And while I'm writing on my own bathroom wall, here, has anybody considered some sort of Wiki tag that would let one mouseover a link and produce a short definition? So if I'm writing a six page entry on The Wakefield Master, maybe I could write and tag a short definition that might crop up on a mouseover so somebody who encounters the link doesn't have to open the whole article but gets a pop-up short definition... Just dreaming. Might be too cumbersome. Otterswimshome (talk) 16:49, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Short Definitions and the Future Of Wiki Reference Searching

So I've got this idea that would be really easy to implement, I should think.

You're researching on Wikipedia, and you come across a reference to (for example) The Wakefield Master. You sort of need to know who that is to get the gist of the article you're reading, but you really don't need the full six page article right now.

How would it be if you mouse over the link to The Wakefield Master and it pulls up just a short definition? A little box pops up that says, "The name given to an anonymous English playwright of the fifteenth century supposed to have contributed to the English Wakefield Cycle." Ah, now I can get on with reading the article I'm reading on stanzaic forms of the fifteenth century without opening a new window. I didn't need to know more than that.

It's just an idea: it would mean that when we're writing articles, we'd just need to compose and tag something that would exist as a "short definition." Otterswimshome (talk) 16:55, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
