this is my sandbox User:LuvkyStar/sandbox LuvkyStar (talk) 14:41, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There's a couple of ways to do this. I typically prefer to use citer.toolforge.org. This yields the following results in the Named reference section:
  • <ref name="q033">{{cite web | last=Keteyi | first=Oluthando | title=Cairo CPT over the moon after bagging first SAMA nomination | website=IOL | date=2023-10-05 | url=https://www.iol.co.za/entertainment/music/local/cairo-cpt-over-the-moon-after-bagging-first-sama-nomination-995e8de9-96de-4d78-ad73-c51e02d64406 | access-date=2024-07-17}}</ref>
  • <ref name="d733">{{cite web | title=What to expect from the 'bigger, bolder' 2024 Splash Festival | website=HeraldLIVE | date=2024-03-28 | url=https://www.heraldlive.co.za/amp/lifestyle/2024-03-28-native-what-to-expect-from-the-bigger-bolder-2024-splash-festival/ | access-date=2024-07-17}}</ref>
I personally like to alter those results. First, I like to change the non-meaningful name to something meaningful, like "Oluthando 2023" for the first & "HeraldLIVE 2024-03-28" for the second. Next I like to take out some of the extraneous spaces, usually converting " | " to " |". But I will note that is my personal preference. Note that this will also work nicely for items archived at https://web.archive.org/, although I find I have to strip the "s" from "https" to produce "http"; I try to remember to replace it when massaging the results. Notify me if you are using citer.toolforge.org to format on of those archived links; there are some other things that typically need doing.
There are other methods that you can find at Help:Citation tools (short cut: WP:CITETOOL).
It looks like VisualEditor did not work for you in producing a automated result. As a last resort, you can always add the citation details manually in VisualEditor. See Help:VisualEditor#Using_standard_cite_templates for how to do this.
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Peaceray (talk) 15:47, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, you should be able to copy-&-paste the above citations right into the article / draft while using VisualEditor, & they will then appear as a footnote. Peaceray (talk) 15:57, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Peaceray wow thank you! this is so helpful, there are some more notable topics which basically uses alot of web archives and I've been wondering how the heck would I cite these sources on those articles because the VisualEditor only does certain websites. but this surely will help me alot now and in the future, I'm still abit confused about how to join a wikiproject, I click the links but not really sure where to go to join a certain project, it would probably be something related to Africa or South africa as that is where I'm from. but everything with time though I will come back to these messages in the near future. I would like to publish my first article and than join a wikiproject afterwards. don't want to clutter myself with too much at once but I'm truly excited about being here! thank you! I will see about adding the appropriate invitations to those WikiProjects here. Peaceray (talk) 21:25, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Peaceray Hi there, thank you for your tireless help. I know it can't be easy sometimes but your contributions and help on Wikipedia surely makes it an easy for someone who is new at editing.
I hope you don't mind one silly question from me today? I know I've been assigned a mentor but since you've already worked on the same article I have I assume good faith that you're more than willing to contribute to the project/article. my question to you is do you think it will be possible to add a notice bar above the "Recent Works" section in the article. A notice that says something like " This section of the article is frequently updated to show relevant recent works, You can contribute by changing or adding to this section".
Something like that I guess, which tells editors that i'll be keeping that section updated frequently and they can help by contributing to that section frequently.. hope this makes sense! gets more complicated the more I think about it lol LuvkyStar (talk) 19:29, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I would place the {{Under construction}} template under the subheading for the section using the following syntax:
{{Under construction |placedby=LuvkyStar |section=yes}}

@Peaceray This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you so much! Peaceray :) and the cite tool works great! i checked it out earlier today.
I know I said one last question lol but I'm just so excited about editing and I just want to go crazy you know I feel like I'm not contributing enough.. so one last question for now I promise... Is there a list or a place I can find more notable topics to write about? that preferably has a filter to limit to a certain Region like mine? if not doesn't matter..
I'm currently searching through news media publications and notable newspapers which also has a Wikipedia page for topics that seem interesting and wide spread but that doesn't have a Wikipedia page yet, so thats way i say i feel im not doing enough for the Project. I would like to contribute much more than just copyedit and the usual suggested edits. although I do enjoy them very much I won't stop doing that just want to do abit more, im interesting in many different topics and genres of articles LuvkyStar (talk) 20:19, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This should keep you busy!
