New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

Hello Teblick,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

McFarland

Is your access to McFarland still active? If so, could I ask you to verify something for me? Thanks. DS (talk) 01:43, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DS, I don't have an interactive account with McFarland. For several years I requested books that McFarland made available to Wikipedia editors, but that is the extent of my connection with the company. I just submitted the requests, and they sent PDFs of the books. I doubt that I could help unless you happen to need something verified in one of the books that I received. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:50, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Given the topics you've written articles about, I find it plausible that The Television Horrors of Dan Curtis: Dark Shadows, The Night Stalker and Other Productions, 1966-2006 (by Jeff Thompson, 2009) might be one of those books, although I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it's not. DS (talk) 02:01, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wish I could help, DS, but that is not one of the titles that I have. Most of mine are directories or encyclopedias related to radio and TV. Is your need something that I might look up in those?
If not, you might try Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange to maybe find someone who has that book. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:10, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's more film-related, to be honest. Thank you anyway.
(Several years back, I wrote an article which - sigh - I did not cite properly. Eventually, someone who is now inactive cited one of that article's more sensitive statements to the Thompson. Now I'm getting a report that the Thompson doesn't actually support that statement. Until such time as I can check the Thompson or have someone else do so, I've commented it out.) DS (talk) 02:18, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DS, You might try requesting a copy from McFarland. The McFarland page in the Wikipedia Library's database access section indicates that the company still makes books available to qualified Wikipedia editors. It's worth a try. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:29, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Patricia Peardon's article

Thanks for all of your work creating the article for Patricia Peardon. Does the source cited say that she attended Ridgewood High School? Why were the Ridgewood lads confused about her age being 26 or 30 if she was still attending high school. I've searched through Newspapers.com and I can't pin down a high school for her. Am I missing something in the source? Any other ideas? Alansohn (talk) 01:22, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for raising those questions, Alansohn. I realize now that I made an assumption that the cited source does not support, so I have removed mention of Ridgewood High School. The relevant cited newspaper article mentions "Ridgewood youths" and the Peardon family's moving to Ridgewood, but it does not say that she attended that school. The only school that I found specifically mentioned for her was Oakley Hall.
I appreciate your help and your adding her to two articles. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:38, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Work at Tracy Camilla Johns page

As a fellow contributor there, have a look in at my edits today. Mostly what I did was reorder some text chronologically, and then check and complete all citations. I found one misused citation (reference to the Nike commercial, but no mention to Johns or Spike Lee, and so too general). If you can find a citation to that, or any unsourced statement, we can move the article even further toward being verifiable and reliable. This fine actor deserves as much. Cheers. 2601:246:C700:F5:85F7:4FCC:F3D:9A5A (talk) 04:24, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your efforts to improve that article. Improvements to Wikipedia articles are always welcome. I have added her date of birth (with two citations) and added a citation for the two films that were previously uncited. Eddie Blick (talk) 14:04, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CHANGING INPUT WITH NO BASIS CAUSE

What right do you have to change my edit of Jan Clayton on Gunsmoke??

She WAS the last major episode actor to be seen on screen with Dennis Weaver (as he escorts her to the stage - never to be seen again). This was his last appearance on the long running Western Series, and it surprised a lot of people (who still yearn for him).

EXPLAIN your justification for removing my post - and don’t tell me it needs some ridiculous supporting documentation - I watched & know the entire series multiple times and look for these moments - and take my time out to shore them. It’s fact.

(Get off your high horse & get outta Dodge!!). Cduffynyc (talk) 07:20, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cduffynyc, I'm sorry to hear that you consider supporting documentation to be "ridiculous". We differ in that regard, because I feel that valid documentation is a cornerstone of Wikipedia (or at least it should be).
Since you do not accept my removal of the text on that basis, may I suggest Wikipedia:No original research as a basis for removal? The beginning of that article says: "Wikipedia articles must not contain original research. The phrase "original research" (OR) is used on Wikipedia to refer to material—such as facts, allegations, and ideas—for which no reliable, published sources exist. This includes any analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to reach or imply a conclusion not stated by the sources."
I gather from your comments above that the content in question came only from your own observations of multiple episodes of Gunsmoke. Do you have other sources that support it? The rest of that paragraph about original research says, "To demonstrate that you are not adding original research, you must be able to cite reliable, published sources that are directly related to the topic of the article and directly support the material being presented." Eddie Blick (talk) 20:20, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your reply Eddie, including its tenor, and I thank you.

It’s unfortunate that apparently Wiki’s legal department wrote the billions of rules - unreadable to the average person who simply loves sharing observations with others on these incredible shows. Your explanation on observations makes more sense; but no single written rule can cover everything.

Specifically, my point of the last observation of Chester on Gunsmoke will never be found. Yes, there are documents that support this episode as Chester’s final performance - but there won’t be anyone documenting his final walk with this actress.

However, taking five minutes to view the challenged point, would show that in this rare instance, (an interesting note of an actress walking off screen with one of the most famous western characters of the 60’s & 70’s final seconds) should support this hard & fast rule from being applied.

As a retired NYPD Sergeant, my respect for documentation and proper protocol is deeply embedded, but I also learned that at times simple logic trumps “rules”, because no rule can cover all, and that logic should be applied here.

Again, I thank you for taking time to give such a full and respectful reply, you are certainly a gentleman. Charley Cduffynyc (talk) 06:30, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not supported in text ?

I don't understand your changes here. You cleared "birth_place" and removed her first husband from "Spouse" but I fail to understand why. Your reason is "Not supported in text". What's that suppose to mean? -- Lyverbe (talk) 11:10, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lyverbe, In response to your question, let me ask you to read MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE. In particular, I will point out this part of the first sentence, ". . . keep in mind the purpose of an infobox: to summarize (and not supplant) key facts that appear in the article . . ."
An infobox is intended to a brief, at-a-glance, summary of certain facts that are contained in the article it accompanies. When I wrote "Not supported in text." in the edit summary, that meant that neither the place of birth nor the first husband's name appeared in the article. Therefore no basis existed for placing them in the infobox.
If the place of birth is added to the article's text with a valid citation, then it should appear in the infobox. The same is true for the first husband's name. Eddie Blick (talk) 13:53, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now I understand. Perhaps "Not mentioned the article" would have been better but I'm still not sure. That line in MOS:INFORBOXPURPOSE makes it all clear. Thanks. -- Lyverbe (talk) 15:29, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lanphier family

My source on the reference to Thomas Lanphier, Jr. in his brother's article was Thomas Lanphier, Jr.'s own Wikipedia article. Are you saying that another article in Wikipedia is not a reliable source for a Wikipedia article? (It is undeniable that the credit Thomas Lanphier, Jr. received for shooting down Admiral Yamamoto's plane was later questioned and his account of the events was disputed.) Rontrigger (talk) 02:06, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rontrigger, As far as I could see, the parenthetical sentence about Thomas Lanphier Jr. had no citation. That was why I reverted it. Content of Wikipedia articles should be cited to reliable sources. That enables anyone who wants to verify the content to check it in the cited source.
You asked, "Are you saying that another article in Wikipedia is not a reliable source for a Wikipedia article?" I didn't know prior to reading your message that the content came from a Wikipedia article, but the answer to your question is "Yes, that's what I'm saying."
Please see WP:CIRCULAR, which says (in part), "Do not use articles from Wikipedia (whether English Wikipedia or Wikipedias in other languages) as sources, since Wikipedia is a user-generated source." Eddie Blick (talk) 02:28, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will apologize for my apparent failure to include the citation. I could've sworn I had done so.
If the text of Wikipedia articles is not an approved source, what about links to sources in the footnotes of such articles? Rontrigger (talk) 02:57, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those things happen sometimes. One thing about Wikipedia is that other editors will usually spot our mistakes and deal with them.
With regard to your question, as long as a citation in an article is from a reliable source, you can use that same source in another article. You should check first to verify that the cited source actually supports the content. I sometimes find content in an article with a good, reliable source cited, but when I look at the source the content does not appear there. Verification is important. Eddie Blick (talk) 17:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Forman

Hi! I've written a brief, choppy article that does not do justice to the career of Bill Forman. HeDo you happen to know when he died? I'd love to include his year of death, but I don't have it yet. I have a few more things to add (like Harris-Faye Show announcing), but as Forman has been on my list for some time, I thought it preferable to have an imperfect article sooner than a better one down the road. Anyway, anything you can add will be appreciated. Thanks. DiamondRemley39 (talk) 03:11, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's at AfD because the user who didn't like how "incomplete" it was has moved the goalposts to Forman isn't notable enough because he doesn't have multiple productions under his belt... DiamondRemley39 (talk) 14:13, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DiamondRemley39, Thanks for your note. I will try to find some material that could help you. I will either reply here or post a message on your talk page after I look around. Eddie Blick (talk) 17:07, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DiamondRemley39, I found two fairly significant articles that show more coverage of Forman. I hope they will help. Unfortunately, I have not found any source of information about Forman's death.
Eddie Blick (talk) 18:26, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I added those. I may be able to find his death now that I've got the names of his kids.
Well, I'd better be shoveling off! DiamondRemley39 (talk) 19:50, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Best of luck in your continuing search! And thanks for the reminder of Digby O'Dell. Eddie Blick (talk) 00:38, 6 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A few more radio biographies...

I threw together 3 more today:

  • Thonnis Calhoun - Quite light coverage, but I think his credits are not... well unified?
  • Antony Ellis - I'm working on getting the date of his divorce (not that it's super important, but he *was* married to Miss Kitty, and then married someone else after her, and such info could go on Georgia Ellis' article as well, so...)
  • Byron Kane - He was so prolific that I just pulled some things together to get it started. It's shabby! I've seen his birth name given as Byron Harold Kaplan, but I haven't had a chance to look into that yet and "Can't cite it? Don't say it" is kind of how I roll.

Anyway, there they are. I'll do a little more work soon, especially on Kane, who has surprisingly little personal coverage that I've found. At least nothing has been sent to AfD... but it's early in the day. Please fiddle with them if you've got time/interest. Thanks! DiamondRemley39 (talk) 20:59, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will look at them. If I can find anything useful, I will add it. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:03, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
DiamondRemley39, I added a couple of things to the Kane article. I will keep my eyes open for more on any of the three as I have the opportunity. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:49, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!!! Quite helpful! DiamondRemley39 (talk) 21:37, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com clip link

How did you determine the URL for the Newspapers.com link? The ID number that you used is totally different than the one I had used, so I don't see how you map one to the other. Thanks. holly {chat} 20:33, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Howcheng, I used the "clipping" feature on Newspapers.com and replaced the original URL with the URL of the clipping.
When you have a newspaper page open on Newspapers.com, the upper-right corner of the browser window should show several options: Clip, Print/Download, Share, and Save to Ancestry.
When you click on Clip, the cursor should change to a shape like a cross or a plus sign. You can use that cursor to draw a box around the article that you want to cite. Each corner of the rectangle will have a circle around it, and you can drag on any or all of the circles to adjust the shape of the rectangle until it fully encloses the article.
On the right side of the browser you should see a blue Save Clipping button. Clicking that button will create a file on the Newspapers.com site with the generic title "untitled clipping". If you want to specify a name for the clipping, you can designate that name in the "Add a title" box on the right before you click the Save Clipping button.
You need one more step to access the newly created file. The outlined story still shows with the rest of the page in the background, but to the right you should see a blue link ("untitled clipping" or whatever name you gave it). Clicking on that link should bring up the clipped article. Use the URL from that clipping in the citation, and you will provide a freely-available copy of the article.
I have made the process sound more complicated than it really is. You should get accustomed to the steps quickly. Then anyone will be able to read the cited articles without having a subscription to Newspapers.com. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:16, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IMDb as a source

Hi. I was planning to update the entry on Raymond J. Barry as the last sentence is incorrect. It states that he will be appearing in the 2021 feature film Filthy Animals; however, according to IMDb this will not be released until July 2023. In your updates to the page, you previously removed an IMDb link as an unreliable source – are there other film database resources that are regarded as reliable? Many thanks StartledFish (talk) 13:00, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@StartledFish, That's a good question. I will direct you to Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Resources#Databases. Some of the sources listed there are good and some are not. Check the "Notes and limitations" column regarding the credibility (or lack thereof) for each source listed.
You mainly should avoid any site that allows users to add or edit content. That's what causes problems with conte found in IMDb and Film Reference. See WP:USERGENERATED for comments regarding sites like those.
I hope these comments help you. Eddie Blick (talk) 15:19, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is really helpful thank you. Having explored the various DBs, my conclusion is that none are as good as IMDb! Which shows the power of user generated content, but I completely get that is therefore not a definitive source.
Thanks again for your advice StartledFish (talk) 14:30, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, @StartledFish. I think the best use for IMDb and other user-generated databases is as starting points for additional research. If we see something in one of them, then we can look in reliable sources to try to verify the information. Eddie Blick (talk) 14:49, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Just wanna says thanks for providing that archived link on Kate Mansi's page. I would have done it myself, but I still don't know how to properly ref archived links. Kcj5062 (talk) 23:55, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, @Kcj5062.
If a citation to a website uses the "Cite web" template, you can just add these parameters and the appropriate values to the existing citation:
|archive-url=
|url-status=
|archive-date=
The citation that you mentioned had not used "Cite web", so I just created a new citation and deleted the original one. ("Cite web" has boxes for the three parameters above.) Eddie Blick (talk) 00:05, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Teblick,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Barbara Bain's birthdate

Then find a reliable source for Barbara Bain's birthdate instead of just removing important information; don't just do half a job. The fact is that all sources say 13 September 1931 — and so does every other Wikipedia (perhaps you'd better go through them all). Kelisi (talk) 18:37, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Kelisi, The editor who adds content is responsible for providing a valid citation for that content. Please see WP:BURDEN.
I don't know how many sources (or which sources) you refer to in "all sources say 13 September 1931". Since you know what they are, you need to find one that meets the standards of Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Add the date with such a reliable source cited, and the problem will be resolved.
I have not looked at "every other Wikipedia" (or any of them). Perhaps one of them contains a citation to a reliable source for Barbara Bain's date of birth. If so, you could create a citation to that same source for this Wikipedia. Eddie Blick (talk) 19:06, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The constant DOB blanking is one of your most counterproductive editing habits, Teblick. When you delete information that is fundamental, or put a "citation needed" tag next to basic uncontradicted facts, you're making it appear as though the subject of the article is a liar or is somehow questionable, and I don't like that implication.
I've noticed that after a tag has been there for a while, you use it as grounds to do away with entire paragraphs, and we're left with big gaps that make the article confusing and unsuitable. And often the info you erase can be easily sourced anyway, which makes me think these kind of destructive edits are on purpose.
I would say the majority of your edits are devoid of common sense. There was an article, can't remember which one, where you changed the birthdate of some actress from the silent era because you found a so-called "reliable source" even though it obviously was wrong. Newsflash: before the internet, roughly a quarter of the human population lied about their age. Discrepancies will always come up, and one has to be discerning, not willfully ignorant.
Not saying this is the case with Barbara. Her age has never been a matter of dispute as far as I can tell. But it's a prevalent thing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yours6700 (talkcontribs) 03:36, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Help

Hi. I wonder if you could help me. You are good at reverting unsourced birthdates. I did that with Louise Siversen since there are two dates and years that are floating around but when I try to add the "Valid citation required for date of birth" in the info box the whole page gets messed up despite that I have done in the same way as on Heidi Lenhart and George Cheung. DrKilleMoff (talk) 02:08, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DrKilleMoff, Thanks for asking. It's nice to hear from someone who wants to help with removing unsourced dates of birth for living people.
I checked the edit history for Louise Siversen, and I think I found the problem. The markup for a comment has two parts: <!-- before the comment and --> at the end of it. It looks like you omitted the second part on that edit.
If you use source editor, the simplest thing to do is highlight the line of text about a citation being required and then look below the editing box, where you should see a bunch of Wiki markup options. The third from the end contains the beginning and ending markup for a comment, and if you click on it, they will be inserted at the beginning and end of the highlighted comment. That way you don't have to remember what markup to put where.
By the way, I usually include "(WP:BLPPRIVACY)", without the quotation marks, in the comment so that other editors can see why I removed the date. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:28, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Great. It worked now. Thank you. DrKilleMoff (talk) 02:58, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DrKilleMoff, You're welcome! I appreciate your efforts in this regard. Unfortunately, some editors seem to not understand the importance of BLPPRIVACY. We need more people to keep an eye out for dates of birth that are unsourced or have unreliable sources. Eddie Blick (talk) 13:08, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable Sources list

Hi, I hope you don't mind, but I was looking through your reliable/unreliable sources list and it's a pretty interesting list. And I agree that the majority of those aren't reliable. In fact, I have a few suggestions for you to add to the unreliable list. Allmovie, TVinsider and Moviefone. Because like Rotten Tomatoes, they may be reliable for certain departments, but also like Rotten Tomatoes they have the incorrect DOBs for some actors. Which makes them questionable when it comes to WP:BLP because for all we know they could be just getting that info from other sites. For instance

Here's the bios they have for John Leguizamo who's true birth year was revealed to be 1960 yet they have it listed as 1964. [1][2][3]

Here's the bios they have for Tanya Roberts whose true age was revealed after she passed.[4][5][6]. What's interesting is the latter two have the date that she passed, but still the incorrect birth year.

Here's the bios they have for Judith Hoag. Who actually stated in a Youtube video she uploaded last year that she'd be turning 60 in 2023.[7][8]

Here's the bios they have for Edie McClurg.[9][10]. Now her true DOB hasn't been publicly revealed however this article from last summer has her age listed as 77. Which would make her birth year around 1944/1945 whereas those sites have 1951 listed.[11] And if you go to her talk page, I had started a discussion about her birth year because her high school year book is on classmates and it lists her as having graduated in 1962.

And here's the real kicker. Allmovie has 1984 for Laverne Cox's birth year even though her actual one was revealed about 7 years ago.[12]

You'll probably think I'm a bit crazy for doing all this digging lol. But I'm just trying to be cautious and not just use anything I come across as a source for WP:DOB. Because that's what a lot of people on Wikipedia seem to be doing. As well as using refs that you and I both know aren't reliable sources. Kcj5062 (talk) 14:13, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that messabe, @Kcj5062. I have wondered about the reliability of AllMovie. Your research definitely argues against its credibility as far as dates of birth are concerned.
Would you mind submitting what you posted here to Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources/Perennial sources? I would like to have something posted on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources to add a sort of "official" status of lack of credibility. That would also help other editors to deal with the situation. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:36, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Finding a reliable source is going to be easier said than done. But the information that I readded was definitely correct. As it has been stated and supported by multiple sites and sources. I also noticed that you removed her middle name which is definitely correct. She even goes by the name 'Angela Bethany Goethals-soder' on Facebook. 'Soder' is the last name of her husband.

Though I understand that Facebook probably isn't a reliable source, and that there's no easy way to confirm that she's the one controlling the account, and not just someone that she's close to. Even though I am convinced that she's the one controlling the account, since the odds of her not being the one controlling the account are very slim.

I have no reason to believe that her middle name isn't Bethany, and that she wasn't born on the 20th May 1977. I'm pretty sure that you can agree with me on that, given the amount of evidence we have. Reliable source or not. I'm no great shakes at providing sources to confirm one's middle name or date of birth. But if I ever find one, I will check the reliability of it when adding it to her page. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 00:58, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@C.Syde65, The situation that you described is not unusual. Many sources contain what may or may not be a person's date of birth and/or birth name. The question is, "Are those sources reliable?" Some are WP:USERGENERATED, which means anyone might have added the content. Some give no indication of the origin of their content. Some repost content from other sources with no regard to the reliability or accuracy of that content.
Wikipedia is supposed to provide content that (a) comes from reliable sources and (b) can be verified by checking with the cited sources. Failure to do so undermines the credibility of the particular article and, to some extent, the credibility of Wikipedia as a whole.
You said, "the information that I readded was definitely correct" and "you removed her middle name which is definitely correct". How do you know that they are "definitely correct"? If the sources are reliable, they can be used as citations. If they are not reliable, you can't be sure of the accuracy.
The three paragraphs above apply to all content on Wikipedia, but when an article is about a living person, an additional policy applies. WP:DOB is clear: "Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object to the details being made public." The only way we editors can demonstrate such publication is by providing citations to reliable sources.
If we don't have a reliable source for a living person's date of birth and full name, that content should not appear in the article. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:36, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Perennial source exception per WP:ABOUTSELF?

Re your revert of an edit to Jodi Long. I did not know that Broadway World was a redlisted perennial source, though it does look sketchy anyway. Despite this, because it is an interview with the subject of the article, I used it under the premises of WP:ABOUTSELF/WP:SELFSOURCE (Nos. 4 & 5—there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity and the Wikipedia article is not based primarily on such sources) only to establish the subject's birth name and her father's stage name. This is important as Wikipedia had unsourced incorrect information on this topic in the article for five years until you removed it a few days ago. In the interview, she seems to be responding specifically to this error. Such WP:ABOUTSELF exceptions were brought up by other discussants leading up to the redlisting. —  AjaxSmack  15:57, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, @AjaxSmack. I appreciate that feedback. I am not familiar with the policies that you cited. I apologize for my error. Please feel free to add whatever you wish to the article. I am removing it from my watchlist. Eddie Blick (talk) 18:40, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reviewing sources against the page. I think most (maybe all) of the information removed was from before my edits. I believe most can be returned with source-verified material later. ~~~~ Calebrw (talk) 04:47, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The reliability of CTVA

I'm a bit confused why CTVA is considered unreliable. I've added it to external links on The Adventures of Ellery Queen if that's ok. Other independent sources confirm the existence of the series and the dates on which it ran, but the list of episodes comes from CTVA only (or from IMDB which is clearly copying from them). Jack234567 (talk) 19:32, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jack234567, The entry at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 92#ctva.biz indicates that IMDb is one of the sources used to compile content on CTVA. Because IMDb is WP:USERGENERATED and therefore unreliable, the content on CTVA has to be considered unreliable, too.
Use of CTVA as an external link should be okay. Criteria for external links are less strict than those for citations to support an article's content. Eddie Blick (talk) 19:52, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tyrone Power

Anne Power is Tyrone Power’s adopted daughter. She doesn’t count? Madelinedelon (talk) 04:44, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Madelinedelon, Thank you for your question. I assume that you are referring to my removal of her name from the infobox on Tyrone Power. I did so because of Wikipedia's guidelines for content of an infobox on a biography. Please go to Template:Infobox person#Parameters. The explanation for the "children" parameter says, in part, "... only list names of independently notable or particularly relevant children." In that context, "notable" generally means that Wikipedia contains a separate article about the child. I found only one Wikipedia article with that name (Anne Power). It does not mention Tyrone Power, so it apparently is about a different person.
Anne Powers's being adopted has nothing to do with omitting her name from the infobox. Many biographies on Wikipedia contain names of children by birth in the text, but those names are not listed in the infobox because of the guideline that I mentioned above.
On a related note, I looked at the article again after I read your message, and I realized that the paragraph that mentions the adoption is unsourced. I have added a "Citation needed" template at the end of the paragraph. Perhaps you could add a citation to support the adoption; otherwise that paragraph probably will be removed at some point, per Wikipedia:Verifiability. Eddie Blick (talk) 14:57, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the info. I will add the citation. Actually she was Anne Power Werner, married at one time to the actor Oskar Werner. Madelinedelon (talk) 19:34, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rebecca Holden birthdate revert

Hello and good day. Is it ok to re-enter her birthdate and city born if I use another source? I found 2 of them: Knight-rider-fandom.com and Famousbirthdays.com. All agree she was born 6/12/1958 in Dallas, Texas. Thank you for your time and have a good day.Theairportman33531 (talk) 04:47, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question, @Theairportman33531. Unfortunately, neither Knight-rider-fandom.com nor Famousbirthdays.com is a reliable source for use in Wikipedia articles.
You can see comments about Famousbirthdays.com at WP:FAMOUSBIRTHDAYS. Immediately below that section is WP:FANDOM, which applies to any website that contains "fandom" in its URL.
You will need to find a source that meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Also, please read WP:BLPPRIVACY, which provides additional criteria when the subject of a biography is living.
I appreciate your interest in adding to Wikipedia. I hope that you can find a source that meets the appropriate standards. Eddie Blick (talk) 14:37, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stephen Dunne birth record

Thank you for the information regarding imdb.com and findagrave.com not being credible citations. Why don't you delete the birth information altogether as there is no credible source yet to be found? Just curious, thank you for your time. Lime green k (talk) 07:33, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lime green k, The date has a citation, although it has the "better source needed" template. I don't know who added that template. I'm not familiar with the source that is cited, but as far as I know, it has not been classified as unreliable, as IMDb and Find A Grave have.
I don't immediately remove unsourced dates of birth from articles about dead people. I prefer to add a "Citation needed" template to alert editors to the need for a citation. I hope in those cases that someone will find a reliable source to add to the article.
However, if an article is about a living person, I do immediately remove an unsourced date of birth. The situation is different because of WP:BLPPRIVACY, which prohibits having unsourced dates of birth and full names in articles about living people.
