Growth team updates #1

Welcome to the first newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth Team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects. We will be starting with Wikipedias, but we hope these changes will benefit every community.

8 ideas we consider: tell us what you think about them!

We are considering new features to build, that could retain new editors in mid-size Wikipedias. We will be testing new ideas in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, and then we'll talk to more communities (yours!) about adopting the ideas that work well.

We have posted the 8 ideas we are considering. We would really appreciate your thoughts and the thoughts from your community. Please share the ideas, and tell us what do you and your community think of those ideas before September 9.

Share your experiences with newcomers

We want to hear about what is working and what is not working for new contributors in your wiki. We also want to hear any reactions, questions, or opinions on our work. Please post on the team’s talk page, in any language!

Learn more about us

You can visit our team page to find out why our team was formed and how we are thinking about new editors, and our project page for detailed updates on the first project we'll work on.

Please don't add people to "by nationality" categories

Thanks for your hard work on Wikipedia. I appreciate it! I noticed that you added Category:Chemical engineers by nationality to Alexander Anim-Mensah with this edit[1]. Please don't add container categories to pages, categories that end in "by nationality" mean that that category contains a all the different Chemical engineering categories for many different nationalities. If the right nationality doesn't exist, you should instead add the page to Category:Chemical engineers. Only good strategy is to look at the category to see what other pages/categories are in it. Mason (talk) 23:10, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I checked all those categories before adding them but to your point when you say I shouldn't add people to by nationality categories what do you mean. If the person is of a certain nationality isn't it prudent to add him there. Owula kpakpo (talk) 01:36, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You should take at look at "Category:Chemical engineers by nationality" again. It has clear instructions at the top: "This is a container category. Due to its scope, it should contain only subcategories." If there isn't a category already for their specific nationality, you should add them to "Category:Chemical engineers" not to "Category:Chemical engineers by nationality". The "by nationality" category is only to hold categories. It's not for people. Mason (talk) 02:06, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Checked it and you are right thanks for the heads up. Owula kpakpo (talk) 10:08, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
