Managing a conflict of interest

Information icon Hello, Paul.vt42. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the COI guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. GermanJoe (talk) 14:32, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

GermanJoe - appreciate the information. I am in fact associated with this company, though I was unaware of the restriction for making these basic edits to the content here. Is there a shorthand way to request that the edits be accepted through the talk page, or will I need to document each edit within the talk page individually?Paul.vt42 (talk) 14:48, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Paul.vt42, many new editors in such a situation are not fully aware of these guidelines, good-faith mistakes do happen. And some of your edits seem to include reasonably uncontroversial changes - I'll not revert these changes. I have shortened your addition of a product announcement though: it was not based on an independent reliable source and could have been phrased a bit more neutral. For further edits: please clearly disclose your connection to the topic on your user page (as described in WP:COI) and suggest further substantial changes based on independent reliable sources on the article's talkpage. Generally, your suggestions should be reviewed first and then implemented by an uninvolved editor. If you have further questions, I and other editors at WP:Teahouse would be glad to help.
