BAM 209 Wiki Reflective Essay December 5, 2023
In my journey through Wikipedia, I have learned to trust the processes and keep an open, receptive, and explorative mind. Maintaining these habits was an overmounting struggle as I remained in a constant state of denial and neglect — denial that this extensive assignment was a mandatory experience, with training modules and worth a staggering midterm grade. Neglectful in that I would stall the process, abandoning the articles and centralizing my efforts to the weekly field notes (complaining about Wikipedia in some two of them). One of the rewarding moments was finding an article that I actually related to; I noticed one of the main reasons I dissuaded myself from completing the Wikiproject was because I was under the impression that we were to find articles specifically pertaining to Black American music/music affiliated articles. Part of my ignorance stemmed from my pessimistic view of the project. Acknowledging all this, I think one of the clever edits I made was in my main work, titled “Angry Black Woman”. I added a few relevant songs to the article as a means of incorporating a study of African American music and how it shapes perception. While I loathe this experience in some of the same ways I did when it wasn’t complete, I have taken on a sense of accomplishment in completing everything that was required, even when I felt it was nearly impossible. Evenmoreso, I learned a very important lesson about life and finishing work of all kinds — I can only do so little, when I expect so much; in order to achieve anything in my life, I cannot treat it like a stranger, but immerse myself in the task so as to exhale in the essence of my worthy contribution.
