WP:NCH

1. Before I had a sign-in, I posted an image in an article that I photographed myself of an object I owned and posted it to my personal website and placed a request for it to be uploaded to Wikipedia - the way I thought I should according to the instructions. But nothing happened for a long time, then the upload request disappeared from the article (couldn't find it in the deletion log either). So obviously I'm all turned around on what to do if I have an image to contribute. I did find it bewildering to have to choose a copyright method among so many. Can someone point me to a concise guide to posting contributed images on Wikipedia? I mean, maybe I chose the wrong copyright method and made it impossible for you to use it??

• Uploading an image to your personal website doesn't mean Wikipedians will notice it's there. If the picture is one you took yourself, just go ahead and upload it using the "Upload file" link in the menu. The easiest two licenses (permissions you can give for others to use your image) are: GFDL - allowing anyone to use the image for any purpose provided the GFDL rules is followed or a Creative Commons license. With CC you can allow use as long as you are credited or allow use as long as people who use the image share it under the same conditions (or both). - Mgm|^(talk) 09:16, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

2. I see 4 major types of referencing:

referring to something within Wikipedia

referring to something outside, but on the Web

"citation needed"

referring to something outside, but in some other media, besides the Web

Mostly I have trouble with the first 3. What I need is a step by step how-to for each of these. A manual of style - so that when I do them, the look like the Wikipedia style I see in other articles. Believe it or not, I've spent at least 3 hours looking for it so far, in various places, and another hour trying various means in various articles and I still haven't figured it out.

Your question about references is answered in the question below yours at WP:NCH. We certainly have a manual of style, but that's not what you are looking for. Reffering to something within Wikipedia is done through wikification which is covered in the tutorial. Referring to something on the internet outside of Wikipedia for the external links section covered on that same page, doing so to cite the source of a piece of information you add is covered at WP:CITE (if that's too complicated for a newbie like you, just add the link, someone else will format it.) Referring to something in print or video media can again be done using either of the previous two methods using Citation templates as a guide. I recommend you do the Wikipedia:Introduction and Tutorial first so you get an idea on the basics and don't forget to sign your posts on talk pages. - Mgm|^(talk) 09:16, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for all the help! I apologize for forgetting the signage. I remembered about 30 minutes after I shut off my computer. Then I was glad I signed the ordinary way. Originally when I posted the image, I didn't have a log-in so I don't think I could upload pictures. The instructions, the way I read them were to essentially, pick a license, post it somewhere on the 'net, put a link to it in the article, and request that someone "official" upload it, with appropriate comments about its origin. I think I chose CC, and gave my real name.

Doesn't matter. Past is past. If I can upload now, then I'll just have to find the instructions for that and try it again. It just gives me a chance to take a better picture and now I have some pointers for which copyright to choose.
