Inner Terai Valleys of Nepal

Thanks for your improvements to this article. I did some initial work on this article merging in small and badly written articles and adding some background and links, but found it hard to track down good sources - and obviously perpetuated some errors. It bothers me that there is so little in the English Wikipedia on places like Nepal. I look at the satellite views and see sizable towns, look at the map view and see a blank. Anything you can add would help, even if it is hard to find good published sources. Aymatth2 (talk) 03:13, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a valuable article because the Inner Terai is so different from both the "hills" and the "outer Terai" south of the Siwaliks. You are to be commended for pulling it together. My Peace Corps post was in the hills north of Dang-Deukhuri and I had occasion to pass through both valleys traveling to and from Kathmandu, but invariably along the same few routes. Other PCVs were posted in these valleys so it would be great if they would chime in. Nepalis too whenever they are comfortable enough in English to write orginal prose. Detailed geographical knowledge of Nepal tends to be very local! Yes, it would be good to have articles about all the towns that offer significant resources for travelers etc. LADave (talk) 22:50, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • You asked about Google Earth. I like the sketch maps because they give symbolic information about place names, boundaries etc. that none of the GeoHack sources give. In "remote" places like Nepal (not exactly remote to the people who live there) Google and Microsoft have hardly any detail on towns, roads etc. Check the Google and Microsoft maps for Ibadan, a city of 2.5 million people which apparently has only two roads! At the same time, I really like the GeoHack sources you see when you click on the {{coords}} link because they give satellite views that give so much more information, and the mash-up of satellite and terrain view in Google Earth is fascinating. If you click on the coordinates in each section of the Inner Terai article and then scroll down, you should see a heading called "Applications" that shows Google Earth - at least I do. So a user who has Google Earth on their machine and knows enough to scroll that far can see that view. But it does not jump out. If you can find a way to put a link to a browser view in the article, not replacing but in addition to the sketch map, and labeled something like "Google Earth View", I can't see any reason why not and think it would help.   • A good way to show the locations within Nepal, following on what you have found, which I agree looks a lot better particularly in a sequence like this, is what I have put at the top of this reply - just show the picture and forget the box. I think it works well. You are way ahead of me in figuring out how to define the zoom levels on Geohack. Thanks - you have taught me a new trick with zoomlevel. I can and will use that! Tong La

Hello LADave!

I just noticed the article about Tong La that you have created. I just made a few edits and hope these are fine with you. In particular I changed the altitude of both Tong La (5,200m to 5,150m) and Lalung La (5,214m to 5,050m).

The 3rd edition of the Tibet Handbook gives 5150m for Tong La and 5124m for Lalung La. Other map references give 5153m for Tong La and 5030m for Lalung La (Reise Know How), respectively 5120m for Tong La and 5050m for Lalung La (Gizi). GPS measurement give approximately 5150m and 5050m. Important is that Tong La is certainly higher than Lalung La.

I wonder if the title should not be moved to Tong La (or Thong La), as beside the Tibet Handbook it is not frequently referred to as "Nyalam Tong La". I recently updated the Friendship Highway article, but couldn't find the Tong La article. Now I have inserted the proper link to the article you have created. Hi Pseudois,
5050m for Lalung La squares better with Wikimapia in terrain mode [1] and 5150m for T(h)ong La looks quite reasonable there as well. If these figures correspond better with current publishd sources, it looks like an improvement to me.
I'm not sure how much credence to give to GPS because my personal experience has been a lot of vertical imprecision, as well as complications from different geoids. When I take my GPS to a nearby park in Los Angeles, it usually tells me I'm some meters below sea level!
As for the names, I'm not sure where I saw Nyalung as a prefix. If T(h)ong is descriptive, there could be other passes with the same name. Nyalung would make it clear that we mean the one in Nyalung county, near the namesake town as well. However I didn't try to learn Tibetan while I was nearby (Nepal) and I don't know what Tibetans usually call it.
T and Th are likely to be transliterations of different "letters" in Tibetan script, so it's probably important to determine whether Tong or Thong is better. LADave (talk) 06:45, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again! Here my information about the naming issue:
1) The original name is Yakrushong La, not (Nyalam) T(h)ong La. The most convincing explanation is provided by Gyurme Dorje (not a Tibetan himself, but nevertheless one the most authoritative author on Tibet): "Yakrushong La pass (5150m) [...] is sometimes known as Nyalam Tong La ('pass from which Nyalam is visible'), although the original Tong La pass lies further east on the traditional Dingri-Nyalam trade route. In his book, Victor Chan only mention the original name, although with another spelling (Yarle Shung La)
2) Nowadays the name of Yakrushong La is not widespread, and most local Tibetan will use the name "Tong La", usually without including "Nyalam" (actually Nyalam town cannot be seen from the pass, and the pass does not mark the border of Nyalam County, which spreads on both sides of the pass).
3) About the spelling, I cannot comment much, as we have on one side different transcription/transliteration systems competing between themselves and also competing with the "traditional" English spelling. I think we should rely on authors with strong background in Tibetan studies, and rather discard maps/websites that usually don't pay much attention on spelling issues and usually just copy names from other sources. Here is what I could find:
Yakrushong La (Gyurme Dorje) or Yarle Shung La (Victor Chan) or even Yakri Shungla La (Nepa maps, but they are notorious for their approximate spelling, so I would rather discard them)
Nyalam Tong La (Gyurme Dorje) or Thong La (Gizi map, Reise Know How map) or Tong La (Lonely Planet, but it is not a primary source, they usually copy from somewhere else)
My conclusion is that we should probably keep the original name you gave to the article, adding some info on Yakrushong La, and possibly make a redirect from Tong La (not sure exactly how to do it technically) in order to facilitate a search in case some users look for this pass in WP. Rename sections

I want to rename several sections in the article Geography of Nepal, e.g. Geography of Nepal#The Terai Region to "Terai Region". How do I find all the links to this? I don't want to do this for the whole article, just the one section.

Alternatively, is there some way to update these links automatically?

The good news is that you don't have to update the links in other articles. Have a look at Template:Anchor, which allows links to the old name of a section to keep working. As an example, if you code == {{anchor|The Terai Region}} Terai Region == in Geography of Nepal, then Geography of Nepal#The Terai Region will continue to jump to the Terai section of the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 22:09, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help me

I frequently write out words in Cyrillic or Devanagari and give only rudimentary transliteration, instead of using arcane academic transliteration systems that IMHO are harder to learn than the writing systems themselves and less broadly useful. Especially now that we have Unicode and virtual keyboards!

On the fly I have learned a few templates for warning readers that they will only see nonsense until the appropriate font pages are installed. Here's an example: {{Contains Cyrillic text}} creates the small infobox below right: {{Contains Cyrillic text}} Nevertheless it's hit or miss. There must be variations and entirely new ones that I am unaware of. Is there a comprehensive list or help page for these templates? LADave (talk) 08:49, 17 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Upload .KML/.KMZ file to link to Google Maps etc.?

Is there a way to upload a .KML or .KMZ geographic file to Wikipedia, then provide a link to Google Maps with it active?

I want to provide a zoomable, pan-able map showing different levels of administrative boundaries. Place names too, if Google Maps doesn't already have them. An example where someone has used this in an article would be especially helpful. LADave (talk) 21:55, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What was illogical was the mention of five villages in Nepal in the Byansi section while the introduction made no mention of Nepal, only Uttarakhand.
Now I have sourced the five villages in Nepal. Meanwhile I see there are no sources for the villages in Uttarakhand. Doesn't source it or lose it apply to India too???? LADave (talk) 01:36, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days.
