Your edits to Myxomatosis

Welcome and thanks for your recent contributions to the myxamotosis article. However, you shouldn't just revert the contributions of other editorsto your preferred verison. Nor should you make edits without reading the article. You have done this in your latest edits, and as a result you have duplicated large amounts of information.

There are a few Wikipedia policies you should familiarise yourself with. The most important are WP:BRD and WP:3RR. In short form, when you make an edit and someone removes it, don't just reinstate it. Instead, start a discussion on the article talk page. If you reinstate the material more than three times, you will be blocked from editing.

As far as your actual edits, they are good, but this is a global English encyclopaedia, not a US encylopaedia. See WP:GLOBAL. The US isn't exceptional and doesn't deserve special mention just for being the US. As a general rule of thumb, if the article couldn't handle material of the same level of detail for all 120 odd nations on the planet, don't add it for the US. IOW, this article clearly wouldn't be readable if we had hundreds of words on the disease in Canada, Mexico, Slovakia, Fiji etc. So unless there is something highly notable about the US, please don't create a US specific section. We have sections on Australia in this article because it is commonly and notably held up as a globally relevant example of succesful biological control. The treatment and spread of the disease in US domestic/feral rabbits isn't particularly differrent from anywhere else on the planet and so isn't obviously notable. That the disease is native to the US is notable and has been retained in the appropriate parts of the article.

Hi Mark,

Sorry if I am a bit clumsy with editing, this is the first time I have tried it. I was in the middle of clarifying some points, and got called away for an hour. I see now that I should not do editing on the live site, but on a word document on by computer so that I can insert the finished product all at once.

I am a veterinarian that works with rabbits. My patients are currently dying from this disease. I was trying to add a section on North America because no one here knows about the disease. It has gotten so much more press in Australia and England! I am certainly not trying to remove content, just add to it. But in reorganizing it I have incurred your wrath I see.

Why can I not add a section on North America? There already exists sections on Australia, New Zealand, England, France, and Ireland. Are we not worthy? I did not put it under the "population control' heading because the disease here is endemic.

Please respond. I do want to add a section on North America, but don't want to be blocked by you.

"Wrath" is a litle melodramatic. Mildy irked perhaps.And I'm not blocking anyone, I'm just an editor like yourself. I'm just trying to provide some advice so you don't get blocked. We need more knowledgable editors, and being given an offical slap on the wrist bythe admins or getting into arguments and unknowingly breaking the rules tends to drive people away.

As far as having a US specific section, as I said above, Wikipedia already has a heavy US bias, and the general rule of thumb is that if an article can't handle similar knformation for 120 other nations, then you shouldn't add it for one country. As already noted above,Australia is inherently different and notable on this subject, which is why it has its own section, and indeed its own national article on rabbits. I personally don't see how the disease in the US is particularly different from the disease in Canada or Fiji or any of 100 other nations. It seems like any US specific material is applicable to every nation where the disease exists. That means it would need to be replicated across separate sections for every nation.

The article already has a section on treatment,and if you have references that suggest that treatment in the US is particularly different and notable,you could drop material in there.

Please note that this is all my opinion. I don't have any more status at Wikipedia than you do. The only diference is that I have been around long enough to learn the rules. If you really think that the disease in the US is sufficently different and notable to deserve its own section in the article, then please make your case on the article's talk page. If you like I will start that section for you. Wikipedia works by consenus, and if you can convince most editors that you are correct, then the material will be added. You might even convince me.

IOW, just becaue I don't think a US section is warranted doesn't mean I'm correct. But we do have rules for how to resolve these disagreemennts, and the first step is always to lay out your case on the talk page. I know this can be annoying and time consuming when you have a real job, but we have millions of editors and the place would be utter chaos without doing that.

PS, if you add a colon before you past messages on talk pages, it indents. If add one more colon than the last editor, it makes the conversation easier to follow

Hi Mark, thanks for teaching me Wikipedia conventions.

The section I wanted to add wss on North America, i.e. Mexico, Canada, and the United States. This area has a unique strain of myxomatosis caused by the Californian myxoma virus; this is different from the South American strains introduced to Europe and Australia. It is the most pathogenic strain of all, causing acute death with few prior symptoms in European rabbits. There is no treatment, and none of these countries have the vaccine. Improving articles

Improving articles, so that rating may be changed from C-class to B-class, or B-class to Good Article, is an admirable goal. I have made thousands of edits to this end in my own field (nutrition), including a few raised to GA. A small point here - good practice is to improve the article, but leave the decision to change the rating to someone else. Otherwise, you are just grading your own work. For B to GA this is a requirement: editors improve articles, and then submit those to the GA review process, which means that a reviewing editor will recommend changes (often scores of changes) before deciding on GA or not. If possible, avoid citing your own work (difficult for experts in their area of expertise), as you may have a conscious or unconscious bias toward one theory over another. Do not add content without references, meaning to come back later with the references, as other editors will not know your intent. Instead, do the work-in-progress in your Sandbox, then copy it into the article. David notMD (talk) 11:36, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Asking other editors to refrain from editing an article is contrary to Wikipedia principles. Basically, no one "owns" an article or pulls rank based on their (self-claimed) expertise. The problem this raises is that generalists are prioritizing adhering to Wikipedia rules while the specialists want to add information they know to be true. So, no original research, no inserting true statements without providing citations, no asking other editors to lay off while you fix stuff. Ech edit has to be a defendable improvement to the article.
