Outflow boundary GA limbo

I seem to have gotten myself into a pickle, for all the right reasons. Someone who made one edit to the outflow boundary article submitted the article for GAN in June. I started a review of the article, mentioning that I could not possibly be the reviewer of the article since I did most of the edits. Then, the person who submitted it for GAN didn't do the requested work, so I compounded the problem by improving its look, content, etcetera. Now the GA template on the page implies I'm the primary reviewer, and I think it's keeping potential reviewers at bay. What can be done here? It's been listed at GA for 9 weeks now, which even for me, is an extraordinarily long time. Thegreatdr (talk) 00:35, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Please save my nether region

Hi, about a year ago you did an Afd for me since I did not know how. I have just tried doing one all on my own (speedy aren't I?).

The page was "List of Riots" and while I thought I followed the direction on the Wiki help exactly (even used written notes) something didn't come out right.

The AfD tag never appeared on the page top and while I ended up creating the AfD discussion page, and it show on the page history, somehow the AfD has not shown in the log of AfD on the official page.

Would greatly appreciate if you could fix this or (I'm willing to do the work) tell me how I failed when I thought I was so careful.

Fireworks

I saw your msg on wade's page and thought of leaving my two cents.

• For many fireworks in a singe picture, use a wide angle lens, around 17mm would be good.
• Use long exposures. Usually around 1s-onwards
• Use a tripod or beanbag for stability.
• Just take shots before the fireworks start to capture the whole motion

My new page not appearing on Wiki search

Hi Julian

I created the page Outlet Property Services over a week ago and it's still not showing when I do a search. It's still in my contributions and each time I have done an edit, I saved the page.

Seems you created the page in your userspace (User:Markgraindorge/Outlet Property Services). Only pages in the mainspace show up in default search results, which is why you haven't been able to find it. Stilltim autoreviewer

I have concerns about your granting of autoreviewer to User:Stilltim. He has been the subject of an RFC/U about creating numerous excessive articles contrary to consensus in the past. Even his recent Deleware articles are massive copy/paste jobs that mostly duplicate each other. I see you quickly reverted my talk page, and fair enough really. As you directed me too: "this does not give you an excuse to respond in kind". I do not like the user Bidgee (talk) page or discussion page. He links to my edits and claims "personal attacks and use there point of view, and editwar". Indeed. At the moment it's looking like it'll be closed as "no consensus" or "keep". I think the nominator's arguments would have been more convincing if he had nominated each article individually, since there is really no precedent to batch-delete 20 GAs and FAs. Agreed. Really, not to get all Machievellian, but if you want to put a hit out on an article, you're better off doing test cases, singling out the weakest ones, and then going after the others later per a precedent. Batch article deletions rarely end in a delete, in only because an admin doesn't want to sift through the discussion that way. It has something to do with compassion. YellowMonkey has spent a hell of a lot of time writing those articles. They may not all meet the inclusion criteria (that's still being hashed out), but remember that we are dealing with people here, not machines.

Speedy declined --> AfD?

"Typically when I decline a speedy deletion, I ship the article off to a procedural AfD nom." Why? There are all sorts of bad reasons for speedy deletion nominations, and it would surely be better to do a cursory search for sources, some adding of tags and adding WikiProjects to the talk page than sending all the articles to AfD. As far as I'm concerned a "procedural nomination" isn't a valid one. If you can't come up with a reason for deletion that accords with policy, I think the correct response is a speedy close. Weather articles

Hi Julian, it seems you are interested in articles related to weather. A lot of Wikipedia's articles on basic meteorological topics are not very good. I've been gradually working to remove some of the blatant errors and spruce up the writing. Hi, thanks for the note. Yes, meteorology articles in general could use some work (as could most Wikipedia articles!). I've noticed that articles on specific events (eg. Hurricane Fabian, Typhoon Paka, 1994 Christmas nor'easter) tend to be of higher quality than the more broad topics (Climate, Severe weather, etc). I'm more experienced with the former group, but I'd be happy to help. The problem is that meteorology is inevitably a boring topic, so it's hard to write "brilliant" prose on the subject. Still, factual errors inaccuracies to be dealt with. You might want to post at WT:METEO specifying which articles you find need the most work, as I know there are actually quite a few users there who can turn crap to excellence in a matter of hours. Julian, got a situation I've not faced before that I suspect an admin can handle.

I reverted some page blanking by an anon of someone's user page. Then the anon comes back and posts on my user page that she is the user, but that she's lost control of the account, and wants her personal info out of public view. First problem is determining if she is the actual user. Perhaps you can verify that, but of course I cannot. But I'm inclined to believe her. Another issue is this: The actual user posted that she's 15 years old, and included a photo of herself and much personal info. I'm willing to take a chance that this anon is pulling our leg just to be on the safe side and permanently delete the page. I explained to her that, even if it's blanked, anyone can restore it at will, unless it's permanently blanked.

So I'll leave it to you. The anon's talk page is User talk:72.222.147.24, and the User page in question is User:Missalicia1994. Let me know if I've been unclear about anything. Unschool 03:10, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Template USCensusPop

I noticed that you were one of the last editors of the template mentioned in the title of this post. Do you happen to know if there's a population template that allows entries outside the normal decadal censuses? I'm preparing to do a FAC run for Fairbanks, Alaska, and the city went through a lot of boom-and-bust periods between censuses. North Fringe of Bristol

I moved North Fringe back to North Fringe of Bristol, a title which gives some necessary geographical context. Although the term "North Fringe" is in local use, that is only because the city of Bristol (of which it is a "fringe") is taken as understood. SWGIT

Hi Juliancolton. I would like you to reconsider the deletion of the SWGIT article. It should be obvious from the article that there is no personal/business gain as this is not a company, but rather a law enforcement best standards scientific working group set up by the FBI. No products/services are offered, no products/services are endorsed. Also, several other SWG groups have Wiki pages.

Hi. I deleted the article in accordance with the proposed deletion policy, which states that if a nominated article goes uncontested for a week, it may be speedily deleted. The original nominator cited concerns that the article was promotional in nature; therefore, it will likely take significant work to bring the article up to standard. I'd be happy to restore the deleted content into your userspace, to allow for you to address any issues in your own time; it could then be moved to the mainspace when ready. Would this be satisfactory?

On a side note, you seem to use terms such as "we" and us". Please be aware that role accounts for businesses and companies are not allowed, and may be blocked, as in general one account should be used by just one person.

The mop at the Commons

JC, I was wondering, since you have the mop over at the Commons what you participated in before being considered for the mop? I am looking to expand my usefulness and know that I need to start working at the Commons more often first off, but what types of non-Admin tasks should I look at working on more to both help out and possibly make myself look more useful. For the most part, I did a bunch of categorization and general cleanup, and in the weeks prior to my RfA I did some flickr reviewing and participated in deletion requests. Commons also looks for some degree of interaction with the community, so a few posts at AN, VP, etc. would definitely help. You might also want to patrol NewFiles from time to time to check for potential copyvios and other similar issues. Hardy Boys

Dear JC, I have been deleteing those sections of the Hardy Boys page, because the books are one of my favorite series, and I don't like the the sections discussing homosexuality and homoromance. I find it insulting since they are well-written and popular book characters, and they are not gay or show interest in their friends or each other. They just work as a team and help each other out. They are supposecd to be only about a year apart, so they get along well, and fight seldomly. I myself am a year older than my younger brother and we get along and are close and rarely fight. He is one of my best friends. So just to say JC, that I don't appriciate those crude oppinions on the Hardy Brother characters. So I would be greatly enjoy if you would let me remove those section for the sake of myself and other avid Hardy Boys readers looking for info on the book series. Thank you!

Why did you remove my requested move (Bleed for Me (Dead Kennedys song) → Bleed for Me) saying it should be discussed? I was disappointed to find "Triple Seven" article deleted. I wanted to confirm that, indeed, there is some special significance in the "lucky 777" combination in gaming. I've found plenty of confirmations, including this DELTED article. Is there any way to see the deleted article? It was deleted in accordance with the proposed deletion policy; basically, if a nominated article goes uncontested for seven days, it may be deleted at any time. In this case, the original nominator cited notability concerns, which, upon my own uninvolved review, I tend to agree with. If you create an account, I can move a copy of the deleted content into your userspace to allow for you to bring it up to standard in your own time. Numbering on JMA Tropical Depressions

Some users has been insisting of adding designations to JMA Tropical Depressions but they can't provide any evidence that the Tropical Depressions are designated as such by an official agency. For example, nowhere outside Wikipedia indicates that Auring is designated as Tropical Depression 01. Even worse, these designations are largely different from those can be found in SAREP issued by JMA(RSMC Tokyo). This creates a very confusing situation. If there is no official designation associated to a particular system, then leave it as such. This has been the case for extratropical lows, thunderstorm, tornado and many other severe weather events.[4] You won't have extratropical low 1, extratropical low 2, extratropical low 3, etc. (unless a certain official agency decides to do so in the future) Tropical Depression is nothing different from other forms of severe weather events. If there is an official designation, use it. If there is not and the Tropical Depression has sufficient impact to warrant its own article, then use relevant descriptions such as place, month, festival, year, etc. whichever appropriate. Crop circle protection

Hello. It appears that the sudden avalanche of vandalism on the Crop circle article is due to the Wikipedia article gaining a higher profile via Google's use of crop circles in today's logo [6]. Since these click-able, search-able logos do not typically last longer than a day, the page protection probably will not be needed after about 24 hours. You might want to reduce the protection length, but that is entirely up to you. Also, I removed the "small" parameter from the template so that all the extra visitors explicitly know why they cannot edit this article on "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit" plus then they can see that the protection is only temporary. This morning there was a category added to this page that classified it as a reboot film. I searched Star Trek reboot and found several reliable sources that classify the movie as such. I sourced four of them OC Weekly, Mtv, HighDef digest and The Examiner. User:Darrenhusted insists that because the director isn't quoted as saying it's a reboot we can't include it. If you look at the sources in the page history even the titles themselves classify the movie as a reboot. I am loathe to violate 3rr and the other editor is very close to. Follow-up to mentor request on 7 September

Did you have a chance to look at the review of 2009 Giro d'Italia for GA? The user told me earlier today (in US Eastern Daylight Time) that he had been mugged and his computer had been stolen the day after the seven day grace period expired to correct the article upon my suggestions. I failed this article and the two others because the GA Procedures stated this. The user (Nosleep) as I expected was upset at my decision, but I was not responsible for him getting mugged and having his computer stolen. I actually responded to your initial query, but it seems you missed it. I think the issue is that you created your article in your user-space rather than the article-space; only pages in the later namespace appear in Special:Search. I don't see what full protection is going to resolve. I am familiar with the topic, that's the anime Dauros is a character from. If you want to delete the character, I'd say redirct it to the anime he's from. Crop circle

I noticed that you put protection on the crop circle article. Yesterday two users Pshent and stvjns made extensive changes to the article giving what I believe to be undue weight to supernatural theories involving crop circles and removing discussion that contradicts these views. I am having a difficult time repairing the damage due to my inexperience as an editor and the sheer number of edits. I would appreciate any help or advice you could give. Weather

Hey Julian, how you doin? Have a question ... Do you know of a good resource/reference which give the weather history of a particular place? Basically, I'm looking for things like "what was the weather like in X (ex: Daytona Beach, FL), on such and such a date. Most of the newspapers I know of only go back as far as the mid-1980's for on-line refs., and I'd like to find something that went back as far as maybe the 1960's. There are quite a few sites with good historical weather data. I like this site, which goes back to Jan. 1, 1946. Here's another useful one. Location map

Zoltan413 hosed the {{Location map New York}}. The clue was that the problem went away when you removed the pushpin map. The pushpin maps are created by {{Location map}}, which calls one of thousands of little location map templates. This is a somewhat problematic design in that they are no very well patrolled. However, it's pretty clear when there is a problem, as you noticed. Thanks for alerting me to the problem. It looks like Columbus, New York is fine now. German CDU sub stubs

Hi, I've requested to User talk:Xeno that they be deleted. The task is too huge (and mind numbingly boring) to take on alone. I tried fleshing a few out and even had a few DYKs out of them and some de stubbed but the sheer amount needing doing is too much,. As there clearly aren't many editors working on them it is best to salvage what has been edited and just delete the sub stubs. Not exactly a "new" debate, but given the changes to WP:AIRCRASH, I thought it would be better to let the discussion remain open for seven more days to receive new, more accurate feedback. Hmm, the way that is reading to me is that the inital AfD has been/will be voided. Am I correct? It should be made clear on the AfD as to whether comments made before WP:AIRCRASH was changed which refer to the old version will be counted or not, and comments which referred to what was then the draft version which were made before the new version was posted will be counted or not. It's all getting a bit messy IMHO. BTW, as you know, I've got an RfA running. It looks like I'm going to be granted Adminship. I'll not perform any admin-related action in respect of the AfD discussion as I'm an involved editor so you needn't worry that I'll steam in myself come Monday morning. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Whose Responsible This

I would very much like you to look at this deletion again. I don't believe that:

"Arguments for keeping the article are almost all irrelevant or non-existent"

is accurate or true. There are more than several comments voting to keep the article that quote secondary sources including an article in The Guardian online written by a respected (read paid) journalist. The article in question makes a very valid point about humiliation and mass cyberbullying.

I would like to hear a coherent argument against these votes rather than having them dismissed out of hand. In my opinion there is a greater issue here.

Like it or not - and clearly you do not - Wikipedia has a role to play in recording modern culture for posterity. As there are no realistic limits to the amount of space that Wikipedia can occupy, the removal of articles that describe small scale and ephemeral events is both unnecessary and creates a dishonest picture of the time. To take a more serious example, what would French history be without evidence of the "j'accuse" controversy? Without the 'disposable' cartoons and satirical writing of the day would we understand events as we do?

Yes, the internet is awash with such pieces of pop culture, but the technology that has permitted this also allows a virtually limitless capacity to archive them. Yes, this is a reasonably pointless meme but who are we to decide on its cultural importance, at this early stage?

As an advertising copywriter in digital I have a great deal of experience of the 'churn' of the internet and can categorically state that the argument that 'nothing vanishes' from the web is nonsense. Content vanishes all the time and when it does, it disappears forever.

I have been asked not to 'attack' Wikipedia contributors, an accusation that I will accept and for which I apologise. The essential essence of my hyperbolic statement remains however. There appear to be forces at work, 'deletionist' forces, working unilaterally to make Wikipedia something that they believe is right and fitting. This deletion has not done much to disuade me of this view.

On a lighter note, may I congratulate you on your continued work for Wikipedia and your recent 'day'.

Hi, thanks for the note. I actually believe consensus was clear. As you know, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; and while we do accept content that is more befitting of almanacs and specialized encyclopedias, an Internet meme created two weeks ago hardly meets our inclusion policies. That said, I examined some of the arguments for retaining this article, and I've determined that very few actually explain their reasoning satisfactorily. For example, with all due respect, your vote, "Stop trying to control Wikipedia you information Stasi" is irrelevant to the discussion, and thus I was forced to discount it. The same goes for "Avast there ya landlubbers,I votes we keep it", and many others. It is clear to me that this AfD was canvassed for participation off-wiki. As EVula (talk · contribs) noted, if this meme becomes established and truly notable after a year or so, then we can reconsider this decision. Deletion of ClearPoint Credit Counseling page

I'm looking for some clarification. A page I created for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions was deleted for various reasons, one of which is that it was advertising. Let me say that I am in complete agreement with this standard, I only want to understand its application. There is a nearly identical page for Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Atlanta. The only difference I can see between that page and the one I created is that there are some additional links. That in itself doesn't seem like a sufficient distinction to merit deletion; it seems additional editing would suffice. Can you clarify?

Also, my user page was deleted, apparently because I had a draft of the ClearPoint page stored there. It was my impression that I was the only one seeing contents of my userpage; perhaps I misunderstood. I request restoration of my user page.

If there are other similar pages, those may have to be dealt with as well. As for your userpage, it will be visible to anybody, which is why many content policies do apply to the userspace. Deletion of Discworld Stamps article

I was about to add another reference to the original article but you made your decision to delete it. I believe that this was an unfair deletion. I am a member of the Discworld Stamps forum and have just joined as a Wikipedia User.

In my view the rebuttal by Bernard Pearson, who produces the stamps, was very strong. The stamps were an invention of Sir Terry Pratchett himself, author of the Discworld novels, he was the bestselling author of the 90s and has sold over 55 million books worldwide (see Wikipedia entry), and first introduced the stamps in the Discworld novel 'Going Postal'. At that time Waterstones booksellers gave away a free Discworld Stamps First Day Cover with each book. The stamps were even illustrated in the end papers of the book. Since that day Discworld Stamps have grown hugely and are regularly shown and sold at Discworld conventions in Britain, USA and Australia. The stamps have been featured in Stamp Magazine and Gibbons Stamp Monthly, Britains leading stamp magazines on several occasions including a mention in the current edition of Gibbons Stamp Monthly featuring an article on the Bath Postal Museum and the link with Terry Pratchett.

The stamps are traded on eBay almost constantly with rarer stamps fetching over £1000. They are an important part of Cinderella stamps. Over 2 million stamps have been produced in their 5 years of existence. The fact that they are now archived in the British Library Philatelic Collection testifies to their importance.

I would ask that you reconsider your decision to delete the article.

There have been further collaborations which should be verifiable as third-party proof of notability (Cinderella Stamp Society, The Kipling Society and the British Library to name but three), although unfortunately they do not have anything I can link to on the web as proof. Deletion of CyanogenMod

I think a software package that's covered on both Gizmodo and Slashdot (and whose YouTube channel became the 33rd most subscribed even before its official launch) is certainly notable enough to merit inclusion on Wikipedia. I realize notability is subjective to some degree, and the perspective of an outsider (i.e. someone who's not in the Android-modding community) may be very different from that of someone who has an active interest in this particular software niche. But if the issue of notability arises for a page like compressor stall, then I would naturally expect the opinions of pilots and aerospace engineers to be given greater weight than others. I don't know what the page looked like when you chose to delete it, but I hope that you'll have the decency to leave the new page alone this time around--or simply use a refimprove template or something similar to give suggestions for improvement. Please restore the article about the National Research Center for Women & Families

Dear Julian,

The National Research Center for Women & Families was described in a short wikipedia article, because it is frequently quoted in the media around the world (and in wikipedia). I'm not sure why you deleted it, but apparently you thought it was too much like advertising. However, the article seems no different than articles for many other think tanks and nonprofit organizations. If there is a problem, let's revise it rather than delete the entire article.

I hope that we can discuss this. The Center is a think tank that does not accept money from companies whose medical products it reviews or evaluates. It does not sell anything -- all the Center's work is provided for free. Center staff have testified before the Canadian Parliament, the U.S. Congress, and many scientific organizations and agencies. They are often quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and major media in many other countries as well. If you google it, you'll see what I mean.

Hanuman (2010 film)

I am seeing result of AFD as 'Keep'. But the tag of AFD is still there on article page.

Can I nominate this article for AFD again? Not only because it is future film, not only because even actor playing role of Hanuman is unknown, and not only because production is not started.

I want to nominate because basic source, official announcement by Disney, is absconding on net. I am not finding news in US or western media. Indian media is infamous for carrying hoax news. Few years back "alien" monkey in Delhi and around was reported by media 24/7.

Once the AfD is closed, the admin who closes usually takes the AfD tag off of the article, but I don't think it matters who takes it off once it is done. I think Julian just forgot. I took it off right now. :-)

Well, it is a fairly rude and dismissive way to oppose. You should provide your rationale for opposing, and let the readers decide for themselves whether or not it's a super-absolutely strong argument. Wikipedia administrator

Hello Julian: As you know I'm writing a draft article about Wikipedia administrators. Would you be able to tell me if Larry Sanger was ever an administrator of Wikipedia? and is Jimmy Wales an administrator or does he have all the admin privileges by default since he's the founder? Were the co-founders both admins by default or has the definition of administrator evolved over time to make the question of Larry Sanger having been an administrator, moot? I'm not sure how likely an article on Wikipedia administrators would be kept around, but as far as I know, neither Jimmy Wales nor Larry Sanger were elected to be administrators in the conventional sense. Basically, the two of them were administrators before there ever were administrators. But my word isn't good enough. See Larry Sanger and Jimbo Wales. This indicates that Larry Sanger is not an administrator now, and that Jimbo Wales is. This log listing indicates that any changes to Larry Sanger's status occurred prior to the keeping of logs about such things, so difficult to ascertain what user rights he had at some point in the past (at least with my limited knowledge of the system). ^Bongo_matic 15:22, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Lists

Featured lists are a waste of time. Gathering references to substantiate inclusion of entries is inane, since includability is usually obvious and WP:VER clearly states that only entries that are challenged or likely to be challenged should be referenced. And since lists generally present links, the nature of the topics that are linked is explained in each those linked pages -- and those explanations are subject to referencing which provides referencing to the lists by "passing through" the links. Copying the references to the lists that already lead to them is pointless busywork.

I am strongly opposed to wasting man hours on such a task. The greatest improvement in useability and usefulness to the OOK can be achieved by tackling these priorities:

1. Fixing errors, especially those in the government branches sections of the country outlines!
2. Writing the outline article: User talk:The Transhumanist/Outline (this should alleviate confusion about what an outline is and what it is for)
3. Recruiting editors to work on the outlines
4. Renaming the outlines that are still named "List of" (there are hundreds and hundreds of these), starting with those listed at Lists of mathematics topics
5. Reformatting the newly renamed outlines
6. Further integration (links to outlines, notices about outlines, and links between outlines)

Confusion will subside over time. Improving outline instruction pages would also help.

You're right about the deletion - my apologies, Julian. There is no improvement in the article. The problems of notability mentioned in the AfD have not been addressed. This kind of editing - the recreation of recently deleted BLPs with minimal changes - is disruptive and time-wasting. Headbomb (talk · contribs) has essentially ignored the AfD discussion - he should have made his additions then. Being a spokesperson for CERN is no sign of notability, I'm afraid. Certainly the promotions committee in the University of Hull did not consider it grounds for promoting Dunning-Davies to either reader or professor. Headbomb did participate in the AfD: he claimed quite incorrectly that Dunning-Davies was a Fellow of the Royal Society. The grounds for deleting the article remain unchanged. Storing it privately when an AfD discussion has gone against you and then putting it back wth minor modifications would seem to be a blockable offense. Why is the history of the page still intact if it has been recreated from scratch? The reinstatement of the deleted article from the userspace of Headbomb seems to have been done by admin NuclearWarfare (talk · contribs). Adding one sentence to the lede after a prolonged AfD discussion and then restoring the article without discussion makes a mockery of the deletion process. The content of the article has hardly changed as this diff shows [19]. There are several new redlinks and a copy-vio image. Mathsci (talk) 10:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Pohnpei Liberation Day Games Soccer 2009

Hi Julian,

I was very disappointed to see that the article on the Pohnpei Liberation Day Games Soccer tournament 2009 had been deleted. I was just wondering how it infringed on Wikipedia's policy. At the moment we are trying very hard to raise the profile of the game in Micronesia and documenting the first major club tournament on island for several years seemed like an important step forward, obviously then I was saddened to see the article had been removed. Do you think you could explain what exactly was wrong with it because I would love to make the necessary corrections myself?

Hi. It was deleted in accordance with the PROD policy, which allows for an article to be summarily removed if no-one contests its proposal for deletion goes uncontested for seven days. In this case, the editor who nominated it for deletion cited concerns related to the lack of notability. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. I got Joe Wilson (U.S. politician) unprotected the other day, and it's running at one vandal edit every 12 hours or so, which is perfectly manageable, and his heckling was much bigger news (and more recent) than Jones, to even where it was the subject of an SNL skit only 9 days ago.
