Australasian Hydrographic Society

Madman, I submitted revised wording to Australasian Hydrographic Society entry several days ago to obviate copyright issue. Copyright breach message is still appearing, how can this be resolved? Regards Rupert Gerritsen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rupert Gerritsen (talkcontribs) 06:44, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I have responded at Talk:Australasian Hydrographic Society. Thanks, — madman 12:43, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I sense you have an essay, or perhaps an opinion piece, in you

I sense you have an essay, or perhaps an opinion piece, in you... perhaps on the subject of bots? If you do, I invite you to Wikipedia:OPDESK as it's been a while since an opinion piece was published by The Signpost. Josh Parris 09:18, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. When I came back from WikiDeath, I was contemplating writing one on the Bot Approvals Group, its history (including an analysis of the three MfDs from my perspective), and its future. Sometime later, I was contemplating writing one on the principles and/or "best practices" of bot operation. So maybe one of these days either or both will spring into existence; at the moment, I don't really have time to write anything but code, and I haven't had time to write much of that either. Thanks for pointing me at Wikipedia:OPDESK; hadn't thought of that venue before. Cheers! — madman 13:57, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
MfDs? Haven't come across that acronym yet...just curious! UOJComm (talk) 01:58, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

madmanbot

is there anything against expanding the BFRA searching for copyvios in userspace? I was patrolling new pages today and find many pages (especially at /sandbox pages) containing copyvios (see my CSD log)? Regards, mabdul 12:17, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm. I suspect there'd be a good amount of resistance to that, as copyvios may be cleaned up before they're moved into article space where they'd get tagged anyway, they're not searchable when they're in userspace (though they may be mirrored) and in my experience tagging anything in userspace makes peoples' heads' explode. I wish I could ask Coren why he explicitly exempted userspace; he may have gotten complaints of his own. But I'll look into it. — madman 12:39, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 20:31, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Clearing copyvio for DYK

Hi Madman. I saw Coren's bot work once before, it is amazing. Thank you for your mirror. Can you please clear William Bodiford of possible copyvio? I moved the bot tag on my talk page to the article talk page. It is a DYK nomination so there is some time sensitivity. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:58, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Alternatively can you tell me please how I can clear this article? I found a duplication detector tool at DYK but it only compares against a known URL. Thank you. -SusanLesch (talk) 16:07, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Regarding Duplication Detector, you can check for blatant violation using this URL but really, the key to cleaning copyright violation is just to read both pages and make sure the Wikipedia article does not follow the Web page in terms of language and structure. I'll take a look at this Monday; unfortunately, work has been extremely busy lately and I can't promise prompt attention to time-sensitive matters. — madman 01:34, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
When you get back here, what did you find? I still find a lot of duplication of two words (I mean how could " Yale University" not show up?) so I need an outside person to make a call. Thanks. -SusanLesch (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
The present revision looks just fine to me; nothing jumps out to me as copyright violation or even particularly close paraphrasing. — madman 15:54, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Great. Thank you, Madman. Feel better soon! -SusanLesch (talk) 18:59, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Turnitin

Would you by chance be available at 3:30pm EST tomorrow (Thursday) for a conference call with some of Turnitin's execs and tech guys? I'm deciding whether or not to have the call this week or next, and your (and others') availability will influence that. Cheers :) Ocaasi t | c 18:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

In general, I work until 4:30 p.m. every day. I could normally step away from my desk for a call such as this, but this week I'm in training. Sorry! madman 19:20, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Just so I can gauge options, would you be interested in a 5:30 call? Turnitin is in California, so that's still during their workday. I haven't heard back from Dcoetzee or Maggie Dennis yet so I can be more flexible. I would have to check to make sure Turnitin could do the later time, but I'll first find out if it would work for you. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 21:32, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, Thursday is the only day of the week that I have a mandatory appointment after work, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Let's see when everyone else can make it and I'll try; I'm probably the least necessary of the attendees. madman 05:34, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
The meeting was pushed back to at least next week at the earliest. I'll try and give you a few days notice and aim for a time after 4:30pm EST. Ocaasi t | c 17:32, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Update, request for your skillz

Hi Madman,

Two things I'd like to discuss. One, I wanted to update you on the Turnitin discussions. I'm still waiting to hear back from the WMF (legal department, etc.) to get the preliminary green light on things. Once that happens there should be a conference call with Turnitin that I'd like you to participate in. I'm guessing it will happen some time in April. Your background, experience, and work with MadmanBot could really be invaluable here, so I definitely want you to be as involved as you like.

On the 'I have a favor to ask' front, I need to mass email the 400 or so users who signed up for free 1-year HighBeam Research accounts (WP:HighBeam). I heard you have some experience in that department. Specifically, each user will receive a random but unique activation code, which is why email is necessary over talk page messages. Is there any chance you could adopt your prior bot work to deliver those emails to users, delivering each one a separate activation code? The timeline for this is mid-april, which is short notice, but I'd be willing to pull as much weight as necessary at WP:BAG, and to push the timeline back if necessary. The alternative if 400 manual emails, which although not impossible, would be nice to automate.

Let me know what you think. I hope all is well with you. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 14:39, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Did contributors provide e-mail addresses when they signed up for the accounts? If so, I could easily write a script to send these messages; they're necessary in order to complete signup. If you want to use Wikipedia's facilities to e-mail the contributors, I'd have to file a BRFA; I imagine it would get fairly speedy approval, but I can't guarantee it. Cheers! — madman 01:39, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Contributors applied but did not give their email addresses, so I would need to use Wikipedia's email facilities. It would be really great to do this, and I'm aiming to have the accounts out by the 16th. That's my deadline, not yours, so if it's not possible on your end, I'll just gather the troops to email manually. But I'd like to give it a shot if BRFA is an option. What would be the next step in pursuing that? Also, I really want to hear your thoughts on Turnitin, whenever you have some time. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 20:06, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
BRFA filed: Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/MadmanBot 15. You may want to watch that page in case there are questions I can't answer. Thanks, — madman 21:17, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
This is how excited I am at the prospect of not having to manually email 450 editors. Thank you!
That's really fantastic. Thanks so much. I will keep an eye on the BRFA. I have two separate pages that you may need, one is the approved editor list, the other is a Google Docs spreadsheet with all of the account activation codes. I can email that link to you. Thanks again! Really awesome. Hopefully it will pass! Ocaasi t | c 23:39, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, can you e-mail that link to me using Special:Emailuser/Madman? Thanks! (Also: Love the image and glad to help.) — madman 02:05, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Emailed. Thanks, Ocaasi t | c 02:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Can you e-mail me a template of what the e-mail should look like? I'm about ready to run the trial. Thanks! — madman 14:06, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Sent. Thanks for doing this so quickly. Just great. Ocaasi t | c 14:30, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Done 407/440 users on Wikipedia:HighBeam/Approved (excluding 3 e-mailed during the trial). I'll get you information as soon as I can regarding which users still need to be contacted (to get an e-mail address) and which codes everyone got. — madman 16:01, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

nowikiemail

  • Awesome job. I will send out talk page notices now, and remind people that they need to have an email address set up to get the code. Thanks so much. Ocaasi t | c 17:32, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Great info. I have updated the list. Worst case, I can do these manually. You don't know how much help you've been. Ocaasi t | c 18:20, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

A few email problems

We're getting some feedback here: Wikipedia:HighBeam/Approved#Approved_but_code_not_received and on my talk page.

  • One person said they got an email but no code in it. Is that possible?
No. If you're referring to Marcus Cyron, he did not get an e-mail from the bot. I think other contributors are confused as to what bot sent the e-mail; Taylornate notes "Got an email for the bot changing my talk page but no code" but the bot did not change anyone's talk page. — madman 13:10, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Several others had an email address but hadn't enabled it to receive messages.
Indeed; that would result in code noemail ("The user has not specified a valid e-mail address, or has chosen not to receive e-mail from other users") above. — madman 13:10, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Is there a way I can update the code spreadsheet so that I can do a few of these manually? Thanks for helping with this. I know the troubleshooting part is less fun. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 22:06, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm working on a report right now and can update the spreadsheet for you if I can get edit access. Thanks! — madman 13:10, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting all this out. Span (talk) 13:06, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I see. People are are confusing the Edwardsbot talk page message with the Wikipedia email. Hmmm. Anyway, you're awesome to go through and respond to each one. I updated the spreadsheet so you can edit it and emailed you the link again just in case. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 13:36, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
The report has been updated with the usernames to whom activation codes belong. I can also add on whether the code was sent successfully or not, if you'd like; I might try to figure that information automatically and do a second run. — madman 19:36, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Awesome. If you want to, it'd be great, but I don't want to wear out my welcome, so I can also add received or not received based on your report above. What's the easiest way to resolve those? I can try manually, or we could just do another bot run. Would it be simple to keep codes associated with the same person to avoid double-sending? Ocaasi t | c 19:45, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Why don't I do another run, since it's been a few days, then add Sent/Not sent to the report so from then on it can be done manually? And I'm treating the association between code and username as "permanent" to avoid errors. — madman 19:55, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and updated the spreadsheet with results from the first try. I think it might be a good idea to send out a group talk page message a day ahead stating, "You must have a wikipedia email address set in your preferences AND it must be enabled". I am noticing a small discrepancy in the numbers. There were 444 accounts in the first run, plus two for the trial, which makes 446. But there were only 443 editors you had entered. Which means 3 weren't sent. Blue Elf is one of them, and I added him. Who are the other two? Ocaasi t | c 20:03, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I have the report from the bot on sent/not sent; it might be better to use that on the spreadsheet. As for the numbers, I'm not sure what you mean. There were 443 accounts in the first run, three had been sent a code already as part of the trial, making 440. Blue Elf changed his entry to the format the bot expected here, meaning now he would be picked up by the bot, but he wasn't for the first run. — madman 20:11, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
The counting mistake I made was not realizing that Josh Parris and MBisanz were also applicants and not just part of the bot trial. So with Blue Elf in, I think we're good. I did have 444 on the list but that was with Jeff Song, who was rejected as a blocked sockpuppet. So, yup, 443, plus 8 non english accounts, is 451, which is where the spreadsheet is at. Take a look at it and we'll go from there. Ocaasi t | c 20:30, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

MadmanBot edit summary

Hi. Would you be able to modify the edit summary that MadmanBot uses when tagging copying from another Wikipedia page? For example, it tagged Russian frigate Pallada with "Tagging possible copyvio of Pallada". The editor was offended (I don't know if the problem was the edit summary or the tag itself) and removed the tag with the comment "delete nonsense". A better edit summary might be "Tagging possible copy of [[Pallada]]", which softens the accusation of "copyvio" and wikilinks the source page. Thanks. Flatscan (talk) 04:24, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

 Donemadman 13:19, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. It doesn't seem to reduce removals. :( I guess the backstop at WP:Suspected copyright violations is necessary. Flatscan (talk) 04:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
It's not really necessary; I was able to keep it down to 24 hours for weeks. Unfortunately, I was really the only volunteer working on that backlog, and now that I'm more busy and coding is taking more of my time, CharlieDelta sometimes works on it but can only do so much to help. I can clear out a day's worth of suspects in an hour or two; unfortunately, I just don't have that hour or two these days. — madman 14:09, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant that MadmanBot's SCV listings backstop the tags, since they are frequently removed. As an apology or quick penance for appearing ungrateful, I skimmed the last two days of SCV for cut-and-paste repairs, but all the internal copies had been redirected or A10'd. Flatscan (talk) 04:11, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
I didn't think you were ungrateful for a moment; I just didn't understand the term backstop vs. backlog. Thanks for taking a look at SCV! Cheers, — madman 12:55, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

I created the above redirect to List of words having different meanings in British and American English and received a warning from your bot.

My redirect was a double, which I corrected to point to List of words having different meanings in British and American English: A–L, but I'm puzzled why the bot spoke up at all. — Robert Greer (talk) 16:28, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

The bot notes when a new page seems to be a substantial copy of another page in case a cut-and-paste move or an unattributed content split has been performed. However, I see from this that it should not tag redirects; either that or it needs to have a greater threshold for "substantial" copies. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. — madman 16:36, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
You are welcome, and thank you for running a most useful bot! — Robert Greer (talk) 17:41, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Whitelist for copy-detection bot

http://countrystudies.us/ contains public domain content by the US government - no need to tag articles matching this site. Thanks, Calliopejen1 (talk) 00:12, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Added to Known U.S. Government sites. Thanks, — madman 13:25, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

This was not a copyright violation by wikipedia. The law site had actually copied the text from wikipedia, which they acknowledged on their page. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:22, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

I understand; however, the bot had no way of knowing that. That's why human editors follow up on its tags. And in this case, it was worth following up in case a.) the law site (advertisement site, really) is a live mirror of Wikipedia (which is bad) or b.) if Wikipedia content has been cut-and-pasted, in which case page history needs to be fixed in order to credit our contributors and fulfill our licensing requirements. Hope this makes sense. Cheers, — madman 13:28, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

Lorenzo Mariani page

Madman,

I am the creator of the Lorenzo Mariani page. On April 17 you found that this article was based on "copyright-infringing material" and thus not suitable to Wikipedia. But as far as I can see, the originating news source which I used is an online news division of the BBC (British Broadcasting Service).

With respect to "copying" of the BBC text, this article was also published word-for-word by the Prague State Opera: [1], and a major institution like the Prague State Opera would not needlessly engage in copyright infringement. Therefore, the door has been opened for use of this text, since it was already used in its entirety, by the Prague State Opera.

Could you take a look at this again, please? I could be wrong about this...but I believe the BBC source is a valid and accurate one, for the purpose of our Wikipedia project. Thank you, Nelsondenis248 (talk) 23:04, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

The BBC source may indeed be a valid and accurate one, but that doesn't mean we can copy their content in language and structure. That their content is copyrighted is not in dispute; it says so in the footer of their Web page. And the Prague State Opera copies their content (or more likely, is using it with permission) does not give us any license to do the same. Our objective is to build a free encyclopedia, and we can't do so by copying non-free content in this way. Please let me know if this makes sense. Cheers! — madman 13:21, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
I may not have time to re-write the article before the expiration date. If this occurs, at some point in the future I may re-write the article and simultaneously notify you so that you may review it. Unless of course, you or someone can pitch in with a re-write at this time. Thanks again, Nelsondenis248 (talk) 01:36, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
I believe as long as you have a viable work-in-progress at the temporary subpage, a copyright clerk or administrator should re-list the article and not delete it. If it does get deleted, please let me know if you want me to restore it in your userspace so you can reference it, or if you'd like me to look over a new article. I'd normally be happy to help with a rewrite, but I'm not able to spend much time on Wikipedia for a bit due to some medical and personal issues. I'm sorry. madman 02:06, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

HighBeam Round 2

Hi Madman, Sorry for bothering you at the start of your WikiBreak. I had set a date of May 1 for the second round of account codes to be sent out. Is that still possible? If not, we can wait another week. Just give me a heads up if you get a chance. Hope you're well and enjoying your time away. Ocaasi t | c 14:10, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Damn. If I knew that, I suppose I forgot it. I can't guarantee my availability anywhere from April 30th to May 4th or 5th. I will either be completely available or I will be completely offline with no ability to get online, on the phone, or anything. I'm not sure what to do, then; I guess we'll either have to do it earlier (like this weekend, I should be free especially late Saturday and Sunday) or later (the 4th or 5th). Sorry. madman 15:57, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
I can be ready today or tomorrow at the latest. If you can do that before you head off, it would be great. Ocaasi t | c 18:36, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Merry Month of May

Hi Madman, and Madman's bot! You're quite right; The Merry Month of May (poem) "appears to be a substantial copy of http://www.poetry-archive.com/d/the_merry_month_of_may.html". The article has a copy of the text of the poem, which is not under copyright, so will appear to be a copy of any other webpage which also lists the poem's words. Grunners (talk) 12:59, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

You are correct that the poem should be in the public domain and copyright infringement is not an issue; I have no opinion, however, on whether the article may stand on its own in its current state, given context requirements, notability requirements, etc. — madman 02:32, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm told you're the one who looked at this; I'd appreciate your info. I don't know what OTRS holds, basically, so I'm not sure if I need to deal with the image at all as part of a cleanup of a paid editor's edits. (at least 90% of the articles he created are deleted at this point; we're just going through the few that might be salvageable. 86.** IP (talk) 13:27, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

HighBeam

Hi, I was away from the computer for about half of the month of April and didn't have a chance to follow up on my request for access to HighBeam. I never received a code, and it occurs to me now it's probably because I never validated my email account. At the page where users are supposed to leave a message in the event that they never received a login code there's only a section for up to May 1st. Since it's now past that date, does that mean the boat's left port without me? or is it still possible through some means to get the access code? (My email account's now validated.) Thanks for any assistance you can offer.—Biosketch (talk) 17:56, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

We choose a protected area near Parma (Italy), maybe you know, and try to write also the English version of this article. This morning I understand we make a mistake in the title of article Natural instead of Nature and try to correct it. But I create a lot of confusion. Please excuse me and, if is possible, put everything back in order. I'm waiting with faith--Erre68 (talk) 09:46, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I believe you're probably referring to an article that was tagged by MadmanBot (talk · contribs) and then reviewed by a human volunteer; I myself have not edited any articles recently as I've been on Wikibreak. Can you please link to the article in question? Thank you, — madman 02:30, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I suppose someone solved my problem because there isn't the wrong article (Natural Reserve of Ghirardi) anymore.
Thank you so much anyway. Feeling sorry for the trouble --Erre68 (talk) 19:00, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
No problem. madman 02:51, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

flaawless

I would have to say that i removed the duplicate content mad man. When i was editing one of my articles I received this error of duplicate content.Flaawless (talk) 13:46, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

I see that you did so; however, as you probably know, your article was speedily deleted because it was an article about a real person that did not indicate why its subject was important or significant. If you have any further questions about that speedy deletion, you should probably contact JohnCD (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA). MahdiBot

hi my friend.According to this edit from you and this Discussion for requests for approval you denied my request. so I wanted to tell you a few points.

  1. first please read this link.
  2. im run the interwiki.py in the huwiki and fawiki. but and as you know As enwiki the greatest wiki in the wikiworld so for the give interwikilinks to fawiki. the robot use the enwiki and Add and correction the interwikilinks. for this reason my robot has been add interwiki from article in fawiki. however in my view the reject my requests for approval and worst blocked my robot has not based on justice. thanks man/Mahdi.hajiha (talk) 16:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I understand that after you ran pkill, the bot did stop (and that Hellknowz was wrong on that point). But it had kept going for three hours after you said you'd stop it the first time. I'm concerned that from the very beginning, you didn't apparently understand the English Wikipedia's bot policy, or you would have known that you can't run a bot without approval. I'm also concerned that you may not unfortunately be able to meet the high standards of good communication that we expect from bot operators. The denial of your request for approval and the blocking of your bot was in perfect accordance with policy, and you should review policy if you're still unsure of that. Please don't let this discourage you from pursuing a request for approval in the future. However, the fact is that at the moment we have a pretty ridiculous number of interwiki bots, so we can afford to be pretty selective about which ones we'll approve. Please let me know if you have any further questions. — madman 16:51, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
first please read the User_talk:Hellknowz
second im thanks to the answer to this reasonable and respectful.
third if you read the usertalk:Hellknowz, what this happened is a mistake. and im knows what i am do. im i read the bot policy (im read beforest the botploicy in my home wiki fa.wikipedia).Unfortunately,im like it or not this discourage pursuing a request:(.but im try is not mostly happened./--Mahdi.hajiha (talk) 17:20, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I responded above to the thread at User talk:Hellknowz. Please review my response. In order to operate a bot, you need to be able to understand any and all objections to how your bot is running, and the mistake in question was not the only objection. Thanks, — madman 17:31, 11 May 2012 (UTC) Also, the bot policy on your home wiki does not apply here. This is the bot policy you need to adhere to in order to run a bot on this wiki. — madman 17:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
im sorry my friend but i not seen any edit in the User talk:Hellknowz. the second part of your talk:ok im read it. mean im had read it.
however What should I do to unblock my robot and next step im give flag in enwiki?/thanks--Mahdi.hajiha (talk) 07:46, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
If you were to submit a request for approval in the future, your bot would be unblocked if approved for trial. But I don't think any request for approval in the near future is likely to be considered favorably. The bot policy is pretty clear that to operate an interwiki bot, you must be familiar with the language from which/to which you are linking, and in general, you must be able to meet high standards for communication. This may not be possible at this time, and for that I'm truly sorry. This is not intended to reflect on you personally, and I hope you will consider contributing to the English Wikipedia in other ways. — madman 07:57, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
im not understand. im read this line to line, and where i have make a mistake? You said three times read the bot policy and i do it. where is the problem?? im not need the contributing to the english wikipedia not this way or another way also wikipedia world. im take a good answer, very good answer!!!!!/--Mahdi.hajiha (talk) 09:09, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
"Bot operators should take care in the design of communications, and ensure that they will be able to meet any inquiries resulting from the bot's operation cordially, promptly, and appropriately." So far you have not been able to do so. — madman 19:23, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Scansion markup

Hello, madman. I apologize if this is out of your area of interest, but I've observed your recent helpfulness with <poem>, and since no good deed goes unpunished...
I've floated a proposal at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Scansion markup which has gotten no response at all. If it's a bad idea, I can let it go, but I'm too ignorant about technical process around here to have learned anything from this experience. Can you give me a little perspective? Is this not that big a request, and I just have to fish around for a willing and competent conspirator? Is it a big deal that only a few people could manage, or would require approval by a bureaucracy? Is there a better way to proceed? If you think it's worth pursuing, can you recommend anyone who might be willing to help? Thanks much. Phil wink (talk) 04:10, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

I have replied at WP:VPT. I can possibly see if any existing <poem /> instances would be affected by the change, and file a bug on your behalf. It depends on how busy I'm going to be in the coming week. Cheers, — madman 05:21, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm very much obliged. Phil wink (talk) 20:59, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Super-8 T20 Cup

Super-8 T20 Cup, which it appears you cleaned of its copyvio, still has the csb-wikipage tag on it. Is the problem there fully resolved? Monty845 14:50, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Ah. Yes, I noted it had been cleaned by the contributor but the CSB tag was never removed; I have removed it now. Thanks for asking. Cheers! — madman 14:22, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

MadmanBot ok?

MadmanBot hasn't identified any suspected copyright violations in 24 hours, which seems rather unusual, is it still functioning? Monty845 20:18, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Huh. Something's definitely up. I'll look into it. — madman 15:43, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I have cleared up a potential disk quota issue and restarted the bot; it seems to be running correctly, so hopefully we'll see a new report sometime soon. Thank you so much, by the way, for your contributions to Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations. madman 17:10, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

DR bot

Hi Madman, do you think you could have a look over the idea of the DR robot over the next week or two? I'm hoping we can get some idea of it's feasibility soon, and we can take things from there. Regards, Steven Zhang Talk 21:48, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

This has actually recently come off the backburner and is right behind possibly rewriting the bot's SCV task, which is growing increasingly urgent. I downloaded a neural network library, but it was too big for my quota on the Toolserver, so I'll have to play with it on a secondary server. Do recall that I have no AI experience, so I wouldn't expect any results really soon. The process of picking out the data to feed it alone is going to take some time. Cheers, — madman 04:39, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Is it plausible that some early results could be available before Wikimania? I'm doing a bit of a presentation on dispute resolution and would love to have some sort of prototype to announce :-) Steven Zhang Talk 09:34, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm. I think that'd be somewhat plausible unless after a month or so of testing this approach just gets no results. As I said before, it may just be a pipe dream. But I'm going to do my best. madman 18:46, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Shri Manjunatha Swamy

Hey Madman

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Shri Manjunatha Swamy, and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://www.shridharmasthala.org/pages/history.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) MadmanBot (talk) 12:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC) The above msg has been added on talk page so i would like have discussion on this with you. The contents which i copied violated copyright, so i have requested for copyright permission from the owner. if they agree, its good or else we can remove that part of the content and publish the same right. Or is it like you guys have requested for the copyright permission. and this tag will appended till the copyright permission gets settled. Can you please let me know on this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vishwakumarmc (talkcontribs) 15:56, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

If you have requested permission for the content, you should remove it along with the tag until you receive said permission. Please have permission sent to permissions-en at wikimedia.org; it's best if the copyright holder uses an e-mail template such as WP:CONSENT so it's clear they know exactly what they're agreeing to. Please let me know if you have any further questions. — madman 17:08, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Desysoppings

Hope you're having a nice break. Just to let you know that I was about to desysop the next batch of inactive admins, but realised that they were not given the second batch of notifications. I guess if you could pick up where you left off, and normal service will resume. There's a thread for it here. No rush though, of course. WilliamH (talk) 20:36, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Ah, yes, I wanted to give each script one more close look before scheduling it. Will run today. — madman 17:18, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
Notifications have been sent out. I apologize again for the trouble. I've tried running a number of jobs on a schedule and none of them are working whereas they all work manually. Hopefully I'll be able to fix that soon; to say I'm displeased would be an understatement. But in the meantime, I'm active enough to run them manually; it's not a problem. Cheers, — madman 17:28, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

MadmanBot

This diff seems to be broken. T. Canens (talk) 13:25, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I just noticed that. I don't know what MadmanBot was doing there, but I'll find out. Thanks for reverting it! madman 13:27, 6 June 2012 (UTC) And for determining which row should have properly been removed. I'm guessing there's a problem with the sliding offset used to update rows in-place; it's harder than you'd think. I'll make sure this is fixed before the update script is run again. Cheers, — madman 13:30, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm suspecting that it tried to remove Ngb but somehow hit Hiding instead... :) T. Canens (talk) 13:29, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Indef of IPv6 address

You know that if the sockpuppeteer knows how to tunnel, he could just get another tunnel after deleting this existing tunnel, which is why I don't believe 2605:8900:5000:1001:6:0:12C:2 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) should be hardblocked indefinitely.--Jasper Deng (talk) 16:46, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Ah yes, you're right. I was thinking about HE's five tunnel limit which would prevent him from creating tunnels indefinitely, but I forgot existing tunnels could be deleted and reassigned with no delay. That's somewhat unfortunate as it means any short-term block will probably have to be reinstated every time it expires if he doesn't delete the tunnel. But regardless, I'll re-block for two weeks or so in accordance with how other admins are blocking the IPv4 addresses. Thanks for the sanity check! — madman 16:53, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

The latter revision. The previous revision may be deleted if you so wish; the copyright holder and/or sole owner was unavailable for a declaration of consent. — madman 02:49, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Not this week anyway. As I say the copyright on either is ok but there is no reason to keep both and the second one is easier since the uploader could do the declaration. WMC was only involved because he emailed me asking for a pic and I emailed him consent to use the homepage one. Much ado about nothing. --BozMo talk 17:42, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

CorenBot false positives

Hi Madman. I'm a little concerned by the number of false positives that CorenBot is producing. Some of his latest copyvio finds are head scratchers.
