Conflict of Interest editing

Information icon Hello, Mmcgoldrick212. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article Firstsource, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. Melcous (talk) 06:59, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm responding to the message on my talk page about Firstsource which I'm assuming was from you even though you were not logged in at the time you left it? If it wasn't you, no worries and you can ignore the following if you like or take it on board anyway! If it was, thanks for your message.
I added the COI and advert tags after your re-write of the article, so I don't think you can say "other users agreed with the neutrality" of the article when no one else has edited it or commented on it since your edit.
First, as you disclosed on your talk page, you have a WP:COI and so rather than editing the article as you did, it is preferable for you to make suggestions on the talk page.
Secondly, you have added a whole bunch of information that reads as promotional, and some that is unsourced, and other content that is sourced only to the company's website. For example, the list of subsidiaries, the number of employees, the list of products and the whole section on Corporate Social responsibility.
Thirdly, the tone of much of that content is no WP:NPOV but rather reads like it comes straight from the company's website or advertising material, e.g. using jargon such as "productisation", talking about "employee strength", and again the whole section on Corporate Social Responsibility.
Finally, the list of awards you have added is again primarily sourced to the company's own website rather than using third-party sources and there is really no evidence that most of these awards are notable. I considered reverting your edit and removing all these additions and issues, but added the tags instead to give some time for them to be addressed.
Wikipedia articles must be neutral and all content in them verifiable to reliable, secondary sources. When I get a chance, I'll have a look at doing some editing of the article to address some of these issues if no one else has, but as I said, the best thing you can do is discuss this on the article's talk page, and be very clear about wikipedia's conflict of interest policies. Hi Melcous, it was me that left the message, hadn't realized I had forgotten to log in! This is my first edit on Wikipedia and before making any edits I used the IRC Help channel and shared the edits which I would suggest. The member that responded suggested I go ahead with the edits and he would review the content to ensure I had posted what he had expected. Would you suggest I cut some of the productisation and CSR sections down and source external links for the awards section? Michael McGoldrick (talk) 12:43, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi and thanks for your response. No worries - it can be hard to get the hang of things when starting out. One of the best things to do is having a go at editing wikipedia articles that are not related to your own work or life, to learn the ropes and get familiar with the expectations and formatting before also trying to work within the WP:COI guidelines. But yes, I would definitely suggest trimming the products and CSR sections, and making sure what you do leave can be sourced to third-party references and is written using neutral language. With the awards, yes, external references are important, but also basically discerning which awards are actually notable - having a huge list like that just smacks of COI/self-promotion. Generally speaking, if an award is national, or notable enough to have a wikipedia article, it might be ok to include it, but a lot of other 'awards' just aren't encyclopaedic. Let me know if you have more specific questions or would like me to have a look at something specific. Cheers, Melcous (talk) 12:57, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Melcous, will have a look over the next couple of days and revert back to you if I have any questions. Thank you! Michael McGoldrick (talk) 12:59, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
