Recent Changes to United Press International Article

A couple of comments about your recent edit referring to the first use of a teleprinter by a wire service. I wanted to point out that Teletype redirects to Teleprinter. Second, the teleprinter in question was manufactured by Kleinschmidt and called a printing telegraph or a "telegratype" which eventually was shortened to "teletype" - but not in the 1914 - 1915 timeframe. Finally, the Trademark for the Teletype Corporation teleprinters was not applied for until the late 1920s. so the sentence could be reworded to read:

In 1914 UP is the first wire service to use the teleprinter, now commonly known as the Teletype. Bold text used to show the possible changes.

If you want to change the date of first use of a teleprinter by UP to 1915, there are some other issues as there are a number of independent sources that show that AP was using teleprinters in 1914. Among these are:

I do have problems with the reference from the UPI website (http://100years.upi.com/history_ms_1911.html).

First of all, the picture captioned "1914: UPI Teletype" is actually a Teletype Corporation Model 15 that was not produced until 1930. And, the webpage goes on credit Edward Kleinschmidt as the inventor of the teletype, something that is not borne out in the US Patent records. I cannot find another source that credits UP with first use of the teletype other than UPI's reference to Press critic Oswald GarrisonVillard. Wa3frp (talk) 00:13, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]


A couple of additional comments, yes today a teletype can refer to the large variety of teleprinter equipment that was manufactured in the USA, especially if you reside in the USA. But, there was also Kleinschmidt and in this instant case, the teleprinter equipment used by UP was made by Kleinschmidt. Teletype Corporation had not yet been formed and the word used was "telegraptype" which was a combination of "telegraph" and "type" reflecting the fact that you could send and receive print, like a typewriter without the need for a Morse operator. The word telegraptype was later shortened to teletype and then became a Registered Trademark. Outside the USA, Creed, Siemens & Halske, Olivetti, and Lorentz were the big teleprinter manufacturers. I understand your personal experience, possibly USA based, but if you were in Europe, you would probably not be using a Teletype teleprinter unless you were with a USA based company or with the US Military and then the US Military continued to use both Kleinschmidt and Teletype.Wa3frp (talk) 11:11, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
