New pages patrol newsletter

Hello PaleoNeonate,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello PaleoNeonate:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2300 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:49, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Bad reverts

Happy holidays, PaleoNeonate. My plan fell through in an extremely frustrating way. I came very close to bringing about a resource which would have at least reset the discussion regarding the topic where my troubles originated. To a large extent, this was fair and informative, but a few things were confusing. In particular, a mixup between subtopics seemed like too big of a stain, and I couldn't get this fixed.

Nevertheless, I would like to at least get some clear improvements restored in Wikipedia. Since you have edited in these areas, I thought maybe you could take a look at the last eight edits of the account StuckWithBadVersions (talk · contribs). Explanations are given in the edit summaries, and the subsequent reverts had nothing to do with actual content. The Mark Geragos history in particular illustrates how absurd this is, and I'm surprised that one hasn't been fixed.

Also, I didn't do this. I can only guess that something appeared to match, but I know nothing about any such emails or other off-wiki activity. Yes, I was guilty of edit-stalking on Wikipedia, and I regret that, but that in itself does not appear to be grounds for what was done, and due to the linked comment, I would guess that the conclusion that I sent such emails was the main reason for this. But none of this really matters, if we just focus on actual content. 41.203.83.242 (talk) 04:32, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi PaleoNeonate. This seems to be another tedious sockpuppet of Belteshazzar (WP:LTA/BTSZ). I have no idea what this "plan" stuff is/was about but my advice is to deny recognition and not to waste your time on this, whatever it might be. DanielRigal (talk) 22:46, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Daniel. Belteshazzar, he's right and the policy about banning also mentions proxying. But there also is a process to appeal, that may be successful after avoiding evasion long enough. The original account's talk page or the ticket system can be used (WP:APPEAL). I unfortunately don't have as much time as I would like for WP lately, so my replies may be delayed, sorry about that. —PaleoNeonate – 18:45, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
Other users, including an admin, have restored several of my reverted edits, especially to baseball-related articles, and as far as I can tell they haven't been punished or even warned for doing this. You have previously worked on WP:FIXBIAS, at least, so you could judge my edits there. In fact, an admin did restore some of my previous edits to that page, but I can't contact him as his user talk page is extended-confirmed protected (not due to anything I did). Anyway, you seem like a reasonable person, and I'm sorry to bother you. Things would have been different if not for the aforementioned mixup, or perhaps even if this article had been written a bit more carefully. 138.121.24.219 (talk) 21:15, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
The above blocked proxy IP is the globally banned user Belteshazzar. It is very unlikely they would be able to appeal their block. This user stalked myself and another user for nearly 2 years on this website. I reported his on-site stalking behaviour and he was globally banned. His behaviour was completely unethical. The WMF staff are aware about his harassment campaigns. The user has since apologized for the stalking on their proxy IPs but continues to disrupt this website. He's confessed to having serious mental health issues so it is unlikely he will give up disruption of articles. Every week this user has a different proxy. The best thing to do is lock articles they are editing, revert and ignore them. Psychologist Guy (talk) 16:54, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
