Madman, I submitted revised wording to Australasian Hydrographic Society entry several days ago to obviate copyright issue. Copyright breach message is still appearing, how can this be resolved? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. When I came back from WikiDeath, I was contemplating writing one on the Bot Approvals Group, its history (including an analysis of the three MfDs from my perspective), and its future. Sometime later, I was contemplating writing one on the principles and/or "best practices" of bot operation. So maybe one of these days either or both will spring into existence; at the moment, I don't really have time to write anything but code, and I haven't had time to write much of that either. madmanbot

is there anything against expanding the BFRA searching for copyvios in userspace? I was patrolling new pages today and find many pages (especially at /sandbox pages) containing copyvios (see my CSD log)? Regards, mabdul 12:17, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm. I suspect there'd be a good amount of resistance to that, as copyvios may be cleaned up before they're moved into article space where they'd get tagged anyway, they're not searchable when they're in userspace (though they may be mirrored) and in my experience tagging anything in userspace makes peoples' heads' explode. I wish I could ask Coren why he explicitly exempted userspace; he may have gotten complaints of his own. But I'll look into it. — madman 12:39, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Clearing copyvio for DYK

Hi Madman. I saw Coren's bot work once before, it is amazing. Thank you for your mirror. Can you please clear William Bodiford of possible copyvio? Regarding Duplication Detector, you can check for blatant violation using this URL but really, the key to cleaning copyright violation is just to read both pages and make sure the Wikipedia article does not follow the Web page in terms of language and structure. I'll take a look at this Monday; unfortunately, work has been extremely busy lately and I can't promise prompt attention to time-sensitive matters. — madman 01:34, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Update, request for your skillz

Hi Madman,

Two things I'd like to discuss. One, I wanted to update you on the Turnitin discussions. I'm still waiting to hear back from the WMF (legal department, etc.) to get the preliminary green light on things. Once that happens there should be a conference call with Turnitin that I'd like you to participate in. I'm guessing it will happen some time in April. Your background, experience, and work with MadmanBot could really be invaluable here, so I definitely want you to be as involved as you like.

On the 'I have a favor to ask' front, I need to mass email the 400 or so users who signed up for free 1-year HighBeam Research accounts (WP:HighBeam). I heard you have some experience in that department. Specifically, each user will receive a random but unique activation code, which is why email is necessary over talk page messages. Is there any chance you could adopt your prior bot work to deliver those emails to users, delivering each one a separate activation code? The timeline for this is mid-april, which is short notice, but I'd be willing to pull as much weight as necessary at WP:BAG, and to push the timeline back if necessary. The alternative if 400 manual emails, which although not impossible, would be nice to automate.

Did contributors provide e-mail addresses when they signed up for the accounts? If so, I could easily write a script to send these messages; they're necessary in order to complete signup. If you want to use Wikipedia's facilities to e-mail the contributors, I'd have to file a BRFA; I imagine it would get fairly speedy approval, but I can't guarantee it. Contributors applied but did not give their email addresses, so I would need to use Wikipedia's email facilities. It would be really great to do this, and I'm aiming to have the accounts out by the 16th. That's my deadline, not yours, so if it's not possible on your end, I'll just gather the troops to email manually. But I'd like to give it a shot if BRFA is an option. A few email problems

We're getting some feedback here: Wikipedia:HighBeam/Approved#Approved_but_code_not_received and on my talk page.

  • One person said they got an email but no code in it. Is that possible?
    No. If you're referring to Marcus Cyron, he did not get an e-mail from the bot. I think other contributors are confused as to what bot sent the e-mail; Taylornate notes "Got an email for the bot changing my talk page but no code" but the bot did not change anyone's talk page. — madman 13:10, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Several others had an email address but hadn't enabled it to receive messages.

I've gone ahead and updated the spreadsheet with results from the first try. I think it might be a good idea to send out a group talk page message a day ahead stating, "You must have a wikipedia email address set in your preferences AND it must be enabled". I am noticing a small discrepancy in the numbers. There were 444 accounts in the first run, plus two for the trial, which makes 446. But there were only 443 editors you had entered. Which means 3 weren't sent. Blue Elf is one of them, and I added him. Who are the other two? Ocaasi t | c 20:03, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I have the report from the bot on sent/not sent; it might be better to use that on the spreadsheet. As for the numbers, I'm not sure what you mean. There were 443 accounts in the first run, three had been sent a code already as part of the trial, making 440. The counting mistake I made was not realizing that Josh Parris and MBisanz were also applicants and not just part of the bot trial. So with Blue Elf in, I think we're good. I did have 444 on the list but that was with Jeff Song, who was rejected as a blocked sockpuppet. So, yup, 443, plus 8 non english accounts, is 451, which is where the spreadsheet is at. MadmanBot edit summary

Hi. Would you be able to modify the edit summary that MadmanBot uses when tagging copying from another Wikipedia page? For example, it tagged Russian frigate Pallada with "Tagging possible copyvio of Pallada". The editor was offended (I don't know if the problem was the edit summary or the tag itself) and removed the tag with the comment "delete nonsense". A better edit summary might be "Tagging possible copy of [[Pallada]]", which softens the accusation of "copyvio" and wikilinks the source page. Thanks. Flatscan (talk) 04:24, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

It's not really necessary; I was able to keep it down to 24 hours for weeks. Unfortunately, I was really the only volunteer working on that backlog, and now that I'm more busy and coding is taking more of my time, CharlieDelta sometimes works on it but can only do so much to help. I can clear out a day's worth of suspects in an hour or two; unfortunately, I just don't have that hour or two these days. — madman 14:09, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

As an apology or quick penance for appearing ungrateful, I skimmed the last two days of SCV for cut-and-paste repairs, but all the internal copies had been redirected or A10'd. The bot notes when a new page seems to be a substantial copy of another page in case a cut-and-paste move or an unattributed content split has been performed. However, I see from this that it should not tag redirects; either that or it needs to have a greater threshold for "substantial" copies. Divine right (disambiguation)

I understand; however, the bot had no way of knowing that. That's why human editors follow up on its tags. And in this case, it was worth following up in case a.) the law site (advertisement site, really) is a live mirror of Wikipedia (which is bad) or b.) if Wikipedia content has been cut-and-pasted, in which case page history needs to be fixed in order to credit our contributors and fulfill our licensing requirements. Lorenzo Mariani page

Madman,

I am the creator of the Lorenzo Mariani page. On April 17 you found that this article was based on "copyright-infringing material" and thus not suitable to Wikipedia. But as far as I can see, the originating news source which I used is an online news division of the BBC (British Broadcasting Service).

With respect to "copying" of the BBC text, this article was also published word-for-word by the Prague State Opera: [1], and a major institution like the Prague State Opera would not needlessly engage in copyright infringement. Therefore, the door has been opened for use of this text, since it was already used in its entirety, by the Prague State Opera.

Could you take a look at this again, please? I could be wrong about this...but I believe the BBC source is a valid and accurate one, for the purpose of our Wikipedia project. Thank you, Nelsondenis248 (talk) 23:04, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

The BBC source may indeed be a valid and accurate one, but that doesn't mean we can copy their content in language and structure. That their content is copyrighted is not in dispute; it says so in the footer of their Web page. And the Prague State Opera copies their content (or more likely, is using it with permission) does not give us any license to do the same. Our objective is to build a free encyclopedia, and we can't do so by copying non-free content in this way. Please let me know if this makes sense. Cheers! — madman 13:21, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

HighBeam

Hi, I was away from the computer for about half of the month of April and didn't have a chance to follow up on my request for access to HighBeam. I never received a code, and it occurs to me now it's probably because I never validated my email account. At the page where users are supposed to leave a message in the event that they never received a login code there's only a section for up to May 1st. Since it's now past that date, does that mean the boat's left port without me? or is it still possible through some means to get the access code? (My email account's now validated.) I understand that after you ran pkill, the bot did stop (and that Hellknowz was wrong on that point). But it had kept going for three hours after you said you'd stop it the first time. I'm concerned that from the very beginning, you didn't apparently understand the English Wikipedia's bot policy, or you would have known that you can't run a bot without approval. I'm also concerned that you may not unfortunately be able to meet the high standards of good communication that we expect from bot operators. The denial of your request for approval and the blocking of your bot was in perfect accordance with policy, and you should review policy if you're still unsure of that. Please don't let this discourage you from pursuing a request for approval in the future. However, the fact is that at the moment we have a pretty ridiculous number of interwiki bots, so we can afford to be pretty selective about which ones we'll approve. If you were to submit a request for approval in the future, your bot would be unblocked if approved for trial. But I don't think any request for approval in the near future is likely to be considered favorably. The bot policy is pretty clear that to operate an interwiki bot, you must be familiar with the language from which/to which you are linking, and in general, you must be able to meet high standards for communication. This may not be possible at this time, and for that I'm truly sorry. I've floated a proposal at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Scansion markup which has gotten no response at all. If it's a bad idea, I can let it go, but I'm too ignorant about technical process around here to have learned anything from this experience. Can you give me a little perspective? Is this not that big a request, and I just have to fish around for a willing and competent conspirator? Is it a big deal that only a few people could manage, or would require approval by a bureaucracy? Is there a better way to proceed? This has actually recently come off the backburner and is right behind possibly rewriting the bot's SCV task, which is growing increasingly urgent. I downloaded a neural network library, but it was too big for my quota on the Toolserver, so I'll have to play with it on a secondary server. Do recall that I have no AI experience, so I wouldn't expect any results really soon. The process of picking out the data to feed it alone is going to take some time. I was thinking about HE's five tunnel limit which would prevent him from creating tunnels indefinitely, but I forgot existing tunnels could be deleted and reassigned with no delay. That's somewhat unfortunate as it means any short-term block will probably have to be reinstated every time it expires if he doesn't delete the tunnel.
