good old MS Paint. I'm sure Paint.NET or Gimp would be great to use, if you have the technical skills, which I don't. —Torchiest talkedits 13:36, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, just another question: how did you get participation up at the GOCE? Thanks, Matty.007 07:04, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Probably the biggest boosts to participation early on were getting a write-up in The Signpost and getting Jimbo Wales to copy edit an article in one of the drives about three years ago. —Torchiest talkedits 12:48, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
OK, I will have a think about those things. I think the Signpost is more likely than Jimbo Wales, but I will try anyway. Thanks for all your help. Matty.007 13:14, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

GOCE

Hi Torchiest,

I haven't put a tag on the articles I copy edited in the July drive, is that OK? Have I always got to put a tag on copy edited articles? Thanks, Matty.007 18:18, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

No, not at all. I almost never do, unless it's a substantial edit to a major article that I plan to keep on my watchlist afterwards. —Torchiest talkedits 20:51, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. A quick heads up: when people sign up for the August blitz at GOCE, the link that comes up whilst editing goes to the April drive, rather than the June one. I don't know how to fix this, or I would have done it myself, but thought that you might know. Thanks, Matty.007 08:13, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)} The trick is to edit Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/BlitzIntro. I've done this, and also fixed the redlink on the blitz page. --Stfg (talk) 08:43, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Yes, it is fixed now. Thanks, I wasn't sure how to do it, and thought it may be best to fix it earlier. Matty.007 10:26, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
I just realised I won't be here for the August drive. Should I unsuscribe, leave it with rollover words, or do some early? Thanks, Matty.007 10:36, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for that, Stfg. I knew forgot something. And yes, you'll just have to take a pass this time. Unless you can squeeze one article in at the very end or very beginning? Are you going to be gone the entire week? —Torchiest talkedits 12:07, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Going on then 10 August, back 22? August. Sorry, I think that means I can't participate this time. Never mind, I can do the next one. Thanks, Matty.007 12:12, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 July newsletter

We're halfway through this year's penultimate round, and the competition is moving along well. Pool A's Canada Sasata (submissions) currently leads overall, while Pool B's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) is second. Both leaders are WikiCup veterans, and both have already scored over 600 points this month. If the round were to end today, London Miyagawa (submissions), with 274 points, would be the lowest-scoring participant to make it through. This indicates that participants will need a score comparable to last year's (573, the highest ever) to qualify for the final. The high scores this year are a testament both to the quality of participants and to the increased focus on significant content (eligible for bonus points) in this year's competition. So far this round, both Sasata and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) have made up over half of their score through bonus points, with, for example, high importance FA koala earning Sasata a total of 440 points (from a multiplier of 4.4) and high-importance GA sea earning Cwmhiraeth a total of 216 points (from a multiplier of 7.2). Other articles on important topics submitted this round include a featured article on the Norman conquest of England by Wyoming Ealdgyth (submissions), and good articles on Nobel laureate in literature Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate in physics Hans Bethe, and the noted Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryū. These articles are by Poland Piotrus (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) and Sturmvogel_66 respectively.

Other than that, there is not much to report! If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
