Oh yeah, sorry about the attempt. My goal was to have the template automatically replace hyphens with minus signs, like the {{DEC}} template. If done correctly it would enable you to type, for example, -3 instead of −3. I noticed it did cause the weird unicode error, but I looked back and couldn't fix the error. I know. What I meant by the previous sentence was that the hyphen in the -3 (which is incorrect) would automatically be replaced with a minus sign (which is correct). Minus HTML symbol

Page move

Hello. I did a page move that I thought would be helpful with a simpler nomenclature per naming conventions. The new (and current) title is P/2006 VW139. After looking at all the links to the former page title and then looking at the infobox I have decided this may not have been a good idea. It seems to be a new page, according to the edit history, which is all I looked at prior to making the move. However, there are a large number of links to the former page title in "What links here".

I am requesting admin help by moving this back [1], and I will seek consensus for a name change on the talk page later. I don't want to cause a disruption to WikiProject Astronomy by having carried out this action. And I apologize to you for not being more careful in this instance. I used this site which takes the coordinates of the system and outputs the constellation that it's in. I didn't cite the source because it's implicit in the coordinates (11 50 15.5527 +02 45 36.472). I wonder how the NGC 1 and NGC 2 absolute magnitudes are calculated?

I tried to recalculate the NGC1 and NGC 2 absolute magnitudes from the apparent magnitudes given in the wiki infoboxes, however does not not give the exace answers. For example, for NGC 1, my calculated absolute magnitude is -20.4 instead of -22.08 using apparent magnitude of 13.65 and distance 64.7 Mpc. From m-M values (From Hubble Flow Distance Modulus of Galactocentric GSR), I got -20.4 also. Just wonder how the absolute magnitude of -22.08 is got here. Any help is very much appreciated. Hi @Cerevisae: your apparent magnitude of -20.4 from the apparent magnitude of 13.65 and 64.7 Mpc seems correct - at least, that's what I got. There are several possible reasons why the number is different:
1. The absolute magnitude of -22.08 might be taking into account interstellar dust (i.e. interstellar extinction), which makes the object appear dimmer than it actually is.
2. The absolute magnitude of -22.08 might be calculated using different starting magnitudes. Perhaps the apparent magnitude was in a different band, like the B magnitude, which is commonly used for galaxies. Or the distance value might have been different.
I prefer to take absolute magnitudes from the literature, even if they may contradict with apparent magnitudes and distances. This is because it might be against Wikipedia's No Original Research policy, but arguably it falls under a routine calculation. In any case, I usually don't bother calculating them. Infobox galaxy

Hello Loooke.

I'm working to improve the astronomical region of Wikipedia. I've seen your edits here and there, thank you for your efforts! You seem like the right person to ask about this. I just added 'Surface brightness' to the infobox galaxy. The 'Surface brightness specify' was broken and nobody used it, ever. The one I added is working just fine but I'm still getting the old 'Surface brightness specify' on the selection field with the sentence (undocumented parameter). There's also another one in there with the same problem called 'credit'. I've tried to fix this by removing them but I can't find their location anywhere on the template.

Since you're very experienced with infoboxes and the like, I'm wondering if you could explain to me how to fix that issue.

@DGSATI: Hi there! I looked at this edit and at the moment, it doesn't seem like there's anything with your edit that would cause any problems. The one thing I could think of is that maybe it just took a while to update, which was why you still saw 'Surface brightness specify'. I'm not sure though.

Looke, it seems I jumped the gun on this one, you're probably right, I think it just took a while to update because the problem just vanished. I freaked out a little because it's a template thousands of pages are using.
