Orphaned fair use image (Image:Bryan kocis.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bryan kocis.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi, I noticed you were having problems using AWB with a custom project back in November. I'm getting the same error. Did you figure it out? MatthewBurton 22:16, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jeremy, Was just thinking, we could setup AWB to be able to be 'minimised' to the notification area?

Do you think that would be a useful feature, of course, at the users choice.

Sam Reedy Boy 19:43, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

AWB Bug: %%key%% includes namespace

I've got a fix for that one, ie if "Author:" is in the string, it replaces it with ""

That should solve it i think

Its just the other namespaces.... I'll commit it, but im not 100% sure

Any ideas?

Reedy Boy 22:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Just making sure you knew, the rule is that you don't disambiguate titles unless the namespace is already taken. It was decided a couple months ago. The rule is at WP:TV-NAME. Also, while on the subject of skins edits... the template, which doesn't need to exist might I add. Consider spouse is used to refer to any partner, not just those to whom they are married. A good example of this is the Marissa Cooper infobox. ~ZytheTalk to me! 15:41, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, didnt realise about the naming convention, i just thought it was inkeeping with the other articles. No matter, no harm done. Thanks for letting me know. As for the reference to skings edits, and a template, i havent added any templates, so im not so sure what you were meaning regarding that. Cheers Reedy Boy 17:31, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Collaboration for plugin

Hi Sam: I'm actually extremely busy now that school has started again (I was on a one-week school break before), so collaboration will be tough. I have a few minutes here and there, and in general I'll be on #autowikibrowser if I'm at home and can spare a few minutes, so if you see me there, then we can talk :-). Another problem is the time zones; most days, I'll be on after 5:00 PM or so my time, which is 10:00 PM your time. But we'll find a way :-) —METS501 (talk) 20:02, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Reedy Boy, sorry for the delayed reply. Which parameters are you talking about? I will ask some more knowledgeable people from the project to reply to your questions as well — Lost(talk) 06:59, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Reedy Boy, I see what you mean. Can you just take the projects mentioned in the WP India template as final and only create tabs for those? The ones mentioned on the project page and not on the template can be excluded from the plugin. Thanks — Lost(talk) 14:31, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

and read em back in again.

Went at it from a different angle this time... I'm building an XML string using my old settings-savings code, and then having AWB serialize that string. For reading, it's just the reverse: AWB sends us a string, which we convert to an XMLReader. Best of all, no other changes are required because we're still using the old way of doing it behind the scenes, and we can add and remove parameters without breaking any objects :)

I'll finish off testing it tomorrow and making sure it's robust but basically I'm 99% sure I've cracked it. --kingboyk 00:01, 2 March 2007 (UTC) PS Probably would work without the changes I made to AWB, but those might be handy for somebody if they want to write a serializable class in future and have AWB save that to settings.

One other thing to look at is the conversion of old settings files. AWB converts those, but I don't think it sends anything to the plugin. That might be a bit of a pain in the arse for folks who have complicated settings files e.g. defining generic templates. --kingboyk 00:07, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

Also, to eliminate the need to spam the bot talk pages, please add Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard to your watchlist. Future messages which affect bot owners will be posted there. Thank you. --Mets501 04:48, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Schools

I note you have added the article on Bourne Grammar School into WikiProject Schools. A noble objective in theory, but I suspect something of a forlorn hope. You need look no further than the articles about secondary schools in Lincolnshire to see what I mean, quality ranges from adequate to appalling seemingly with little prospect of raising the quality to a consistent and acceptable standard. It really needs big input from the schools: they know themselves best. I contacted BGS to suggest they adopt the article as an IT project for the kids, but they did not take up the suggestion. As I see it, people looking for info about most things do a Google search, and Wikipedia articles always come close to the top of the list, and therefore a good Wikipedia article about a school would be as good as an alternative prospectus and much more accessible. Also, these articles are a popular target for vandalism, bored kids who have nothing better to do in IT lessons - I gather that BGS has severely limited access to Wikipedia from the IT suite.

One little problem for you to solve: do you know how to fix Infobox_UKschool so that it lines up with columns left and right as an Infobox should? I suspect it is no more than a line of text missing from the template. There are alternative school infoboxes, but this is the best one for selective secondary schools in the UK, it has all the necessary headings, none missing and no inapplicable extras.  :-) Guy 18:24, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

AWB

The latest commit doesn't build.

It gets the errors

The name 'temp' does not exist in the current context
ReplaceSpecial.cs
Line 719
Column 17
WikiFunctions

and

The type or namespace name 'IAWBMainForm' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
Main.cs
Line 48
Column 43
AutoWikiBrowser

No idea why.

Also, what do you think about integrating wikidiff2 into AWB? (See [2]) It's the code that generates the diffs. The only problem is that it's written in c++, not c#. Can we "translate" it with that site you told me about to translate the custom module code? That would allow us to generate the diffs locally, saving time for users when using AWB and saving resources. Then we can even eliminate the quick save option from the bots list. —METS501 (talk) 01:02, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

The ReplaceSpecial.cs error is my fault. I simplified some code i did, but didnt check it compiled. Commited so it compiles now!!. The 2nd error, im not sure... I usually just delete files like that and reupdate if i get errors like that....
That program will do a version of C++, so we could. What does MaxSem have to say? Reedy Boy 01:09, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Why do we need it? MaxSem 06:57, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Mainly cause if you're working on a slow connection, the extra page load to view the diff wastes a lot of time. It's faster to have it rendered locally on any connection, for that matter. Also, in a much less significant way, it reduces server load, but that alone wouldn't be a reason to do it. —METS501 (talk) 07:17, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I agree. Apparently, it has not-so-perfect UTF-8 support, so I'd rather port it to C#/.NET. I'll spend next week in SPb and will try to do it, if I have free time. MaxSem 08:08, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

AWB help

Hi. I have just downloaded AWB and am a 'checked-user' so all should be fine, except it keeps crashing for no reason. I'm running XP and although I use firefox, I've logged in through IE. Crashes are either immediate or at any time. I have made some edits with it which have worked fine, then while processing a list, it will 'need to close'. I don't think this is due to the settings as sometimes it won't get that far. Hvae you any ideas?

Thanks,

WP Israel Bot Tagging

Hi Reedy Boy, The project I am currently working on is tagging all articles (talk pages) in the category Israel and all subcategories with the WikiProject Israel template. WikiProject Israel. If you can have your bot add that template, it will show up on our assessment statistics and in the categories for articles needing to be tagged, and we can move on to assessing the articles.

Thanks- --יהושועEric 16:06, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

All of the tags are good. If you want to tag the stubs as such, even better. Thanks for the help in tagging everything. --יהושועEric 20:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Bad Tagging

Hi! These articles appear to describe a North American phenomenon; my understanding is that the equivalent in Isreal is called Masorti Judaism, which has a separate article. Given this geographical limitation, are thse articles appropriate for Wikipedia:WikiProject Israel? Best, --Shirahadasha 20:19, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am just automatically tagging all pages in categories/subcategories of Israel. So there may be a few that are in-appropriate. If this is the case, feel free to remove them. Thanks, Reedy Boy 20:31, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Reedy. Your bot tagged Beirut as part of WikiProject Israel. Beirut is, of course, the captial of Lebanon, not Israel, so I assume this was just a mistagging. — George Saliba [talk] 20:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am just automatically tagging all pages in categories/subcategories of Israel. So there may be a few that are in-appropriate. If this is the case, feel free to remove them. So yeah, its a mis-tagging (as the bot is just doing it manually), sorry for the inconvience. Thanks, Reedy Boy 20:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Another mistagging is English language; I have reverted. Maybe a better approach would have been to have the bot first make a list for manual review. --teb728 21:08, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Removed tagging of Talk:Hiram I. He was a Phoenician king. Biblical yes, Israeli no. --Bejnar 21:37, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

How the h*** did you get Beirut in the Israeli list Sam? (rolls eyes). --kingboyk 22:53, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I see this page has been tagged as part of WikiProject Israel. Jabal ad Duruz is in Syria. What's the reason (is it to do with Greater Israel?) or is it a mistake? Cheers Jasper33 23:51, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

See above. If it's incorrect please remove it. --kingboyk 00:04, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

You've tagged this article as WikiProject Israel, when the subject has no connection with Israel AFAICT. If you're tagging all Jewish-related articles as such, this is definitely not warranted! Pseudomonas 02:42, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

So much better merged, isn't it! El_C 00:56, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Reedy Boy, my suggestion is do not include sub categories automatically. That is what messes up the tagging. Let the project validate each individual category before you tag articles in it. That way there will be far lesser false positives — Lost(talk) 22:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
It's got nothing to do with consensus, and everything to do with accurate list building (per Lostintherush). I'm sure ReedyBoy didn't intend to make any political statements here :) It's a mess up but we all mistakes. I agree with shutting him down as he's gone to bed. --kingboyk 22:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I also left a note at the Bot owners' noticeboard. What drew my attention was Talk:Jewish Autonomous Oblast, but looking at the Contribs, I'm seeing many other potential issues. Thanks again. El_C 22:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I was asked to do Category:Israel, and subcategories. The sub categories i presume are accounting for most of the bad edits. It was done as per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Israel#Scope.
So yeah, i'll agree, its my fault, i sorta nievely (sp?) assumed that if it was a subcategory of the main cateogry, it needed to be tagged.. Which TBH, makes sense to me - As if its in a sub category, surely, the majority are related?. The was no intention to tag articles that weren't needed.
I will for future, make sure like Lostintherush suggested, - User_talk:Reedy_Bot#Bot_account_blocked, just do it on a category by category basis, based on what is approved.
However, its my fault whichever way, and for which, i apologise
Hope this clears up the fault
Reedy Boy 08:26, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
A pain, no? :) I got messages for about a week when User:SatyrBot tagged the articles in the now-non-existent Category:Prince of Asturias Award winners with the WP:Spain banner. <sigh> Live and learn, I guess :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 14:48, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
No problem. Will you be clearing up the mess selectively, or would you like me to rollback everything en mass? El_C 14:53, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
I think undoing all the bot edits for that period is a little extreme, as there over a thousand, and many are relevant (Its not like the majority are incorrectly tagged...?). The articles are due to be assessed (by the requestor of the the tagging), so they would be cleared up then when they were tagged, so inappropriates would be removed then. However, i could make a start going over some of the edits, looking for ones that are mistags, of course, this isnt going to be a quick or simple task. Its strange that in subcategories of the root Category:Israel, there are so many that seem to be incorrectly categorised...?
What would your reccomendation be? Thanks, Reedy Boy 17:55, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
I have a bot (User:WatchlistBot) which also does tagging. The way I do it, which seems to work pretty well, is that I tag the categories first, interactively. That is, I say y/n for each category (with keywords, like "Isreal" in this case, that if they appear the category name, the category is tagged without checking). This way, I can go all the way down the category hierarchy and find basically all relevant categories. If I'm not sure about a category, I skip it and ask the project (much easier to tag something later than to untag it). Then, I can let the bot loose to tag all articles in all tagged categories. There are still occasional mistags, but it is very rare. I use pywikipedia, and my source is linked from the bot's page. Feel free to copy whatever might work for you. If it was me, I'd go ahead and rollback the changes, then retag as appropriate. Even though it will undo a lot of good edits, those won't be hard to redo, and it upsets people when pages are incorrectly tagged (I imagine especially with a political topic). Ingrid 18:34, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

You're good to go

Wow, that took way, way, way longer than I expected. Anyway, feel free to redo with the new categorization scheme at any time. Best wishes, El_C 20:14, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Gosh, did you do that manually? That's heroic if you did. --kingboyk 20:15, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
It sure was. But it was worth it because I got to add a lot of newly-created entries to my watchlist (now at 18,350 from 18,030) that I would have otherwise missed. Mind you, I rollbacked most of everything blindly (later glancing revealed that this included rollbacking or deleting the talk pages of tens of Israel-related entires that I, myself, authored!). All in a day's work. El_C 20:25, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

There's some quite bad categorisation there. I've gone as deep as I dare with Category:Israeli people by occupation; starting to find some questionable subcats now. Probably I will have some false positives but doing it this way (one by one, or taking care when adding subcats) they're kept to a minimum. --kingboyk 14:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I've done Israeli people as far as that subcat I mentioned. After that there's heaps of small categories which I couldn't stomach (and I have another request from WP Bio to do). Up to you if you want to trawl through the rest or consider people done. --kingboyk 13:40, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

multi pass regex in AWB?

Hi ... I'm relatively new to regular expressions and am trying to find, for example, this

ASIN: B0007J0TPU.

and replace, yielding this

ASIN B0007J0TPU.

I've figured out how to do this in 2 passes:

Pass 1 Find: (\bASIN:)\s
Pass 1 Replace: {{ASIN|
Pass 2 Find: \b{{ASIN|([A-Z0-9]{10,10})\b
Pass 2 Replace: $1}}

Is a 2 pass regex possible in AWB? Or can you show me how to combine this to one pass? Thanks! Keesiewonder talk 02:14, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

As a quick thought, it may be easy to do something for you with the module maker... Im not really a Regex whizz, its really just the basic things that i do. Using the module maker, you can do it in VB or c#, and use like Regex.Replace("(\bASIN:)\s", "{{ASIN|")
Or something, i'll have to have a play at home. Got some articles i can use to test it out on.
Are you using the Find and Replace Method or something?

Reedy Boy 11:55, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I've tried to use the normal flavor of Find and Replace, with the first row for the first pass above, the second row for the second pass above. It seems, though, that the rows are meant to be independent, not aggregate. It is not entirely clear to me yet what the multiline and singleline options accomplish. I will also look at the Advanced Find and Replace ... Keesiewonder talk 22:41, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure ASINs should be used anyway. There was a big discussion about using Amazon as a source on one of the admin noticeboards recently. Anyway, writing a module might be best as Sam says, or ask the devs if they can put this feature into AWB (if it was ISBNs it would be a dead cert "yes" but as I say ASINs are a bit more controversial). --kingboyk 12:03, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Also, there's an advanced find/replace feature in AWB somewhere (written by Ligulem if memory serves), which uses regexes and rules. I haven't used it for a long time as I put the regexes I need into my AWB plugin. I'd ask at the AWB talk page as Sam and I are new AWB devs; you'd get a better response from the old hands. --kingboyk 12:03, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank you both! I'll look into your suggestions. I certainly would not be adding any ASINs. Just redisplaying ones that already exist. Plus, before converting to an ASIN that displays, I'd check to see if there was an ISBN or OCLC available. I'm pretty aware of the controversy regarding ASINs, and personally prefer to only use them as a last resort. There are times when neither an ISBN nor an OCLC exists, but an ASIN does ... and then, maybe only for an ASIN on Amazon's UK site, not their US site. There are ~325 articles that have ASINs that are not linking right now. Keesiewonder talk 22:31, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Discussion/updates are continuing a bit on my talk page if you care to follow. Keesiewonder talk 08:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

AWB.sln

I'll ask you this here in case I forget later or am not around.

How should the new plugin project, or AWB.sln, be configured to have the plugin get compiled and added to the AWB bin\Debug folder when running AWB in debug mode? The other binaries seem to get debug-compiled to that folder but not the new plugin.

On a similar note, maybe we could set up a mirror AWB.sln in the kingbotk plugin folder, and add the kingbotk plugin project to that solution for easier debugging. Currently I "run" the plugin in debug mode and copy the created DLLs to the AWB bin\debug folder, then run AWB in debug mode. There has to be an easier way. --kingboyk 15:23, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Just because this seems to be related: when I open AWB I get an error message "The application for project 'C:\Program Files\AWB\Plugins\WPAssessmentsCatCreator\WPAssessmentsCatCreator\WPAssessmentsCatCreator.vbprj' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type (.vbproj) is installed". If this because I don't have vb.net installed on my computer or did you forgot to do something? And about copying the dlls automatically, if the main project references the dll, just change "Copy local" in the prefs to "true". —METS501 (talk) 20:44, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
For the thing about making it copy local, thats what i did =). It works fine for me and steve, but we both have the teamsuite. It is possible that if you only have c# express, it doesnt like it, and needs the vb .net express Reedy Boy 20:46, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Snicker :P Mets doesn't like VB. --kingboyk 22:22, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Joking aside, the project can be removed from AWB.sln if it's causing any problems. I think that plugin is complete anyway. --kingboyk 11:14, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it depends who has got what, and tbh, it would probably be a good idea to have it seperate, as if people want to build from sources and they download c# express, its going to have the same problem. It could be put into the project as a compiled dll as we do with your plugin steve. Reedy Boy 12:34, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
No, leave the source there just remove it from the .sln for now. Btw, VB.NET Express is available without charge and I highly recommend it! ;) --kingboyk 12:39, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Re AWB requests

Hi Reedy Boy,

Spent some time on your feature requests tonight. Both are now fully implemented!

Wow – with extra thanks, as the request list doesn't look that short!  Just hope no strange bugs arise when a new release is compiled and that other folk also find the new features useful. Have a (virtual) drink on me!  Best wishes, David Kernow (talk) 16:52, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

For the bug list and the request list, well, more for the request, we do them as we want, or unless there is something mutually agreed that needs doing. I've got a request on there that i just cant really be bothered doing, so its sitting there! Not all of the devs can do all of the things, so we do stuff as and when we want, it works pretty well, just deoes mean some stay for quite a while. Ah well... Should be having a major release soon, as we've got that GUI change, and a major change/implemntation of the logging. Reedy Boy 18:51, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot

Jeremy...

You shouldnt really be using metsbot for typo fixing, i know it wont be automated, but it wont show up in recent changes either....

Im presuming accidental editing - forgot to log into this account? ;)

Reedy Boy 21:39, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

It's allowed; BAG doesn't regulate manually approved edits, and I used MetsBot for my AWB contributions instead of cluttering my main account contribs. It's good that it doesn't show up in recent changes; it's not vandalism, and there's no mistakes since I'm checking every edit :-) —METS501 (talk) 21:42, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

What went wrong?

Your bot blanked a talk page with WikiProject Banners. I don't know what went wrong, but here's the diff: [3] Errabee 08:21, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I can only presume that it is one of the occasional blanking edits that appear with the media wiki software. Sometimes these occur and dont save properly, ending in the page being blanked, usually when the DB is having a few issues. Reedy Boy 08:24, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
I can confirm this. Today I was about to blank a page on Meta, luckily an edit conflict popped up. MaxSem 09:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Couple of AWB observations/queries

Hi again Reedy Boy,
Am posting this here in case it's limited to my computer or something I've overlooked:

  1. The latest AWB version takes a few seconds to load – because, I guess, it's accessing the internet – and sometimes appears to've crashed; perhaps the next version could show an "Initialising; please wait..." box during this time and then open the main window...?  (Do you/have you used Spybot - Search & Destroy...?  If so, something like its startup.)
  2. Saved settings don't include the list of pages to process (at whatever state it was in when the settings were saved), something I think it did previously... If I'm not imagining this, any chance the option to save the list as part of the settings might be (re)included...?  (I realize the list may be saved separately, but don't find that as convenient.)

Thanks to you and the rest of the AWB crew for keeping it alive, David (talk) 20:57, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

  1. We can do that. It was mentioned by a user that its annoying finding out if the version is disabled when you start trying to work, as such, it does this on startup aswell now. Added - rev 1902
  2. For this one, you are indeed correct, it used to. We decided it would be useful to give the option to the user whether to do this, as such, i think we must have defaulted it to false... Go to General --> User and project preferences. There is an option "Save article list on saving settings". I know this works, as i've been sent lists including saved articles recently. It would onlt be a case of you doing this one, and saving it on your default, then as long as you dont reset settings, it will always do it, even if you save to new settings files.

Hope this Helps!! Reedy Boy 07:18, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the above, Reedy Boy; I've just been using AWB again and have already benefitted from the autosave feature!  Combined with the "Save text to file" menu option, I should remain a happier bunny.
Have also found and set the "Save article list on saving settings" and pleased to report that this too seems to be working well. Thanks again!
Best wishes, David (talk) 23:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
PS I'm guessing 1902 was a typo, as autowikibrowser.svn.sourceforge.net reports revision 1902 as invalid.
Yep. We're around revision 1100 now. I'm not sure which rev he was meaning but 1902 can't be right :) --kingboyk 00:10, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Probably rev 1092 ;) Reedy Boy 06:59, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
The problem with that little revision is that you turn the "Init..." msg on but not off! --kingboyk 10:48, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
And? When settings are loaded, that overrides it - Try it :P Reedy Boy 11:27, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Presume you mean Dada rather than DADA - As the latters the disambiguation page. Reedy Boy 20:42, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Still you undid my revision, waiting for you to explain why? "Origin of the word Dada", really belongs in the middle of history between Zürich and Berlin? Ridernyc 20:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, as you just removed the sections. You didnt re-add them... Looked like vandalism Reedy Boy 20:48, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

You revised my work as I was editing, However I would also argue that the ways Dada is described section is in no way helpful to understanding Dada and in fact should be removed. The pertanant quotes from Tristan Tzaraare already included other places in the article. The quote as it is with no other context is way to long and confusing. The second quote says tells a reader nothing in the context it is in. This is a major problem with Wikipedia right now people add things but if someone removes something to make thearticle have a better flow and be easier to understand it's considered vandalism. My best advice is make sure you use edit summaries - When people leave no summary and then just remove sections, it seems most likely like vandalism. Then it is less likely to be taken as vandalism. Usually if people are moving a section, they do it in one edit. I shall retract/strike through my comment on your talk page. Reedy Boy 21:00, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Help

A user asked me this question:

I have installed MediaWiki 1.9 on my own machine ( My OS is Windows XP). How can I enable math (latex) extension? What kind of .php file should I download? Thanx.

Since MediaWiki isn't my area of expertise, I'm wondering if you can help me out here. You can just respond to him directly. Thanks. Sr13 07:27, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks a lot for your answers to me on this page. I've removed my request as it is not applicable for Commons.
By the way, I tried to use AWB but I ran into proxy problems: is there any way to configure a proxy (url and password) in the tool?
Best regards from France,
-- AlNo (talk) 15:07, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

I think requesting a Feature for proxy support would be the most appropriate. As i dont think theres a specific way to get AWB to support it currently, however, i would've thought it followed the IE current connection settings....? Reedy Boy 15:53, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. There are also some cases where the 'main article' line starts with a colon or semicolon. Colonies Chris 17:10, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

AWB Feature Request: Empty templates & categories [[]]

Looks like you got almost everything!! The only other oddball possibilities that I've come across (thank goodness not too frequently) are: User: & User: . Muchas gracias! SkierRMH 19:44, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Surprisingly I've run across the "User" ones on article (not talk) pages from time to time. Normally someone making an attempt at 'signing' their work, and failing miserably! However, as it doesn't occur that much, it's probably not that big of an issue. SkierRMH 21:32, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

AWB testing

Just a little quirk. When an article is skipped due to nudges, the message seems to still be "No find and replace items".. Rgds, Rich Farmbrough, 16:02 1 June 2007 (GMT).

  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.

Oh, great start, kiddiewinks. You begin by abusing your power and deleting an article which not only clearly asserted its significance but was also tagged as important to the LGBT WikiProject. Rubywine 00:06, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello,
I have reverted my deletion of the article and the talk page.
I am not sure where you are saying it is tagged as importance, if you look at the tagging on the talk page, it is tagged nothing more than .
I have also removed the speedy delete tag for the moment. If it comes up again, please make sure you dispute it, and if necessary, we can take it to WP:AfD, and then the community can decide on its notability.
Sorry for the inconvience,
Reedy Boy 07:33, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
OK, thank you for that. The LGBT Studies WikiProject text says "This article is within the scope of WikiProject LGBT studies, which tries to ensure comprehensive and factual coverage of all LGBT related issues on Wikipedia." We will certainly dispute any further attempts to remove such articles. Rubywine 09:07, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Its quite an interesting one. Some pages can be tagged for projects, and still be not notable. It depends if a bot run has just done it by category or whatever. If you have other problems with this article, don't hesitate to drop me a message on my talk page, and i'll help out the best i can. Reedy Boy 11:25, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Reedy Boy, I apologise for the snarky tone of my protest above. Thank you for restoring the article quickly, and especially for offering to help if we have similar problems again in future. It's much appreciated. Rubywine 13:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

No problem :) Reedy Boy 17:46, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Does it meet WP:WEB? If it doesn't send it to AFD. Clearly not a speedy deletion candidate (and this is what happens if you promote nice people who don't know policy! Don't say I didn't warn ;)). --kingboyk 12:53, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Boredest

I just wanted to let you know that WP:CSD#G4 does not apply for articles previously deleted by prod or speedy deletion. It only applies to articles deleted through an XfD, provided that the content of the recreated article is near-identical to the version previously deleted. Thanks, Nishkid64 (talk) 18:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I remember I made this same mistake when I was a new administrator. I thought you would like to know for future purposes :-P. Also, congrats on adminship. :) Nishkid64 (talk) 18:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Thankyou. I suppose its not a major thing, just something worth being aware of! Thanks for the heads up! Reedy Boy 18:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, it can be if someone asks you to justify your deletion :-P. Nishkid64 (talk) 18:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Let me just expand on this a little. If you're deleting a recreation of a previously speedy deleted article and the content is roughly the same, you can redelete using the same rationale as last time. I personally often use "recreation" as the reason but you'd better not since you've been told not to ;) It's also important to look at how often the article has been recreated and who by. Is one person repeatedly recreating a piece of total crap? If so, warn them. Or is it being recreated by more than one person with some possibility that the speedy deletion was incorrect? Send it to AFD.
Prod deletions are the "softest" we have. Anybody can challenge a prod, any admin can undelete a prodded article, and anyone can recreated a prodded article. If that happens and you think it should still be deleted, send it to AFD.
You must remember when trawling through the CSD categories that many people tag articles for speedy deletion with incorrect rationale, and they tag articles which are quite simply not suitable candidates for speedy deletion. You have to be willing to decline speedy deletion requests: remove the tag, state in your edit summary why you're declining, and optionally send to AFD. --kingboyk 12:49, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Your deletion of Pelea was incorrect. It needed to be changed from a redirect to a disambiguation page. Gdr 19:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

What precisely was patent nonsense about Category:Plant sexuality?[4] KP Botany 21:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

The text that went with it. It also only had one page in it. Reedy Boy 21:50, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
What text went with it? Are you sure someone just didn't vandalize it? Also, there are few botany editors, and our plant sexuality articles are one area where Wikipedia has low contributions, and we have few people doing the categorizing, but this doesn't mean useful and appropriate categories should be deleted. As I'm not an administrator I can't judge what was wrong, and whether it met the criteria for speedy deletion, so please elaborate on what was wrong with the text that went with it. Also, is that a criteria for speedy deletion of a category, that there's only one page in it, particularly if there are many other pages that should and could be appropriately categorized there? Our one categorizer in botany was quite a problematic editor in other ways, and has not been replaced, so we are way behind in categorizing, but I don't want to have to re-create categories that should not have been deleted. KP Botany 21:57, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
The text was:
Plants can,in some respects, be homosexual and heterosexual. Sometimes the male of the species can be found trying to mate with other males of its kind. This was made illegal in 1917, and any plant dfound to be having a gay relationship was hanged, in front of large audiences.
I hope this makes sense to as why it was deleted! The only other edits were blanking of the page, and then them being reverted. Reedy Boy 08:03, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
The article is probably nonsense, but the category not necessarily so. If there's a need for it, Sam can restore it or you can recreate it. Note however that empty categories are fair game for deletion, so if the category is needed populate it! --kingboyk 12:32, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Was this the original text, though, ie, this was it's entire history? This is what was originally created? I've gone through this before were an admin speedy deletes an article based on a revision that's vandalism. I don't like creating categories, it takes me forever to and it's one of those areas of Wikipedia where new editors don't tred easily--so, it's pretty unusual to have vandal-created category, and it WAS NOT EMPTY, and, again, there are FEW botany editors, and we really don't need to have the little work done on botany on Wikipedia, to be undone by overeager deletionist admins. So, was this how the category was created, as a joke category for this comment? Or was this a later revision of the category? KP Botany 18:13, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
It kept being added and removed - bots reverting as vandalism and such. It only had 1 article in it, which means that a category wasnt necessary (2 or more, yeah, fine). I can restore the category with the good edits on it if you wished? Reedy Boy 18:29, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, just restore it with the good edits, please--and, again, there are many botany categories with only one article only because we have so few botany editors, not because the category is not needed.

For organism categories one can always approach WP:ToL to find out whether the category is valid or not. Thanks. KP Botany 18:48, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Restored, and re-added to the article page. Reedy Boy 19:07, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. Now that I've added it to a number of articles, I see we also have Category:Plant reproduction, so I will ask the other botany folks whether we need both, and then I will ask you to speedy delete one if we don't need it.... KP Botany 19:43, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm very confused as to why this template was deleted as patent nonsense? There was absolutely nothing about this template that was "nonsense". The last time I viewed it, it was a legitimate, organized, and useful template. It may need some improvement, but it was far from anything I would consider nonsense. It is it possible to restore the template? If for any reason, it is unnecessary, it can be taken to WP:TFD but to speedily delete it under criteria that it does not fit in any way does not make sense to me. --musicpvm 03:44, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

It was marked as un-useful by its original creator. I do agree, my deletion summary maybe wasnt the best for this template. I've restored it. Reedy Boy 08:08, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Template:South Asian television channels has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. → AA (talkcontribs) — 09:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Be careful with the patent nonsense deletions Sam. Patent nonsense is stuff like "oink barf oh my god". You can stretch the rules a bit when you're more experienced, but as a new admin you should apply the rules vigorously and if unsure use prod or send to AFD. --kingboyk 12:35, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for restoring the template. I wasn't aware that the user who created it had requested its deletion. Despite that, I have found it useful and think it can be improved. I have commented at the TFD. I was just confused because I had used it to browse articles a few days earlier and suddenly it had been speedily deleted with a deletion summary that didn't seem to be applicable. Thanks again for restoring though. --musicpvm 05:57, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

What was patent nonsense about Rexella Stupid Art Collective?

YOU DELETED ME!!!! I WASN'T FINISHED. THE GROUP IS REAL,I wasn't finished with that article, in fact I had just begun and was in the process of researching more material. Besides CSD G1 clearly says this 1. Patent nonsense and gibberish, an unsalvageably incoherent page with no meaningful content. This does not include: poor writing, partisan screeds, obscene remarks, vandalism, fictional material, material not in English, badly translated material, implausible theories, or hoaxes.

This is a real group, and have been active for 7.5 years. They are a Youth subculture-art movement located in Portland, Oregon, USA. Stupid art is a small art movement they are involved with, in it are elements of absurdest performance art, abstractionist visual art, and surrealist music(think like no-wave, noise rock/punk, and elements of early industrial). The Rexella Stupid Art Collective has played several shows around the NW USA, and has had 4 art showings in Portland, they have also been the subject of a Youth Subculture group study at Portland State University for their Sociology department. You can find them on the web at www.rexella.org I demand my article back so that I may finish it. What was stated in the intro can be changed( though this is their offical bio and they have never deviated from it), I would rather have proper coaching than have my article deleted, and if your response to that is "it is clearly stated here in rule XXX", well sorry I don't have the time and money to sit at a computer all day and live Wikipedia.

Thank you, Evan 6/10/2007 4:00 PDT

Evan can you explain me what non-nonsense was in that article? MaxSem 12:33, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

ATR

Apoliges for sticking this at the top of your page...but could you please explain your actions reverting changes made to the ATR and ATR (disambiguation) Pages??? Please contact me via my Talk Page, or email sgerrard@atrgrp.co.uk - URGENTLY! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Atrgroup (talkcontribs).

For ATR, disambiguating pages is fine, but you just recreated the article by copying it. Meaning the edit history was lost from that page, and it was disconnected from its talk page. There was no need to change that to a redirect, it already had the correct otheruses to link to the disambiguation

- I feel it is Very unfair to link "ATR" directly to ATR Regional Aircraft. This is clearly not the only company or organisation with ATR initials, there are clearly more than a couple of uses (for example SRS) I would prefer the List of disambiguation to be listed under ATR, ATR Regional Aircraft could be top of this page with a seperate page (for example the method I created ATR Regional Aircraft

You were also just linking to redlink (non existant articles), which is just pointless.

-I am currently creating the content for these "red pages".

This is the first time I have really edited articles on Wikipedia - so again, sorry for naivety of etiquette. Could you please address my concerns with unbiased actions (I see you have personal interest in Aviation) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Atrgroup (talkcontribs)

Removing Covalent from comparison of web server software

Was there a reason you removed Covalent Enterprise Server from the Overview table but not from the other two tables in Comparison of web server software? I think the contents of the three tables should be consistent. Elving 20:45, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I forgot their was 3 tables. I removed the article and the links they had 'spammed' as advertising, and didnt completely remove it from that page. Will sort it Reedy Boy 20:48, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I had a feeling about you ;)

Yea - Wikipedia is taking over my life, lol. Hey, I'm trying to do some research on bots. I was thinking of trying to make something to convert all the old airport infoboxes to the new one Infobox Airport. I haven't used AWB yet, but can I just use this to create a semi-automated process of changing these over? I'm not experienced with bots yet, so thought I'd see if you knew anything about them. Thanks. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 22:06, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Infobox Switch

Well I guess I won't be able to use AWB for that, cus there are a number of parameter changes. Any suggestions? (You can reply here if you want) --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 22:23, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... You could i suppose... If you got your regex's correct. A custom application could possible be written, you would just need to pull out the relevant data, and stick it back in a again in the new places... Somethings, are just best done by hand. But there isnt much that would be impossible... Whats the sorta backlog we are looking at? Reedy Boy 22:26, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I've always been one to create something from scratch when dealing with a unique project, but I don't know much in application programming - I specialize in web programming. As far as the backlog goes, it's just under 4000 articles. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 22:33, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Non-North American airports

Just wanted to let you know that for some strage reason (I suspect that it's listed in ICAO somplace) but nearly all non-North American airports have the elevation in feet. If you go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Airports#Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) you can then go to the UK AIS or EuroControl and look at the aerodrome charts. Both sites require registration but it's free and in over a year other than the original email I have received nothing from them. By the way I was able to do all the Canadian airports (1000+) using AWB. I used a combination of regex and search and replace, it's faster than by hand but very easy to make errors. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 06:08, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Just noticed that you need to manually link the "city-served", "location", "owner" and "operator" lines. Also if the owner and the operator are the same you can do it like London Gatwick Airport. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 06:18, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
When you use the "metric-elev = yes" it list the aerodrome height as metres/feet but to be correct it should be feet/metres. It's very odd because almost all of Europe list the height in feet and some countries don't list the heights in meters at all on the charts. As to using AWB, I'm not so good with the regex so it didn't work as well as it should but it was a lot quicker than doing them manually. The big problem was dealing with multiple runways. They all came back as r1- and had to be changed but as it's just a single digit it wasn't too bad. The other problem is that it becomes hard if someone has done the lines as "ICAO=EGNM|" but in another article someone else has done "|ICAO=EGNM" followed by another article with "ICAO = EGNM |", you get the point. Basically I would do some and then stop and add another search and replace. I save the xml and just put them at User:CambridgeBayWeather/Airports with no infobox 01 and User:CambridgeBayWeather/Airports with no infobox 01. I used the nowiki there to stop the error messages on the page but it's viewable after you click "edit". There's some odd things as I was trying to turn numbers in the article from 8.45 to 8.5 etc and there is the template as well. It works but I really had to pay attention to the articles. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 10:59, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Bot-generated listas

Hi there. I see from this edit that your bot automatically entered "listas" sortkeys (that example was wrong, and I corrected it, but this is a useful function). Would you be able to say how you did this and contribute to the discussions at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Polbot 3 and User talk:Carcharoth/Polbot3 trial run (current discussion taking place there). Thanks! Carcharoth 13:43, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Oops. Sorry, I see that the previous edit added the listas parameter, not your bot. Sorry. Carcharoth 13:44, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

AWB etc

Thanks for the link to the version 4.0 of AWB - do I take it from the lake of general references this is still in Alpha testing or something like that.! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:03, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Zombina_and_The_Skeletones.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 17:59, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

AWB and Kingbotk Plugin

I have been using it constantly for a couple of days now and can find no errors in it at all. However now I have said that I probably will as soon as finishing this entry. Great work. All I would say is that the new logging approach needs to be clearly documented and announced. I didn't get it to start with but now is working fine. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Airport plug-in

Where can I download the plugin? Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:41, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

It's not quite ready yet, but Reedy Boy said it should be good to go soon. He's just fixing the little bugs here and there, but I've been following his work and he's been doing an excellent job on it! I can' wait to use it. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 07:44, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Yup, thanks Justin :). Just got a bit more fiddling and changes to do. Im more than happy for you to use the plugin aswell (Justin expressed an interest very early on with it.) There will only be a few requirements to doing it - ie using an edit summary like i was for example. But when its done (hopefully tonight for me), i'll let you know! Reedy Boy 10:39, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 10:46, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
There seems to be a small error when doing helipads. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 12:43, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, i did notice it didnt pick up the lenght in m, but the capture group was wrong. Will sort out the surface. Thanks! Reedy Boy 12:45, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

I noticed some minor stuff and a major one. Minor first, in the old infobox the town served was automatically linked, the new one doesn't do that and it must be done manually. I noticed that with Adisucipto International Airport the "coor dm" didn't update but I suspect that's because it was looking for "coor dms". Now here is what looks like the major problem. Check the operator, city-served, elevation-f and elevation-m. I noticed it on some but as yet I'm not sure how many. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:04, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

The location and city served does not auto-link so that complex linking can be used. IE: Daytona Beach, Florida. I think this is better then just autolinking a complete city/state, because airports of different countries can use different format. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pilotboi (talkcontribs) 05:00, 27 July 2007.
I agree. If the linking is automatic then you get this as opposed to Olds-Didsbury Airport. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 07:23, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Ok, for the de-linking/differently linking of wikilinks, i did mention to check User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin for known issues. There is the problem with both the regex's i have used, that | is usually the end of the parameter, so blocks that out. The solution for me, has been to manually close links, and copy from the diff engine. I did notice the copy (on right click) of the svn version doesnt work from the diff browser. I think that could do with being changed.

So, as you 2 have discussed, the plugin should not automatically wikilink anything, the user can/should do that.

The coor dm not going to coord, is precisely that reason, it is looking for coor dms, i can add coor dm to the list of changes.

The idea of the plugin wasnt to do absolutely do everything automatically, just speeden up the migration process.

Some of those edits i think, are with 'old' versions of the plugin, where i have fixed and updated stuff later.

I shall do some more edits today, and see what problems arise there.

Reedy Boy 08:46, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I've just worked my way back to 21:34, 26 July 2007 (hist) (diff) Abrams Municipal Airport and fixed them. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 08:58, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

As a thought. If IATA/ICAO = "n/a" or "none", do you want me to set the plugin to set these to "" - ie nothing? Reedy Boy 09:12, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Probably. If the IATA/ICAO line is left blank it produces the word "none". CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 09:17, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I have done about 20 more edits, if you wouldnt mind checking over them for any errors/bugs? Reedy Boy 09:50, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I got Airport Chkalovskiy where the image had been deleted and Agua Caliente Airport and Ağrı Airport where the elevation is going into the city line. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 11:26, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
The first occurs due to the fact it doesnt ignore commented out bits. Which is fair enough - Does this want changing if easily possible?. The second ones... Im not sure. I'll have to stick copies of one of them in the sandbox and try tracing them through. Reedy Boy 11:37, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
The image issue is more like the linking city thing. Just a reminder to look for it. I suspect that it's not very common. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 08:00, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
I came across this edit as of 09:20, 27 July 2007 to Ajaccio - Campo dell'Oro Airport done with the User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin where it did not pick up the runway data when migrating to the new infobox. This one apparently slipped through the cracks since the runway data is still missing from the article (I just now restored it). Perhaps you have already resolved this issue with the plug-in, but just wanted to let you know about it. -- Zyxw 08:00, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

v4 Release

Me and Steve are thinking we'll release AWB v4 in Beta to all users....

Opinions?

Oh, and welcome back!

Reedy Boy 18:55, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure, sounds good to me. I haven't been around, but I'll assume that most of the bugs have been sorted out. I'd go ahead a release it but not make the update mandatory and also include a message that warns against running unassisted bots with the new version in case of undiscovered bugs. We should also make the official title "4.0.0.0 Beta" to make it clear. But how can we indicate the beta in the [assembly: AssemblyVersion("VERSIONHERE")] structure which only takes numbers? —METS501 (talk) 19:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
We can't I think. We could put a big beta banner onto the splashscreen though, and I've just written a "warning" message which you're free to beef up if you like. --kingboyk 22:34, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
  • I just re-enabled version 3.9.1.0. On at least 2 of my computers the updater is failing to update from 3.9.1.0 to 4.x with a "nothing to update" error. — xaosflux Talk 00:59, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

AWB bug or settings file?

Hi, I saw your comment re the relisted AWB bug I found:

I know for a fact i've fixed this. Ive done quite a few edits with the latest version (see my contribs) and NONE of these have been added to my watchlist...
It may just be an old settings file.. See if anyone else confirms the bug...

I'm definitely still having problems, the "Add all to watchlist" option is unchecked but everything goes onto my watchlist, I have to remove them all manually.

I was wondering what you meant by "an old settings file" - if you can suggest what I should try to do at my end, then that'd be helpful, if we find something that works then one of us can add a follow-on comment to the bug report. I'm happy to perform any testing that would be helpful in resolving this (having worked as a programmer in the past, I know something of the joys of testing - but I'm too rusty to try delving into the AWB code myself). In case it makes a difference:

  • I installed 4.0 beta on top of 3910, i.e. I didn't remove/delete 3910 first. Would that make a difference?
  • My monobook.js only contains importScript('User:Lupin/popups.js');
    • However, I have Active Scripting disabled in IE6, which I saw recommended somewhere as a performance boost for AWB when using popups. As I use Firefox for pretty much all browsing, this doesn't affect anything else.
  • My monobook.css is empty.

Thanks! Please feel free to reply here rather than my talk page, I'll spot it. Paddles TC 09:33, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, when the bug was originally reported, i was able to find the bug, and fixing it solved it. Im wondering, regarding the old settings file, it has a setting, that is loaded and not shown. Could you try using a new settings file, and see if that solves it. If it does, we should be able to change the old file, if it doesnt solve the problem, it definately needs more looking into. I cant see it being a problem really...
Can you check your settings file for override watchlist setting - <OverrideWatchlist>false</OverrideWatchlist>, maybe set to true, depending. Also, look at Special:Preferences, the watchlist tab
Add pages I create to my watchlist
Add pages I edit to my watchlist
Add pages I move to my watchlist
Add pages I delete to my watchlist
Is the edit one selected? Mine isnt... And you are using the monobook skin? Cheers, Reedy Boy 10:51, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Ahhh, found what the answer was - configuration problem, in General/User and Project Preferences, the checkbox "Allow AWB to override watchlist settings" was cleared which resulted in <OverrideWatchlist> being false, and hence AWB ignoring the setting of the "Add all to Watchlist" (<Watch> in the settings file) - in which case the default from Special:Preferences applies. Once I fixed the override setting, I retested and it works as expected.
So yes, you did fix the programming bug before. I guess I'd class this as a useability bug though - if <OverrideWatchlist> is false, then the "Add all to Watchlist" (<Watch>) option should be greyed out and unselectable as it is being ignored - particularly as <OverrideWatchlist> is false by default, so it is not obvious to the user that they have to do anything to enable the "Add all to Watchlist" setting to be used.
Thanks for your help, if you hadn't mentioned the settings file and the existence of the <OverrideWatchlist> setting (and realising that it wasn't being changed when I toggled "Add all to Watchlist" - which enabled me to find what was being changed), then I probably wouldn't have found an answer myself. I'll update the bugs page. Paddles TC 12:39, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm guessing youve installed AWB (as you approve users). I have been recently approved and downloaded AWB onto my Windows 2000 machine. Plugin

How's the plugin going? If it's up and working I was thinking to suggest that it be put forward as the collaboration of the month to get all the boxes converted. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 15:39, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

That would be cool - but would definatly need some documentation on what to do after all the automatic things are done. Because each one needs to be manually checked and in all cases, minor changes need to be made. For example, the cities have to be wikilinked. Also - for Sam: there is a bug with some articles - it doesn't copy the values to the right parameters. The location is in the type, the owner is in the location, the elev-f is in the location, and the elev-m is in elev-f, or something to that effect. Let me know if you need an example if you can find one yourself, as I know it's been happeneing quite frequently, at least with US airports. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 18:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
I know thats there.. I just cant see why it does it, as it seems just to be random. If you can see a common factor between them, i can try and fix it... Reedy Boy 18:56, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Wilco --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 19:31, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Another note - I noticed that the city normally goes to the city-served param. It was my understanding that location is to be used by default and that city-served be used only if the city served is different then the location. Would you be able to switch it? Unless you have different thoughts on it. Also - can it add to the city as well? Other small notes, if possible, make the first instance of Asphalt and Concrete wikilinked. And even better, de-wikilink later instances. If any of this can't be done, that's fine. Just wondering. Thanks, Justin --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 22:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC) One more bug I found - for helipads - after converted, the 'length-' is missing from the two params for each helipad. So it just says h1-f and h1-m. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 23:00, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Helipad was a simple mistake, thats now fixed. Also changed city served/location around. Wikilinks can be added. It may not create properly disambiguated links... But.. If CambridgeBayWeather agrees aswell, i'll change that. The duplicate wikilinks, that should be doable. Ie they are the same, and the first isnt wikilinked, wikilink the first, etc
And the idea about collaberation of the month. Good idea, when we get a few more bugs fixed, it would clear the backlog fairly quickly!! Reedy Boy 23:15, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

One more minor thing to check for: Change public to Public, as I'm coming across many articles that have this typo. And you gotta get online so you can send me the latest version, as I can't find it available anywhere on here. --Pilotboi / talk / contribs 01:14, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Done that, and military to Military. I was online for a few hours yesterday evening... But i presume you were probably at work! Reedy Boy 08:01, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Cfd.dll

Hi and thanks for the message. :) I'm playing with the options as I'm typing this -- strangely, I can still reproduce this, well, whatever the hell it is. I'll post at the bug page if I figure out what's causing this. Cheers S up? 22:31, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

At the moment, I'm running XP SP2, latest patches but I have access to pretty much every OS since the good old Windows 3.11 for Workgroup days (I do a lot of work with VMs). I think I should have Visual Studio somewhere, albeit I'm more of a Unix/networking guy. The strange thing is, it does look it's working some of the time. At first, I thought it had something to do with the "suppress 'using AWB' in edit summary" option but that wasn't it. And it doesn't have anything to with comments either, apparently (I just tested that including different line break configurations and excessively long comments). I noticed that there's a 'CFD plugin disabled' pop up that comes up (seemingly) at random and I have no clue what's causing it. I'll try to start over with a clean install, new XML files and a test account. Oh, and thanks again for your help. S up? 22:47, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi again, just a quick note to let you know that, apparently, this was a problem at my end. Boy, I do feel dumb. Anyway, thank you for all your help and if I ever figure out what in the name of His noodly appendages caused this, you'll be the first to know. :) Cheers S up? 23:22, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for following up on this issue. I think that the focus should be wherever the user sets it i.e. the user may set the focus to the category box, find box, edit box etc. while a page / pages are loading and after a page loads the focus should be where the user left it. If that's too difficult to implement, then the Save button would be a good place to focus I think, or maybe the top of the edit box if the edit box is currently displayed (rather than one of the log options). Thanks Rjwilmsi 18:07, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi,

I registered for AWB, downloaded the software and tried to use it. My internet was too slow to use it and I got confused as to how start. Are you aware of a simple primer on how to use this tool?

I located you as author of orphan AWB screenshots scheduled to be transferred to Wikimedia Commons.

AWB generate from logs

I meant that in the delete log Special:Log/delete, it gets the names of the users who deleted the page, and not the page that was deleted. In the generate from log, there should be two options, one to get the users that performed the action, and one to get the page it was performed on. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 23:19, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I would recommend keeping the special pages thing the same, but adding Log (user) and Log (page). The only issue is on the user rights log, the user is either the account being created or the user creating a new account, on that log it would have to put the value of user into page if page isnt there. Changing the current special page method would cause problems, as it's only the log pages that contain both fields. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:04, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, would like approval for AWB if possible. Thanks, Mmernex 18:27, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

The noob (webcomic)

The speedy deletion did not give me time to put a hangon tag on the page. The reasons for the last AFD have been made moot due to the reinstatement of the WCCA awards page, and the article deserves a new AFD, if that's what you wish. I protest the speedy delete. Sorry about that :) There were a heap of pages to do it on, and it made no big visible difference (5 words at the bottom in an almost-never-looked-at box) so I assumed there wouldn't be many objections. Plus, the great thing with a wiki, if someone objects its two clicks (or one if using a good user script) to remove :). Feel free to remove if you want, it just makes the userlist look weird. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 09:16, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Is it just me, or does the switch bit look like an unattributed unnecessarily substituted Template:ustatus/ColourCoded? It would be easier to transclude that, then updates will carry across as well :) Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 09:40, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

thank you for editing

Thank you for editing the article about routes between China and the U.S. I actually like it when someone makes a change, even a small one.

One thing that I have to learn is how to cite references. I just do < ref > and </ref > though it can be more complicated than that such as using "cite web","cite news", naming references, etc. I will look for the WP page that explains it (and if there's a short and easy way to do the "cite web" format with the author, date, date retrieved, etc.)--Archtrain 22:28, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Brand-new person; my first entry

Hello Reedy Boy--I have not ever written anything for or in Wikipedia before. By clicking around on the article "Anthony Gilbert," I found your name. You must have done something to process the article about Gilbert. Perhaps you can help in this respect: the article mentions that the author who wrote under that name published 69 crime novels, 51 of which featured Mr. Crook. When I read the item, I wished the author had listed the novels by title--is there some way to communicate with the contributor, suggesting he/she add this list info? She/he might well have a list of the novels--even a partial one--if he/she has knowledge of the total number. // Sorry for asking what must be a truly off-topic question. Garyb1 18:14, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Garyb1, see your talk page or see this link for list of crime novels by this author. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/g/anthony-gilbert/ Good luck writing in wikipedia! Archtrain 18:28, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

You absolutely a rarity. Amongst the many admins i have come across - i must say your approach to topics seems to put you at the top of the heap. StatusBot

About a week ago, I added the StatusBot category to a few userpages of members of BAG, for the purpose of adding the ustatus template to the list on WP:BAG. Some users have disagreed with this, so I am going through the user talk pages of people I added the category to. Would you mind keeping the category, or would you prefer it to be removed? If you want it removed, you may delete your subpage of User:StatusBot/Status, in this case, User:StatusBot/Status/Reedy Boy, and remove the category from your userpage. This will hide the ustatus template and stop it being re-activated. Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:28, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

American football v football

What are your thoughts on how to proceed? Meegs has not commented on the article in a few days and while I respect his opinion; there doesn't seem to be anything that overrides WP:D in it. Most people who speak english (i'm not saying just native speakers - but anyone) refer to "soccer" as "football". We've identified more problematic articles (canadian football) - so i think they could be left out. I might make those changes anyway - but if done on an individual level and not by a bot - i can do a few at a time and see how people respond. Juan Miguel Fangio| ►Chat  08:04, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Your bot and the Basel airport article

Your bot User:Reedy Boy/Airport Infobox Migration Plugin recently updated the article on Basel Airport. In doing so it got rid of the entry:
nativename2 = Aéroport international Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg

This airport belongs to two countries (as explained in the article), which speak two different languages, and therefore has two different names. I have edited the box to include both names:
"Flughafen Basel-Mülhausen-Freiburg" and "Aéroport Bâle-Mulhouse-Freiburg".

I hope this doesn't break any rules for this infobox. TiffaF 11:49, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

bot request

Do you realize that you "speedy approved" a bot request to mass edit every bio article with an infobox? That's gotta be what? 10,000? 100,000 articles? Who knows. Anyway, it looks like a good percentage of those are somewhat screwed up now. I tell you I'm pretty tired of Smackbot/Rick Farmbrough's edit-now-fix-later philosophy. Please do not approve Smackbot for anything faster than 1 edit per second in the future. He is just way too trigger-happy with untested bot edits. Thanks. Kaldari 02:10, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I meant 1 edit per minute :) The bot request I was referring to was Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/SmackBot_approval_XII. Sorry I couldn't paste that in earlier, but I was writing to you from my cell phone. Obviously, this bot request was not trivial and should have garnered more community input, IMO. And yes, I posted a notice to Smackbot's talk page (after using the emergency shut off). He apparently fixed the problem I brought to his attention, but did not respond to my broader query concerning the usefulness of the mass edit. But that isn't surprising, as Rich tends to ignore anyone who questions what he's doing after he's gotten approval (from my experience). Kaldari 15:38, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
He also seems to have a bit of a reality distortion field in place: "Per a user request, majority of articles seem to already follow this standard," which was absolutely not true before the request was approved. Kaldari 15:41, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Anyway, I'm not interested in causing a bit fuss about this. I'd just like it if there was a little bit more thought and discussion about these bot approvals, especially for such massive changes. Thanks for taking the time to hear me out and respond. I know it's a thankless job dealing with bot requests at all, but we need to take them more seriously, IMO. Kaldari 15:49, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

AWB Request

I'm one of those darn under-500 mainspace edit folks, mainly because my work here is very specialized - I work with locator maps for US cities and towns. I recently uploaded newer versions of my maps for Massachusetts that now include an outline of the county they reside in along with just the outline of the town (see Easthampton, Massachusetts for an example). So now I have to go through all 351 Massachusetts town infoboxes and update the 'Location of XXX in Massachusetts' text to 'Location of XXX in YYY County in Massachusetts.' I'd rather not have to do that all by hand. :) My next project is to upload similar maps for Connecticut towns, which will involve 169 nearly-identical links to the recently uploaded Commons file. I also recently got a bot on Commons to help with the batches of maps I'm going to upload.

I've been declined twice through the normal AWB-processes so I wanted to see if you can help me out here. Petros63 10:35, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Can you make a change to the plugin. It turns out that almost every airport that uses Template:Coord needs to have "display=title" or it's not picked up by Google Earth. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:32, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

my talk page

I know you probably meant well, but please don't delete pages in my userspace. They are all there for a reason, I know what I was doing and reverted your edits. Thanks.

As with StatusBot, as you can see here, Status Bot has failed to update my status. I know there have been problems lately, but I noticed that it was back up working today. But still, my name is in the category, but no updating. I eventually created the page myself to see if it would start working but no. (Note, I have been offline (for 1hour+)since I created page, which should be ample time for the bot to operate to state I am offline).

If you reply, please do so on this page, as I won't watch this one, Thanks SpecialWindler 11:33, 3 September 2007 (UTC).

Re: GetDiff() Exception

The problem was on my side as I suspected. I just wanted to make sure before I marked it as "not a bug". Regards, Jogers (talk) 10:52, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

I feel a bit silly now. It happened because I simply haven't built "Wikidiff2". The same exception is thrown when "Wikidiff2.dll" is not present in the AWB folder. Jogers (talk) 13:27, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it's definitely worth to make AWB check if the Wikidiff2.dll is present at startup. The bug reported by Erasoft24 may be something else, though. Jogers (talk) 13:36, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I have the files "Wikidiff2.dll" and "WikiFunctions.dll" in the AWB folder. The problem starts when I migrate to windows vista (ultimate 64-bit edition). Before this I used Windows XP (32-bit), there was not such a problem when using AWB (I used many versions of this soft). Let me describe the problem in a few words: the soft starts ok, I select ro.wp (I use the soft on the Romanian wikipedia project), I can log in, I can make a list (for example from a category), then when I try to add a word (for example with the function append/prepend text) I press the button "Start the process", I receive the following error The type initializer for 'WikiFunctions.WikiDiff' threw an exception.
Here are the details of this error: (You can erase the details after you see them, I also uploaded the error in the bug area of AWB)
Status New
Description Exception: TypeInitializationException

Message: The type initializer for 'WikiFunctions.WikiDiff' threw an exception. Call stack: at WikiFunctions.WikiDiff.DiffHead()

  at AutoWikiBrowser.MainForm.GetDiff()

The user might well have been informed, but the user in question also let the bot edit way past the 50-edit limit he commited himself to, created a bot that didn't do what he said it would (the bot was authorised to warn uploaders that had omitted or poorly formatted information when uploading images, not to tag these images for speedy deletion) and ignored the huge negative feedback. Until this situation is cleared up, and the various responsibilites assesed, I think it might be better to leave this bot blocked for the moment, especially since the user has not made any request or given any explanation yet. It would also be nice to consult the blocking admin before undoing a block, especially for an account that has basically deleted hundreds of images without permission. Thanks for your comprehension, yandman 15:14, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Advice on plagiarism?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchikan_International_Airport appears to have much of the history of the airport plagiarised from the airport's website ( http://www.borough.ketchikan.ak.us/airport/airport_history.htm ). Some people may assert that it is free use because it is a government website. What do you think is the correct thing to do?

As a temporary measure, I put the plagiarised text as a block quote and added a citation. If free use is permitted, this is sufficient.

A permanent solution may be to re-write it. WP policy seems to say that plagerised material should be deleted (if it is not free use). What is your advice? Archtransit 17:55, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice. I have finished the revisions. This type of work is simply my effort to improve the wikipedia project, a sort of house cleaning. I think that if one doesn't want to write, it's acceptable simply to read articles. One doesn't have resort to stealing text from other websites. Some days, I just read WP and add little or nothing. You are wrong in your defence of this move. Keane is a name firstly and foremost, a name the band in question are named after. new article idea

I saw this article [8] which says

Singapore and the United Kingdom have concluded a landmark Open Skies Agreement (OSA) that effectively removes all restrictions on air services operated by carriers of both countries. ....Under it, SIA can operate as many services as the Singapore-UK market can support. It can also pick up passengers from London's Heathrow Airport and fly them to other cities, including those in the United States. The comprehensive agreement even allows SIA to operate like a domestic carrier in the UK and mount any number of services between UK cities. Similarly, UK carriers will be able to operate any number of services beyond Singapore to any city in the world.

This could be a new start of a potential new article about air transport in Singapore and include how they were denied rights between Australia and the US. Another idea would be to use the above block quoted article as a reference to an article about UK routes, incorporating ideas from the Bermuda II agreement covering US and UK routes. The Singapore angle would be easier since Singapore dates from about 1965 while UK aviation history is much longer.

The quoted agreement is not mentioned in any article relating to Singapore. It also doesn't fit well with the articles currently in WP. Archtransit 15:52, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Too much time on my hands? No, it's too lofty goals! Either of the 2 proposed articles would take too much time to write. My recent contributions have been only a few minor ones per day (usually one fact not noted in an article). I learned my lesson from choosing a difficult article to write. Some articles are much easier to write, like those of defunct airlines. The history of open skies in Singapore would be a very time consuming article to write because of each sentence of the article would come from a different citation and there is no one citation that covers the topic. Perhaps I'll find time to write the difficult articles in 2008! Archtransit 19:13, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Success in finding rare fact about Boeing 737!

I knew that the 737-300 was once marketed as a business jet version, the 77-33. I found a citation for it! A significant number of my edits are some unusual fact that most general review articles don't include. I then search for a citation to document the fact. I hope that's adding value to wikipedia.

If one reads an easy to locate review article and then re-phrases it for wikipedia, that builds wikipedia but doesn't add anything to the mankind's knowledge base. If I'm not stupid enough, I hope to recall unusual facts then insert it into wikipedia, an easy to locate reference for mankind. Archtransit 19:32, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Feature request

Any chance of getting Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature_requests#Search_and_replace_in_image_captions? Or am I missing a trick with AWB? (Note, I don't want to turn on the include images/interwiki/nowiki/url thing.)Rich Farmbrough, 14:42 5 October 2007 (GMT).

Can you approve my bot in AWB

Hi Reedy Boy. My bot was recently approved (Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/CapitalBot) and flagged as a bot, so could you approve it for use with AWB for me? I posted a request here already: Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage. I just want to get started while it's still the weekend. Thanks, and let me know if there's a problem. --CapitalR 19:43, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi

My bot, chem-awb (talk · contribs) was removed from the userlist here, presumably as "duplicate". I've lost access, and I don't see chem-awb anywhere on this page. Would you look into this please? You can reply here, instead of my talk page. Thanks! --Rifleman 82 07:04, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

AFD Singapore Airlines Fleet

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Airlines_fleet and the AFD link at the top. Rather than become emotional ("this article is stupid" or "this article MUST be kept"), I made some comments that I think are rational. What do you think about my comments? Crazy? Sane? Please note that I'm more interested in your opinion of my train of thought as I haven't been involved in AFD's. I'm not asking you to vote (canvassing). Archtransit 19:37, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Bot flags/WP:BRFA

Per my understanding that anti-vandal Bots should run unflagged so that their edits continue to show in recent changes, I have changed you listing of CounterVandalismBot to say that it does not require a flag [9]. I hope that's OK - if there is some special reason why this Bot should be an exception to that rule, feel free to revert. WjBscribe 23:28, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Just wondering why you marked a anti-vandalism bot as needing a flag? AVB's should never be flagged. βcommand 23:28, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Autotagging Liverpool articles

This would be great, and would save me so much time. Is this something only you can do, or anyone? Just to confirm I would want all the talk pages where the articles are in Category:Liverpool F.C. and its subcategories tagged with . Obviously many of the articles will already have the football template on them, some with and some without the parameters, is your bot able to handle this? John Hayestalk 16:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps you should check one or two more carefully, esp. the England task force tag. Craig Bellamy is Welsh! This has come up in the WT:WPF page at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Reedy Bot. Cheers --Daemonic Kangaroo 18:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Craig Bellamy should be covered by the England task force, that is fine. Thanks for helping. John Hayestalk 07:21, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I noticed not all the pages have been done, was this because of the problems with some parameters being removed. But regardless it has saved me a lot of time. John Hayestalk 09:12, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah thanks, sorry if it caused you any extra work. John Hayestalk 10:31, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Howdenjuniors.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Howdenjuniors.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:33, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion for Reedy Bot's use in positioning DEFAULTSORT

Due to a technical peculiarity in its programming, DEFAULTSORT is unable to perform its alphabetizing function within discussion page categories unless it is entered below the WikiProject tags/Wikitags. If placed above the tags, DEFAULTSORT is completely ineffective. While adding tags to discussion pages, Reedy Bot has been recently repositioning DEFAULTSORT to the top of those pages and, as a result, negating DEFAULTSORT's function. I have restored DEFAULTSORT to its original position on some of the pages, but hope that you can help by canceling that part of Reedy Bot's instructions. —Roman Spinner (talk) 06:25, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Request concerning NewPage Watcher

I use NewPage watcher and I thought to myself that a great improvement for the program could be the ability to type in the articles that you want to access and load them that way as well, so that it's not only a newpage watcher, it can also be used to tag articles that aren't quite new but nonetheless need tags. I have noticed that NPW is a great tool for tagging articles for various reasons new or not new. I would also like to suggest a few new buttons for new tags be added as well. Perhaps a "POV" tag. I wanted some input on this. I also noticed that when I load NPW, prior to looging in I can see "Images" and "Prod" tabs. What are these for and why do they disappear after I log in? Could NPW be used also for tagging new images? Wikidudeman (talk) 17:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

tagging WPE

Hi, From the look of my watchlist you (or your bot) seem to be tagging lots of Somerset villages with WPE banners & using the Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset assessments - which is appropriate... however, I've previously suggested that rather than doing this for thousands of articles the assessments done by various county projects could just be incorporated into the status box on Wikipedia:WikiProject England without adding more banners. If several banners are needed could they be "nested" as part of your automatic process?— Rod talk 20:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

I have made much the same observation on the WPE pages, in respect of WPLondon. County projects are daughter projects of WPE, and so the relationship should be assumed, or a link provided to WPE in the county banner. The proliferation of banners just makes talk pages impossible to use - (say) Aldgate - Architecture, London, England, Chaucer, London Transport. IMHO, it's overkill. Reedy Bot is giving a bad name to England project

copy of note below is on England page

I'm guessing that this project supports the tagging of articles with the England banner. I have tried complaining to the bot but it continues to add boxes to articles that are already part of the Derbyshire, Bedfordshire and Somerset projects. Now it may seem nice to see that Project England now has thousands of articles tagged but its not a useful use of time and makes some poor editors talk page a spam template mess. Just remember that Wikiproject UK are going to tag all the England articles... oh and wikiproject Europe ... and Geography ... and English ... and ... Can someone please stop this bot. Does anyone support this bot? (I note it has done useful work in the past and some of its work now may be useful Victuallers 17:30, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

What is original research?

Hello. Boeing has a search feature where you can look up orders and deliverys. You can find out how many 737's were built between 1975 and 1980 or how many delivered so far. Say I wanted to find out who ordered the most 737's. By looking it up by that search feature, is that original research? Or just referenced information that isn't in paragraph form? http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm?content=userdefinedselection.cfm&pageid=m15527 As you probably know, WP wants referenced facts, not original research and editor's own theories. I tend to think that using the search function is not original research just used to verify the largest customers. Archtransit 19:25, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply. No, not 737. I'm working with Fnlayson to improve the 747 article. I think we've made progress. Archtransit 19:32, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

AFD candidate

You know me. If there's an article about aviation, I'm all for it! How about this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/VIP_Air_Ambulance I explained why I think it meets the deletion criteria. What's your opinion (you don't have to respond to the AFD or decide on it, just curious to your opinion or advice) Archtransit (talk) 19:43, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

AWB

I hope you don't mind me contacting you specifically for a question about AWB. I was wondering if there is a code that will ignore contractions inside quotation marks. I'm doing a find a and replace to get rid of quotation marks, just to improve it a little with "copy edit" guidelines. 95% of the time or more, I ignore changes inside quote marks, because they are usually direct quotes, or are the episode name. Is there anyway to make it so when it is finding contractions, it ignore contractions inside the quotation marks. thank you, Ctjf83 talk 18:15, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Deleted Article

Hi, I have a question about an article which was deleted by you some time ago due to lack of content [16]. I think I have plenty of material to develop this page now and have a preliminary version available here User:Atabek/United_States-Azerbaijan_relations. So could you allow me to restart the page which was deleted? Thanks. Atabek (talk) 16:57, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
