Arabic transliteration

Howdy Quadell, I've been doing a lot of work with some Arabic names from West African history lately and I'm finding myself somewhat out of my depth when it comes to figuring variants, redirects, and the naming conventions for articles. I came across your work at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Arabic) but it doesn't look like everyone's quite at consensus there yet (though maybe I'm misreading? It's very late here).

If I were to give you a few people's names, would you be able to suggest the best form for them? I'm particularly out to sea on Umar Tall and Seku Amadu, who I've found about twenty variant spellings each for, but even someone like Askia Daoud or Askia Ishaq II , I find myself wondering what spelling of Ishaq is preferable (and creating a lot of redirects in the process.

Image Copyright

I'm pretty new here and want to get some image copyright issues straight and hope you can help me these questions (I've tried to get answers from various articles, but if I've missed the relevant one, please point me towards it):

• I want to do an article on a sculture by Bernini, Apollo and Daphne. Now this is an uncopyrighted artwork, but unlike a 2D artwork, a photo of it can have, at least some, artistic expression - is it covered by Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp?
• Does Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp have any weight outside the US? Is this a problem? If not - just to be clear - I can upload an image of any copyright-exprired painting I find on the internet as long as I attach the PD-art tag?
• Finally, is there an equivalent of 'quoting' in images? Can I, like I can with a copyrighted text, show a part (of a certain size) of an image if it is properly referenced? --Dast 23:11, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Lancet sure dived into the gutter in its rush to publish this in advance of the election, it looks like it wasn't even proof read, nonetheless peer reviewed. Persistant Vandal

I don't know if you've noticed, but there is a vandal that somehow is crashing your user page or filling it with images of you and a graphic image of male genitalia. I've tried to stop him/her when I can, but I don't understand how they can more or less crash your page (I have to revert from the history page since I can't even load the page, if that makes sense). Elephas recki

On what basis do you say that the stuffed elephant in the lobby of the Natural History Museum in DC is an Elephas recki? I've been to that museum dozens of times, and I'm pretty sure I remember reading that that elephant is just a normal African Elephant (L. africana). If it were an E. recki, how would it even be in a state to have been taxidermed, given that the article says that they became extinct at least 1 million years ago? john k 04:32, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

I haven't been to the museum in a while, but I used to go a lot when I was a kid, and I don't remember any Elephas recki information being there back then. I seem to remember them talking about how the speciment was collected in Africa some time ago, by hunting, or whatever. It's clearly the same elephant, too. Very weird indeed, because I'm pretty damned sure there used to be text talking about how it was a Bull African Elephant (African Bull Elephant?). As I said, I've not been there recently, so I don't know what it says at the moment, but it's completely bizarre that they would start saying that a stuffed African Elephant is actually an elephant that became extinct millions of years ago. Further, the specimen is clearly loxodonta (elephas would resemble mammoths and the extant elephas species, elephas maximus, the Asian elephant.)

Muslims hold the Qur'an is more authorative than Hadith in Isnad a criterion is: Questions scholars ask about the isnad (the legitimacy of the hadith) include:

Some reasons for forging Hadith: Many farmers and merchants claimed they sold "Holy cures" (money). Local tradition: Female circumcision, Quote "Circumcision is Fard( فرض ) for males yet Sunnah( سنة ) for females. I read a long study stating the Muhammad never called his own teachings Sunnah and that it is a word used by clergy therfore the Hadith is forged.

So when I said discredit the Qur'an, I meant there is no doubt about its credebility like Hadith which may or may not be forged.(false)

7 Arbitration in the Qur'an Last paragraph: I agree that is what I wrote except for the bits you added. There are no grounds for divorce in Islam when it comes to domestic violence (although an Iranian court has granted one recently on those very grounds). Now Iran is a Shi'a Theocracy, and by his/her own admission a divorce was granted. BTW I still haven't learned how to revert, maybe I need some kind of permission or something.

A complaint from a third party

Request for your aid dealing with actions from a user against Religious, Spiritual and Esoteric articles they are complainig about User:Baphomet. Superstition too is full of contravorsy. I tried the User contributions in the toolbox and it returned nothing. wiki edits returned nothing. my wiki Total edits returned 1114 for example (I think I need to be decorated some more! I'm also working hard on ar:wiki. Basically in Algira provinces in both en: and ar: wiki. one more problem

The Muslim articles are cited in many chronogical methods, BCE , BC, A.H., we need to find a way to standarize the articles, also do you know of a website or software that translate english to Arabic and vice-versa? I can in a hurry translate the entire Wikipedia entirely Arab "junior college Arabic" very fast, I lived 18 yrs in Arab coutries and stick the Arabic editors with brininging it up to "CNN"'s English.

Requested reports for cleanup help

Greetings, Topbanana. I've been doing miscellaneous cleanup work on high-value, low-traffic articles about historic but non-controversial figures. (These articles are prone to have blatant errors uncorrected for long periods of time.) There are two problems that I find are very common, and I thought that a report might be useful to help find them.

1. Often the year of birth will not match the category for birth year, or the year of death will not match the category for death year. This is often because a vandal will alter the birth year, but it sometimes occurs when someone fixes an error in one place but not in other. Could a report be created to list these? I suppose it would look for a "[[xxxx]]" after a "(" but before a "-" or "&ndash;" in the first sentence, that doesn't match a "[[Category:yyyy births]]" somewhere else in the article. And something similar for death years.
2. Often an alias for a person's name will not be a redirect to that article. For instance, the article might start "'''John Doe''' ([[1920]] - [[1999]]), also known as '''John Doh''',. . .", but John Doh might be a red link (or might point to an wholly unrelated article). In other cases, the article may be John Doe, but the article may start "'''John Douglas Doe'''. . .", and the full name may not be a redirect to the article. A report would be helpful in finding these. I suppose it would look for "'''" marks around a phrase that is not the article name and either doesn't have an associated article, or has an article that doesn't link to the page in question.

Hey, Quadell. The above search is probably a bit too fiddly to generate easily. However, might I suggest a simpler and probably as effective report; a list of articles which link to [[Category:yyyy births]], but don't link (anywhere) to [[yyyy]] ? While this might miss some permuations of vandalised dates, it may be just as effective. I'll try and rustle this up in the next few weeks to see how useful it is. - TB 07:48, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

keen eyes on Missing encyclopedic articles/Hot/U

Well spotted, ULS server was a redirect to a non-page! Bird Images copyright tags

You have been tagging a whole slew of bird illustrations with {{unknown}} tags, despite the fact that many of them have links to their actual source, which, in all cases I have seen so far, is well before 1923, making them eligible for the {{PD-US}} tag. I know that tagging the no source images is important, but it is also important that we not delete images needlessly, or create extra work for each other. Also, I thought that it was understood that editors working on the no source images would contact the uploaders, when possible. All of these images were uploaded by a very active editor User:Jimfbleak, who, so far as I can see, has not been contacted. Please, don't lose sight of the whole picture while working at this task!
