I'd almost always rather see a rewrite than have to delete something. As to your point about owning the copyright, there is still a problem even when you do. I don't mean your new version - that is actually copyright to you but licensed under Creative Commons CC-BY-SA 3.0 for reuse by anyone anywhere (subject only to acknowledgement). Your other text was copyright to you, but not licensed. Therein lay the problem. We can't include anything that isn't similarly licensed to the rest of Wikipedia, or included as fair use non-free content. The latter only applies to things where there is no possible alternative, as in the image in On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. In the case of text, it hardly ever applies as rewording may be done (as you did). You can't reword an image, but altogether it's a grey area and a minefield as well. The whole copyright business is tricky, and despite being a writer I'm no real expert but still a learner. (I do know what's mine at least...) Anyway, welcome on board.
