Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Cite news template use of newspaper rather than work

I'm not sure why but you changed the newspaper= to work= in the citations in the Wellington Town Hall article, and elsewhere. I know work covers all bases, but newspaper retains the semantic meaning that the citation is from a newspaper, rather than a magazine, journal or other source. Is there something I don't know? Mōrena Jon, the list of rules in my AWB is longer than my arm. The change commented on by you was incidental as I was tidying up after the (relatively recent) move of the Mayor of Wellington article. Combined with some other AWB rules, those changes can result in the print title to be shown in italics when that was originally not the case (though not in the case of the article in question). Revert of my edit of Extinction Rebellion

Regarding you saying "you are an experienced editor and you reverted a brand-new editor; the least you should do is give an edit summary explaining why you reverted the editor as otherwise, you are simply pushing prospective editors away from Wikipedia" about my rollback at Extinction Rebellion... Thank you for reminding me of this. Their edit felt like vandalism at the time, as it slapped a quote in the middle of things, with broken formatting and breaking a ref, and given there's been other such soapboxing of this article recently, I used Rollback, which was lazy of me. I hope you didn't feel too bad about it, Lopifalko. I didn't check in detail whether it was vandalism but I did spot the stray code, which I manually removed before saving. Yes, it really is important to be nice to newbies; they may not know what they are doing and it's very easy to be frustrated really early on, and then they are lost forever. New article on Christchurch's residential red zone

Kia ora and hello! I am writing to you because you are a Wikipedian from Christchurch, who has edited pages about the 2010-2011 Christchurch earthquakes. I have just finished creating a new article for Christchurch's residential red zone following the earthquakes. However, I am an American who has never visited New Zealand, let alone Christchurch, so I would find it helpful for Wikipedians from Christchurch to look over this article. In particular, I am hoping that someone will be able to contribute an image of the zone after demolition and removal of the houses that were there, especially an aerial image.

Thank you! I am an urban planning student with an interest in natural disaster preparation and recovery, so I saw this article as a hole that I could fill on Wikipedia.

Good on you, Riverhugger. That's awesome work. I've had it on my plate for ages (well, I want to get rid of all the red links in the Christchurch earthquakes navbox). You've done a very good job, especially given that you lack the personal experience of having lived through all this. If you don't mind, I'll convert this from US spelling and date format to the local settings as per MOS:TIES. There's a commons category with dozens of images in it; I've linked it to the article. See WP:LOCALCONSENSUS. NOLY can't allow inclusion of biographies, especially, where there is no no-trivial independent sourcing. Speedy keep is also unavailable where there are good faith Delete !votes, as is the case here. Guy (help!) 09:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This closure is a misapplication of WP:NOLY. NOLY says specifically that a topic passing it is "Athletes from any sport are presumed notable (emphasis added). Guy may challenge that presumption in keeping with NSPORT (of which NOLY is a part of's) statement that "meeting of any of these criteria does not mean that an article must be kept. These are merely rules of thumb which some editors choose to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to keep an article that is on articles for deletion." Came here for the same thing - none of the speedy keep criteria apply in this case. Even if JzG nominated the article disruptively, I'm an uninvolved editor who recommended deletion. Please undo your speedy-keep closure and let the discussion run the usual week. Just to correct the above claims that "Speedy keep is also unavailable where there are good faith Delete !votes", this only applies when the delete !voters are uninvolved (see WP:SKCRIT #2). Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Noma Copley review

Hello Schwede66. Can you please be more specific in what it is that you don't consider encyclopedia language? This is my fifth Wiki entry and I've never had this issue. If you object to the term "life partner," I removed the term life. Since marriage wasn't an option at that time, what other terminology would you suggest? Where else in the article do you have a problem with the language? I've shared this entry with a number of people who are all at loss to suggest what other language needs to be changed in order to get over the threshold to accept this entry. @AMPLIFYHER2020: I stumbled across this article and a very simple way to help you was to point out those areas that were unreferenced. Just so that you can concentrate your efforts there; bios of living people need to be referenced throughout. Beyond that, I'm afraid to say that I have no interest in the topic area. Going by the feedback of the reviewer, you need to show that the person is in fact notable. It would take a while to look through the references that you have got and establish whether that criterion is now satisfied. I don't have that time to spare (nor the necessary interest); I'm sorry.   • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Hi Schwede, thanks for cropping the photo on Wells' page, I put it there and was going to ask somewhere for help cropping it down! Could you crop it again though to just show her and not both of them? I think for an individual bio it's better to just have the picture of the subject of the article. What do you think? My thinking was that given that they are both notable, we should show them both up until the time that he's got his own article. But I don't have strong feelings on the matter.
