Re: Gervonta Davis

Greetings. Mainstream media has referred to Davis as a three-weight champion: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. However, because of the WBA's Super/Regular title mess, there is dissent and rightly so: [6]. What we cannot do is change the terminology on Davis's page without first discussing the matter extensively at WikiProject Boxing.

There has been prior discussion, even somewhat recently, but nothing conclusive. Such discussion would need to be revisited in order for Davis's article, including many others, to be changed. Main stream media refers to Davis as 3 weight champ, because of Floyd and PBC's promotional work. But the main thing is that Davis never fought WBA(super) super-featherweight champion Alberto Machado, he never fought WBA(super) lightweight champion Devin Haney, And he never fought WBA(Super) super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor. It does matter what the WBA says, because they're the primary source on their own title. WBA rankings from June 2013, post-Kessler rematch, labelling Froch as "Unified" champion—not "World" (Regular) champion. Likewise WBA rankings from June 2014, post-Groves rematch, still labelling him as "Unified" champion. We have to go by their terminology or else we're not being factually accurate. Revisiting this a month later because of edits like these: [7], [8]. I've already linked you to the WBA site above, where PDFs listing the exact terminology of the belts at the time (Super, Regular/World, Unified, etc.) can be viewed. Your stance that the WBA shouldn't be taken seriously is a bit myopic, considering we're here to build an encyclopaedia. I know that. But canelo is wba regular, which is why he fought floyd who is the wba super champion. Title consolidation. And whole point of wba listing wba regular champ as unified is that they will fight the super champion. Canelo and inoue both did that. In a WBA title consolidation, the lower title is essentially vacated the moment the bell rings. Therefore, Álvarez did not bring his lower-tier Unified title (previously Regular until he defeated Trout) up against Mayweather; instead he was fighting exclusively for Mayweather's higher-tier Super title. Ultimately, it doesn't need to be stated that Álvarez lost his own WBA title when he was fighting for (and failed to win) Mayweather's WBA title. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 21:27, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
