DYK for Deadwax

On 24 February 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Deadwax, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the rare, much sought after record in Deadwax has killer sound? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Deadwax. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Deadwax), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

More articles to potentially nominate for deletion

Hello,

Not sure why this section got deleted, so I am re-adding it again. Anyway, I just saw that you fully nominated the article List of people with bipolar disorder for deletion, which I initially nominated. Here are others that I initially nominated which you should fully nominate for deletion (feel free to nominate your own suggestions as needed):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_diagnosed_with_dyslexia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_major_depressive_disorder

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_synesthesia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_an_anxiety_disorder

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_with_schizophrenia

2606:5580:30C:7F9E:D05B:81E5:63E3:29CD (talk) 19:20, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Example reason: "See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people with autism spectrum disorders as to why it should be deleted. There are no objective medical tests for bipolar disorder, and the article has a huge potential to cause major WP:BLP issues." 2606:5580:30C:7F9E:D05B:81E5:63E3:29CD (talk) 19:37, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

  • I nominated one but I would heavily recommend that you create an account and nominate the others yourself - I don't really feel comfortable nominating all of them offhand. You could also post at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine about this as well. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 20:01, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Japanese names

I'm not going to revert, but I noticed you've moved a bunch of Japanese bios from surname-last to surname-first, such as Ōsugi Sakae and Itō Noe. It's no longer hard-coded into MOS:JAPAN, but the convention at WikiProject Japan is for names to be surname-last for those born since the advent of the Meiji era (so post-1868). Ōsugi was born in 1885 and Itō was born in 1895. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 01:29, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi Curly Turkey - thanks for letting me know! I thought that if the individuals were more well known (particularly in academia) for having surname-first, then it was OK to have them as surname-first. I may have misread this! ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 14:19, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
    • If sources consistently or near-consistently use surname-first, then we would as well, per WP:COMMONNAME. A quick googling gives a 2:1 ratio of surname-first for Ōsugi, and 3:1 for surname last for Itō. Exceptions should be exceptional, though, and a non-compliant formatting should have overwhelming evidence to back it. Curly "JFC" Turkey 🍁 ¡gobble! 23:02, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Emma Fielding Baker -- Thank you!

ReaderOfThePack: Hello and thank you for your organizational skills on my edits to the Emma Fielding Baker Wiki page. I am a History grad student in Southern California and have selected Emma as my project page. I just went in now to start the organizing process with category titles, etc., and saw that it had already been done! I was so happy! I love the photo arrangement...didn't even know you could do that. I've done deep research on Emma's life and I still have items in my sandbox that I will be adding, but I have to make sure my sources are publicly accessible. I have received some docs from the archivist of the Mohegan Tribe but have to vet the sources. You will be seeing more info added in the coming days. Once again, thank you for making Emma's page look so good. I feel a responsibility to her memory which is now viewable by the world!--Spellman888 (talk) 00:48, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Article Assessment

With the completion of our project banner project, we have a large backlog of unassessed articles. Doing article rating is a great way to find interesting articles with-in our project's scope and to also find articles that were incorrectly tagged. This project will hopefully let us better monitor and aid in the development the many articles that this project supports. Thanks to Legoktm for all his work in making this happen.

GA Review?

Hi! I was wondering if you'd be interested in doing a GA review for Derrick Barnes? Another editor has put a lot of work has gone into it recently but since I helped some with the article's beginnings I think I am conflicted from doing the review myself. I appreciated your knowledge when you did a GA review of mine and so I thought of you when trying to think of someone who might be willing to review this one. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:47, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

  • ReaderofthePack, it's great that you've taken this one on, but please don't edit the Wikipedia:Good article nominations to say so. That page is refreshed by bot every 20 minutes, so your insertion did not survive the bot's next run. (It's a page that shouldn't be edited at all, since the bot does all the work.) Thanks again for doing this review! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:48, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter

The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
  • Wales Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
  • Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
  • Kingdom of Prussia Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.

Other notable performances were put in by Chicago Barkeep49 with six GAs, United States Ceranthor, England Lee Vilenski, and Saskatchewan Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and Denmark MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.

So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Liangbatou

Thank you. I was about to clean up the citations myself. The article was written as part of a class assignment for History of East Asian Costume at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I was the librarian attached to the class. I think it is as worthy of topic as the Manchu "Queue" but, in general, students were resistant to using the Berg Fashion Library database or other library resources. I ended up adding some content and a citation myself, as you can see. Anyway, thank you for the flag. Hopefully, it won't just sit there but will motivate others to improve the article. --Librarianhelen (talk) 20:28, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Need Help on Vandalism/Disruptive Editing

Hi hope you are well! The page that I created Kwong Weng Yap years has been receiving persistent disruptive edits after recent news that the subject will be a potential political candidate. I read the parts in Wikipedia on Vandalism and hope to increase semi-protection for the page because I think some of these IP editors e.g. IP 131.111.225.6 use shared accounts and seems to have other motives etc for the recent spike of edits and vandalism. Hoping not for the article to be defaced permanently. Also tried to revert some content but doubt that will help much in the longer term. Trying hard to be respectful and civil to the IPs. Will appreciate it greatly if you can help! :) Superwifi (talk) 08:02, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Awards in Red

MrLinkinPark333 recently pointed out that on some of our Top importance pages about Children's literature awards there are many redlinks. The three pages with these redlinks are Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, and Carnegie Medal (with 0 existing redlinks in the other top importance award article - Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award). As of this newsletter there are 222 redlinks in those three articles. How many can we as a project create over the next 6 weeks? Could we even do better and see if we could create any that earn a Did You Know or even get it up to Good Article status?

As always feel free to head on over to the project discussion page if you find yourself in need of any help as we work to turn these notable entries on some of our most important articles blue.

Napa leather page rename - talk page issue

Thanks for renaming the "Nappa leather" page to "Napa leather", and for doing a bunch of work to clean up the article! However, I noticed that the talk page (with all of its WikiProject labels) didn't move, and is still tied to the "Nappa" page. I looked into it a bit, but I couldn't figure out the best way to rename the "Nappa" talk page to "Napa", since there is already a "Napa" talk page. Could you help straighten this out? Alternatively, would the best solution be to manually add the WikiProject labels to the "Napa" page? Thank you! - Heddles (talk) 00:14, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Julian W. Lucas Deletion

Hello,

I'm looking to rework a page that was deleted for Julian W. Lucas I believe it was wrongfully deleted so I'm working with other users to write it so it can be successfully published. I reached out to a couple people with regards to this matter. I'm just trying to figure this all out and I saw that your name was associated with the deletion. I wrote this article as Julian W. Lucas is one of the few professional disabled models out there and I believe it is necessary that he has a wikipedia page for others within the disabled community and more to be able to access. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Zenwexler (talk) 16:10, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you so much! Do you know when it will appear in my userspace? Can you also please point out some of the main issues that need to be rewritten or deleted all together? If that's not your role I totally understand. You just seem really nice so I figured I'd ask. I have no true conflict of interest, but I am someone who is also disabled. So I just want to make sure I do an appropriate job. Thank you so much for your help and all that you do for wikipedia

Zenwexler (talk) 16:53, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey Readerofthepack! Not sure if we keep talking here or on the other page. So I'll just copy what I wrote there. I'm not sure if you get notified of my replies to you since it's technically on my page.

Wow. This is so great. I'm genuinely blown away by your kindness. So I want to add a source for the music video for rescue me. But I can't find any official source outside of the wikipedia page for the song, the imdb page, and of course the actual music video itself where he is clearly in the video. Would the actual official youtube link to the music video be considered an appropriate source? I have the same issue with his collaboration with Jillian Mercado and Tommy Hilfiger. There's no official source but on Tommy Hilfiger's website you can clearly see the pictures of them together. After getting that cited and with all the great and very, very appreciated changes you've made I'd love to make the page live. And then as time goes on I'll be able to add and cite other stuff and hopefully just let other people add to his page! I just want to do my part and create it and then let other people who can do a much better job then me take it from there :) A total random side note, you've really inspired me to donate more to wiki next time around when asked! Additionally at your advice I was also able to add a couple more sources, one of them being for one of his comedy shows. Zenwexler (talk) 20:16, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey Readerofthepack. I’ve beeb having trouble with the Julian W. Lucas page being flagged. After reworked on it I was confident that it should be enough. Apparently there’s a discussion about whether or not it should be deleted. I find this really frustrating because I can’t seem to convey that Julian W. Lucas is notable. And that having the disability he has in the industry he is in is a big deal. Which is why major brands, comedy theaters, and bands have worked with him. Which is why legitimate verified news outlets have done multiple stories on him. So at this point I don’t really know what to do so I figured I’d just reach out here and maybe get some of your thoughts. Thanks so much! Livewire123 (talk) 03:18, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Norfolk Island Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with 500 points derived mainly from a featured article and two GAs on natural history topics
  • South Carolina Adam Cuerden, with 480 points, a tally built on 16 featured pictures, the result of meticulous restoration work
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist in the last two years, with 306 points from a variety of submissions, mostly related to sport or the State of Washington
  • United States Usernameunique, with 305 points derived from a featured article and two GAs on archaeology and related topics

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Thanks for taking the time to support my recent candidacy at RfA. Just a question...

Hi! I have a question about the article Spider Grandmother. I saw that user Ghostygoo did a lot of work in the article this spring, but Ghostygoo seems to not be editing now. This work was done as a student editor in University of Hawaii at Manoa/Introduction to World Mythology to 1500 CE, and led by you (as Shalor (Wiki Ed)).

I find the arricle interesting, and would like to suggest it as a candidate to the meta project Translation of the week. But the ref #27 is perhaps not a reliable source, and may cause people woting "Oppose". Do you know a source to replace the old one? Or do you know any user who might know?

Thank you so much! :-) // Zquid (talk) 14:14, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

Oops

Just so you know, if you got a notification of me reverting a perfectly good user talk page post of yours, it was a misclick which I have self-reverted. Sorry to be so clumsy. --bonadea contributions talk 10:57, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

What you will.

Hi, ReaderofthePack. Here are a few fairly random thoughts which have followed one another, all started by an incident a little while ago when I came across a message on a talk page which at first appeared to be from some upstart administrator I had never heard of, called "ReaderofthePack". Then I noticed a bit of small print in her signature which not only put me straight on the issue of never having heard of her, but also hit me in the face as being astonishingly similar to a recent change in my signature. "Wow!" I thought, "Two of us doing the same thing!" Perhaps not significant, but interesting. Looking further, I found that the change happened way back in February of last year, and I thought "How can I possibly have not noticed?" I suppose it's a measure of how much less active on Wikipedia I am now than I was: years ago it is almost inconceivable that I wouldn't have noticed much sooner, but my average editing rate this year so far has been about 11% of what it was when I was at my most active. I also see that you say you are not from Tokyo, which I think I had known for quite a while, but for a very long time I assumed you were. That set me wondering "If the Tokyo bit isn't to be trusted, is the Girl bit to be trusted?" so I did some more searching. (Yes, I know, you are wondering if I have nothing better to do with my time.) I found that Shalor (Wiki Ed) has her preferences set to show her as female, but ReaderofthePack doesn't. Perhaps she would like to? No doubt most people will never notice, but I really prefer to be able to refer to other editors as "he" or as "she", rather than something more awkward, such as "she or he", or singular "they", and if they have their sex set in their preferences I can see it right away, rather than searching for the information, or worse still spending time searching for it and not finding it. (I have some script or other which tells me. If you don't have it and would like it, let me know, and I'll check and find out what it is.) (Oh, yes, and I absolutely do not wish to be one of those who see no problem with knowing how to refer to other editors, because you just call them all "he", and that makes life easy.)

OK, so there are my random thoughts generated by seeing your changed signature. Make of them what you will. JBW (talk) Formerly known as JamesBWatson 21:18, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

  • JBW - I've had more people express surprise over my changed username than I can remember! As far as gender goes, I do identify as female but I have to admit that I did change my gender preference setting on my main account when I did the name change. It was kind of an experiment of sorts, to see if I'd get a different reaction with a gender neutral name, so I figured I'd change the gender preference setting just so it didn't give away any hints other than the staff account. It was interesting, as I did see some change in how people responded to me. It's kind of interesting. I did experience some of the obvious things that occur when someone switches from a female username to a neutral gender one, but one thing I did see was that some of the advice I gave wasn't responded to in the same way. People weren't rude or anything in general, but it seemed like people saw the female gendered username as more approachable, possibly due to the sociocultural image of women as nurturers? I'm probably just navel gazing, but it was interesting! In any case, I've switched back to the female gender setting - admittedly I kind of forgot about it over time. Happy First Edit Day!

Bee and Puppycat

Hello - I hope I am doing this right. I have a question about "Bee and Puppycat". I notice you added some character in the past. Could you please add more details on the actor Alexander James Rodriguez, who is the voice of Cardamon. https://beeandpuppycat.fandom.com/wiki/Cardamon. He has a page on Fandom Wiki https://beeandpuppycat.fandom.com/wiki/Alexander_James_Rodriguez but it is in RED as nothing to link back to on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee_and_PuppyCat All the other characters do. Is this something you can do please? Emrmedia2004 (talk) 16:30, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

  • Emrmedia2004 I can try taking a look and see if he has done any other notable roles. It can be kind of tricky when it comes to voice actors, to be honest. Offhand it looks like his biggest role has been Cardamon, so I'm not optimistic about him passing WP:NACTOR - which can honestly be tricky to pass. I've had to really fight for notability for some actors in the past, ones who had multiple starring VA roles in major anime. (by talk reader) @Emrmedia2004: "He is still young and working hard on building that resume" Which is fine. Come back to us in five years when that resume is built and reliable sources have developed content on him. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:44, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

We have opened a scoring discussion on whether the rules and scoring need adjustment. Please have your say. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January.
