03:56:36, 6 March 2018 review of submission by Indaravind

Hello Indaravind, interviews can be cited, but only if it's either a) a really uncontroversial basic fact like when/where he was born or b) you state that the fact is from the subject's own words:

Done - "Rajendran was born in X place in Y year.[cite to inverview]"
Done - "Rajendran states that he is the longest-practicing practitioner of this art.[cite to interview]"
Not done - "Rajendran is the longest-practicing practitioner of this art.[cite to interview]"
Get a useful fact from the interview, add it to the article with a citation, then let me know and I'll approve your draft. But feel free later to add more cites to Tamil language hard-books if you like. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:22, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Reply :

To understand and summarize the final step - I will pickup only the useful fact (such as practicing this art for 50 years as published as a text in that website).

The reason behind the hesitation of putting the Tamil language hard books are

  • They are written by Aasan Rajendran himself
  • They are released from own publication.

I will update and submit the draft with the understanding I have now, hoping to pass through this time. And, many thanks to you as always.

Indaravind (talk) 03:56, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

@Indaravind: Ah, you are quite right that books by the subject himself are WP:Primary sources, so if you were to use them you would have to be explicitly clear "In his 1985 book All About Me, Rajendran states that considers his art to be more about healing than combat." And primary sources should only be cited if it's important to report the subject's own perspective, whereas "claims to fame" require evidence from outside observers. Review request.

Hi Matthews I was have asking if you can re-review the draft Draft:Natasha Salifyanji Kaoma the author of the article is a new Wikipedian on of the 30 that we trained at an edit-thon in Zambia under the wikiwomen.I have made some edits and so since you rejected the first submission am now asking if you can review this one review this one. Thanks Chabota Kanguya (talk) 10:14, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

Done @Icem4k: it was overall in decent shape so I've approved it and done some small cleanup, but your editor needs to fix their citations using Template:Cite news and also they have a lot of typos in the titles of their footnotes, so they need to fix those. Thanks! MatthewVanitas (talk) 04:21, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. Will working start to work on that and I will inform the author too. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 05:10, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Deprod: TeamViewer

Hello, I have deprodded TeamViewer because it has previously survived an AfD. I only did this to comply with policy and have no prejudice against another AfD. Cheers, —KuyaBriBriTalk 19:58, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Article Rejection: Resurrection Roller Girls

In your March 1st rejection of this draft, you stated that "Amateur non-professional teams very rarely qualify for articles, unless they have significant and serious media coverage, and not just in their local area." Which is accurate, and I agree with your assessment entirely.

However, in this case there are many examples on Wikipedia of roller derby leagues with equal notoriety. These include Humboldt Roller Derby, Sonoma County Roller Derby, Bleeding Heartland Roller Derby and a large number of leagues listed under List of roller derby leagues. One of these is a direct competitor to Resurrection Roller Girls, and references them in the article. So allowing an article about others that only have local coverage while denying this one is implicitly favoring one organization over another. Wikipedia pages contribute to web search results and are used for information reference, so there is a real consequence here. That issue is most of why I wanted the article (noting my conflict of interest on the topic).

With that in mind, I'd like some clarification regarding what should be expanded before re-review. Considering that so many articles do not have anything other than local coverage, not including organizational rankings, what should the consistent baseline be for creating these sorts of articles? Does the fact that this sport is made entirely of amateur teams (including the top world champions) modify the considerations? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gentlemanscientist (talkcontribs) 21:04, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello Gentlemanscientist, I will grant this area is out of my expertise, so I'll step back but make a few suggestions:
  • There is some precedent for sports which are purely amateur but still Notable; the main one that jumps to mind is Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland (hurling and Gaelic football) where by design every single player is just part-time and has a day-job, but the championship events draw in like 5% of the entire country to attend the match, and most of the rest to watch it on TV.
  • I would strongly advise you post at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Sports, and start with a good clear title like "What are the requirements for Roller Derby articles?" Though I can't guarantee a lot of folks will have input, there's a good chance you might get some good feedback.
  • If you get good feedback on WPSPORTS, I would suggest that you suggest that whatever y'all conclude be added to Wikipedia:Notability (sports). They have sections for each sport, saying "a player/team that has competed at XYZ level of competition inherently meets Notability". I do not know how Derby is organized, and if there are some national/international events that are significant enough that you can say "if they've been in the Atlantic or Specific Derby Finals, they meet Notablity" or whatever, but again I don't specialize in sports articles.
Sorry I can't help more, but you're doing the exact right thing by discussing the issue, so I suggest taking your question to the experts. I would advise that rather than saying "what do I do about my article?" that you focus on "what do we do with Derby articles in general?" and then use that feedback and apply it yourself to your Draft. Thanks! MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:14, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
@Gentlemanscientist: Before you ask at WPSports, there was a very long discussion about this issue back in 2011. I would read that section at Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(sports)/Archive_10, and mention it when you post to ask at WPSports. And I would suggest that you ask WPSports if you/someone can formalize the criteria so they can be listed at WP:Notability (sports) so AFC reviewers like me have an easier time when the question comes up. MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:21, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much

Hello, I just wanted to show my appreciation for reviewing my article so quickly. Thanks! Crenelator (talk) 01:05, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

@Crenelator: No problem, military history articles have a really high likelihood of being properly formatted and sourced, so when I see them come down the hopper I try to get right on them since they often take under 60 seconds to approve, so an easy win. If you haven't already, I suggest you drop into Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Military History and let them know what you're working on and what you're interested in. It's one of the single most active (and almost definitely most organized) WikiProjects, so they're really helpful for getting feedback, collaborating, etc. MatthewVanitas (talk) 02:18, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

00:05:50, 7 March 2018 review of submission by ChesterLloyd

I am curious as to why this submission was rejected when it reads somewhat similar to the MADD article? Please clarify. ChesterLloyd (talk) 00:05, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @ChesterLloyd: I take it you're referring to Mothers Against Drunk Driving? I checked out that page, and while it's not perfect, it is very different indeed from your draft. While the article does lay out some of MADD's principles, a lot of the article focuses, as we require, on what outside people have said about MADD. It has assessments from groups that rate charities and measure their efficiency, criticism from writers that find flaws with their method, etc.
In contrast, your article is pretty much just an "About Us" page for NSV. Your draft is a page for NSV, not about NSV.
If you have specific questions let me know, but I strongly advise you at least skim WP:Notability (organizations). And bear in mind the 10-second version of our core policies:

Hope this helps, MatthewVanitas (talk) 02:21, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

Thakuri Page

I am incredibly confused as to why you are keeping the Thakuri page very limited in information. Thakuri caste, along with other castes in Nepal, have a very rich and long history. Religion and language are the basic information needed. They are also Khas people and I would like a source of them being of Magar descent. Thakuris certainly do not claim Magar descent and Magar do not claim Thakuris. I think these are very important information. The main thing that sets Thakuri caste apart from similar castes like chhetri is their royal descent, this is a big part in their social status and relevance in Nepal. Please have a look at other wiki pages about various castes in Nepal- they have a very thorough and detailed information. It is a shame the history of the Thakuri caste is purposely being left out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bts2k18RM (talkcontribs) 22:13, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @Bts2k18RM: if you are confused, you very much need to read WP:Verifiability, not truth. No matter how true you believe something to be, you cannot include it unless it is properly sourced. The issue is that I properly sourced the material I added (which you do not like), and you removed it without explanation. And the material you inserted completely lacked any sourcing.
Please see WP:Reliable sources. You cannot cite blogs, Facebook, etc. or any works that are not by a credible author or publisher.
You are completely welcome to contribute to the articles, but you must cite your sources.
If you see other Nepali caste articles which similarly lack sources, feel free to remove any uncited materials. MatthewVanitas (talk) 01:35, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Mattew, You are the reviewer of a page that I am writing on Wiki for Johnny Hachem...you asked for some Independent Sources, and some of the stuff that I have are cut outs from NewsPapers and Magazines which I scanned. Can we use these are Independent References ?

Here are a couple of samples :

CrissGib (talk) 08:51, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @CrissGib:, yes, you can use paper (offline) sources, but you need to very clearly indicate title/author/paper/date as best as you can, so a reader can track down those papers/magazines if needed. See Wikipedia:Offline sources. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:00, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Ok, how do I add blue wikilinks to names? I appreciate the feedback, thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tikvah Meeks (talkcontribs) 04:48, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @Tikvah Meeks: you do it like so [[apple]] --> apple. If you want more details, see WP:Wikilinks. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:24, 11 March 2018 (UTC)
@Tikvah Meeks: you also need to be sure to remove any opinion from the article. So any "unfortunately", "mere", "brutal". Your goal is not to tell the reader how to feel, give them the exact facts that let them decide how to feel. It's like the old writing advice "show, don't tell." Hi there, apologies for taking so long to do anything about this, but we're now working on developing the page. I have question about what counts as an authoritative source. When I clicked on the Find sources: "Regional Democracy" – link in the Submission declined message I found that our source is the fifth ranked google result (for me at least) for the term 'Regional democracy'. The source is the Oxford University politics blog, which is probably one of the most prestigious forums for discussion of new political ideas in the UK. We're proposing that 'regional democracy' in the sense that it is described on the Oxford University politics blog is a new political idea, and should have a wikipedia page as such.

Hello,

I had submitted my article for review on last Dec.

I know the waiting list is long , but I was wondering roughly how long it might take. The reason I ask is the current draft was waiting for review from more than 10 days ago. Any pointers? Below is my article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Alok_Babu_R_aka_(ALL_OK)

Thanks and kind regards...

I will be filling content as necessary and the intent of the page is to provide an information resource page for the Pillar Project as a whole. This is a non profit company and such information will be included, I actually consider that an important point.

Thank you Matt and if there is anything you can suggest please let me know. Take care

Review of submission by Happywren from 8 February 2018

Hello MatthewVanitas. Please tell me what I can improve about the article Draft:Radmin to make it ok with the Wikipedia rules. The article had been presented on Wikipedia for several years, then it was speedy deleted in November, 2017. Now I would like to restore this article because the project is being developed, Radmin has milions users worldwide, moreover another similar products exist on Wikipedia: TeamViewer, Bomgar, they are presented in a similar way. Without Radmin article there will not be full picture about existing remote desktop software products. I tried to remove all descriptive and marketing adjectives and updated the links and referenses. Please advise! Please tell in particular what to improve.

Best regards --Happywren 15:21, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @Happywren:, have you yet read WP:Notability (companies)? If you do, I think you will note that your article simply does not meet the benchmark laid out there.
While you have a lot of footnotes, practically all of them are to the product itself, companies tied to it, PR pieces (which are just self-promotion), etc. The Business.com piece at first looked like it might be a WP:Reliable source, but it appears to be a user-submitted review, not attributed to a specific editorial staffer nor necessarily peer-reviewed or in any way quality-controlled.
If you'll alllow me to be blunt: there's basically nothing in your article currently that gives us any reason to think it needs to be a Wikipedia article. The only reason to publish it would be to promote the company. If this product is getting coverage that meets WP:Notability (companies), by all means include it, but only if it's from Reliable Sources and not the kind of cites it currently has.
Thank you for bringing those two other articles to my attention; they both suffer from the same problems and I have proposed them for deletion, since it would be unfair to hold you to a higher standard and give them a pass. MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:13, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
@Kuyabribri:, @Happywren:, turns out TeamViewer was propose for deletion in 2009 (see past discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/TeamViewer), and on that discussion people concluded it met Notability since it does have a fair amount of serious media coverage. The problem is nobody contributing to the article has bothered to apply said coverage, so rather than delete it, I'm going to take a chainsaw too it and remove everything that isn't sourced to a reliable source, so it will end up being like on paragraph and then a section on how it's used for fraud. Which, note this Happywren, is an example of why a company shouldn't try to advertise on Wikipedia, because for their trouble TeamView will have accomplished an article that's 60% about how their product is used fraudulently, and I'll watchlist it carefully to make sure nobody censors it. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:58, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
Hello @Kuyabribri:, @MatthewVanitas:, thank you for detailed response, appreciate it very much. As for WP:Reliable source - please have a look at the following list - I selected resources, will any of them be ok: [1],[2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. I will search and find more if needed. If you leave Teamviewer please leave Radmin with same edits as well as other remote desktop solutions: Bomgar, Ammyy, Anyplace Control, AnyDesk, Chrome Remote Desktop and others from the Comparison of remote desktop software (from which Radmin was removed after deletion) as none of them meet the WP:Notability (companies) rules. Unless this will be unfair. Happywren 15:35, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Hello @Happywren:, rather than post the links here on my page, please post them on your Draft so other reviewers can see what you have.
Regarding whether other competing articles should be deleted, if you feel you understand the Notability policy you can WP:BEBOLD and just remove any appropriate content (any hype verbiage, list of features with no evidence that outsiders care about them, etc), or if it's unsaveable you can us the code shown at WP:PROD to propose the article be deleted. I won't personally get involved in tracking down Non-Notable tech articles since it isn't my area of specialty nor interest, but any Wikipedian has the power to propose a deletion through WP:PROD, or if the deletion is contested, through WP:AFD. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:35, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

References

Hello @MatthewVanitas: why thеn you are personally interested in Radmin article deletion? With no specific comments on the merits. The article about Radmin deserves more than others to be represented in Wikipedia. Radmin has solid list of referring sources. I'm not for drying up Wikipedia, all these technical articles are of value for Wikipedia and should in no way be removed. You do not have to be a technical expert to understand this. Hi MatthewVanitas, regarding Neha Sharma murder case

Regarding your comment at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Articles_for_creation/Help_desk#12:11:03,_8_March_2018_review_of_submission_by_JusticeNeeded123

This is a sensational murder that took place in the city of Agra and has been widely covered in news media organizations. The investigation is still going on. A lot about it has been discussed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dayalbagh_Educational_Institute and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Dayalbagh. This is not a single event as has been pointed by the reviewer. It is an ongoing case and is being repeatedly covered in prominent media organizations in India. A book about this murder case is also about to be published and a campaign for it can be seen at https://www.ketto.org/fundraiser/theagramurder?source=similar. The article does not contain every detail but I hope in time, the power of Wikipedia's users will make it better. More information can be found at https://www.google.co.in/search?q=नेहा+शर्मा+रेप+मर्डर , however majority of it is in Hindi.

JusticeNeeded123 (talk) 07:25, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @JusticeNeeded123: with the sourcing you currently have, it appears to be mostly from 2013, so doesn't show the extended interest in the case nor any changes in law, policy, culture, as a result of it. Please find sources that back up the impact of this case beyond "person murdered, person went to jail". I'm not saying the case is unimportant to the people involved, or in Agra, but you need to make it more explicitly clear why, for example, a reader in Canada forty years from now would still find this worthy of note.
Please add more current sourcing (in English if possible, but if a fact is only proven in a local-language resource you can cite that) that shows such a longer term notability of the case. MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:54, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Request on 13:30:01, 16 March 2018 for assistance on AfC submission by Timtsaicra

Dear Sir, I want to share the information regarding what is AICRA and what is roll of AICRA and what is it.

Timtsaicra (talk) 13:30, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello Timtsaicra, while it is fine to write an article about AICRA, two main issues:
  • You appear to be involved with AICRA, so you need to read WP:Conflict of interest and put a COI message at the top of the article and on your userpage.
  • You cannot simply just take what AICRA says and copy it. Wikipedia does not care what AICRA says about itself, we care what other people say about AICRA. Please see WP:Independent sources. MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:56, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

16:54:40, 18 March 2018 review of submission by ElCamp

Hello Matthew, I corrected the article's term "community" to "intentional community" — The Camp is not unlike Rock Lodge Club (where we are members) — The Camp isn't a business. Without adding a libertine component, which we're certainly not, it's extremely difficult to monetize a place that meets the values principles and standards of Naturism. Possibly through dues, retreats revenue, and room rentals (200 pesos/night is a touch over $10 US) we might cover operation — it, like Rock Lodge, and other authentic naturist places is not expected to be profitable. It's a gathering place for naturists in this community and a stand for educating about the distinction between non-sexual social naturism, or "ethical naturism" and a somewhat prevailing "playa libra" culture that's at odds with Naturism.

I've been evolving the article's narrative this weekend and perhaps you have suggestions for how I can improve it to not transmit that it's something other than it is?

Thanks in advance, Anthony

ElCamp (talk) 16:54, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @ElCamp: the "advert" tag isn't to imply the draft is about making money, it's to say that the draft appears to be written to promote an organziation/group/cause. And your draft very much reads like a promotional brochure. It has words like "paradisaical", ad-speak like "only steps away", and then a list of accoutrements that only a promotional material would have (even down to square footage).
The problem is you're writing an article for The Camp, but what we need is an article about the camp.
Overall my best advice would be to gather together independent, objective sources like the Clarin and Time articles, and any mentions from books about naturalism (though ideally not from tourist guides), then clear your mind of everything you know about the topic other than that which is in your independent sources and write the article based on them. You should only be citing The Camp itself for extremely basic information like where it is and when it was founded. That aside, Wikipedia only cares what outsiders say, not the subject itself, so if there is a Fact X about The Camp that you think is interesting but nobody other than The Camp has bothered to ever make note of that fact, we probably don't need it here.
To reiterate: an article needs to be about the topic, not for the topic. Does that help explain? MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:26, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Thank you @MatthewVanitas:! I will follow your advice and revise accordingly.

Joy Spear Chief-Morris entry

Hi Matthew - in terms of your comments about the notability of Joy Spear Chief-Morris, her notability ties to her being awarded the Tom Longboat Award, as the best Indigenous athlete in Canada (female)in 2017, not her success in track and field, although obviously her track career is central to her winning this award. The Tom Longboat Award is on Wikipedia, and we are working to populate the chart by having various winners with their own entries. In Canada, we have had a Truth and Reconciliation commission and call to action #87 pushes for more public knowledge about elite aboriginal athletes. This effort on my part (I am spearheading the collecting and easy access and production of elite indigenous athletes from Canada on wikipedia) has resulted in 162 easily accessed entries, which is addressing this call to action. Clearly, Joy is a current award winner who will be linked to this process (see First Nations sportspeople, Metis sportspeople and Canadian Inuit sportspeople) as soon as her entry is accepted. We are ensuring that the contributions of these individuals is publicly available, thereby ensuring that successful and award winning indigenous athletes may receive this recognition, which appropriately provides their information as role models for indigenous and non-indigenous individuals in Canada and abroad. For these reasons Joy is notable and deserving of an entry, not just her track and field level of competition.Vicky Paraschak (talk) 13:35, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Project Tiger Writing Contest

In 2017 – 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India Chapter (WMIN) and user groups from India, are piloting a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program will (a) support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and (b) sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

Phase (a) has been completed, during which active contributors were awarded laptops and internet stipends. Phase (b) will be a contest in which editors will come together and develop a writing contest focused on content gaps. Each month three individual prizes will be awarded to each community based on their contribution for the month. The prizes worth 3,000 INR, 2000 INR, and 1,000 INR, will be awarded to the top contributors for each month. The contest started at March 1, 2018, 0:00, and will end at May 31, 2018, 23:59 (IST). Natasha Salifyanji Kaoma

I don't want to be overly critical and I know AfC is a thankless task, but it is always best to check new articles, such as Natasha Salifyanji Kaoma, for copyvios before accepting them. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:03, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @Cwmhiraeth: is there any automated plugin I can use to help catch those? MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:11, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
This is a link to the tool that I use - Earwig copyvio tool. The pink highlighted areas in the comparisons are what matter, because you often get false positives from quotations and from long organization titles etc. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:21, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello @Vicky Paraschak: I get where you're coming from, but since we don't have a specific policy that Longboat Award winners automatically merit inclusion, you do have to find some way to get her to meet the Notable Track Athletes policy I linked on your draft, or meet the WP:GNG for just generally having a body of coverage about her career. Can you cite any more facts about her to serious media coverage, athletic journals or First Nations publications? This is not at all a slight against FN athletes, it's just that we have to have sources to base the article on, otherwise we can't properly substantiate facts about her, which is unfair to her (and makes it difficult to maintain the accuracy of her article) and unfair to the reader.
Please see what you can find to strengthen the sourcing, and if so add those and click Resubmit. And at very worst let me know and I can move the page to a secure place on your userpages with no deadline so you can re-launch the page as soon as she is in the 2020 Olympics, which is an automatic qualification. MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:15, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
thanks for that guidance Matthew and I appreciate your help in getting her entry considered. We will definitely strength the sourcing in the ways you suggest, and resubmit. I look forward to working with you through this process, take care137.207.72.32 (talk) 13:52, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

@Michael Smith Mugote: did you read the message left in the Pink box at top of your draft? Please read it and let me know if you have follow-up questions. Also, please do not paste entire articles on Talk pages, just link your draft like so Draft:Mathias Kigonya. Also, please make sure you are logged in to your account before posting on Talk pages since otherwise it is difficult to tell who is asking the question, and I have to go look at the page to guess who you might be.
