igloo

Hi Juliancolton, and thanks for your interest in igloo. Before using the program, please read the following information carefully - failure to do so may result in your test access being revoked.

igloo is a JavaScript-powered, browser-based anti-vandalism tool, which means you do not have to download or install anything on your computer and it will work on multiple operating systems. However, it does mean that the performance relies on that of your browser and it may operate more slowly than downloaded programs. You must have either Mozilla Firefox 3+ or Google Chrome to use igloo, as it is currently incompatible with other browsers.

igloo relies on a system called iglooNet to assist you in finding and reverting vandalism. It is this system that transforms the program from a pretty version of recent changes to an actual anti-vandalism tool. Naturally, this is beyond the power of a client-side program, and igloo will regularly communicate with an external, non-Wikimedia server. Because of things like server logs, and the iglooNet abuse tracker, this may allow your IP address to be attached to your username - something which is otherwise impossible on Wikipedia. If you do not want this to happen, you MUST NOT USE IGLOO.

If you decide that you do want to test igloo, please keep in mind that it not wholly stable, and you may experience problems where it performs an invalid edit, or other unwanted action. If this happens, fix any mistakes you've made, apologise to anyone you've offended, and let me know. I don't take any responsibility for your use of the program - if you aren't willing to fix any errors, don't use it.

igloo is already quite powerful. The following is a simple guide to using the program:

  • The igloo interface is similar to that of other software, including huggle. Recent changes appear on the left, and diffs appear on the right.
  • igloo sorts diffs based on iglooNet data so that edits most likely to be vandalism are displayed first. You can press spacebar to view the top diff, or click on any diff to view it directly.
  • When you find vandalism, press 'Q' or click the revert button to revert the change, and issue a warning to the user. igloo automatically issues the correct warning. It will ignore existing warnings that are more than 5 days old, and restart from the beginning.
  • The iglooNet assertion system tags clean and dirty edits with colour coding - if it suspects an edit is vandalism, it will be flagged as red, and if it believes it to be clean, it will tag it green.
  • At any time, you can re-review diffs you have already seen by pressing backspace or using the icons to move through the diff history.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or other feedback, I'd love to know. If you hate it, and won't be using it again, please let me know why - and I'll remove you from the test whitelist. If you now try and use igloo, you should find that it will allow you to use the program. Thanks, and good luck! Ale_Jrbtalk 18:49, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Just in case

Hi Julian. It may be prudent to at least semi-protect this. I realise the chance of this page getting vandalised by a hit-and-run vandal are fairly slim, but I still think that do to its' nature, it should at least have semi-protection. @Kate (talk) 00:52, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Hey. I noticed you promoted this FL. I'm all for being bold, and I don't entirely disagree with your decision, but I had intended to keep this open for more eyes. Even though there were three supports, TRM, Matthewedwards and Scorpion—all former/current FL directors who have many FL credits and are veteran list writers—had several issues with the article (none supported, and note that TRM said "I'm finding it difficult to agree this is our 'finest work'"), and even after several long reviews, I found many errors in the lead. Now, I don't grudge you at all for this, nor will I revert your action, as I am confident that the list was close to FL quality at the time anyway. However, in the future, if you could consult with me first or stick to closing FLCs that are without a shadow of a doubt ready to be promoted, that would be great. Hope you don't mind my bluntness. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 05:04, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, alright, that's fair. I saw that the discussion had been open for a month and a half and figured that since there were several supports and no outstanding objections, it could be promoted. I'll keep your advice in mind for the future. Thanks for informing me! –Juliancolton | Talk 05:10, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Icebox Radio Theater

Hi,

I'm the artistic director of the Icebox Radio Theater in International Falls, MN. It's just come to my attention that our Wikipedia page has been deleted. I feel the reason given is inaccurate in that we are not a Part-15 radio station, but theatre group creating new and original plays about our region with a growing podcast audience and a presence on American public radio. We did operate a Part-15 transmitter for a time purely for our own listening convenience (Part-15 FM seldom travels more than one city block) But it is hardly our mission.

We are a registered non-profit organization and recipient of three regional grants. We have letters of commendation from the Mayor of International Falls, and currently operate a studio and streaming radio station in the local community center. The streaming station, Icebox Radio, is listed in the iTunes radio directory and is currently the only station online featuring new audio theatre exclusively. We stream many other new audio theater groups in addition to our own content, a service we provide for free.

Would it be possible to reverse our deletion on Wikipedia? If I need to further clarify things, please let me know. Thanks for your time.

Dr. Seuss

Hello, what's up with people vandalizing Dr. Seuss? Just noticed you reverted something. Is this a big problem on his page?Malke 2010 (talk) 00:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Folks get some kind of pleasure out of ruining other people's hard work. I dunno, it's pretty common on high-profile pages. I protected it for a few months, though, so it should quiet down now. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 00:49, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Okay, hope the vandals lose interest. I was planning on adding mention of an interview he gave to a Dartmouth student newspaper, a few years before his death. He also gave a student group money to start another independent newspaper. Thought they'd make nice additions. He was a great guy. Let me know if you need any help with his page.Malke 2010 (talk) 01:24, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julian,

Will you please clarify what part in particular on the page TEDxDubai 2009 was not according to wikipedia policy. Also, is it possible to recreate the page with the recommended changes?

Mmunot (talk) 13:43, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I think the deletion summary fairly comprehensively explains the reasons for which the page was proposed for deletion. Since pages deleted via the WP:PROD system are meant to be uncontroversial, I can either restore the article altogether or move it to your userspace temporarily. Which of these are most acceptable for you? –Juliancolton | Talk 21:28, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Julian, I've read the deletion summary and I am ready to make the necessary changes. Can you please restore the page, I will do the needful asap.

I wish to exercise my "right to vanish". Simply retiring isn't enough - I wish to disassociate myself from Wikipedia entirely. As there is no account deletion facility the best I can do is a name change then retirement. I should be grateful if you would action my request which is in good faith. I really have lost patience with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community, this exchange confirms my feelings. If you wish to block the new username after the name change, please feel free to do so. Engin Saydam deletion

Hi Juliancotton, Guess ı should have written you earlier on Engin, apparently u have deleted the page on the basis of that he is not an entertainer. After 5 albums released in the US over the course of 10 years, and a as a filmmaker with a recent directorial debut after numerous backstage videos shown on FTV Turkey, still not an artist(entertainer)then who is? Happy Holidays —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.54.74.127 (talk) 00:35, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. The reason for the deletion of that page was that it failed WP:ENTERTAINER, which is a type of notability guideline that helps dictate which articles meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. If you can find sufficient evidence that the subject is noteworthy I'll happily reinstate the article. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 01:18, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Overwhelming bad faith

Your closure of the AfD on "List of mainstream films with unsimulated sex" is probably the worst one I have seen in 6 years of experience with AfD (and its predecessors). Not only were the editors opining overwhelmingly on the "Keep" side, but the Keep side gave actual policy arguments, while the few "Delete" votes amounted to absolutely nothing other than WP:IDONTLIKEIT. It seems apparent that, for whatever reason, you don't like the topic, and hence decided to ignore process and consensus. Obviously, this needs to go to deletion review... but I, frankly, feel it rises close to user RfC level, or ANI. LotLE×talk 03:37, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi. First, let me assure you that implying my actions were made out of "bad faith" is not in any way accurate. I've closed thousands of AfDs, of which very few have been overturned. That said, I admit that the discussion was borderline, but I felt that given the circumstances, deletion would be appropriate. I have no personal interest in the topic, and I'm not sure I would have argued for deletion as a "voter". You're free to contest my decision at DRV, but to threaten RfC or ANI is not very reasonable at this point. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 03:41, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm. I can see why most people on WP don't want to get involved in these type of issues. Steve Dufour (talk) 03:51, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
While I agree strongly with your close and its reasoning, and applaud it, I think one portion of your comments was not phrased as well as it might have been. Where you said, "there are sometimes topics which are simply not suitable to be included within Wikipedia," I wish you had said something like "there are sometimes articles addressing notable topics which are simply not suitable to be included within Wikipedia." The difference is small but important; I think an article addressing the same topic which was framed as an essay raher than a list, and was based entirely on secondary sources discussing the films involved in a broader context, would not have been particularly controversial. Hullaballoo Wolfowitz (talk) 04:26, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

You've archived this, though I hadn't replied. Here is the last thing you wrote:

And here is my new reply to it:

But consensus isn't the same as a wafer thin majority. A clear consensus is when there is a clear consensus. There wasn't. You yourself admit that its touch and go about whether its keep or merge. That's the very definition of no consensus. Consensus is not 50% + 1. Newman Luke (talk) 05:10, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I have a bot that automatically archives discussions a few days old. Anyway, I can only tell you that I saw a strong enough consensus to merge to justify specifying so in my closing statement. –Juliancolton | Talk 05:12, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Where? From reading the last part of the discussion or the first part, its clearly evenly split. Consensus isn't 50%+1. Consensus is general agreement, with maybe one or two fringe people disputing it. There was no such thing at that AfD. Newman Luke (talk) 05:16, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
It's not evenly split at all. As the closing admin I determined that the consensus at that particular AfD was to merge, and I can't see any evidence that my decision in this case was incorrect. Consensus isn't a vote count, you're absolutely right, which is why I closed that AfD the way I did. –Juliancolton | Talk 05:17, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi there, You've protected a version of Global warming that includes a rather large recent addition on the whole email hacking incident. I usually wouldn't say anything about this, per WP:WRONG, but (1) the article has had a long-standing focus on the science, not the politics, and (2) the whole section is completely unsourced, which is unacceptable for a featured article. Especially for the second reason, would you please consider reverting to the version by Short Brigade Harvester Boris? I'd rather the protected version not be one that violates its FA status. Hi. The article was deleted in accordance with the proposed deletion policy, which allows for a page to be summarily removed if there are no objections after one week. Looking briefly at the former page, it doesn't seem terribly "spammy" to me, but I think notability might be an issue. Nonetheless, I can restore it if you believe you can address the concerns raised. One more thing, if you're affiliated with the business in question, it's probably a good idea not to write content about it as per COI guidelines. Best, –Juliancolton | Talk 14:03, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Global Warming Page Protected?

At what point will you be updating this page to include new found and substantiated data that the ACRU has manipulated data to support their erroneous conclusions. Much of their data is represented on the GW page. At a minimum, caveats should be placed on all data for the GW article that it is in question. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalel2000 (talkcontribs) 04:54, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

It's generally not considered appropriate to make major edits through full-protection, as it gives admins an unfair advantage should a dispute arise. AfD stuff

Your conclusion about that AfD is bs. 5 delete for 18 keep isn't a consensus for deletion, and if "mainstream" is that subjective then prepare yourself for a dozen other deletions. The truth is that one user had his sensibilities hurt by the article so he butchered it, removing large chunks both sourced and unsourced, then asked for deletion on the dubious pretext that, let me quote, "it would be a crime to hire people to have sex." The whole ordeal smells of bigotry. Marcus1979 (talk) 00:11, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! Unable to resist bacon's temptations, rogue editors have kicked off the Bacon Challenge 2010 before the New Year even starts! This is a fun and collegial event and all are welcome. There are many non-pork articles for editors who enjoy some sizzle, but object to or don't like messing with pig products. This year's event includes a Bacon WikiCup 2010 for those who may want to keep score and enjoy engaging in friendly competition. Given the critical importance of this subject matter, I know you will want to participate, so remember to sign up today and get started A.S.A.P. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:28, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

deletion of oasis disc manufacturing page=

[[User:CD historian| Hello, thank you for all you do... I am so troubled that after extensively refining the page after the last discussions on the page, that you deleted it. I don't believe the discussion addresses the final changes I made. Could you please, please, please look at the following. 1) The balance of the references: Now the balance of the references has shifted dramatically: the vast majority are now non internal, as opposed to what the discussion above says. Please review this, as I spent many hours addressing this concern and putting in all of the external non oasis references requested. 2) Since the American Management Association catalog has been published, I was able to pull a copy of that and verify that the new 180+ hardcover Exceptional Service, Exceptional Profit: The Secrets of Five Star Customer Service Organizations is a lead title in their catalog, featuring as the main case studies only The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company and Oasis Disc Manufacturing, thus showing the notability beyond doubt, I would say, of this company. Neither of these points is addressed in the discussion. Please review as well as the general reworking; I think this is a strong, verified, well referenced article on a notable subject now. THANKS! Hi, thanks for all your efforts. Unfortunately it seems that consensus among the participants at AfD was that the page failed to meet to notability requirements. Since deletion debates are run by community consensus, deletion was really the only option in this case. Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions. Speedy Deletion: Janette Smith

Dear Juliancolton,

I believe there are some oversights on both sides that may have contributed to your actions. However, I'd like to walk through them for your consideration.

Firstly, there were two other contributors whose recommendations were "Do Not Delete."

Comment. I'm hard pressed to understand how something with several assertions of notability (remember, that's all an article has to do to avoid speedy deleting) is "close to A7". That said, I very vaguely remember trying to spiff this one up last summer and welcoming a new user and guiding her on the COI guidelines. The references are thin, but they are there. She has appeared on national television (US) programming and several high profile local programming as well. I'm not around anymore, and frankly forgot about this article, but at the time I felt it worth inclusion and spent a brief amount of time on it. Reading it again, it does need more cleanup, and removal of some spammy language. Not delete though. Overall, a Weak keep. Keeper | 76 17:42, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, Janette, I think you should have every chance to prove "notability" by Wikipedia standards. So I went to your article and inserted a few references, and I deleted the complaint about the article not having any references. For more information see Wikipedia:Notability (people). Summary in a nutshell: "A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject." --MelanieN (talk) 16:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)MelanieNSummary in a nutshell: "A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject." --MelanieN (talk) 16:09, 16 November 2009

The Huntsville Times, The Atlanta Daily World, The Atlanta Journal The Cincinnati Post, The Dallas Times, Eclipse Magazine, Baseline Magazine.

For 7 years I was the Dir. of Media/ Exec. He was on President Bush's Faith-based initiative board to which I served as well. I couldn't mention it because there was no article mentioning me in that regard. He was the subject of a Time Magazine cover story and had half page articles written on him by both the New York Times and New York Post. I won't regurgitate my full rebuttals here, but it was evident some of your wiki helpers didn't even check your own source for verification on Dr. Dollar or his 'notability'.

I also presented conflicting numbers for 'hits' your 'wiki' commentators reported.

Lastly, the only fault I find is that I was not aware that you should not have someone from your staff or yourself recommend your page.

I also was working to add the appropriate reference materials and dates when with guidance from Wiki helpers when the page is promptly deleted. There are some newpaper articles (from 1999 - 2005) that are no longer available online, however I managed to get the cache' version links to prove they exist. Otherwise any one could lie and say they were written about. Though online access to the original printing/posting is inaccessible - the works and contributions should remain.

Thank you for sharing some of your gift of time to fully read my review request. Respectfully,

Janette Smith

Apply for editing restriction

Hi! I have corrected a highly politicized article that is constantly being vandalized and I want it to be put under editing restrictions. How can this be done? It is the article 'Persian people' which political activists want to rename ‘Persian speakers’ in order dilute and water down the distinction of one of the oldest and largest ethnic groups in the Middle East. Article consorting ethnic groups are highly sensitive and most if not all Need editing restrictions and fact checking.

G'day JC

and hope you're good :-) - having been bandying your name around the wiki and mailing lists a bit for the last little while, me popping in here is probably overdue! - I thought I'd swing by just to mention a few things, and see if you were up for any more of a chat...

First I wanted to say that I don't feel you've done anything particularly wrong, nor particularly outrageous, but the issues that your (very minor) edit to a sexually explicit image raise are, to me, worth discussing - in fact, I feel that it's important to try and get some positive discussion and ultimately change in this area - I hope you don't feel that I've been aggressive, or mean, or in any way personal in my mentions of you - I don't think we've interacted much, but you surely seem the very model of a wikipedian :-)

Second, I noticed your reply at jimbo's talk page, and, as I noted there, it interested me that you highlighted the fact that you didn't actually view the image in question, and you don't intend to. I wondered if this was because you might agree with me that it would be inappropriate for you to do so? - that's sort of the implication that I got, but I thought it was worth clarifying :-)

Finally, I've discussed in the past with a number of wiki users the idea of a 'parents and partners' podcast at some point - this issue being only one of those that may be of interest in such a discussion. Would you and a parent (or partner!) be interested in something like this in the future? I've found that voice chats have a greater chance of making useful progress than the reams of circular text that can sometimes accompany on-wiki textual chat :-) cheers, and a merry chrimbo anywhoo..... Privatemusings (talk) 00:25, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Hey PM. Don't worry, no hard feelings—I certainly understand and sympathize with your concern, and I agree that it's one worth exploring. With regard to that image, I simply didn't click on it because I didn't have to. In my work as a Commons admin, I'm sure I've dealt with similarly explicit content before, so it wouldn't have been a particularly big deal for me to view it while vandal-fighting. But given their nature, I try to avoid such illustrations whenever reasonably possible. So yes, I think your assessment of my response at Jimbo's talk page is more-or-less accurate. I think that during the upcoming break I'd be able to get one of my folks to discuss the issue, as I was already planning for another, somewhat-similar reason. Hope this helps clarify a few things at least. :) Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 00:40, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
thanks for the reply, JC :-) - "I was already planning for another, somewhat-similar reason" - sounds very interesting! - My availability is somewhat limited due to beach and sun over the christmas / new year period, but I'll keep an eye, and hope to be involved :-) - there's an off chance that I'll be able to pop in on sunday (although it looks pretty busy - are you confident and up to speed with the recording stuff? let me know if you need a hand or anything) - hope you're good, and glad we're not off on the wrong foot :-) Privatemusings (talk) 07:21, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Suck my...no, Roy Gutman

Hey Julian, are you still on call? I have a problem on Roy Gutman--a quick glance at the edit history should make it sufficiently clear that we are dealing with an SPA sock, now that the prime "gutter" of the article has received a 3RR warning (after 4 reversals, mind you). I'd love to file a 3RR thingy and all, but I haven't done that in a while--and it's really past my bedtime. Would you do me a favor and look into it, or delegate it? Maybe after performing a speedy close on SpacemanSpiff or Ucucha's RfAs and letting them do the work? Seriously, I gotta go, but this seemed urgent to me. Thanks in advance, and happy editing, Drmies (talk) 06:14, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Meh, this is a bit of a tricky situation. It's been like 12 hours since the last revert, so I can't really issue any blocks or page protections. I think it's probably best for me to watchlist it and take any action once another revert is preformed. Is that reasonable? –Juliancolton | Talk 14:24, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Meh indeed. The sources aren't impressive, that's a fact. I have no doubt that there's a sock in that drawer, and the edits should probably have been discussed a bit more, and 3RR was broken--but I am not about to break a lance for a self-published semi-conspiracy theorist. So I'm not even going to revert the last revert until more, better coverage becomes available. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:44, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes we can verify everything as I have stated....which pretty much means the wiki editors never checked anything. From what I am learning, pushing a delete button is easy; checking the truth takes more time, effort and skill.

A simple search on imdb.com website under actor "Cliff Taylor" would have saved trouble and a guessing game. How hypocritical to question truth without any verification or investigation.

If you wish I will run through a point by point analysis of the material in the article if that is what it takes with you or any so called editor. I do wonder what qualifications are used to come to that conclusion since anyone can call themselves an "editor"Abdulfez (talk) 21:02, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Decisions to delete are effectively made by the community of editor who happen to participate in AFD, and an admin then implements the decision based on consensus. Sometimes the community doesn't get it right, but AFD discussions last a week to allow for debate. In this case, after a full period of conversation, consensus to delete was almost unanimous. If you believe the decision to delete was inaccurate, feel free to initiate a thread at WP:Deletion Review. imdb.com is explicitly not considered a reliable source, so if you feel it should be restored, you'll have to try to uncover some more credible references and list them at DRV. –Juliancolton | Talk 21:33, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Coaching again?

Hey Julian. I tried out your initial advice of waiting until toward the end of the year to run for RfA, although it ended badly (roughly 37% support). I agreed with the users in the oppose and neutral sections that I needed more experience, and I withdrew the candidacy. I was hoping we could work on the issues people opposed over? Cheers, Dylan620 (contribs, logs, review) 18:08, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw that. Sorry it turned out that way, but at least you got some good criticism. It looks like most of the opposition stemmed from concerns regarding your maturity, which can't really be addressed through admin coaching. At the moment I think your best bet would be to become a little more wiki- independent and work on "growing up" go alleviate the issues discussed at RfA. Just my opinion, but we can start again if you'd like. –Juliancolton | Talk 19:24, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
If I may, ever so boldly weigh in, Dylan - admin coaching won't help you at this time. IIRC, you know (afaik) sufficient policy - maturity was the area people opposed over, myself included. I had similar opposition in my first RfA and took it to light by reading over the opposes first of all. Soon after, I started saying to myself, "Hmm, is what I'm saying here meaningful? Is it mature?" and by ways of that grew up. You're a great guy - don't take a failed RfA so harshly, think of it as a learning experience. :) ceranthor 06:08, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello :) I see that you are a regular closing admin at WP:AFD and was wondering if this AFD discussion meets WP:SNOW? Thank you, WossOccurring (talk) 16:47, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Given the previous series of keeps and the fact that the newest AFD has been open for less than 24 hours, I doubt that SNOWing it is a good idea.... Tim Song (talk) 16:53, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Agree with Tim. An article that survived three AFDs should not be SNOW deleted since there is a strong indication that community consensus is not likely completely in favor of deletion. And I'd say especially not an AFD where all "arguments" are "per WP:LISTCRUFT", i.e. essay-based. A SNOW delete at AFD should only be done if policy based reasons exist that are clearly in favor of deletion. Regards SoWhy 16:57, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I agree as well with Tim and SoWhy per WP:IDONTLIKEIT, i.e. WP:ITSCRUFT. We delete for serious policy based reasons (article is a hoax, article is libelous, article is a copyright violation) and not "I don't like cruft". Moreover, it is a discussion and note a vote and we currently have nine calls to delete following the nomination versus eight calls to keep. Most of the deletes are repetitive WP:ITSCRUFT style of arguments to avoid in deletion discussion and are therefore not as compelling as the more policy based reasons for keeping. What you see there as well is how a discussion can start with a flurry of "votes" in what direction, but can rapidly change course when additional arguments are made. Roadgeek

I've removed the "Notable Roadgeeks" section again. The people listed are not notable by Wikipedia's standards, and thus that information is not encyclopedic. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:44, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, I disagree, but really don't care enough to force the issue. Petty nonsense like this isn't worth my time, I am surprised it was worth yours. N9jig (talk) 01:50, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

The people mentioned, most of who I know in real life, are not notable. If you have noticed, the article's been up for AFD five times already. Also, if you're going to say its petty nonsense, you should note that JC's written 3 FAs for the project and is a respected member.Mitch32(A fortune in fabulous articles can be yours!) 01:57, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

While some may not be notable, wouldn't replacing the ones that aren't with ones that are be more constructive than just deleting the entire section? Also, no disrespect is (or was) intended, but what is an "FA"? I presume JC is Juliancolton. N9jig (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:15, 17 December 2009 (UTC).

"FA" means Featured Article (i.e. considered to be the best articles in Wikipedia, as determined by Wikipedia's editors). I know nothing of Roadgeek, but saying that the non-notable ones should be replaced with notable ones is easier said than done. If you have any suggestions of people that would meet Wikipedia's definition of notable (specifically with regard to notability for people), discuss them on the article's talk page and get a concensus to include them. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 02:22, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

abdulfez

Hello

I was trying to find an answer to my question about having the abdulfez entry put back up on Wikipedia again.

As I said, it was not a "HOAX" as described by the editors that deleted it and I have no idea why it was deleted as no email or any notice was sent to us of any kind.

A simple check on GOOGLE or the imdb.com data base would reveal that abdulfez aka actor Cliff Taylor exists.Abdulfez (talk) 00:20, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

abdulfez

imdb is not a reliable source?? imdb just happens to be one of the largest repositories for information in show business. I will forward your comments to them.

Since the information on abdulfez is mostly relating to his resume (and I will tell you again that every word of it is fact) what does an artist have to do--provide written affidavits from every employer he has ever worked for? That would be next to impossible. So where are those verifing sources to come from? The media? Do you want TV guide or Radio Times?

The abdulfez page mentions that he is an actor on MTV-Europe, a voice actor on the hit comedy show Spitting Image in the UK. That could be checked if your editors did a proper job? Television productions logs? Those are not an actors property.

The "unanimous decision" by your editors does not count when based on heresy; a Wiki policy that is silly and simply unworkable. You do more harm than good without helping your credibility in the community.

I will challange this and make a complaint to Jimmy Wales whom I have spoken to in the past about doing a concert to help RAISE money for Wikipedia since abdulfez has worked with Bob Geldof and Max Headroom in the past for Fashion Aid and Sports Aid...but I would not expect you would believe that without an affidavit either.

All I see here is blatant incompetence.

PS/

imdb checks sources and are usually very accurate....of course that is not a perfect universe is it.abdulfez 01:01, 20 December 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abdulfez (talkcontribs)

abdulfez

Julian,

Running away is always the easy option.

I have raised valid points about my case and unless you are running some kind of Communist dictatorship--I have every right to raise my voice over gross negligance by your editors. abdulfez 14:45, 20 December 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abdulfez (talkcontribs)

Are you just going to harass me, or take my advice and bring it to WP:DRV? If the former, please don't continue posting at my talk page. Thank you. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:51, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
I am going to pipe up here!
IMDB isn't counted as a reliable source as anyone can add information to it (although, to be fair, the staff at IMDB do try to confirm the information - however one of the main sources which they use are actors' agents, etc - who are not independent of the subject: we wouldn't accept the agents as independent sources as per our guidelines, because of the vested interest they have in the actor: they are not an independent source of information. As we wouldn't accept the agents as independent, we can't accept IMDB - who often reproduce what the agent gives them - as independent).
Google isn't counted as reliable in itself - although obviously some of the links it gives would be reliable, many are not. We don't judge notability by Google hits.
You asked earlier what sources we would accept as reliable? Your suggestion of the media is spot on! I would suggest reading Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Independent sources, which give guidelines on this. My advice is to find national/international media (newspapers, magazines, TV news for example) which have given significant coverage of the subject - in other words, not just a few seconds mention on a news item, or a sentence or two in a newspaper article. What you need to do is to find an news item which is mainly about the subject, or a newspaper article which is mainly about the subject.
Although Google Web Search isn't particularly useful, other Google searches are:Google Scholar (which shows which scholarly works mention the subject), Google Books and Google News. Here are the results I came across:
Google Scholar - 3 hits, none about this subject
Google Books - 12 hits, 3 about this subject: but all of them (Maxes: Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases; Cliffs: Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases‎; Launches: Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases‎) just reprint Wikipedia articles
Google News - 5 hits, none of them about this subject.
If I had come across the AfD for this article - which did not have reliable, independent sources of information - I would have suggestion deletion, as there is no indication of notability in the sources which I could find.
You have a right to appeal the deletion, as Juliancolton says, by going to WP:DRV.
One final comment: you say that the notability guideline is a Wiki policy that is silly and simply unworkable: if by that you mean that it is a policy that doesn't let me do what I want, so I don't like it then you are entitled to that opinion - but the policy seems to generally work for articles. Find us some independent, reliable third-party sources of information (not IMDB for the reasons given above) and then we can go ahead with this discussion. Until you do that, there is nothing else to be said. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:14, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi, you deleted this article about a year ago due to this AfD. The article was recently recreated and from a glance it doesn't appear to have addressed the notability problems presented in the AfD. Deletion of David A. Steinberg article

Hi Julian,

I've been watching the David A. Steinberg article for a while now and usually check on it once a month for vandalism. I noticed that it has been deleted through the auto-tools for not meeting notability standards. While I would agree he is not a historical figure of significance like George Washington, he was the founder of a major online marketing company. Based on the historical vandalism for his article, he has quite a bit of notoriety good and bad for that company's rise to billion dollar internet darling and fall from grace into bankruptcy. I would like to bring this article back from the deletion log since I believe that it meets the criterion set by what wikipedia is not.

thanks, george —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amonkey71 (talkcontribs) 13:52, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

The western Greater Antilles, maybe? I was under the impression that the name of the article had to be in bold within the first line, and when I didn't see it there, I fixed it. Thegreatdr (talk) 05:08, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Taconic State Parkway

Julian,

In the course of doing a little work on this article for NRHP I realized it needs a lot of work, so I'm doing it (the NRHP application has a very nice history section, a good thing since the article's history section needs sources (among other things)). I think there's a reasonable shot at a GA here, following a PR after I'm done. You are welcome to help out if there's anything you can add (I used your pics of the road, BTW, to illustrate the entries for it in the Westchester and Dutchess NRHP lists). Daniel Case (talk) 06:48, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Sure. I'll see if I can help expand and source the route description to start with. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:32, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Hello, Juliancolton. You have new messages at Thejadefalcon's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
This seems to be coming to an end a bit. I'd appreciate a reply to my (admittedly badly-explained) concern. --ThejadefalconSing your songThe bird's seeds 16:25, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Look, if IMatthew wants to be mean and attack other people by calling them trolls, let him. He's only hurting himself and driving potentialy friendly people away.--Coldplay Expért Let's talk 17:04, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Deleted article

Please could you authorise 'Nicholas Fryett' as an article - I am trying to create it but you have stopped me from doing so. Sir Richard Branson and all the others have articles, so why can I not? I am worth £325 million... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nickfryett (talkcontribs) 16:54, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. Please note that writing about yourself is, in general, highly discouraged. If you're sufficiently notable, it's best to ask someone else to write the article and review it for quality. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 16:59, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Could you take a look at this?

The section Reasons for Ismail’s conversion policy, in the Safavid conversion of Iran from Sunnism to Shiism article appears to have been copied verbatim. I posted a tag and a warning to the "creator" to re-write that section[2] and instead have been told that the books in question are in "Public domain". Could you take a look at this section? Thanks. --Kansas Bear (talk) 04:10, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Sorry

Sorry, I was on break and just reverted it before returning to work. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 21:26, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, considering you were the nominator, don't you think it was inappropriate to revert it in the first place because you happened to disagree? –Juliancolton | Talk 21:27, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
You're right, I should have left a note on your page asking you to undo it. It was a example of a quick knee-jerk reaction due to limited time on my part. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 01:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

roll back

Like? With the many vandals around it is hard to know genunine vandals. There are many vandal like edits. --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 03:17, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Which is why you have to be careful and WP:AGF. In light of the above response, which I find to be a bit reckless and disconcerting, I have temporarily removed your rollback rights. Please read WP:VAND and review WP:ROLLBACK, and I will reinstate the bit after you can demonstrate that you can be trusted once again. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:19, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
How? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 03:31, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, "how" what? –Juliancolton | Talk 03:32, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I mean how to gain your trust? And on some article, it seems I accidently clicked the "revert" button. Most of my reverts are true ;) --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 03:33, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I've seen quite a few (maybe a dozen) mistaken reverts tonight alone, actually, and when new users attempt to discuss it you just revert and report them. That's not acceptable. Use WP:TW for a while perhaps and demonstrate that you're familiar with the policies I touched on above. Nothing against you personally, but new users can't be scared off by hasty rollbacking. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:35, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

If you see we are under attack from the 4chan guys (honestly check the IRC discussions). When will you reinstate the rollback rights? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 03:37, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

I've noticed, but that isn't an excuse to revert everything because it might be vandalism, even though it obviously isn't. I don't have a set deadline; just please take my advice on board and try to go back and review your bad reverts. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:38, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Strawberry Hill

I added it from nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com, the best place for older listings (pre-2005 or so). Newer ones, and even back to the '80s, you can get from the weekly lists at the NRHP website (follow the link from the bottom of WP:NRHP ... however, be advised that a listing may sometimes be announced weeks after it was actually made, and the Federal Register is also worth Googling for this. Stephen J Lippard page

Hi,

Why was the Stephen Lippard page deleted. I cant find the reason anyway, and he's a pretty big name in science so it made sense for there to be a page about him. Thanks
