ROUTE 66 STILL EXISTS!

September 2020

Information icon Hello, I'm Imzadi1979. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to U.S. Route 66 have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse. Thanks. Imzadi 1979  01:28, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This edit was legally constructive. U.S 66 was never “decommissioned” In the us highway system. RealMODOT2 (talk) 01:29, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please see:

ARIZONA-KANSAS-MISSOURI-NEW MEXICO-OKLAHOMA-TEXAS Elimination of U.S. Route 66 APPROVED
Eliminate present U.S. Route 66 between the present beginning at Scotland, Missouri and the terminus at Sanders, Arizona.[1]

So yes, it was decommissioned in June 1985 by the Route Numbering Committee of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. (A scanned copy of the original document is also available on Wikimedia Commons.) Imzadi 1979  01:37, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I got it from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials themselves. You may download a copy of the "USRN Application Database with Meeting Minutes and Application Results" here. The scanned copy of the committee agenda was extracted from that file (warning, it's a large file to download). If you doubt the veracity of the original document, you have:
So if the AASHTO document isn't sufficient, perhaps History.com, The New York Times or the National Park Service would be. Imzadi 1979  01:51, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
