Edit warring warning

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at Hellenistic philosophy shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.Teishin (talk) 03:53, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:2020s in environmental history requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Edit warring at Hellenistic philosophy

Hello Keepcalmandchill. You've been warned for long term edit warring as a result of the complaint at the edit warring board. The next time you or the other party make a change to Hellenistic philosophy you are risking a block unless you have received a prior consensus for your change on the article talk page. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 19:51, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

EdJohnston, Yes, I have questions. So what if I want to add new content to the page now? How do I seek prior consensus if others don't know what I'm going to add? Do I just post the proposed edits in their entirety to the talk page? What if the only other active editor does not respond? Keepcalmandchill (talk) 02:01, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to add new content to the article, you should describe it on the talk page and then wait for others to give their agreement. If you get no response, consider asking a Wikiproject. Six weeks of edit warring is more than enough. EdJohnston (talk) 03:42, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
EdJohnston, I am confused, which of these restrictions is currently being applied: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Editing_restrictions#Types_of_restrictions ? Why could we not have the 1-revert rule, as that would at least allow new content to be added to the page? How long is this restriction in place for? Keepcalmandchill (talk) 04:17, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is a one-of-a-kind restriction. I am warning you and the other party that any further edits of Hellenistic philosophy that don't have talk page consensus will be regarded as a continuation of your previous edit warring, and may be blockable as such. If you object to this, there are two, more conventional options I could have considered: (a) full protection of Hellenistic philosophy for a month or more, or (b) partial blocks that would prevent both of you from editing the article, but still let you edit the talk page.
It is typical for editors who disagree to open WP:Requests for comment when there is an intractable dispute. The restriction will no longer be needed if you and the other party are able to work out some compromises on the talk page. What is not acceptable is another six weeks of steady reverting of one another's changes to the article. EdJohnston (talk) 04:30, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, it sure is! Keepcalmandchill (talk) 01:17, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, you will probably randomly see me again at some point as I’ve decided to embark on an epic project to improve the See also sections of articles by adding links, then following one of the links and adding more there, and then repeating that process until I’ve run out of pages. We’ll see how long that takes. Keepcalmandchill (talk) 02:17, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, we may find ourselves to be pulling on opposite ends of the rope, then. I sometimes occupy myself reducing "See also" sections by removing links that already occur in the main text or have no direct relationship to the topic, and adding those to the text that belong there (and expanding the main text, if necessary). ◅ Sebastian 10:56, 12 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you think of the 'See also' as a to-do list for article expansion, then perhaps we are pulling in the same direction after all! Keepcalmandchill (talk) 05:49, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Gordon Buzzzzzz

I'm glad you are addressing the issue of the statement about Jimmie Gordon's "Buzzzzzz" in the Garage Rock article. Someone added the statement a while back, and I wasn't really sure what to think about it. I'm not exactly against having the statement in the article, but it seems to be out of place in the spot where it was inserted. The prior statements leading up to it do not say anything about fuzz--they are there to mention core musical influences on garage, such as instrumental rock and surf. Then, suddenly we now have this new statement about a song with fuzz, so it doesn't really fit--as a result the section looses its focus on early chronology.

There are other parts of the article that actually do discuss fuzz, but I wonder if it should be there either--I believe that the Ventures used fuzz in an earlier record. Furthermore, you pointed out in your comments that source presented was inadequate. I think that the statement could certainly be moved to the article about guitar distortion--it seems that would be a better place. Personally, I would not object to removing it in the Garage rock article, and I'm sure that others would agree. Garagepunk66 (talk) 10:45, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to remove it. Quick research showed that Grady Martin invented fuzz already in 1961, two years prior (fun fact: the discovery was thanks to a faulty amp). Distortion (music) has more detail if you want to incorporate it to the article, cheers Keepcalmandchill (talk) 10:57, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Political history of Belarus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://photius.com/countries/belarus/government/belarus_government_prelude_to_independe~677.html, http://countrystudies.us/belarus/39.htm, and https://namecensus.com/reference/country_studies/belarus/GOVERNMENT.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

Note re decade overviews

Hi there. thanks for all your great work on the 2020s decade overviews! looks terrific. just want to let you know about the note below, which i have posted at Talk:2020s in political history

I notice some comments in the edit history for this article, noting that we should try to limit this article from getting too big. I have a suggestion; we should have a separate article for listing election outcomes for specific countries. while this is valuable data, a single election is generally not notable enough in relation to overall history of the decade. Therefore, I will be creating a new article, 2020s in electoral politics. this is where all news and data for election outcomes should go. I hope that's ok. please feel free to comment. thanks. ---Sm8900 (talk) 🌍 14:24, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on List of tallest proposed buildings requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

Peru

WMrapids added fringe material to the intro of 2022 Peruvian self-coup attempt which you fortunately removed, however this isn't the only problem with their edits on Peruvian related articles. At 2022–2023 Peruvian political protests and many related pages they also copied and pasted masses of text as "Background": [1], [2], [3], [4], Juliaca massacre, Ayacucho massacre. Their additions are full of WP:SYNTH. Basically their own original research with a very selective narrative of events and also full of source misrepresentation. The sources they are using to create "Background" for the self-coup and protests are largely older news stories, and WMrapids's own summary of the background to the unrest which they have added to so many articles doesn't correspond that closely to how contemporary sources summarize it. Despite the many issues, many of their additions are still good but there are also many problems too and they have been challenged on these Peruvian related articles, including Pedro Castillo but they don't seem to engage with criticism, often just reverting back without discussion. 2A02:C7D:69B6:4300:F80B:A175:ED6D:3E08 (talk) 21:13, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copying within Wikipedia

You did not identify the source of the material in your edit. It appears to be Albany Congress. Copying within Wikipedia is acceptable but it must be attributed.

This type of edit does get picked up by Copy Patrol and a good edit summary helps to make sure we don't accidentally revert it. However, for future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, linking to the source article and adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved.

While best practices are that attribution should be added to the edit summary at the time the edit is made, the linked article on best practices describes the appropriate steps to add attribution after the fact. I have done so for you this time, but hope you will follow best practices yourself next time.

I've noticed that this guideline is not very well known, even among editors with tens of thousands of edits, so it isn't surprising that I point this out to some veteran editors, but there are some t's that need to be crossed.~~~~ S Philbrick(Talk) 12:36, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
