AWB Troubles

AWB Notification Area Icon

Hi Jeremy, Was just thinking, we could setup AWB to be able to be 'minimised' to the notification area?

Do you think that would be a useful feature, of course, at the users choice.

AWB Bug: %%key%% includes namespace

I've got a fix for that one, ie if "Author:" is in the string, it replaces it with ""

That should solve it i think

Just making sure you knew, the rule is that you don't disambiguate titles unless the namespace is already taken. It was decided a couple months ago. The rule is at WP:TV-NAME. Also, while on the subject of skins edits... the template, which doesn't need to exist might I add. Consider spouse is used to refer to any partner, not just those to whom they are married. Collaboration for plugin

Hi Sam: I'm actually extremely busy now that school has started again (I was on a one-week school break before), so collaboration will be tough. I have a few minutes here and there, and in general I'll be on #autowikibrowser if I'm at home and can spare a few minutes, so if you see me there, then we can talk :-). Plugin configuration

Finally cracked it. Managed to write out our settings, which looked like this:

and read em back in again.

Went at it from a different angle this time... I'm building an XML string using my old settings-savings code, and then having AWB serialize that string. For reading, it's just the reverse: AWB sends us a string, which we convert to an XMLReader. Best of all, no other changes are required because we're still using the old way of doing it behind the scenes, and we can add and remove parameters without breaking any objects :)

I'll finish off testing it tomorrow and making sure it's robust but basically I'm 99% sure I've cracked it. --kingboyk 00:01, 2 March 2007 (UTC) PS Probably would work without the changes I made to AWB, but those might be handy for somebody if they want to write a serializable class in future and have AWB save that to settings.

One other thing to look at is the conversion of old settings files. AWB converts those, but I don't think it sends anything to the plugin. That might be a bit of a pain in the arse for folks who have complicated settings files e.g. defining generic templates. --kingboyk 00:07, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Schools

I note you have added the article on Bourne Grammar School into WikiProject Schools. A noble objective in theory, but I suspect something of a forlorn hope. You need look no further than the articles about secondary schools in Lincolnshire to see what I mean, quality ranges from adequate to appalling seemingly with little prospect of raising the quality to a consistent and acceptable standard. It really needs big input from the schools: they know themselves best. I contacted BGS to suggest they adopt the article as an IT project for the kids, but they did not take up the suggestion. As I see it, people looking for info about most things do a Google search, and Wikipedia articles always come close to the top of the list, and therefore a good Wikipedia article about a school would be as good as an alternative prospectus and much more accessible. Also, these articles are a popular target for vandalism, bored kids who have nothing better to do in IT lessons - I gather that BGS has severely limited access to Wikipedia from the IT suite.

One little problem for you to solve: do you know how to fix Infobox_UKschool so that it lines up with columns left and right as an Infobox should? I suspect it is no more than a line of text missing from the template. There are alternative school infoboxes, but this is the best one for selective secondary schools in the UK, it has all the necessary headings, none missing and no inapplicable extras. :-) Guy 18:24, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Also, what do you think about integrating wikidiff2 into AWB? (See [2]) It's the code that generates the diffs. The only problem is that it's written in c++, not c#. Can we "translate" it with that site you told me about to translate the custom module code? That would allow us to generate the diffs locally, saving time for users when using AWB and saving resources. The ReplaceSpecial.cs error is my fault. I simplified some code i did, but didnt check it compiled. Commited so it compiles now!!. The 2nd error, im not sure... I usually just delete files like that and reupdate if i get errors like that....

Mainly cause if you're working on a slow connection, the extra page load to view the diff wastes a lot of time. It's faster to have it rendered locally on any connection, for that matter. AWB help

Hi. I have just downloaded AWB and am a 'checked-user' so all should be fine, except it keeps crashing for no reason. I'm running XP and although I use firefox, I've logged in through IE. Crashes are either immediate or at any time. I have made some edits with it which have worked fine, then while processing a list, it will 'need to close'. I don't think this is due to the settings as sometimes it won't get that far. Hvae you any ideas?

WP Israel Bot Tagging

Hi Reedy Boy, The project I am currently working on is tagging all articles (talk pages) in the category Israel and all subcategories with the WikiProject Israel template. {{WikiProject Israel}}. Reedy Boy, my suggestion is do not include sub categories automatically. That is what messes up the tagging. Let the project validate each individual category before you tag articles in it. That way there will be far lesser false positives — Lost^(talk) 22:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

It's got nothing to do with consensus, and everything to do with accurate list building (per Lostintherush). I was asked to do Category:Israel, and subcategories. The sub categories i presume are accounting for most of the bad edits. It was done as per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Israel#Scope.

So yeah, i'll agree, its my fault, i sorta nievely (sp?) assumed that if it was a subcategory of the main cateogry, it needed to be tagged.. Which TBH, makes sense to me - As if its in a sub category, surely, the majority are related?. The was no intention to tag articles that weren't needed.

I will for future, make sure like Lostintherush suggested, - User_talk:Reedy_Bot#Bot_account_blocked, just do it on a category by category basis, based on what is approved.

However, its my fault whichever way, and for which, i apologise

I think undoing all the bot edits for that period is a little extreme, as there over a thousand, and many are relevant (Its not like the majority are incorrectly tagged...?). The articles are due to be assessed (by the requestor of the the tagging), so they would be cleared up then when they were tagged, so inappropriates would be removed then. However, i could make a start going over some of the edits, looking for ones that are mistags, of course, this isnt going to be a quick or simple task. Its strange that in subcategories of the root Category:Israel, there are so many that seem to be incorrectly categorised...?

I have a bot (User:WatchlistBot) which also does tagging. The way I do it, which seems to work pretty well, is that I tag the categories first, interactively. That is, I say y/n for each category (with keywords, like "Isreal" in this case, that if they appear the category name, the category is tagged without checking). This way, I can go all the way down the category hierarchy and find basically all relevant categories. If I'm not sure about a category, I skip it and ask the project (much easier to tag something later than to untag it). Then, I can let the bot loose to tag all articles in all tagged categories. There are still occasional mistags, but it is very rare. I use pywikipedia, and my source is linked from the bot's page. Feel free to copy whatever might work for you. If it was me, I'd go ahead and rollback the changes, then retag as appropriate. Even though it will undo a lot of good edits, those won't be hard to redo, and it upsets people when pages are incorrectly tagged (I imagine especially with a political topic). It sure was. But it was worth it because I got to add a lot of newly-created entries to my watchlist (now at 18,350 from 18,030) that I would have otherwise missed. Mind you, I rollbacked most of everything blindly (later glancing revealed that this included rollbacking or deleting the talk pages of tens of Israel-related entires that I, myself, authored!). There's some quite bad categorisation there. I've gone as deep as I dare with Category:Israeli people by occupation; starting to find some questionable subcats now. Hi ... I'm relatively new to regular expressions and am trying to find, for example, this

ASIN: B0007J0TPU.

and replace, yielding this

ASIN B0007J0TPU.

I've figured out how to do this in 2 passes:

Pass 1 Find: (\bASIN:)\s

Pass 1 Replace: {{ASIN|

Pass 2 Find: \b{{ASIN|([A-Z0-9]{10,10})\b

Pass 2 Replace: $1}}

As a quick thought, it may be easy to do something for you with the module maker... Im not really a Regex whizz, its really just the basic things that i do. Using the module maker, you can do it in VB or c#, and use like Regex.Replace("(\bASIN:)\s", "{{ASIN|")

Or something, i'll have to have a play at home. Got some articles i can use to test it out on.

Yes, I've tried to use the normal flavor of Find and Replace, with the first row for the first pass above, the second row for the second pass above. It seems, though, that the rows are meant to be independent, not aggregate. It is not entirely clear to me yet what the multiline and singleline options accomplish. I'm not sure ASINs should be used anyway. There was a big discussion about using Amazon as a source on one of the admin noticeboards recently. Also, there's an advanced find/replace feature in AWB somewhere (written by Ligulem if memory serves), which uses regexes and rules. I haven't used it for a long time as I put the regexes I need into my AWB plugin. Thank you both! I'll look into your suggestions. I certainly would not be adding any ASINs. Just redisplaying ones that already exist. Plus, before converting to an ASIN that displays, I'd check to see if there was an ISBN or OCLC available. I'm pretty aware of the controversy regarding ASINs, and personally prefer to only use them as a last resort. There are times when neither an ISBN nor an OCLC exists, but an ASIN does ... and then, maybe only for an ASIN on Amazon's UK site, not their US site. AWB.sln

I'll ask you this here in case I forget later or am not around.

How should the new plugin project, or AWB.sln, be configured to have the plugin get compiled and added to the AWB bin\Debug folder when running AWB in debug mode? The other binaries seem to get debug-compiled to that folder but not the new plugin.

On a similar note, maybe we could set up a mirror AWB.sln in the kingbotk plugin folder, and add the kingbotk plugin project to that solution for easier debugging. Currently I "run" the plugin in debug mode and copy the created DLLs to the AWB bin\debug folder, then run AWB in debug mode. There has to be an easier way. --kingboyk 15:23, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Just because this seems to be related: when I open AWB I get an error message "The application for project 'C:\Program Files\AWB\Plugins\WPAssessmentsCatCreator\WPAssessmentsCatCreator\WPAssessmentsCatCreator.vbprj' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type (.vbproj) is installed". If this because I don't have vb.net installed on my computer or did you forgot to do something? For the bug list and the request list, well, more for the request, we do them as we want, or unless there is something mutually agreed that needs doing. I've got a request on there that i just cant really be bothered doing, so its sitting there! Not all of the devs can do all of the things, so we do stuff as and when we want, it works pretty well, just deoes mean some stay for quite a while. Ah well... It's allowed; BAG doesn't regulate manually approved edits, and I used MetsBot for my AWB contributions instead of cluttering my main account contribs. What went wrong?

I can only presume that it is one of the occasional blanking edits that appear with the media wiki software. Sometimes these occur and dont save properly, ending in the page being blanked, usually when the DB is having a few issues. Reedy Boy 08:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Couple of AWB observations/queries

Hi again Reedy Boy,
Am posting this here in case it's limited to my computer or something I've overlooked:

The latest AWB version takes a few seconds to load – because, I guess, it's accessing the internet – and sometimes appears to've crashed; perhaps the next version could show an "Initialising; please wait..." box during this time and then open the main window...? (Do you/have you used Spybot - Search & Destroy...? If so, something like its startup.)
Saved settings don't include the list of pages to process (at whatever state it was in when the settings were saved), something I think it did previously... If I'm not imagining this, any chance the option to save the list as part of the settings might be (re)included...? (I realize the list may be saved separately, but don't find that as convenient.)

We can do that. It was mentioned by a user that its annoying finding out if the version is disabled when you start trying to work, as such, it does this on startup aswell now. Added - rev 1902
For this one, you are indeed correct, it used to. We decided it would be useful to give the option to the user whether to do this, as such, i think we must have defaulted it to false... Go to General --> User and project preferences. There is an option "Save article list on saving settings". I know this works, as i've been sent lists including saved articles recently. It would onlt be a case of you doing this one, and saving it on your default, then as long as you dont reset settings, it will always do it, even if you save to new settings files.

Thanks for the above, Reedy Boy; I've just been using AWB again and have already benefitted from the autosave feature! Combined with the "Save text to file" menu option, I should remain a happier bunny.

You revised my work as I was editing, However I would also argue that the ways Dada is described section is in no way helpful to understanding Dada and in fact should be removed. The pertanant quotes from Tristan Tzaraare already included other places in the article. The quote as it is with no other context is way to long and confusing. The second quote says tells a reader nothing in the context it is in. This is a major problem with Wikipedia right now people add things but if someone removes something to make thearticle have a better flow and be easier to understand it's considered vandalism. My best advice is make sure you use edit summaries - When people leave no summary and then just remove sections, it seems most likely like vandalism. Then it is less likely to be taken as vandalism. Let me just expand on this a little. If you're deleting a recreation of a previously speedy deleted article and the content is roughly the same, you can redelete using the same rationale as last time. I personally often use "recreation" as the reason but you'd better not since you've been told not to ;) It's also important to look at how often the article has been recreated and who by. Is one person repeatedly recreating a piece of total crap? If so, warn them. Or is it being recreated by more than one person with some possibility that the speedy deletion was incorrect? Send it to AFD.

Prod deletions are the "softest" we have. Anybody can challenge a prod, any admin can undelete a prodded article, and anyone can recreated a prodded article. If that happens and you think it should still be deleted, send it to AFD.

You must remember when trawling through the CSD categories that many people tag articles for speedy deletion with incorrect rationale, and they tag articles which are quite simply not suitable candidates for speedy deletion. You have to be willing to decline speedy deletion requests: remove the tag, state in your edit summary why you're declining, and optionally send to AFD. --kingboyk 12:49, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

What text went with it? Are you sure someone just didn't vandalize it? Also, there are few botany editors, and our plant sexuality articles are one area where Wikipedia has low contributions, and we have few people doing the categorizing, but this doesn't mean useful and appropriate categories should be deleted. As I'm not an administrator I can't judge what was wrong, and whether it met the criteria for speedy deletion, so please elaborate on what was wrong with the text that went with it. Also, is that a criteria for speedy deletion of a category, that there's only one page in it, particularly if there are many other pages that should and could be appropriately categorized there? Our one categorizer in botany was quite a problematic editor in other ways, and has not been replaced, so we are way behind in categorizing, but I don't want to have to re-create categories that should not have been deleted. Was this the original text, though, ie, this was it's entire history? This is what was originally created? I've gone through this before were an admin speedy deletes an article based on a revision that's vandalism. I don't like creating categories, it takes me forever to and it's one of those areas of Wikipedia where new editors don't tred easily--so, it's pretty unusual to have vandal-created category, and it WAS NOT EMPTY, and, again, there are FEW botany editors, and we really don't need to have the little work done on botany on Wikipedia, to be undone by overeager deletionist admins. How is Template:South Asian television channels patent nonsense?

I'm very confused as to why this template was deleted as patent nonsense? There was absolutely nothing about this template that was "nonsense". The last time I viewed it, it was a legitimate, organized, and useful template. It may need some improvement, but it was far from anything I would consider nonsense. It is it possible to restore the template? What was patent nonsense about Rexella Stupid Art Collective?

YOU DELETED ME!!!! I WASN'T FINISHED. THE GROUP IS REAL,I wasn't finished with that article, in fact I had just begun and was in the process of researching more material. Besides CSD G1 clearly says this 1. Patent nonsense and gibberish, an unsalvageably incoherent page with no meaningful content. This does not include: poor writing, partisan screeds, obscene remarks, vandalism, fictional material, material not in English, badly translated material, implausible theories, or hoaxes.

This is a real group, and have been active for 7.5 years. They are a Youth subculture-art movement located in Portland, Oregon, USA. Stupid art is a small art movement they are involved with, in it are elements of absurdest performance art, abstractionist visual art, and surrealist music(think like no-wave, noise rock/punk, and elements of early industrial). The Rexella Stupid Art Collective has played several shows around the NW USA, and has had 4 art showings in Portland, they have also been the subject of a Youth Subculture group study at Portland State University for their Sociology department. You can find them on the web at www.rexella.org I demand my article back so that I may finish it. What was stated in the intro can be changed( though this is their offical bio and they have never deviated from it), I would rather have proper coaching than have my article deleted, and if your response to that is "it is clearly stated here in rule XXX", well sorry I don't have the time and money to sit at a computer all day and live Wikipedia.

Yea - Wikipedia is taking over my life, lol. Hey, I'm trying to do some research on bots. I was thinking of trying to make something to convert all the old airport infoboxes to the new one {{Infobox Airport}}. I haven't used AWB yet, but can I just use this to create a semi-automated process of changing these over? I'm not experienced with bots yet, so thought I'd see if you knew anything about them. Hmm... You could i suppose... If you got your regex's correct. A custom application could possible be written, you would just need to pull out the relevant data, and stick it back in a again in the new places... Somethings, are just best done by hand. Non-North American airports

Just wanted to let you know that for some strage reason (I suspect that it's listed in ICAO somplace) but nearly all non-North American airports have the elevation in feet. If you go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Airports#Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) you can then go to the UK AIS or EuroControl and look at the aerodrome charts. Both sites require registration but it's free and in over a year other than the original email I have received nothing from them. By the way I was able to do all the Canadian airports (1000+) using AWB. I used a combination of regex and search and replace, it's faster than by hand but very easy to make errors. When you use the "metric-elev = yes" it list the aerodrome height as metres/feet but to be correct it should be feet/metres. It's very odd because almost all of Europe list the height in feet and some countries don't list the heights in meters at all on the charts. As to using AWB, I'm not so good with the regex so it didn't work as well as it should but it was a lot quicker than doing them manually. The big problem was dealing with multiple runways. They all came back as r1- and had to be changed but as it's just a single digit it wasn't too bad. The other problem is that it becomes hard if someone has done the lines as "ICAO=EGNM|" but in another article someone else has done "|ICAO=EGNM" followed by another article with "ICAO = EGNM |", you get the point. Basically I would do some and then stop and add another search and replace. I save the xml and just put them at User:CambridgeBayWeather/Airports with no infobox 01 and User:CambridgeBayWeather/Airports with no infobox 01. I used the nowiki there to stop the error messages on the page but it's viewable after you click "edit". There's some odd things as I was trying to turn numbers in the article from 8.45 to 8.5 etc and there is the template as well. It works but I really had to pay attention to the articles. Cheers. I have been using it constantly for a couple of days now and can find no errors in it at all. However now I have said that I probably will as soon as finishing this entry. Great work. All I would say is that the new logging approach needs to be clearly documented and announced. I noticed some minor stuff and a major one. Minor first, in the old infobox the town served was automatically linked, the new one doesn't do that and it must be done manually. I noticed that with Adisucipto International Airport the "coor dm" didn't update but I suspect that's because it was looking for "coor dms". Now here is what looks like the major problem. Check the operator, city-served, elevation-f and elevation-m. I noticed it on some but as yet I'm not sure how many. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:04, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

The location and city served does not auto-link so that complex linking can be used. IE: [[Daytona Beach, Florida|Daytona Beach]], [[Florida]]. Ok, for the de-linking/differently linking of wikilinks, i did mention to check User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin for known issues. There is the problem with both the regex's i have used, that | is usually the end of the parameter, so blocks that out. The solution for me, has been to manually close links, and copy from the diff engine. I did notice the copy (on right click) of the svn version doesnt work from the diff browser. I think that could do with being changed.

So, as you 2 have discussed, the plugin should not automatically wikilink anything, the user can/should do that.

The coor dm not going to coord, is precisely that reason, it is looking for coor dms, i can add coor dm to the list of changes.

The idea of the plugin wasnt to do absolutely do everything automatically, just speeden up the migration process.

Some of those edits i think, are with 'old' versions of the plugin, where i have fixed and updated stuff later.

I shall do some more edits today, and see what problems arise there.

I came across this edit as of 09:20, 27 July 2007 to Ajaccio - Campo dell'Oro Airport done with the User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin where it did not pick up the runway data when migrating to the new infobox. This one apparently slipped through the cracks since the runway data is still missing from the article (I just now restored it). Sure, sounds good to me. I haven't been around, but I'll assume that most of the bugs have been sorted out. I'd go ahead a release it but not make the update mandatory and also include a message that warns against running unassisted bots with the new version in case of undiscovered bugs. We should also make the official title "4.0.0.0 Beta" to make it clear. But how can we indicate the beta in the [assembly: AssemblyVersion("VERSIONHERE")] structure which only takes numbers? —METS501 (talk) 19:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

AWB bug or settings file?

Hi, I saw your comment re the relisted AWB bug I found:

I know for a fact i've fixed this. Ive done quite a few edits with the latest version (see my contribs) and NONE of these have been added to my watchlist... :confused:

It may just be an old settings file.. See if anyone else confirms the bug...

I'm definitely still having problems, the "Add all to watchlist" option is unchecked but everything goes onto my watchlist, I have to remove them all manually.

I was wondering what you meant by "an old settings file" - if you can suggest what I should try to do at my end, then that'd be helpful, if we find something that works then one of us can add a follow-on comment to the bug report. I'm happy to perform any testing that would be helpful in resolving this (having worked as a programmer in the past, I know something of the joys of testing - but I'm too rusty to try delving into the AWB code myself). In case it makes a difference:

I installed 4.0 beta on top of 3910, i.e. I didn't remove/delete 3910 first. Would that make a difference?
My monobook.js only contains importScript('User:Lupin/popups.js');
- However, I have Active Scripting disabled in IE6, which I saw recommended somewhere as a performance boost for AWB when using popups. As I use Firefox for pretty much all browsing, this doesn't affect anything else.
My monobook.css is empty.

Well, when the bug was originally reported, i was able to find the bug, and fixing it solved it. Im wondering, regarding the old settings file, it has a setting, that is loaded and not shown. Could you try using a new settings file, and see if that solves it. If it does, we should be able to change the old file, if it doesnt solve the problem, it definately needs more looking into. I cant see it being a problem really...

Can you check your settings file for override watchlist setting - <OverrideWatchlist>false</OverrideWatchlist>, maybe set to true, depending. Also, look at Special:Preferences, the watchlist tab

Add pages I move to my watchlist
Add pages I delete to my watchlist

Ahhh, found what the answer was - configuration problem, in General/User and Project Preferences, the checkbox "Allow AWB to override watchlist settings" was cleared which resulted in <OverrideWatchlist> being false, and hence AWB ignoring the setting of the "Add all to Watchlist" (<Watch> in the settings file) - in which case the default from Special:Preferences applies. Once I fixed the override setting, I retested and it works as expected.

So yes, you did fix the programming bug before. I guess I'd class this as a useability bug though - if <OverrideWatchlist> is false, then the "Add all to Watchlist" (<Watch>) option should be greyed out and unselectable as it is being ignored - particularly as <OverrideWatchlist> is false by default, so it is not obvious to the user that they have to do anything to enable the "Add all to Watchlist" setting to be used.

Thanks for your help, if you hadn't mentioned the settings file and the existence of the <OverrideWatchlist> setting (and realising that it wasn't being changed when I toggled "Add all to Watchlist" - which enabled me to find what was being changed), then I probably wouldn't have found an answer myself. I'm guessing youve installed AWB (as you approve users). I have been recently approved and downloaded AWB onto my Windows 2000 machine. I have opened IE and read the guidance, but I'm getting missing DLL messages. That would be cool - but would definatly need some documentation on what to do after all the automatic things are done. Because each one needs to be manually checked and in all cases, minor changes need to be made. For example, the cities have to be wikilinked. Also - for Sam: there is a bug with some articles - it doesn't copy the values to the right parameters. The location is in the type, the owner is in the location, the elev-f is in the location, and the elev-m is in elev-f, or something to that effect. Let me know if you need an example if you can find one yourself, as I know it's been happeneing quite frequently, at least with US airports. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 18:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Another note - I noticed that the city normally goes to the city-served param. It was my understanding that location is to be used by default and that city-served be used only if the city served is different then the location. Would you be able to switch it? Unless you have different thoughts on it. Also - can it add [[ ]] to the city as well? Other small notes, if possible, make the first instance of Asphalt and Concrete wikilinked. And even better, de-wikilink later instances. If any of this can't be done, that's fine. Just wondering. Helipad was a simple mistake, thats now fixed. Also changed city served/location around. Wikilinks can be added. It may not create properly disambiguated links... But.. If CambridgeBayWeather agrees aswell, i'll change that. The duplicate wikilinks, that should be doable. Ie they are the same, and the first isnt wikilinked, wikilink the first, etc

And the idea about collaberation of the month. Good idea, when we get a few more bugs fixed, it would clear the backlog fairly quickly!! Reedy Boy 23:15, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

At the moment, I'm running XP SP2, latest patches but I have access to pretty much every OS since the good old Windows 3.11 for Workgroup days (I do a lot of work with VMs). I think I should have Visual Studio somewhere, albeit I'm more of a Unix/networking guy. The strange thing is, it does look it's working some of the time. At first, I thought it had something to do with the "suppress 'using AWB' in edit summary" option but that wasn't it. And it doesn't have anything to with comments either, apparently (I just tested that including different line break configurations and excessively long comments). I noticed that there's a 'CFD plugin disabled' pop up that comes up (seemingly) at random and I have no clue what's causing it. Re: AWB Bug: Focus lost on loading article

Thanks for following up on this issue. I think that the focus should be wherever the user sets it i.e. the user may set the focus to the category box, find box, edit box etc. while a page / pages are loading and after a page loads the focus should be where the user left it. If that's too difficult to implement, then the Save button would be a good place to focus I think, or maybe the top of the edit box if the edit box is currently displayed (rather than one of the log options). AWB generate from logs

I meant that in the delete log Special:Log/delete, it gets the names of the users who deleted the page, and not the page that was deleted. In the generate from log, there should be two options, one to get the users that performed the action, and one to get the page it was performed on. I would recommend keeping the special pages thing the same, but adding Log (user) and Log (page). The only issue is on the user rights log, the user is either the account being created or the user creating a new account, on that log it would have to put the value of user into page if page isnt there. You must have done something to process the article about Gilbert. When I read the item, I wished the author had listed the novels by title--is there some way to communicate with the contributor, suggesting he/she add this list info? What are your thoughts on how to proceed? Meegs has not commented on the article in a few days and while I respect his opinion; there doesn't seem to be anything that overrides WP:D in it. Most people who speak english (i'm not saying just native speakers - but anyone) refer to "soccer" as "football". We've identified more problematic articles (canadian football) - so i think they could be left out. Your bot and the Basel airport article

Your bot User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin recently updated the article on Basel Airport. In doing so it got rid of the entry:
nativename2 = Aéroport international Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg

This airport belongs to two countries (as explained in the article), which speak two different languages, and therefore has two different names. I have edited the box to include both names:
"Flughafen Basel-Mülhausen-Freiburg" and "Aéroport Bâle-Mulhouse-Freiburg".

Do you realize that you "speedy approved" a bot request to mass edit every bio article with an infobox? That's gotta be what? 10,000? 100,000 articles? Who knows. Anyway, it looks like a good percentage of those are somewhat screwed up now. I tell you I'm pretty tired of Smackbot/Rick Farmbrough's edit-now-fix-later philosophy. Sorry I couldn't paste that in earlier, but I was writing to you from my cell phone. Obviously, this bot request was not trivial and should have garnered more community input, IMO. And yes, I posted a notice to Smackbot's talk page (after using the emergency shut off). He apparently fixed the problem I brought to his attention, but did not respond to my broader query concerning the usefulness of the mass edit. AWB Request

I'm one of those darn under-500 mainspace edit folks, mainly because my work here is very specialized - I work with locator maps for US cities and towns. I recently uploaded newer versions of my maps for Massachusetts that now include an outline of the county they reside in along with just the outline of the town (see Easthampton, Massachusetts for an example). So now I have to go through all 351 Massachusetts town infoboxes and update the 'Location of XXX in Massachusetts' text to 'Location of XXX in YYY County in Massachusetts.' I'd rather not have to do that all by hand. :) My next project is to upload similar maps for Connecticut towns, which will involve 169 nearly-identical links to the recently uploaded Commons file. I also recently got a bot on Commons to help with the batches of maps I'm going to upload.

Sorry I wrote the message to someone else, see User_talk:Pixi, but maybe you can help me too.

Yes, I have the files "Wikidiff2.dll" and "WikiFunctions.dll" in the AWB folder. The problem starts when I migrate to windows vista (ultimate 64-bit edition). Before this I used Windows XP (32-bit), there was not such a problem when using AWB (I used many versions of this soft). Let me describe the problem in a few words: the soft starts ok, I select ro.wp (I use the soft on the Romanian wikipedia project), I can log in, I can make a list (for example from a category), then when I try to add a word (for example with the function append/prepend text) I press the button "Start the process", I receive the following error The type initializer for 'WikiFunctions.WikiDiff' threw an exception.

The user might well have been informed, but the user in question also let the bot edit way past the 50-edit limit he commited himself to, created a bot that didn't do what he said it would (the bot was authorised to warn uploaders that had omitted or poorly formatted information when uploading images, not to tag these images for speedy deletion) and ignored the huge negative feedback. Until this situation is cleared up, and the various responsibilites assesed, I think it might be better to leave this bot blocked for the moment, especially since the user has not made any request or given any explanation yet. It would also be nice to consult the blocking admin before undoing a block, especially for an account that has basically deleted hundreds of images without permission. Advice on plagiarism?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchikan_International_Airport appears to have much of the history of the airport plagiarised from the airport's website ( http://www.borough.ketchikan.ak.us/airport/airport_history.htm ). Some people may assert that it is free use because it is a government website. What do you think is the correct thing to do?

As a temporary measure, I put the plagiarised text as a block quote and added a citation. If free use is permitted, this is sufficient.

A permanent solution may be to re-write it. WP policy seems to say that plagerised material should be deleted (if it is not free use). What is your advice? Archtransit 17:55, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice. I have finished the revisions. This type of work is simply my effort to improve the wikipedia project, a sort of house cleaning. I think that if one doesn't want to write, it's acceptable simply to read articles. One doesn't have resort to stealing text from other websites. Some days, I just read WP and add little or nothing. new article idea

I saw this article [8] which says

Singapore and the United Kingdom have concluded a landmark Open Skies Agreement (OSA) that effectively removes all restrictions on air services operated by carriers of both countries. ....Under it, SIA can operate as many services as the Singapore-UK market can support. It can also pick up passengers from London's Heathrow Airport and fly them to other cities, including those in the United States. The comprehensive agreement even allows SIA to operate like a domestic carrier in the UK and mount any number of services between UK cities. Similarly, UK carriers will be able to operate any number of services beyond Singapore to any city in the world.

This could be a new start of a potential new article about air transport in Singapore and include how they were denied rights between Australia and the US. Another idea would be to use the above block quoted article as a reference to an article about UK routes, incorporating ideas from the Bermuda II agreement covering US and UK routes. The Singapore angle would be easier since Singapore dates from about 1965 while UK aviation history is much longer.

Too much time on my hands? No, it's too lofty goals! Either of the 2 proposed articles would take too much time to write. My recent contributions have been only a few minor ones per day (usually one fact not noted in an article). I learned my lesson from choosing a difficult article to write. Some articles are much easier to write, like those of defunct airlines. The history of open skies in Singapore would be a very time consuming article to write because of each sentence of the article would come from a different citation and there is no one citation that covers the topic. Success in finding rare fact about Boeing 737!

I knew that the 737-300 was once marketed as a business jet version, the 77-33. I found a citation for it! A significant number of my edits are some unusual fact that most general review articles don't include. I then search for a citation to document the fact. I hope that's adding value to wikipedia.

If one reads an easy to locate review article and then re-phrases it for wikipedia, that builds wikipedia but doesn't add anything to the mankind's knowledge base. If I'm not stupid enough, I hope to recall unusual facts then insert it into wikipedia, an easy to locate reference for mankind. Archtransit 19:32, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Autotagging Liverpool articles

This would be great, and would save me so much time. Is this something only you can do, or anyone? Just to confirm I would want all the talk pages where the articles are in Category:Liverpool F.C. and its subcategories tagged with {{Football|England=yes|Liverpool=yes|importance=|class=}}. Obviously many of the articles will already have the football template on them, some with and some without the parameters, is your bot able to handle this? [11] is a CFD. I am not asking you for a "keep" vote rather do you know of what are the keep and/or notable criteria? There are criteria for what is notable in an article, but how about categories?

Suggestion for Reedy Bot's use in positioning DEFAULTSORT

Due to a technical peculiarity in its programming, DEFAULTSORT is unable to perform its alphabetizing function within discussion page categories unless it is entered below the WikiProject tags/Wikitags. If placed above the tags, DEFAULTSORT is completely ineffective. While adding tags to discussion pages, Reedy Bot has been recently repositioning DEFAULTSORT to the top of those pages and, as a result, negating DEFAULTSORT's function. Request concerning NewPage Watcher

I use NewPage watcher and I thought to myself that a great improvement for the program could be the ability to type in the articles that you want to access and load them that way as well, so that it's not only a newpage watcher, it can also be used to tag articles that aren't quite new but nonetheless need tags. I have noticed that NPW is a great tool for tagging articles for various reasons new or not new. I would also like to suggest a few new buttons for new tags be added as well. Perhaps a "POV" tag. I wanted some input on this. I also noticed that when I load NPW, prior to looging in I can see "Images" and "Prod" tabs. What are these for and why do they disappear after I log in? tagging WPE

Hi, From the look of my watchlist you (or your bot) seem to be tagging lots of Somerset villages with WPE banners & using the Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset assessments - which is appropriate... however, I've previously suggested that rather than doing this for thousands of articles the assessments done by various county projects could just be incorporated into the status box on Wikipedia:WikiProject England without adding more banners. If several banners are needed could they be "nested" as part of your automatic process?— Rod ^talk 20:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

I have made much the same observation on the WPE pages, in respect of WPLondon. County projects are daughter projects of WPE, and so the relationship should be assumed, or a link provided to WPE in the county banner. The proliferation of banners just makes talk pages impossible to use - (say) Aldgate - Architecture, London, England, Chaucer, London Transport. IMHO, it's overkill. Reedy Bot is giving a bad name to England project

I'm guessing that this project supports the tagging of articles with the England banner. I have tried complaining to the bot but it continues to add boxes to articles that are already part of the Derbyshire, Bedfordshire and Somerset projects. Now it may seem nice to see that Project England now has thousands of articles tagged but its not a useful use of time and makes some poor editors talk page a spam template mess. Just remember that Wikiproject UK are going to tag all the England articles... oh and wikiproject Europe ... and Geography ... and English ... and ... Can someone please stop this bot. Does anyone support this bot? (I note it has done useful work in the past and some of its work now may be useful Victuallers 17:30, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Double Tags

What is original research?

Hello. Boeing has a search feature where you can look up orders and deliverys. You can find out how many 737's were built between 1975 and 1980 or how many delivered so far. Say I wanted to find out who ordered the most 737's. By looking it up by that search feature, is that original research? Or just referenced information that isn't in paragraph form? http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm?content=userdefinedselection.cfm&pageid=m15527 As you probably know, WP wants referenced facts, not original research and editor's own theories. I tend to think that using the search function is not original research just used to verify the largest customers. Archtransit 19:25, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind me contacting you specifically for a question about AWB. I was wondering if there is a code that will ignore contractions inside quotation marks. I'm doing a find a and replace to get rid of quotation marks, just to improve it a little with "copy edit" guidelines. 95% of the time or more, I ignore changes inside quote marks, because they are usually direct quotes, or are the episode name. Is there anyway to make it so when it is finding contractions, it ignore contractions inside the quotation marks. thank you, Ctjf83 ^talk 18:15, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
