Hi Shadowcat60. Regarding the edit to American Pit Bull Terrier:

they can do nicely as an only dog in a family with children over age eight and can handle rough play.

I don't think that's an accurate statement. There are many APBTs that do fine in families with younger children and other dogs (or cats).
