I just follow exactly what it says on the categories. That's why it's on my Talk Page.

For now, I'm not quite prepared to work with my User Page anyways, so this will make do for now. Tarikochi 16:20, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A good Hearty Well done

Well done on uploading all those clips onto the Runescape series, it really livened up the place! Keep up the good work! J.J.Sagnella 21:37, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glad that I'm able to help. I dreamed of making an animated RuneScape-Wikipedia articles, and it looks like that is coming close to accomplishment. Maybe I may also add regular screenshots for once, heh. Thanks for appreciating them; I put a lot of effort into it! P.S.: It's funny that you said this the same day I planned on uploading more clips. Tarikochi 08:53, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A few questions.

I just have a few questions to ask. I am in no rush for answers, but it would be very appreciated to be answered. Sorry if these questions were already answered somewhere on the site, but I was unable to locate them.

1. While viewing the "History" of pages, what do the colors of the users' names that edits come from mean? For usernames, I have seen the colors blue, purple, red, and pink so far. I assume that blue and purple are browser defaults, but what does red and purple mean, as I've seen this even when logged out of Wikipedia.

2. Do I need to cite copyright information on which programs I have used for various graphics? For example, do I need to mention Camtasia Studio 3 in the process of making GIF animations, and do I need to mention Macromedia Fireworks and Microsoft Paint for other image-editing necessities? If so, how should I cite these?

3. Can Animated GIFs captured from a game be considered a Video Game Screenshot?

Thanks again for all the help!

1- The colors doesn't really mean anything in signatures as everyone might change them as they wish, but in historypages and similar, a blue link means that there is a page at the other end of the link, a red link means that the page the link points to haven't been created, while a purple, and possibly also pink are browser defaults for links you have opened.
2- You do not have to mention them, but it could be informative for other users if you mention it briefly on the image description page.
3- If the animation contains screenshots from a game, I'd say that it should be regarded as an in-game screenshot just to be safe, but others might disagree. Bjelleklang - talk 02:29, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for contributions to RuneScape page!

To answer your question, that vandalism was there for 13 minutes. Thanks for the keen eye out. You might want to play with the history tab a little. It's a powerful tool, especially when dealing with vandalism.

You do a nice job with the animations—they're well made. I particularly like the giant mole and baby, though. I think the site could use a better representation of what the monsters look like—it adds more color and variety. Cilencia 07:19, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your help is needed...

If you have the time I wondered if you can help me with animating 2 of the Runescape images. The links are here and at their current one-frame position, they do not look very good. Here are the links. [Image:RuneScape puppet.jpg marionettes] and [Image:RS whack.jpg rubber chicken, (would love it if it was me being hit)] Thnaks for your help. J.J.Sagnella 14:55, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • All my animations are done in-game, so I cannot animate just the screenshot. Sorry.

The programs I used to make animations is Camtasia Studio 3 for recording and Fireworks MX for editing. Maybe that'll help you at your goals of making animations. Tarikochi 17:47, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if you misunderstood, but please may you video your character playing with a marionette, or whacking someone with a rubber chicken? If you can thank you so much. J.J.Sagnella 17:51, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question

Mind if I add a few images of my character here and there? The reason I do this is just to give the pages variety; if everyone saw you in every picture, the articles would look repetitive.--Cool Spy0 00:44, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As long as it doesn't replace any of mine, then I'm fine with it. Tarikochi 02:43, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the page could use greater variety—what's wrong with replacing a few of your images if appropriate? Cilencia 16:48, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is due to the fact that focusing on replacing images rather than adding them in other empty locations would really not improve how content is displayed in my opinion. I also place a huge amount of work into such images, as I make sure that animations would make perfect loops (with no scenery or in-game animation distortions as what RuneScape tends to do) and that every image would carry only the subjects. Also, it has already been made, so I do not see a reason why to make it again (thus I did not make nor upload the "Whack with Rubber Chicken" animation). I placed a disclaimer saying if necessary, then replace. But I see little to no necessity, along with the fact that it is hard to get beyond matching in the exact same subject. Tarikochi 18:19, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Cilencia to a certian extent. While the pages do need variety, I don't think images should be replaced unless it needs to be. Which does bring up when I replaced the Jad image, I know, but that was me being a noob. --Cool Spy0 22:02, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HTML Gallery Tag problem

When I place animated images in a gallery tag, not only does the animation in the thumbnail become distorted, but the image filesize used on the thumbnails is way larger than the original!

This can be seen inside my gallery.

Is there any way to fix this, particularly in either returning it to the appropriate size dimensions and clearing the distortion or preventing the filesize from increasing more than the original?

If this is not possible, is there an alternative to making a gallery-like appearance without the above problems, plus retain its ability to be in rows and columns?

Thanks for any help!

TarikochiGalleryCriticize 21:33, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can use a table to sort your images at "actual" size, its a lot more work than the gallery tag, but it works, see Wikipedia:How to use tables for an overview, and it has links off of it to examples on how to do do them in WikiCode. Alternatively, you _can_ use HTML tables if you find that more comfortable. -Dawson 21:52, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images on your user page

I looked through the images on your user page regarding Runescape and most (if not all) of the images were created via screenshot from you. I realize that you created the images, but you must realize the Image fair use policy that we have on Wikipedia that restricts you from placing the images on your user page, even though you uploaded them. The copyright tags on the screen shots you uploaded state that they are copyrighted and are used under Fair use. I am going to remove the images from your user page or you can, either one of us. Instead of a gallery, I encourage linking the images instead. Links reduce the amount of time used to your load your user page and more convienent for everyone. Thank you! — Κaiba 23:54, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you've been by the talk pages among the RuneScape articles, then you'll see why I have placed all of them in a gallery. There was an incident in which one person single-handedly attempted and succeeded at destroying the images in the RuneScape articles via a result of a chain reaction. People got upset when the images were no where to be found after I IfD'd everything, so I created a gallery to carry all of these images.
Linking to images would simply not work, as not only do I not know how to do this myself, but it was also mean that the images would be orphaned, automatically scoring it an IfD candidate and defeating the purpose. Plus people would not know what it would look like beforehand.
From what I have read in the policies, I am allowed to upload these images to be used in my User Page, even if it is an overload. It being spread into the articles is a simple feature and bonus.
I created the gallery for editors of the RuneScape articles to use in free-will due to I restricted myself from placing the images myself (as mentioned in the RuneScape talk pages). Check out the talk pages of those articles, including those of other articles, and you would understand why the gallery exists as it is now.
There is a warning about the user-page taking a while to load, and I have seen the policies declare me being able to do it. I do not see why it has to go.
TarikochiGalleryCriticize 00:08, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Policy states images with a fair use tag can't be on user pages. If people remove the image, someone will notice eventually. Images aren't deleted as orphans for 7 days or so, so linking them here on your user page and checking them sporadically isn't much of a hassle. If they are orphaned, readd them to where they were last deleted. No image with used with the fair use copyright is allowed on the user space, it wouldn't be fair use if people were allowed to post it on the user space. Fair Use is only to, in this case, describe what the subject is about and or a description of a character in the game. I am going to remove the images. — Κaiba 02:22, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But since I don't know the format you would like your user page to be in, I'll allow you one more time to remove the images yourself before I go and remove them. — Κaiba 02:24, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have replaced the images from gallery to link format. If it is orphaned, readd it to the article. Please, just check periodically to see if the images were removed. A single incident of a user trying to get the images deleted from Wikipedia is no reason to go against copyright laws. If you have any furthur questions, feel free to ask. — Κaiba 18:16, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's Tarikochi's Talk page. Not yours. All Tarikochi needs to do is say they are Jagex's game. J.J.Sagnella 18:18, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From User talk:J.J.Sagnella: I saw your edits to Tarikochi's user and user talk pages. (Techinically, they don't belong to him, but to the Wikipedia community). But the real reason I came hear was to address the images on his user page. The images are used under the fair use copyright status and cannot be placed on his user page. I would appriciate not placing them back on his user page. Thank you! — Κaiba 23:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In your edit summary, you stated that I didn't listen to what you said and it was your page. First off, these userspaces belong to Wikipedia, not to individual editors. Next, the Images have a copyright status of fair use meaning they can only go on articles about what the image is describing. Your user page is not a proper place for these images. Again, you can simply link them and check on them. If they are not placed on articles in referance to what the image is about soon, I am going to tag them as orphans. If you revert to the previous version of your user page with the images in a gallery again, I will start handing out vandalism warnings. — Κaiba 01:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That wasn't no test edit. I have started a section for discussion on WP:AN. Please visit it. — Κaiba 01:09, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I see you have an extensive gallery of images on your userpage. Unfortunately, many of these images are under Fair use, which means they should be used only on articles related to the subject of the picture. The reason for this is that the game RuneScape is copyrighted, to prevent people from stealing it. However this means we can't use images from it under US law, where the Wikimedia foundation is based, except under Fair use. Please remove the images from your userpage, as usage there is not considered Fair use. Also see the guideline for userpages. Thanks, Prodego talk 01:12, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just FYI, you can link to them, that is fine. To link to an Image use the format [[:Image:Imagename]] . Prodego talk 01:25, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The first two links are from the issues that have emerged that caused the gallery and the good faith in its creation, and the next three are information straight from the company that owns the game RuneScape, Jagex, who mentions the "permission in advance" and the ability to use it as long as it does not go against their rules.
I have read what the free-use policies and the what not to include in user pages and according to one of the Jagex articles, the permission was given in advance. As for the free-use, all those images have a purpose as a reference for usage in the RuneScape articles, for those that have a history in editing in those articles.

See this link. Prodego talk 01:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That link is talking about the site. This issue involves in-game images. TarikochiGalleryCriticize 01:49, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The only times Wikipedia can use copyrighted images are when:
  1. The image's copyright holder has allowed the image to be used for any and all purposes
  2. The image's copyright holder has released all rights to the image
  3. The image's copyright holder has allowed the image to be used for any and all purposes, with some restrictions
  4. The image qualifies as fair use
It is specifically stated that: The images can not be used for all purposes. Jagex retains "all rights". If it is under fair use, which is how you tagged the images, WP:FAIR applies. Prodego talk 02:03, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that those images are fine, as they are not being used for commercial purposes. However, if you're really concerned, then try asking Jagex about its stance on the use of RuneScape screenshots on Wikipedia. --Ixfd64 02:06, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Does this not answer that question? — Κaiba 02:12, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That was the exact same thing Prodego just posted, in which I have already responded as specifically mentioned earlier. TarikochiGalleryCriticize 02:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
However, the game is on the RuneScape website, therefore does seem to fall under that provision. Which makes the images fair use. Please remove the images from your userpage, or link to them as I explained above. Prodego talk 02:16, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Would there be a problem using links to the pictures instead of using the pictures? This would have the advantage of the page loading faster, as well as fixing the fair use problem. It would still be a collection of runescape images to use. Is this a satisfactory solution? Prodego talk 02:38, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned in the previous argument and in one of the links mentioned above, linking them will immediately orphan any image not used in the articles. Orphaned images get deleted eventually, so placing them as images is the only way to prevent that. DGX suggests checking the images over and over, which is overly inefficient and the hassle of both admins and regulars of having to deal with orphaning and reorphaning images is more than that of leaving it as it is, which was permitted according to Jagex's Knowledge Base and the reasoning was there as mentioned in the links above. TarikochiGalleryCriticize 13:19, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is against Wikipedia policy and possibly illegal to use fair use images on your userpage. These images are fair use because:
  1. The images came from a copyrighted game
  2. The game is located on the runescape website
  3. The runescape website's policy explicitly forbids using images from the website
The website - it is uncertain if that refers to the images which are specifically contained in the website (that seems to be the expilcit meaning), or the images which are "mechanically generated" by your actions within the game - given the vast number of fansites with screenshots and components of, compared their vigilant action against any cheat sites they can actually get a handle on, they clearly have no problem with free publicity. If you took the statement literally as including in-game images, they would not even be "fair use". Ace of Risk 21:35, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, when you uploaded the images, you listed the licence as Fair Use. You may link to the images from your userpage if you wish. Any images not used in articles will be deleted per image criteria 5 of speedy deletion policy. You may not use these Fair use images on your userpage, policy is clear on this. Thank you. Prodego talk 15:35, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use on user pages

There is no discussion to be had here I'm afraid. Wikipedia's policy is quite clear on this. Unless an image is freely licensed, it can't be used outisde the main namespace. If you continue to restore them you will be blocked. ed g2stalk 15:23, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest you use a free picture host, and link to a gallery of them there for anyone that wants to use them, remember that if you submit images/text to a fan site, the site usually demands copyright, though how that can be claimed on an image which is already fair use is uncertain. Not sure if the rules at wikia and runescape.wikia.com would be more gallery friendly, they could certainly use an image maker of your calibre. I would also point you to Wikipedia:Community_Portal, particularly the point:
