Hopefully helpful criticism

Hi! Your comments about Wikiproject notification are duly noted. I'd like to ask a few leading questions, though, and here's why: there may be something you can improve in the essay by considering it from a slightly different point of view.

When you write, "I do not have the time," what exactly do you mean? If you do not have the time to seek out people to engage with you in a discussion, why would you attempt to start the discussion at all? Is it possible you really don't want to engage in discussions about these proposed category deletions? If so, that's cool -- no one is forcing you to engage in discussion; your contributions to our encyclopedia will be equally valued if you remain relatively mute. But surely you see that a desire to take unilateral action without prior discussion verges on disregard for WP:CONCENSUS, which is policy? (sdsds - talk) 03:22, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What I mean by I don't have the time: I don't know what wikiprojects exist, and regardless of what some have said, it's not always obvious which ones are interested in any category. To try and figure it out for every discussion I close would take an incredible amount of time. I would, as many do, notify the editor who created the category. All this has nothing to do with "unilateral action without prior discussion". On the contrary. The category has a notice placed on it, and the category is listed at CFD for five days for anyone interested to come and discuss it. However, that's as far as I go. Otherwise, where does it end? Do I notify everyone who ever edited the category? Do I place a notice at the Village Pump? Do I figure out everyone who ever put an article into the category and notify them? Just because I don't notify the world doesn't mean I don't want to engage in discussion. At some point, people have to take responsibility for themselves. --Kbdank71 03:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. It leaves me a little uncertain, though. When you list a category for deletion would you prefer to engage in a discussion about it, or prefer to take action five days later without any words having been exchanged? (sdsds - talk) 07:50, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't list them, that's the thing. I haven't listed a category for deletion in years. But, on the off chance that I feel the need to do so now, I would still stick by what I said. Yes, I would indeed like to have a discussion about it, that's why I list it at CFD, tag the category itself, and notify the creator. If I'm interested in something, I'm going to make damn sure I know about it. For example, if I want to watch a television show, I'm not going to complain to the cable company because they didn't call me to let me know when it was airing after I missed it. I'm going to check my show listings so I don't miss it. That said, if nobody shows up to discuss it, then nobody shows up. Do I prefer that? No. But sometimes that happens. --Kbdank71 13:20, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thank you, that makes good sense! Why not add that bit to the essay, stating that you do prefer to have active discussions? I know readers should assume good faith on your part, and assume you want a discussion, but when reading the essay in its current form it is quite easy to forget that! Good idea. I've added a few more questions to the essay that will hopefully get the point across. --Kbdank71 17:31, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
