FAC

Hey, I saw your article on Tadeusz Kościuszko. A really interesting read and very different from most articles of the posted to FAC. I also nominated an article to FAC that I think would be of interest to you as well. Below is a real quick summary:

Frederick Russell Burnham -- Born on a Sioux Indian reservation in Minnesota in 1861, he moved to the American Southwest and learned scouting from some of the last of the old cowboys and frontiersmen. After the American frontier closed, Burnham moved to Africa, became Chief of Scouts and a major in British Army, taught scouting to Robert Baden-Powell (founder of the Scouting movement), and was decorated for his heroism by King Edward VII without ever giving up his U.S. citizenship.

I hope you you enjoy the article and we could really use your comments. Please take a look at Burnham's FAC and post a your comments. The article now has four supporters and one opposed. The one person who opposed the FAC refuses to provide any actionable items that we can work on and she also refuses to remove her opposed. If you have any suggestions for improving the article, please post your ideas to Burnham's FAC and I will be happy to get to work on your comments promptly. Thanks! Ctatkinson (talk) 10:45, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your helpful insights on the FAC. I'll be working on the issues you raised later today. Ctatkinson (talk) 13:38, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I believe I have addressed your observations with the article. If you have any further ideas, please post to Burnham's FAC. Thanks for your help. Ctatkinson (talk) 23:42, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Wikistress

Helo again, Two months ago you were doing a survey of very active contributors so that the reasons for editors to reduce their contributions could be better understood. I had been lucky enough to contribute without running into controversy and the stress which accompanies it until the last fortnight when one of the articles I have made many contributions to in the past has been taken over by two editors who think they have the right to treat other editors with contempt.Since you have been doing some research on this type of situation perhaps you have some advice to give about this.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 22:29, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice; part way through this dispute I resigned from the whole WikiProject and am unlikely to contribute to it again. I have probably been lucky to have been contributing for so long without getting into a dispute like this. --Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 12:16, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Battle of Warsaw (1831)

Hi there :) Would you care to take a look at the article on Battle of Warsaw (1831)? You reviewed the original version for WP:Poland and decided it failed the B-class criteria. I submitted it for GA review today, it's already a B-class for MilHist. It's still a work in progress as I doubt any native speaker reviewed it so far, but the content should be pretty much stable now. //Halibutt 08:48, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank You Piotrus for the Banstar, it is very kind of You! I have not been online for a while but slowly back to researching more history, hopefully I can add something of interest in the future. Right now, there is very interesting ongoing research in subject "Ostoja" and one more professor joining forces. Some of this fresh research will be published soon and I hope then to add reference to do some changes in art on Ostoja. There is so much to do and sometimes so little time, I will try to help on other subjects related to history if I feel competent enough to do so. Bohdan Pawlowicz stub

Thank you, Piotrus for your support, warm welcome + suggestions and links to the Wikipedia community + how to list. Much appreciated. Bdieu (talk) 16:32, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

I have a question. I have quite a number of newspaper article cutouts I inherited from my grandfather (fortunately he kept the header so I have the name of the publication and date). However, my article is in English and most of these articles are in Polish from newspapers which are no longer published. I'd like to use them in the citations and was wondering whether I could attach a scan of them when possible, the brief notes I have made in English, which sum up the info pertinent to the citation and a link to http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov or other archives where some of these newspapers can be found. Is it possible and if yes, how can this be done? Bdieu (talk) 13:28, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Indented line Answer to you question: It's Bohdan Pawłowicz - but as the article is in English and I do not have the Polish clavier, I did not use it. I have corrected it though. I am away from home and in a cybercafé, pressed for time. I have no idea what is needed to change the page from its current status. If you think it is ready to go and can do it, I would be grateful. If not, I will read the instructions when I get back home. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bdieu (talkcontribs) 15:55, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Our new friend

The latest reviewer on the Kosciuszko FA nomination has brought up a couple of minor issues which needed attention and which I have fixed, but overall, and frankly, I think he's all over the map. He starts off by saying the article is "excellent" and then carries on, at length, about many fuzzy and opinionated items in such serious tones. For example, he feels that mentioning that the 'Targowica Confederates were shocked' doesn't belong in this "excellent" article. He seems highly argumentative and opinionated over things that are not even issues. I fear if we start entertaining all of the fuzzy and perceived issues he has brought up that he will keep the page bogged down in petty and opinionated debate for a long time, given his conjecture on a lot of things. I was all set to tell him so but I figured maybe I had better confer with someone first, and you're it. What say you? -- Gwillhickers 06:15, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

So far no major disputes. Some fixing of things that aren't broke going on. We'll see. Hope I'm wrong about my initial assessment. -- Gwillhickers 08:20, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Help test better mass message delivery

Hi. You're being contacted as you've previously used global message delivery (or its English Wikipedia counterpart). It doesn't feel so great to be spammed, does it? ;-)

For the past few months, Legoktm has built a replacement to the current message delivery system called MassMessage. MassMessage uses a proper user interface form (no more editing a /Spam subpage), works faster (it can complete a large delivery in minutes), and no longer requires being on an access list (any local administrator can use it). In addition, many tiny annoyances with the old system have been addressed. It's a real improvement! :-)

You can test out MassMessage here: testwiki:Special:MassMessage. The biggest difference you'll likely notice is that any input list must use a new {{#target:}} parser function. For example, {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales}} or {{#target:User talk:Jimbo Wales|test2.wikipedia.org}}. For detailed instructions, check out mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage.

If you find any bugs, have suggestions for additional features, or have any other feedback, drop a note at m:Talk:MassMessage. Thanks for spamming! --MZMcBride (talk) 05:21, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Dear Piotrus, I am a bit desperate, I do not understand what is wrong with the contribution. I have made references to all publications we have so far and it is written in my own words. I also do not understand what is meant by Euro-Spam? The German Wikipedia contribution about EUFODOS is online since nearly one year and I have also linked to that. Please shortly reply to me. WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice. Canada Sasata (submissions), Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and New South Wales Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Nazi crimes against the Polish nation

Hi there. Waiting for a GA review of the Battle of Warsaw (1831) I decided to do my very first GA review myself, but stumbled upon a huge problem. The nominated article, Nazi crimes against the Polish nation, seems like a poor-mans-version of World War II crimes in occupied Poland. The latter reads much better, has better structure, more references (and higher-quality sources at that), and generally is what the nominated article should look like. I mentioned that in my GA review, but I'm not sure where do I go from there. Any ideas? //Halibutt 09:02, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

FP 7 Project EUFODOS

Dear Piotrus, please explain what Euro-Spam means. Do you not want reference to EU Programmes and Financing? Regarding your concerns on the general notability guidelines: everything which is published about this project is cited in my contribution. So far we have no more publications. But I have referred to the official EC site http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/policies/space/files/eufodos_en.pdf and to the project website www.eufodos.info. I have also made an interwiki link to the German wikipedia contribution on EUFODOS. This is already online since several month and no such comments. We have made several presentations at major conferences as well. Do you want me to cite this as well? Thanks for a soon reply. Best regards, Stefanie LinserStef (talk) 09:05, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I agree, automated message "from me", it was good work, though I did leave a couple notes about things that really need fixed before FA, preferably sooner. Biggest concern is the one about the bag being sucked out - unless there's another source for that, I'd strongly suggest prefixing that section with "According to", instead of stating it as fact. In fact, I'll do that now.

On the Wikicup front, by the way, I'm finally about to make some progress - I spent pretty much all of September restoring a giant, complete set of images. Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Set: Puck of Pook's Hill is worth 700 points, and is passing. God, that was a lot of work, still, I've been trying to be more completionist about these things, so I'm glad I got the whole thing done.

Probably going to have to go to LoC stuff for a bit, though. Was having some issues with the scanner for a bit, but was able to get around it with rescans. However, I think it's time to replace it. It's my longest-lasting scanner to date, so it's not really unexpected. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:18, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Piotrus, I'm not sure I've said this, but - I can't guarantee the timescale; I'm kind of busy, but once I finish this one old GA review, I intend to work through all your unclaimed GA reviews. And possibly the one someone claimed and then did nothing for two weeks. Adam Cuerden (talk) 07:13, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Could you do me a favour and list everything that needs reviewed in WP:Wikicup/Reviews? Is it just the one unclaimed left, and the one claimed but unreviewed, or are there others? Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:05, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Bohdan Pawłowicz

Thank you Piotr for your explanation. As to the answers you say you are still waiting for , I provided them on this same page some paragraphs above in the BP stub thread. I must confess I find it a bit confusing to follow the thread between user pages.

On Bohdan Pawłowicz submit article process: When I finished editing the article, I clicked on the submit button. However, I noticed it was placed on the wrong page. Later someone moved it and also opened a Project Page next to the sandbox, the function of which I do not understand. Am I expected to copy and paste the article there or should I leave it where it is? What is the purpose of the Project Page? Also, how to I go about creating a new stub for a different subject now that the sandbox is taken and it will take about a month to review? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bdieu (talkcontribs) 13:58, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Piotrus, it has to be failed due to the bare urls as refs, if for nothing else. But you're right about the inadequate referencing: the whole first paragraph has a single reference early on, which satisfies the rule of thumb, but there's so much information after that without any source that I'd definitely withhold approval until it's been rectified. A beer for you!

My condolences on Tadeusz Kościuszko. To have an article sit at FAC for over two months and then get canned really sucks.

(When I was at Monticello, someone asked about the slave quarters and the tour guides went really coy.) Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:40, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

@Hawkeye7Thanks. I can't blame anyone, AGF and all that, plus the edits are helping the article... it is however unfortunate that certain editor's pet ideas took over two months to iron out in the article, sigh. Advice regarding WP:PLACE

Hello! You are one of the contributors who edited the text of this policy, so I'd like to ask your opinion about the way of application of WP:PLACE guideline. More exactly, I tried to apply the general guideline no.2 for at least 3 alternative names, but some editors (all of them being Hungarians who support the keeping in the first phrase of the alternative Hungarian name) are claiming that this is not "a widely accepted approach". Please submit a comment at Talk:Alba Iulia to help us to settle the dispute. Thanks in advance 79.117.183.29 (talk) 06:16, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Notability concerns with Arraiolos meeting

Hi Piotrus, I notice that you've just tagged this article, putting its notability in question. Could you please elaborate a bit more why you think that WP:GNG is not met? This would help me to improve the article so that any converns are ruled out. I had been under the impression that, covering a regular meeting of several heads of state, the article would have some kind of encyclopedic value. Best regards--FoxyOrange (talk) 07:27, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I helped the original creator to get this to the stage where it wasn't a speedy, and indicated some doubts about notability, but I'm no expert on this area. (talk page stalker)I have recommended on the AFD page WP:Articles for deletion/Gwyn Pritchard that it be speedily deleted as a copyright violation in 24 hours unless it is re-written as an acceptable, copyright-free, article which uses reliable sources to demonstrate that this person meets Wikipedia's notability criteria. I also summarily removed all obvious copyright violations from the primary source. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:06, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I didn't forget your request to look at this journal article, it just took me a while to get around doing it :-) Unfortunately, I couldn't find too much to add. Strangely enough, although the journla has an impact factor and is listed in the JCR, it is not listed in the Thomson Reuters master journal list (I searched for ISSN, complete title, or just "Studia"). Given that it is in the JCR, it must be in the Social Sciences Citation Index, those two go together. So I added that to the article. Nevertheless, it's not really a problem that I couldn't find anything more, because having an IF and being in the SSCI show notability without any doubt. --Randykitty (talk) 20:49, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Featured Article Process

Personally I think it's a rather arbitrary and capricious process ... Białystok was a well-written article in better shape than a lot of other FA articles and it was completely savaged and trashed when I put it up for FA review in 2011. I see no motivation for submitting any other articles for FA. Ajh1492 (talk) 06:54, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

We should try to make articles as good as possible. There seems little benefit, per se, to picking up "Featured Article" medals. Nihil novi (talk) 10:50, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
@User:Nihil novi: it's not about medals as about visibility. Featured Articles get 24h Main Page placement, which means ~100+k views. Good Articles, unfortunately, only quality for the same visibility as DYKs (~5-30k views). So there's an incentive to get content Featured, if one wants it to be widely read (and I like to educate the world about Polish history). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:56, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Medals, hardly! It's about consistency in the review process and having something other than tenuous standards that are arbitrarily applied. Other than a front-page view for the article, it's be better to get a number of articles to GA quality. Ajh1492 (talk) 15:26, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Re: Forerunner Saga

Haha, you travel some odd alleys of Wikipedia then :P It's somewhat close to being good to migrate, but I've been holding off because I want to make sure it's pretty much complete before posting. Since the constituent novels are notable and have a lot in common (including a dearth of useful commentary in some areas) my plan was to merge them into a single higher-quality article like I did for The Myst Reader; just want to make sure I'm not obliviating some useful content in the progress (plus the plot section needs a hacking). Thanks for reminding me about it though, I can add it to my todo list--sadly I've had less time for article-work recently, but hopefully that will change soon. Kraków Cloth Hall

hello there, the format I chose was based on the cloth hall in Ypres. Either way I am fine with it, I do wish however that there is some consistency in the naming format. I noticed however that there are a large number of articles that have not been written yet about places in the city, and a lot of information is missing on the ones that do exist, such as the cloth hall. Changed hook

On Template:Did you know nominations/Tomás Menéndez Márquez, you accepted the neutrality of the hook with the word "Indians". I see that it has been changed to "Native Americans" in the queue. I felt that being rescued by "Indians" after being abducted by pirates was more catchy than being rescued by "Native Americans". There is an element here playing off of children's stories. Education newsletter

Hi Piotr, the outreach:Wikipedia Education Program/News (which is designed to have a target audience of professors but is documented on-wiki as well) is only either via email or updated on that page, but I also add all the relevant articles from it to the monthly talk page newsletter Leigh puts together for Wikimedians. You can sign up at m:Global message delivery/Targets/This Month in Education; I use the Global Message Delivery system to deliver Leigh's message to talk pages on the 15th of each month. I still see the two newsletters as having different audiences -- one is more for the global Wikimedian community and has a broad education scope, and one is specifically for professors using Wikipedia as a teaching tool. Obviously, there's some cross-over interest, which is why I add some of the articles from my newsletter to the wiki one. Hope this helps. -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Hello Piotrus, I see that you are quite skilled at writing good articles. I feel that an article I have written may meet GA criteria, but it is a fairly new article (less than a month old) and I'm the primary author (maybe 95% of it). I don't want to make a fool of myself at WP:GAN. Do you think it would be frowned upon for me to submit the article under such circumstances? Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 23:35, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

RE: Thanks for the pointers. I've considered WP:PR but thought the wait would be too long, maybe I'm wrong, I'll give it a go first. But if you don't mind, a quick word of advice... if you have a list of say, artworks, released daily over a month, and the article documents them as a series, would you go into detail about each work or just pick the most noteworthy ones? E.g. the problem being with only a few sentences to say for each piece, sectioning the article day by day would look a bit messy, while including all of them would be hard to navigate. I want to make sure the article is "complete" as GA criteria states. Thanks for your help! — MusikAnimal talk 00:44, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

That was painful ...

That was a very painful event with complete over-reaction and frankly disruptive editing on the part of the reviewer. It's not like citation tags weren't associated with the passages since DAY 1 of the article. The excuse of being overcautious to cover one's own disruptive editing is quite egregious and I'm tempted to open and ANI myself. I'm not surprised that articles like this one are written. I somehow stumbled on to User talk:Tbayer (WMF) talk page and saw the work you've done analyzing research on Wikipedia, it's impressive! For example, I was interested in the study that was done, looking at RfAs and social ties, that's an interesting question. So many .pdfs to read now.

Have you come across works that are more historical, looking at change over time, comparing Wikipedia's early years to how things are done today (today meaning whenever the study was done)? Liz Read! Talk! 04:25, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Re:Proposed deletion of Space colony (Gundam)

Two things:

  • First, remember to sign your posts so I know who left me a message. This was a minor oops, but I do like to keep track of those who ping me for whatever reason. :)
  • Second, I've removed fiction from the justification for proposed deletion of the article on grounds that there was actual physicist research into space habitat in the cylinders, so regardless of whether or not they appear in fiction the proposal and the use of the colonies is in fact entirely based on facts, or if not facts then at a minimum research by people who know what they are talking about. That said, I have no justifiable reason to amend the GNG argument you raise in the proposed deletion. I'd be open to deconstructing the page by moving relevant information to other pages, but I get a feeling that wouldn't be a solution you or others would be particularly keen to pursue, particularly since the material is largely uncited/cited to fictional series and the external links appear to be all dead (which is a little weird since one of them links to the internet archive).

Sad as I am to say it, I'll repeat my affirmation that Wikipedia is not a place where fiction can long dwell, yet I understand that as time and standards shift we must adjust and accept that not everything can move forward with us. To that end then, I'd be open to moving the material elsewhere, and though I am not happy about the loss of the page, if it comes to that, I will not contest the proposed deletion. I do appreciate the fact that you left me a message about the proposed deletion though, as I hate learning that pages I created were axed because the nominator could not be bothered to notify me of the decision to bring a page of mine into the deletion process. TomStar81 (Talk) 00:39, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

It appears that someone else beat me to outsourcing, and added two sources as well. There is a small section on the matter at Universal_Century_technology#Space_colony which summarizes the info in the article you've proposed for deletion. As for as I am concerned, this is good enough for me. As for Wikia, I've saved a copy of the article and I'll add it there if it is determined that they have no relevant page for the material. VisualEditor newsletter for November 2013

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some feature changes, major infrastructure improvements to make the system more stable, dependable and extensible, some minor toolbar improvements, and fixing bugs.

A new form parsing library for language characters in Parsoid caused the corruption of pages containing diacritics for about an hour two weeks ago. Relatively few pages at the English Wikipedia were affected, but this created immediate problems at some other Wikipedias, sometimes affecting several dozen pages. The development teams for Parsoid and VisualEditor apologize for the serious disruption and thank the people who reported this emergency at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback and on the public IRC channel, #mediawiki-visualeditor.

There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Accidental deletion of infoboxes and other items: You now need to press the Delete or ← Backspace key twice to delete a template, reference or image. The first time, the item becomes selected, and the second time, it is removed. The need to press the delete key twice should make it more obvious what you are doing and help avoid accidental removals of infoboxes and similar (bug 55336).
  • Switch from VisualEditor to the wikitext editor: A new feature lets you make a direct, one-way editing interface change, which will preserve your changes without needing to save the page and re-open it in the wikitext editor (bug 50687). It is available in a new menu in the action buttons by the Cancel button (where the "Page Settings" button used to be). Note that this new feature is not currently working in Firefox.
  • Categories and Languages are also now directly available in that menu. The category suggestions drop-down was appearing in the wrong place rather than below its input box, which is now fixed. An incompatibility between VisualEditor and the deployed Parsoid service that prevented editing categories and language links was fixed.
  • File:, Help: and Category: namespaces: VisualEditor was enabled for these namespaces the on all wikis (bug 55968), the Portal: and Viquiprojecte: namespaces on the Catalan Wikipedia (bug 56000), and the Portal: and Book: namespaces on the English Wikipedia (bug 56001).
  • Media item resizing: We improved how files are viewed in a few ways. First, inline media items can now be resized in the same way that has been possible with block ones (like thumbnails) before. When resizing a media item, you can see a live preview of how it will look as you drag it (bug 54298). While you are dragging an image to resize it, we now show a label with the current dimensions (bug 54297). Once you have resized it, we fetch a new, higher resolution image for the media item if necessary (bug 55697). Manual setting of media item sizes in their dialog is nearly complete and should be available next week. If you hold down the ⇧ Shift key whilst resizing an image, it will now snap to a 10 pixel grid instead of the normal free-hand sizing. The media item resize label now is centered while resizing regardless of which tool you use to resize it.
  • Undo and redo: A number of improvements were made to the transactions system which make undoing and redoing more reliable during real-time collaboration (bug 53224).
  • Save dialogue: The save page was re-written to use the same code as all other dialogs (bug 48566), and in the process fixed a number of issues. The save dialog is re-accessible if it loses focus (bug 50722), or if you review a null edit (bug 53313); its checkboxes for minor edit, watch the page, and flagged revisions options now layout much more cleanly (bug 52175), and the tab order of the buttons is now closer to what users will expect (bug 51918). There was a bug in the save dialog that caused it to crash if there was an error in loading the page from Parsoid, which is now fixed.
  • Links to other articles or pages sometimes sent people to invalid pages. VisualEditor now keeps track of the context in which you loaded the page, which lets us fix up links in document to point to the correct place regardless of what entry point you launched the editor from—so the content of pages loaded through /wiki/Foobar?veaction=edit and /w/index.php?title=Foobar&veaction=edit both now have text links that work if triggered (bug 48915).
  • Toolbar links: A bug that caused the toolbar's menus to get shorter or even blank when scrolled down the page in Firefox is now fixed (bug 55343).
  • Numbered external links: VisualEditor now supports Parsoid's changed representation of numbered external links (bug 53505).
  • Removed empty templates: We also fixed an issue that meant that completely empty templates became impossible to interact with inside VisualEditor, as they didn't show up (bug 55810).
  • Mathematics formulae: If you would like to try the experimental LaTeX mathematics tool in VisualEditor, you will need to opt-in to Beta Features. This is currently available on Meta-wiki, Wikimedia Commons, and Mediawiki.org. It will be available on all other Wikimedia sites on 21 November.
  • Browser testing support: If you are interested in technical details, the browser tests were expanded to cover some basic cursor operations, which uncovered an issue in our testing framework that doesn't work with cursoring in Firefox; the Chrome tests continue to fail due to a bug with the welcome message for that part of the testing framework.
  • Load time: VisualEditor now uses content language when fetching Wikipedia:TemplateData information, so reducing bandwidth use, and users on multi-language or multi-script wikis now get TemplateData hinting for templates as they would expect (bug 50888).
  • Reuse of VisualEditor: Work on spinning out the user experience (UX) framework from VisualEditor into oojs-ui, which lets other teams at Wikimedia (like Flow) and gadget authors re-use VisualEditor UX components, is now complete and is being moved to a shared code repository.
  • Support for private wikis: If you maintain a private wiki at home or at work, VisualEditor now supports editing of private wikis, by forwarding the Cookie: HTTP header to Parsoid ($wgVisualEditorParsoidForwardCookies set to true) (bug 44483). (Most private wikis will also need to install Parsoid and node.js, as VisualEditor requires them.)

Looking ahead:

  • VisualEditor will be released to some of the smaller Wikipedias on 02 December 2013. If you are active at one or more smaller Wikipedias where VisualEditor is not yet generally available, please see the list at VisualEditor/Rollouts.
  • Public office hours on IRC to discuss VisualEditor with Product Manager James Forrester will be held on Monday, 2 December, at 1900 UTC and on Tuesday, 3 December, at 0100 UTC. Bring your questions. Logs will be posted on Meta after each office hour completes.
  • In terms of feature improvements, one of the major infrastructure projects affects how inserting characters works, both using your computer's built-in Unicode input systems and through a planned character inserter tool for VisualEditor. The forthcoming rich copying and pasting feature was extended and greater testing is currently being done. Work continues to support the improved reference dialog to quickly add citations based on local templates.

If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) 22:13, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

  1. edit the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

As Korean culture is becoming more famous among the globe, this work was interesting to me and brought me to think much as a member of Korean culture suppliers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OnestarLim (talkcontribs) 08:37, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 12

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Disconfirmed expectancy

Hello,

It seems you "rated" Disconfirmed expectancy as a C-class on the Psychology WikiProject's quality scale, but you didn't leave any reasoning or comments for the rating. I can see that you're a rather significant editor here, and I hope this doesn't come across as rude, but I was relatively certain that this was at the very least B-class nearing GA (perhaps a few edits away in terms of cleaning things up). I don't have a problem with you rating the article as such, if you have some kind of rationale for it. It doesn't really help the editors coming along to improve it to not know what needs to be done to better the article.

Just a general observation, but it also doesn't look like you are well-versed in psychology research (forgive me if I'm wrong), which leads me to believe that your main issues with the article center on accessibility to a general audience, maybe?

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts. Cheers, Adam Blake (talk) 16:51, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Template:WPTECH listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Template:WPTECH. Since you had some involvement with the Template:WPTECH redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). WOSlinker (talk) 11:21, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

West Point

Hey there Piotrus, long time -- no talk to. Been working on the various sections of the Thomas Jefferson page and noticed that in the West Point section there is no mention of Kosciuszko's important involvement. Thought you'd might want to get in there and remedy that. -- Gwillhickers 23:28, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Ród / House

I would suggest to move the articles of Polish noble families from "family" to "House of". (including the categories) - example: "Potocki family" to "House of Potocki", "Sobieski family" to "House of Sobieski" etc.

The translation of "ród" (Ród Potockich) would be "House of" (House of Potocki) and not family (rodzina) - Rodzina Potockich could be a family of peasants or burgesses. "Ród" / "House" suggests immediately a noble family.

What do you think about it?--Sobiepan (talk) 16:47, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

European Young Chemists' Network

Dear,

I noticed that you requested a deletion for that page. I tried to improve this page, yet finding third party references was troublesome. Nonetheless, I would like to ask you to keep this page online. As a young chemist myself, I'm part of this network as a member. And as I'm now at the end of my academic career, I found this network extremely interesting as it provided me additional contacts (joint research, new connections, ...). I'm very lucky that I found this network and I believe other young chemists could benefit as well. Therefore, a page on Wikipedia for this page could help other young chemists to get connected with this network.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gonone2014 (talkcontribs) 18:51, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter • 19 December 2013

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some toolbar improvements, fixing bugs, and improving support for Indic languages as well as other languages with complex characters. The current focus is on improving the reference dialog and expanding the new character inserter tool.

There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Rich copying and pasting is now available. If you copy text from another website, then character formatting and some other HTML attributes are preserved. This means, for example, that if you copy a pre-formatted suggested citation from a source like this, then VisualEditor will preserve the formatting of the title in the citation. Keep in mind that copying the formatting may include formatting that you don't want (like section headings). If you want to paste plain, unformatted text onto a page, then use Control+⇧ Shift+V or ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+V (Mac).
  • Auto-numbered external links like [1] can now be edited just like any other link. However, they cannot be created in VisualEditor easily.
  • Several changes to the toolbar and dialogs have been made, and more are on the way. The toolbar has been simplified with a new drop-down text styles menu and an "insert" menu. Your feedback on the toolbar is wanted here. The transclusion/template dialog has been simplified. If you have enabled mathematical formula editing, then the menu item is now called the formula editor instead of LaTeX.
  • There is a new character inserter, which you can find in the new "insert" menu, with a capital Omega ("Ω"). It's a very basic set of characters. Your feedback on the character inserter is wanted here.
  • Saving the page should seem faster by several seconds now.
  • It is now possible to access VisualEditor by manually editing the URL, even if you are not logged in or have not opted in to VisualEditor normally.  To do so, append ?veaction=edit to the end of the page name.  For example, change https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit to open a random page in VisualEditor.  This is intended to support bug testing across multiple browsers, without requiring editors to login repeatedly.

Looking ahead: The transclusion dialog will see further changes in the coming weeks, with a simple mode for single templates and an advanced mode for more complex transclusions. The new character formatting menu on the toolbar will get an arrow to show that it is a drop-down menu. The reference dialog will be improved, and the Reference item will become a button in the main toolbar, rather than an item in the Insert menu.

If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:41, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
