Pennsylvania State Parks

It looks like I am the first to talk on your new talk page. Thankfully the bad weather has passed us and Nathalie's family by. Thanks again for the thoughts. I created Salt Springs State Park this afternoon. It was a big project. It seems to be a wonderful place. I would really like to visit it someday. I am pretty sure you are right about Salt Springs State Park not being the only one not run by PA-DCNR. I completey forgot about the "Hiawatha Parking Lot". The Friends of Salt Springs Park website made the claim and I just passed it along. I will make the change now. I will call my parents about the flooding in PA. I hope it isn't too bad. Ryerson Station State Park is up and running. I feel like it needs more info about the fort and dispute of the Virginia and PA claims on the land. Do you have much of this info. I know that you've fixed some of my Indian references in the past. This one may need to be fixed too. I don't know what specific tribes were in the area and leading raids that lead to the building of the fort. By the way my wife is Tuscarora they didn't all leave NC! Elkland

Native Americans

Does she speak any Iroquoian languages? To answer you question, no she doesn't but she is interested in learning. The problem is that very few people speak the Tuscarora language and most of them are in New York or Canada. Her ethnicity is very interesting. She is from Robeson County, North Carolina. This county has a very high population of people who identify themselves as Lumbee. She is adamant that she is not Lumbee. If you read the article you might understand why. The history of the Native Americans in North Carolina is pretty sad. Most people don't realize that many of them never left. Before I moved here I had no idea there was a significant population of Indians anywhere on the east coast. Dincher 01:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

More State Parks

Created four more today. Little Buffalo State Park, Ralph Stover State Park, R. B. Winter State Park, and McCalls Dam State Park. We are driving through the night tonight to PA. I just created Prompton State Park and Lackawanna State Park. I looked at the map for White Deer Hole Creek. The colors for the lines are confusing. The blue and I think it's grey run together. I suggested orange for the county lines. Otherwise the article is great. We passed over White Deer Hole Creek twice on our journey. I am back in Fayetteville and back to work a Penney's. I know what you mean about being worried about dropping the camera in the river. If I took our camera out and dropped it in the water, my wife would kill me! The store is closing in ten minutes!! I created Pine Grove Furnace State Park tonight. That will be it for me tonight. I read your article Pennsylvania Route 554. I had a severe accident on that road when I was in college. I was speeding up the south side of Bald Eagle Mountain, didn't make the turn at the top and woke up in Danville at Geisinger. It is a great road to drive, lots of fun fun turns. Holy crap! I just created Laurel Hill State Park, hit the wrong button and lost it! I did get Laurel Summit State Park and Laurel Mountain State Park finished. They were short and easy. I put lots of work into Laurel Hill State Park and now its gone. I will try to get back to it on the weekend. I feel like I just wasted a lot of my time. Aggravated as heck. White Deer Hole Creek

About 15 years ago. The Williamsport Sun-Gazette ran either an article or a series of articles about "Alvira" and the Ordnance. I don't know if it will contribute to the White Deer Hole Creek article or not and they might be hard to find too, but they were very interesting, including interviews with people who actually had lived in Alvira. You could probably find them on microfilm at the James V. Brown Library in Williamsport. Dincher 02:58, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Regarding, White Deer Hole Creek - the colors show up much better on the large map than on the small map for the new version that is. The picture of the valley is a plus. It gives a picture of the size and beauty of the valley and shows the restoration of the forests. I expanded Varden Conservation Area today. I will get to Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area soon. We did not stop at Milton State Park. I thought that it was too grey and dreary on Wednesday and Friday to stop and take pictures, but the pictures that my parents took at Lyman Run State Park and Hills Creek State Park were also taken on grey days and they look pretty good. The map looks a lot better on my computer at home. Perhaps the monitor at work isn't set up quite right. I think that a picture taken from a kayak in the river would be a very good picture of the Milton State Park. This is a picture I just wouldn't be able to take. You're right about Buchanans' birthplace. I will fix it. I thought of you when I was writing up the the Blue Knob State Park. Bobs Creek flows throught it. Kind of a funny name. Who is Bob? Just a weird name like Larrys Creek. Makes me wonder if there is a Georges Creek or Walts Creek. Have fun with your projects. I am looking forward to learning more about the creeks in my home county. Bald Eagle Mountain

Thanks for the clean up on Bald Eagle Mountain and all the wikilinks. Have a look at Bald Eagle Valley and Nittany Valley, and please add any interesting content you may have. You may also want to check the older article on Mount Nittany as well. Dhaluza 15:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

60 miles is the approximate straight line distance along Bald Eagle Mountain. After that it becomes Brush Mountain which still needs an article. Yes, so much to do. I usually upload the picture, then write the caption, so I know that leaves the picture page blank. I should go back and clean up by cutting and pasting the captions back, but in the mean time, there is always "what links here". I'm not sure what to do about the other Bald Eagle Creek, but I was planning to just add it to the main article, rather than make another, because what would you call it? I think that means we need to expand the BEV article south as well. By all means, expand the BEMt article. My only point was that if you describe the socio-political aspects, that should go in the valley article, because almost nobody lives on the mountain. I added some to the WBSV article, and could use some help with it too.

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Sheshequin Path

I read some of the Sheshequin Path tonight and found a possible mistake in your spelling of Shikellamy. You spelled it with a "ck" I have never seen it spelled that way. Is it a mistake or a spelling variance? Dincher 04:03, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

White Deer Hole Creek

"In 1787, Caleb Farley settled on White Deer Hole Creek with his family (including his four year old son John), and built a mill on the creek by 1789."

You usually "settle in" an area. Besides, should you call it by name if Caleb is supposed to be second possible source of the name as suggested in the first paragraph of the section? Also, I can't quite imagine a mill built on a creek. They float like a bunch of rocks :) Could you clarify how this paragraph about Caleb links to the previous one?

Also, perhaps you should say "two etymologies have been suggested" instead of "are given". - Mgm|(talk) 11:08, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

  • "Settled on" may be proper usage, but for me (non-American) it was confusing so I pointed it out. The connection between the two etymologies should be purely grammatical. You say there's two of them, but you didn't actually state that the story about Caleb is the second one. I expanded Warriors Path State Park which might cause confusion with Warrior's Path State Park in Tennessee and Whipple Dam State Park tonight. I see you have been kept busy with White Deer Hole Creek. It looks really good. I hope it makes FA, but I don't know if I would want to do all that work to make an article FA. Doesn't seem like fun.     • That IUCN page is about as clear as mud, the wiki and the web page. I am not going to worry about it for now, I will continue, to keep the map the same, but I am not going to worry about the IUCN tag. I finished expanding Worlds End State Park. I also made redirects for Whirls End State Park and Whirls Glen State Park. I always thought that it was Whirls Glen until I actually noticed the signs. My Dad still calls it Whirls Glen. Perhaps this could make a DYK? Did you know.... that the official name of Worlds End State Park in Pennsylvania was not "officially" resolved until 1943? It had been known and is still called by some as Whirls Glen State Park or Whirls End State Park? I am not happy with the phrasing of the question perhaps you could tweak it? Supplementing this

You know, for a chemist you write damn good geography articles (and coming from someone with an undergraduate degree in the subject from one of the better departments in the country, I'd like to think that should mean something). You've given me an example to follow for Shawangunk Kill (a similar backwater close to where I live, a tributary of the Wallkill which is in turn a tributary of the Rondout which finally drains into the Hudson).

I'd also like to say that your work on White Deer Hole Creek (and, just to add, that name alone is almost cool enough to justify featured status) has inspired me to, sometime soon, start getting serious about upgrading the article about Slide Mountain (the highest peak in the Catskills) for GA, peer review and a run at featured status.

BTW, speaking of that and looking at the other WikiProjects you're part of, have you considered working on mountain and lake articles for those WikiProjects? I think, based on what you've done with WHDC and Larrys Creek, you could bring the same touch to those subjects. Daniel Case 16:25, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Return of the prodigal

Hello again! Sorry I've been unresponsive for so long. I've been busy in lab and whatnot and have mostly been doing medieval peerage stuff, which is sufficiently rote so as not to require much mental overhead. Congratulations on White Deer Hole Creek. The depth and texture of these creek articles you write absolutely amazes me. I agree with the commenters above: this ought to be a front-page article. (I just double-checked the railroad info, BTW, and it's fine.) I'm sorry I was too late to get my oar in on FAC, but it seems it didn't need it. :) And thank you for those nice historical maps; have you seen http://www.pennpilot.psu.edu yet?

Went gallivanting over the back roads of SoLanCo over Thanksgiving — very back roads. River Road along the Tucquan Creek looks like it must flood anytime more than a quarter-inch of rain comes down. Anyway, got pictures of the high bridge at Martic Forge, which rumor has it is slated for demolition, then parked at the put-in below Safe Harbor dam and took in the high bridge there as well. Lock 6 of the Conestoga Navigation is still in relatively good, if dry, condition nearby. Ranged up through Columbia in time to see a local come down the Columbia Branch from Lancaster hauling steel plate from Mittal Steel in Coatesville, drove past the last remaining structure from Chickies #2 Furnace, and saw the sprawling, mostly-derelict mill complex at Steelton before heading home. Nice industrial-heritage-of-the-Susquehanna tour; must work on Samuel Stehman Haldeman sometime, as his family were owners of several of the Chickies furnaces. I haven't done much Pennsylvania lately, aside from Path Valley Railroad and the half-completed Tuscarora Valley Railroad, plus some work in my userspace. I need to start intercalating railroads into User:Dhaluza's nice mountain and valley articles, though. Anyway, good to touch base again, and all the best to you and your family. Susquehannock

I expanded Mount Pisgah State Park tonight and had more time to kill but not time to get in depth on expanded another article so I added some more info to Susquehannock State Park as well. This will probably need some copy edits. I am not happy with how I wrote the paragraph about the Susquehannock. Thanks for the copy edits on Worlds End and the photo too. Don't look for much work from me until Tuesday. Got a busy weekend ahead of me. Leaf raking, bathroom painting, chimney cap installing, going to a wedding way out of town, hopefully getting some sleep and being thankful to be away from the wee ones (little monsters) until January! I like the emboldening of the tributary names as I find quotation marks used for emphasize to be distracting. Quotations marks are used for quotations, not for rhetorical notice. Latin names cut out, just don't know how to cut down on it being too listy. I could move the agriculture stuff, but where? It doesn't totally fit in with the discussion of farming in the history section. As for the trees, there wasn't forestry as an industry, just incidental plundering of the stock to build houses, barns, firewood.     • I added some to the lead, leaving out a lines about popular culture and etymology. The latter is too odd and disparate to bring into the intro, and the former is just an afterthought to begin with.   • Glad you like it - I already saw Nichalp's message so I left a notice at his(?) talk page. I also just eliminated repetitive names (woodpecker, owl) in a series which makes birds shorter and less list-y. There are probably some inconsistencies between my style and yours - not sure I did all the dates accessed as you did - are you British by chance? I also added some refs on the protected areas and general refs for the animals and hunting. Feel free to supplement or change these too. If you are happy with it and Nichalp is too, you might want to say on the FAC page and the editors' talk pages that you now believe that all issues have been addressed and could they look at it again. Worlds End

Thank you for adding and having the picture to add the the Worlds End State Park article. It was good to see it included on DYK today. Well I am off school for three weeks and my two biggest projects are already completed. The chimney cap is on and the bathroom is finally finished. I expanded Caledonia State Park and Chapman State Park today. I think that Chapman has a possibility for DYK with the Jean Stapleton connection. Perhaps, DYK...that actress Jean Stapleton famous for her role at Edith Bunker on the 70's Tv classic All in the Family performed regularly with summer stock theater at Caledonia State Park in Pennsylvania. Thanks for the fixes on Caledonia. I hope it makes DYK someone with a sense of humor should appreciate it. Edith Bunker is one of the funniest characters on TV ever and the fact that she has a connection to a state park in PA just tickles my funny bone. Expanded Clear Creek State Park today. I think that I will be going in ABC order to expand this rest. Is there somebody working steadily on the State Roads in PA. I think Pennsylvania Route 233 would be a good one. Alright, it's done – several scripts are now included; there's a new button now (after opening up the suggests.) that automatically does both of Bobblewik's scripts at once as well as some other stuff. Edith Bunker

I won't be surprised at all if somebody deletes the picture of Edith from the Caledonia State Park article. Wikipedia isn't the most humorous place on the internet that is for sure. Writing the articles about State Highways doesn't interest me too much either. I was just wondering if you knew off hand of somebody who does them regularly. I will look into it now. Tristate Observer Question

Hi, I am not sure where to put this, as I am new to all this. I did not see an edit button on my talk page. We are a newspaper in Pike county, pa and I see some outside groups with links and I do feel what we cover is very important. Our moto is "News You Should Know" I would like our paper to appear as a resource for folks looking into Pike and the towns herein. If y ou don't mind I would appreciate a responce on my talk page. As a news site, we cover many articles, not just pike county, but as you said, we have State, National, and World news, besides local. Maybe we should be listed in all those catagories?? Since you must follow your rules and not list business nor news resources I will help you by placing important infractions here on your page.

In order to follow your rules, as you remove my news resource, please also remove the Pike Chamber of Commerce, hence the word Commerce, meaning business, meaning business development. Also, please visit Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania and remove most of the COTA info under happenings as these are direct links to businesses or artists trying to sell their art, hence business. I removed the commercial link from this page which I see you have reverted. There is no unique detailed information as this reference refers to. Only a commercial page selling apple trees. My thoughts are a better non-commercial reference should be found for this article and this one removed. What you reverted only supports other come to wikipedia and spamming with commercial links. Auto peer review

I tried by-passing the cache, quitting Safari, and reloading the template to the monobook, but no joy. The 'peer review' button still appears at the right of the edit page, but clicking on it does not seem to achieve anything. Andy is on a wiki-break. I used it twice a few weeks ago, but not since. Am I missing a step out somewhere? Thanks for offering to do it. I am after one for Flannan Isles which could be pasted here - but no worries if you can't find the time. Featured List?

  • I submitted it to DYK. Is there such thing a "Featured Lists" on wikipedia? Do you think that once the PA state park articles are completed that they could be a featured list? Dincher 05:14, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
  • I looked at this list List of areas in the National Park System of the United States. It seems to be most like the List of Pennsylvania State Parks, Towns of Alberta is more like it in size. Next I briefly skimmed over some of the included articles. Some are pretty brief and others are more detailed. So I guess we don't really have to worry about all the articles being complete. I agree that county and size should be included. I can think of nothing else important or all inclusive. I had thought about "year established" but the year establised on some of them is pretty iffy. I think that the introductory paragraph needs to be dressed up and that we should included a map of PA with all the state parks plotted and labeled on it. What do you think?     • The map for the National Parks links to the article for each park. I have no idea how to make it but it is really cool. The map for Alberta seems to be too busy. I did finish Greenwood Furnace State Park today and put some finishing touches on Hillman State Park. It is largely undeveloped, basically a glorified state game land. I was thinking about making a bigger map with smaller dots for this project of ours. I am glad you did it. Thanks for answering the dot question. You sure bit off a big project, but I think it is going to be worth it. I expanded three parks today, lets see if I can remember them, I just did Jennings Environmental Education Center and Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. The other one is, now I have to think about it, I could look but that would be cheating, Erie Bluffs State Park that took awhile. It has been a busy day. Bill Cowher resigned from the Pittsburgh Steelers and my wife applied to Fayetteville State University. That was a nice surprise! And I got called into work, which is good for wikipedia, otherwise I would be firmly planted in my Lazy-Boy Anyway have fun with the dots! There is no doubt that the Penn State job is better, but I think that Joe Paterno must be immortal. So I am going to have to stick with the Steelers. I will find time for wikipedia. I can do it on the weeks we play the Cleveland Browns. I added maps for Memorial Lake State Park and McConnells Mill State Park. That should help a little. Replying to your last message? What kind of reference do you mean? I agree with the county or counties. I haven't found the area for all of them, not even on PADCNR's page. This will take additional research. Streams and lakes is good too. I am just not sure what kind of reference you mean. Do you mean a little blurb about each park or a reference to an external source? Thanks for the medal! That one is pretty cool. I played around some on your frog page. I like the system so far. The refs, are a good idea, shouldn't be any questions about the accuracy of our work. Yet more state parks and a lake monster

I finished up Prince Gallitzin State Park and expanded Shawnee State Park tonight. The original article about Shawnee includes a reference to "Shawn" the lake monster. I did a bit of research on it and didn't find anything although I did find some really cool pictures of the "Haunted" Lake Shawnee amusement park in West Virginia, see them here [2]. I don't want to delete the ref to the lake monster, but can't supoort it. I guess I will go some more research on it. Remember you can't hunt groundhogs in PA state parks. I see that Paulins Kill made featured article. Congrats. I am pretty sure that you worked hard to get it there. The state park map looks great. I can look at it and ID most of the parks by the dot without looking at the info. I have really learned alot by doing this. I just expanded McConnells Mill State Park. I am thinking that someday soon Slippery Rock Creek is going to catch your eye. The PA DCNR website on McConells Mill has the info on how Slippery Rock got its name. I chose not to include it, but definetly think that it fits into all the Slippery Rock articles. As for "Shawn" at Shawnee State Park, that bit of info was added in the very first version by an unregistered user. It does not look like vandalism. Somebody knows something. Your concerns about the WPUI stuff are pretty valid. There are lots of iffy images on wiki. I think that for our state parks to be featured, we need to avoid that type of stuff. The Nearby State Parks question is something I wanted to ask too. I think we should have a consistent rule. Maybe all parks within a certain radius? 30 miles or so? I am glad that you like the woodchuck. Perhaps the groundhog could become sort of a mascot for our List. I nice and respectful and apparently serious picture of the little critter could be featured prominently on the list page when it is ready for Featured Status. I added him to my user page too.   • Answers. I think that we should include state parks from other states if they are within the 30 mile radius. For the parks that don't have any within the 30 miles I think one or two closest will be good too. I think I am going to take my PA/NJ AAA issued map off the wall and make a circle with a 60 mile diameter and place the center on the park and go from there. My computer at home is too slow to be going back and forth looking up the coordinates and typing them in and so on. Maybe the circle idea will work. If my cat leaves me alone. She is a pencil freak! I expanded French Creek State Park tonight. That is way better than watching Law and Order. I added some more to the frog too. I'm tellin' ya, the list is gonna look good when it is done. Is it just me or is checking the distance for the nearby state parks a pain in the rump? It would be easy on a real map with a real compass. I don't have a compass.
