Passiflora tarminina

Hi Rkitko

Thanks for the welcome. I still tring to figure out how things work here - I know rather more about plants than I do about anything computer-related. So far I'm having a play at expanding a stub for a species I know pretty well and for which I have access to much of the relevant literature (Passiflora tarminina). At the moment I'm working in my sandbox until I've got it looking a bit better.

I'd like to ask people to look at what I've got and make comments - I'm not entirely sure of the best way to do this though. It's not really peer review I'm needing as I don't think it is at that stage yet, I more need an indication about whether I'm on the right track, whether there are efficient ways to do things than I am doing them (the markup - if that is the term - looks a total mess) and at what stage I should put the article onto the main page. So I need basic beginner's help but from a plant person.

Thoughts?

Hi there! So far the article being developed in your sandbox looks great. You seem to have picked up all the important tools to create a fantastic article on Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind that I made some changes there. Specifically, when linking to a plural like stipules, instead of writing out [[stipule|stipules]], its easier to forego the piped link and write [[stipule]]s. But that's no big deal and I think there's a bot account that will come around and fix those.
Great job with all those references, too. When citing a named reference above, though, it's not necessary to write out <ref name="Coppens d'Eeckenbrugge">...</ref> when <ref name="Coppens d'Eeckenbrugge" /> works.
And this is more of a style issue, and I'm sure you're well-aware, so I changed the italics around the variety so that the "var." wasn't italicized along with the genus, species, and variety epithets.
And that's about all I could find in the article that needed a little bump. You're using a great format for the article. If you have any further specific questions, let me know. And since you joined WP:PLANTS, you can also use all of the editors there as a resource/soundboard/mini peer-review if you like. Like your name...

Just wanted to say that Solanum dulcamara is a plant name I like a lot too. Has it been introduced to New Zealand? I would appreciate it if you could check some books for the usage of "vine" when you have the chance. It would be nice to get a feel for how it's used everywhere in the English speaking world before we change anything in the article. Thanks! • I'll look into "vine" usage in NZ a bit more. So far I've found that "vine" is defined in the glossary of one of the Flora of NZ series volumes as "a climbing plant with woody stems" (can't remember the exact words) but I can't find it used in the descriptions. So far, it looks like vine is not used in the botanical descriptions in any books in that series, but I'll have to check a bigger sample to be sure. So far, "climber" or variants on "scandent herb" (or shrub etc) seem the most common. The only NZ field guide I have to hand (on weeds) appears to use "vine" almost interchangably with "climber". "Vine" is used in the common names of many climbing plants in New Zealand - Madeira vine (Anredera cordifolia), cup and saucer vine (Cobaea scandens), chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) and of course grapevine. I'll get my references together and post something on the talk page for the article - or should I add it to the discussion on the project page?

Yes, Solanum dulcamara is present in New Zealand - it is naturalised and occasionally considered invasive. Small children occasionally eat the berries too. Despite this, I'm quite fond of it as a plant and I like the name. Solanum dulcamara (talk) 10:54, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plant and Garden wiki

Hi Solanum dulcamara, I'm writing to you because you've edited many of the plant articles. I wanted to let you know about a plants-specific wiki site which you might be interested in contributing to. The site focuses specifically on how to grow any plant. Since Wikipedia is not a how-to, and articles are not allowed to be written as a guide on how to grow plants, two years ago I started http://www.plants.am - a wiki solely to address that topic (much like how wikitravel.org is solely to advise tourists visiting a country or city on their destination).

An example of how the sites differ can be seen immediately by comparing the Wikipedia article on Tamarind, with the Plants.am Tamarind article. Many of the articles currently on the site are placeholder articles taken from Wikipedia which are being rewritten from scratch, or shells of articles using new templates. However, a core of new articles like the Asparagus article (which still has a lot of room to grow) are being created, and the undertaking is huge. Perhaps you have some materials you can add which are not appropriate for Wikipedia.
