AfD

Which sources passed WP:GNG? --Jimbo[online] 08:11, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

To me it looks like concensus was delete. The arguments for keep were flawed. Anyways, I'll take it up at DRV later. --Jimbo[online] 13:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Bias or not, when I explained why the references fail WP:N, with no decent counter argument except "References look good to me". --Jimbo[online] 15:17, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
That's just a statement of the hierarchy of notability criteria. They didn't say what part of the article passed WP:N, just the fact that it overrides WP:ATHLETE. --Jimbo[online] 17:56, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for coming out!

I would like to thank you for coming out and participating in my Request for Adminship, which closed unsuccessfully at (48/8/6) based on my withdrawal. I withdrew because in my opinion I need to focus on problems with my content contributions before I can proceed with expanding my responsibilities. I completely understand your justification for switching from support to oppose. Overall I feel that the RfA has improved me as an editor and in turn some articles which in my eyes is successful. Thank you again for your support/opposition. Cheers and happy editing. --kelapstick (talk) 17:44, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps June update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 396 articles were swept in May! That more than doubles our most successful month of 163 swept articles in September 2007 (and the 2 articles swept in April)! I plan to be sending out updates at the beginning of each month detailing any changes, updates, or other news until Sweeps are completed. So if you get sick of me, keep reviewing articles so we can be done (and then maybe you'll just occasionally bump into me). We are currently over 60% done with Sweeps, with just over a 1,000 articles left to review. With over 40 members, that averages out to about 24 articles per person. If each member reviews an article a day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. I know that may be asking for a lot, but it would allow us to complete Sweeps and allow you to spend more time writing GAs, reviewing GANs, or focusing on other GARs (or whatever else it is you do to improve Wikipedia) as well as finish ahead of the two-year mark coming up in August. I recognize that this can be a difficult process at times and appreciate your tenacity in spending time in ensuring the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 18:07, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

I do appreciate your work

...and I understand where you're coming from concerning the updating of current articles, like the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. But, isn't that the point of current class, to point out current articles which need constant updates? I do appreciate some of the older articles you've worked on such as the 1941 Florida hurricane article and ones I started but never completed such as the 1994 Christmas Nor'easter article. My comments are not reflective of what I think of your work, merely how I read the wikipedia standards, and how they seem to apply to the TC project. And yes, I'm very frustrated at how little attention most of the older season articles and older storms appear to get. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:05, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

I have no strong opinions regarding articles on fish storm Alfalfa or fish spinner Ollie. If people want to create them, fine. But I do think our focus as a project should lie on the retirees before we address even the most efficient SST-dropping/ocean-blending cyclone. However, our attempts at working on Camille together didn't last all that long, did they? It's interesting how we all collaborated quite well on the tropical cyclone article, but Camille remains chicken liver. Thegreatdr (talk) 21:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Julian,

I've been asking lots of mentors over at WP:ADOPT for advice, and User:Garden replied with this one: "include some kind of reward at next year's WikiCup"

You're in Wikicup, right?

How would we go about what Garden has suggested?

Admin Coach

Hi there before putting in an application I was wondering if you could if you have time look through my contribs and see if I would be able to apply to be an admin. I have the minimum basics like participating in XFDs and closing/helping with requests on the help desk. Corruptcopper (talk) 20:19, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Just thought I'd butt in since I'm not sure if JC is here -- a lot of people will oppose if you almost only use Huggle and other automated tools (which is what I see). Audited content work is pretty much a must, or it is highly unlikely that you would pass. I disagree that content work is the be all and end all of adminship, but it seems a lot of people disagree with me, too. — neuro(talk) 20:21, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for that we will continue the discussion on my talkpage if you want as I woul like to know what you mean 'Audited work' Corruptcopper (talk) 20:24, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
In accordance with point six of Julian's editnotice I'd rather keep messages here. By 'audited content work', I mean GA/FA/FL/DYK, etc. Your unfamiliarity with these processes would be your downfall in an RfA -- I don't agree with it, but it is true. — neuro(talk) 20:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Deletion to be completed

Hi, you have done a good job in deleting the pages "Michele Trimarchi" and his personal interpretation' of "Neuropsychophysiology". But in the present page of Neuropsychophysiology (that is much more correct, indeed!) there are still two links to ISN (the site of Michele Trimarchi!!) that, in its turn, is a completely non-notable institute. As a matter of fact, it is a self-referential, blatant private organization whose founder (M.Trimarchi) is nor a doctor neither a psychologist, but someone looking for legitimation and visibility. The scientific discipline of neuropsychophysiology is something apart! Please, delete these two links and only then it will be possible to widen the article in a science-based objective manner. Adminship

Thanks for your kind words. I have been asked once before to consider adminship, but declined. My primary goal is creating and improving articles, which I can do as a regular editor. It would be nice sometimes to be able to delete and protect articles, but I don't see myself ever being an extremely active admin. On the other hand, I hope I could make a pretty compelling case that I wouldn't abuse the tools either, and the community's expression of confidence in the fact that I'm here for good and not ill would be validating, I suppose. I notice that you are an admin. What do you find to be the best and worst parts of the job? Acdixon (talk contribs count) 17:04, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Date of death unknown/missing vs Year of death missing

Hi. Concerning this edit of yours I would to note that Category:Date of death unknown should be placed in talk pages only. Please read instructions in the category's page. This is a common mistake editors do. For article pages prefer the Category:Year of death missing. "Unknown" is not the same with "missing". "Unknown" refers to situations that the date is really unknown and unlikely to be found. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 18:33, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Reply to question

Well, not quite dozens, only about one dozen so far. They're created in my userspace because that is the only way to edit in peace without being harassed by a band of 8-10 editors who don't like my layouts and have made a crusade of stalking my contributions. They claim to have community consensus, despite dissenting opinions, and have gone as far as trying to impose an illegal restriction on my edits – see here and here. Logically their vendetta doesn't hold much water – if they truly believe that their style preferences are also those of the community, then they need only step back and let some other editor revert when he comes across what he thinks to be a glaring travesty of the MoS. However, I think they have tainted any claims they might have had to impartiality by their obsessive behaviour. Rotational (talk) 08:17, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Why was the article indexing "The B.S. Report" deleted?

Former article link: List of 'Eye of the Sports Guy' and 'B.S. Report' Podcasts —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.61.80.118 (talk) 02:40, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I can find no good reason for deleting the article that indexed the podcast "The B.S. Report" by Bill Simmons. Wikipedia finds it acceptable to keep an index of TV shows, containing a list of episodes with a brief description. If this is allowed, why is keeping a list of podcasts with a brief description and a listening link not? Why is there an arbitrary distinction between a TV show and a podcast? The page for the B.S. Report contained links to several older podcasts that are not available on ESPN.com or the iTunes archive. It was a useful resource that did not need to be deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CComp (talkcontribs) 02:25, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline update – Good news and bad news – 06/08/2009

The big push continues.

And it seems to be working!

The good news is that there's growing support for outlines, and there are more editors than ever editing them!

The bad news is that the complainers are disproportionately represented on the project's various talk pages. While many editors work diligently on the front end, a handful of complainers are trying to tear down the project behind the scenes. Fortunately, barely enough supporters have been watching those pages that no consensus for moving or merging the outlines has succeeded. So far...

Big problem: ignorance of what outlines are for and their benefits

Most of the opposition seems to be unaware of the complete range of what outlines are used for. They just don't get it.

This is why it is important to complete the outline article draft. An article with a comprehensive treatment of outlines would be the perfect place to refer anybody unfamiliar with outlines to.

Opposers also don't seem to understand how outlines differ from some other page type that they prefer. Some think articles are good enough as an overview, others think portals are more in-depth, still others think categories or navigation boxes are the most efficient and useful way to organize and present topical information. Some have simply never seen an "Outline of" page before and think they are a new type of page (they've been around under other names since 2001).

If you run across anyone who doesn't understand the role of outlines on Wikipedia, Wikipedia:Why do we have outlines in addition to...? might help reduce their misconceptions or uncertainties about outlines.

On the bright side, you've got to see this...

To add the outlines and related support pages to your watchlist (takes less than 30 seconds), cut and paste them from Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist. For a way to improve the display of your watchlist – by namespace (very useful) – see Watchlist sorter, or use the "super fast upgrade" at WP:OTS.

Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes (currently without the talk pages) and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu on the sidebar on the left side of your screen.

The big push

The big push started with about a thousand banners and notices being placed on article talk pages all over Wikipedia.

But it didn't stop there...

Welcome our new members...

The following Wikipedians have joined the OOK team.

Be sure to stop by their talk pages and introduce yourselves.

Enter the mentors!

I asked a bunch of mentors at WP:ADOPT for advice. Several of them answered on my talk page. Most of those who replied were happy to help, and posted some very good ideas. A couple even joined the project.

Here are their ideas, and what is being done about them. A few of the tasks still need volunteers:

Linking to outlines has begun

To the tops of about 30 subject articles, I placed a test batch of hatnotes leading to the corresponding outlines. The hatnotes look like this:

For a topical guide to this subject, see Outline of X.(Hidden: <!- PLEASE LEAVE THIS LINE IN PLACE because it leads to the page that serves as the table of contents for Wikipedia's overall coverage of this subject. Thank you.-->

The rationale for the hatnotes is that each outline is a topical guide for its subject, and since tables of contents go at the front of a book, a link to each outline should be placed at the front of its subject.

Unfortunately, not all editors agree. Some of the hatnotes have already disappeared.  :(

Some past discussions pertaining to the existence or location of outlines

Note that the "Lists of topics" are of two types, including outlines and indexes, so discussions to remove, move, or merge those are usually relevant to the OOK. Also, outlines are a type of list, so discussions that affect lists in general also pertain to outlines. We've got to be on our toes!

I've excluded links to live discussions, out of respect for WP:CANVASS.

Table of contents to OOK-related stuff

Here's a directory of outline support pages:

Keep up the great work!

Florida Schooner

I think we'd have a pretty good shot at a fair use rationale. I think we've both searched extensively enough to reveal that there are no free images available of the storm damage. I would personally call the image "historically significant," but I'm hardly an expert on fair use. I'd recommend posting at WP:MCQ and seeing what the regulars there have to say. Cool3 (talk) 16:32, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

I've uploaded a slightly different version of the image, cropped around the schooner so that it shows less of the background (File:Florida Hurricane Schooner.jpg), which I believe would go better in the article. If you think we need to, I could also shrink the resolution, but I think it's acceptable as is. If you agree that this version is an improvement, then we can add it into the article and delete the other. If you prefer the other version, then you can delete the one I just uploaded (consider it a G7). Cool3 (talk) 18:41, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Cuban schooner floirda storm.gif

Thanks for uploading File:Cuban schooner floirda storm.gif. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 18:06, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

A couple of weeks ago, you deleted this article per an expired prod in which I proposed. User came to my talk page expressing his disappointment in the deletion [2] and [3] (I just remembered this situation when another user came up to me today about another AFD). I directed the creator to talk with you about restoration of the article in some sort, but that has not happened. Usually, this is the same as contesting a prod a the opposes after the deletion. Is it possible that we can have the article restored, and if I feel it still does not meet the notability guidelines, take it to AFD if need be? Thank you, MuZemike 21:36, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

A. Andrew Gonzalez article deletion

Hi!

I see that you've deleted the A. Andrew Gonzalez entry. I would urge you to do any level of research into the Visionary Art Movement. You will find that he's one of 5 or 6 artists considered to be in the vanguard of the movement.

As for the tone of the article, I would be happy to change the tone if I could ascertain exactly what's wanted. Alternatively, feel free to "mercilessly edit" the entry or to assign another editor to do the same.

However, if you still feel that the entry doesn't merit Wikipedia inclusion, I will abide by that. I did not create the entry, and I suspect that someone will nominate him for inclusion again at some point in the future. Puroprana (talk) 16:50, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

A. Andrew Gonzalez sources

Thanks for your quick and friendly reply. Have you looked at the Publications section? He's included in several collections of the top visionary/fantastic artists, as well as in an international visionary/fantastic encyclopedia. His work was shown at a number of publicly funded museums and galleries in Australia and is in the collection for the upcoming Nederlands visionary and fantastic art museum. The 2010 calendar of his work being released next month will be available at Barnes & Noble, Powell's Books, etc. I'm honestly confused. What would constitute sources establishing notability in an art movement this new? Thanks in advance for your time. Puroprana (talk) 17:38, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline collaboration!

As you know, Penubag is working on a banner to advertise the Outline WikiProject. And he's almost done.

The banner prominently presents the "Outline of chocolate", which of course will become the most widely advertised outline as soon as the banner goes live. The first thing many editors will do after seeing the banner is look for that outline.

The problem is, we don't have one.

So that's our first outline collaboration!

I started a draft this morning.

It needs to be finished and moved to the article namespace before we can start using Penubag's banner ad!

Come join in on the fun. It's chocolate!

The menu shows up when you are in edit mode, but it will not work if you are in WikEd.

50-tasks-in-one, revised

Original task

The links List of x-related topics have all been cleaned off of the state historical outlines. (Deemed irrelevant, I guess).

These "List of x state symbols" articles still have them, and the links mentioned above need to be changed to "Index of x-related articles":

Arizona • Arkansas • California • Colorado • Connecticut • Delaware • Florida • Georgia • Hawaii • Idaho • Illinois • Indiana • Iowa • Kansas • Kentucky • Louisiana • Maine • Maryland • Massachusetts • Michigan • Minnesota • Mississippi • Missouri • Montana • Nebraska • Nevada • New Hampshire • New Jersey • New Mexico • New York • North Carolina • North Dakota • Ohio • Oklahoma • Oregon • Pennsylvania • Rhode Island • South Carolina • South Dakota • Tennessee • Texas • Utah • Vermont • Virginia • Washington • West Virginia • Wisconsin • Wyoming

(not the red ones, of course)

There are more, but those will take a manual search. I'll handle that, or will assign it to someone else. I need to save you for the AWB tasks coming up.  :)

Regarding your deletion of "Noted American Poet R.M. Engelhardt"

To Editor Mr. Julian Colton,

Hello Mr. Colton, how are you?

I recently noticed that you have deleted an old high school-english student of mine, a well-known and widely published poet-writer named (Robert M.) R.M. Engelhardt from your Wikipedia listings and I am very disappointed by this action since Mr. Engelhardt is a poet of note and has been published in over some 100 journals & zines in the US and abroad, on the internet and mostly in print.

And also, please Note regardless of your reasons, many well known "living writers" have a presence on Blogs & MySpace as well as other social media at this moment and your assumptions are seemingly generalized. If you do a google search, here is only a fraction of what appears.

So, to help you out here is a compiled list of some R.M. Engelhardt's status in the world of poetry and a few of his achivements and I hope that you will reconsider your actions soon. This was taken alone from one of his poetry links with permission.

Thank you,

Mr.David Marhaffer Teacher-Retired Albany, NY

Concensus doesn't matter when wp:v says the exact opposite. wp:v is one the 4 most important policies on Wikipedia along with wp:npov, wp:nor, and wp:blp. If concensus was to keep vandalism or a copyright violation, consensus would also be trumped. -- Jeandré, 2009-06-06t14:13z

The body count keeps on rising. I've found a second death related to the storm, that of Joseph Cormier (I've added the info into the article). That's a pretty interesting case with the Sheriff's Department calling it storm-related and the Coast Guard saying it wasn't. In any case, I think you should add a footnote to the death toll in the infobox saying that there were two deaths connected to the storm at least indirectly. I'm not quite sure what the convention is on placing the number of indirect deaths directly in the infobox, so I'll leave you to mull over that. Cool3 (talk) 04:51, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Timothy Zahn's upcoming book?

hey Julian,

why did you delete the page about author Timothy Zahn writing a new Star Wars book to be published in 2011? it is true. i read about it on a few Star Wars websites. How is that being a 'crystal ball' when Del Ray says it's true?? Zahn is going to write a followup to Allegiance. just because you aren't interested doesn't mean other people won't be.

(i don't understand the MT 53 2 (talk) 20:35, 12 June 2009 (UTC), so i am doing the best i can with this direction, i gues it's wiki markup?) MT 53 2 (talk) 20:35, 12 June 2009 (UTC) MT_53_2

Allow me to answer for Julian here. I guess you are referring to Untitled 2011 Timothy Zahn Star Wars Book? Yes, it is true that this will be published eventually. However, our "crystal ball" policy refers to the fact that almost nothing about it is known at the moment. Once details are known and published by reliable sources (not "few Star Wars websites"), it's perfectly fine to have an article about it. Wikipedia is just not a place for speculation and at the moment, there is nothing but speculation on this book. Even to Wookiepedia entry for the book is tiny at best and they are really really Star Wars crazy over there (I admit I am too^^). So just be patient, we can have an article about the book if there is something definite to write in there. But unless there is, the fact that it will be written can be (or is) mentioned in Timothy Zahn and Allegiance (novel). Regards SoWhy 20:46, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Please moderate the Regine Velasquez page. So many false claims, there are no citations.

So many users in that page keep on putting false claims about Regine Velasquez' achievements and talent, to the point that they make up fake 'achievements' about her so-called 'reign'. Velasquez is not famous all over the world, she has not sold one million records all over Asia. They keep sensationalizing her page by writing over hyped and false claims such as having a 'palatial house', albums selling over 10X platinum, that Regine rejected the Miss Saigon role, and so much more. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.104.22.195 (talk) 22:48, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

How are you going to merge that exactly?

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Other characters of Xanth How exactly would you merge it? The names are already there, just not the summary of them. You can't fit a summary of all the characters listed on that page. That's why there are many side articles listing the various groups. This group was for those notable characters who didn't fit in another character. Please look at the articles, and the list at the bottom of this article listing the other character list pages. Dream Focus 00:20, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

I was wondering the exact same thing. Other characters of Xanth is made up of characters that don't really fit into the other character pages such as Magicians of Xanth, Family of Merlin of Xanth, Family of Ebnez of Xanth, Family of Humfrey of Xanth, Centaur family of Xanth, Goblin family of Xanth, From the Gourd of Xanth, Mundanes in Xanth, etc, which are then all linked from List of Xanth characters. This particular collection of pages really is more of an expanded glossary than individual list type articles. It certainly would be nice to have some footnotes on each page noting where the various characters were written about though. Tothwolf (talk) 03:21, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Wikipedia Deletion, R.M. Engelhardt

Mr. Colton,

I was told by two different friends, one an old teacher of mine & the other a fan of my work that my Wikipedia page has been deleted. To be honest, I may be a writer-poet but I have no idea how to go about re-establishing my information on here so please bear with me. I attemped to edit my page but realized that due to guidelines an author cannot submit his own work so I deleted the information.

So below, please find my current as well as updated information for any re-establishment of my page and I appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Again,

Thank you.

Need some advice

Hi Julian, needed to talk to someone to gain perspective and I'm not trying to canvass support. I recently had an item AFD'd which I understand happens. The edit summaries struck me as uncivil and I posted to Wikiquette alerts. During the process something was said that upset me further. I posted a hastily made and hotheaded response. Later I settled down and restated and expanded my answer. Do you think that I should leave my previous response alone, apologize for the outbust or take a wikibreak with a good single malt? Shinerunner (talk) 12:55, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply Julian. The matter was marked as stuck – which is just as well. I've extended thanks to the other contributors to the discussion save the one that irked me (he wasn't even the other party to the dispute). I think that with him I should probably avoid to keep my blood pressure down. The other party never responded but if contacted I'll try to swallow a big chunk of crow. I think the bottom line is that when I make my edits or edit summaries I'll remember this and try my best not to possibly upset another editor. Thanks again Shinerunner (talk) 20:53, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your vote. I must agree with it not being stable. I tried my best to keep it such, but I failed. Thank you for your time, the vote, and the protection.--WillC 00:56, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
No I'm fine with it. I'll begin work on it in a subpage if I'm not blocked. I just wish the user involved would unwatch the page. Because from now on, every change I make will be watched by him. It is alright, I would have opposed it myself, just too bad it will fail for something I have no control over. I'll probably wait near a month before renominating that way it will be stable.--WillC 01:24, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I see you have put some note on your reversion of my edit of the above. Are you a Moderator etc? Does your note mean that if I revert your edit, I will be suspended etc? The edit concerned was discussed at some lenght here: Talk:Commonwealth of Nations. The "dispute" is about the insistence of 1 or 2 editors on putting "joining dates" on the membership of the Commonwealth of countries like Canada. They do not provide proper sources for their edits. Can you help resolve the dispute or does your edit mean that the inaccurate "dates" must be included and my view that they should not be included should be "excluded". I do not want to get in trouble. Regards. Redking7 (talk) 19:42, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I have moved the discussion from Talk: Commonwealth of Nations to Talk:List of members of the Commonwealth of Nations. As you can imagine, the latter (a spin off page of the former) gets far few visitors, so the extent to which there will be "discussion" will probably fall off accordingly. Pretty silly move really. Either way, I guess the fact that no sources are offered doesn't matter – I shouldn't take this too seriously. Its an amateur organisation. Regards. Redking7 (talk) 20:49, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Nevermind, I noticed you're using Huggle. Actually looking at and considering the individual edit before mindlessly reverting and liberally handing out a user warning is obviously too much to ask of the average Huggle user, seeing as this exact thing happens all the time with no immediate corrective in place and any attempt at mutual education being construed as incivility. In that case, have a nice day, Julian. And always keep in mind the invaluable systemic lesson which Huggle implants into all its users: The ability and willingness to read is not a prerequisite to edit Wikipedia. 78.34.201.30 (talk) 20:55, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

We might be turning a corner, just so you know. So far, none of my attempts at improving the urban heat island have been reverted. A good sign. I'm trying very hard to keep the edits as non-controversial as possible. Thegreatdr (talk) 17:53, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Help requested

Hi Julian. About two weeks ago, you asked me if I needed help with implementing and updating ArticleHistories of recently passed GAs. I've been keeping on top of that. However, I've encountered another task for which I need help.

In some featured topics, none of the articles in those topics have oldids for when they were promoted to featured topic status (see for example Talk:Timeline of Mary Wollstonecraft). I've been adding these oldids—using Dr pda's articlehistory.js. If you can help out, that would be great. I'm at history right now (the hurricanes took a while). Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 14:55, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline update – Full Steam Ahead! - 06/18/2009

Several members of the WikiProject have been hard at work.

Buaidh has been building and refining the outlines on the U.S. States, the states' historical outlines, and the Historical outline of the United States. Lately, his edits have dominated the project's watchlist readout. (I think he's overdue for a barnstar or two. hint hint)

Penubag has been working on medals for all the main branches of the OOK, and has completed the OOK WikiProject's animated advert banner (see below).

Highfields has been filling in the currencies for each country on their respective outlines.

NuclearWarfare and Thehelpfulone have been busy with WP:AWB, posting banners and notices, and helping our sister project, the Index WikiProject, get established. Indexes work hand-in-hand with the outlines and are prominently linked to from the top of most of them. And the outlines, which serve as tables of contents, are only as good as the pages they link to.

Since we started integrating (linking) the OOK and its support pages into the encyclopedia and into the Wikipedia community, activity on outlines has been increasing. Though there's still much left to do.

But I digress. There are a couple more...

Welcome our new members! Stefan and MacMed

Stefan is building the Outline of sharks.

MacMed has joined our advanced wiki-tools team, and is currently adding links to outlines in the corresponding subject articles' see also sections.

Be sure to stop by their talk pages and say "hi".

WPOOK's advert banner has gone live!

Penubag has finished this WikiProject's animated advert banner, and it is now being displayed on the Wikipedia ads template which in turn is displayed on about 2000 user pages. Each time someone access one of those pages, there is a 1 in 184 chance of them viewing this:

If you'd like to display the banner on your userpage locked-on to the ad as above, use the following code:

{{Wikipedia ads|ad=184}}

(By the way, it's been awhile since we've barnstarred Penubag).

Watchers needed!

If you haven't already, please add the entire project's watchlist to your watchlist. Here's how:

From the edit window, copy and paste Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist into your raw watchlist.
Or go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge/Watchlist using Related changes and click on "Related changes" in the toolbox menu in Wikipedia's sidebar on the left hand side of the screen.

Check the watchlist every time you log on!

I forgot to mention this step above.  :)

The OOK is in 5 other Wikipedias?

I can't make heads or tails of 'em, but these links were on Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge:

Resurrected from the grave yard...

I discovered an AfD discussion on possibly the first article named "Outline of", which was called Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics, and which was created 4 years ago. Of course they deleted it. But now it has many friends, and so it has risen from the dead.  :)

See the DRV discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 June 7#Outline of Islamic and Muslim related topics.

Advice from the mentors

  • Astatine-210, Strdst grl, and Willscrlt – link to the outlines from the corresponding subject articles' see also sections – this is underway by MacMed (non-country outlines) and User talk:NuclearWarfare (counry outlines).
  • Astatine-210 – add a link to the outlines to the disambiguation pages of the corresponding subjects – good idea. Since "Outline" is just the type of page, not the subject, I think these might qualify for inclusion on disambiguation pages. We need someone to look into the relevant guidelines on this.
  • SimonTrew – provide a badge (userbox) for WPOOK members to add to their user pages – Penubag will have one for us soon.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf – create a card explaining outlines, and send it to everyone you know, and make it viral (by including a request for the recipients to send the card to everyone they know) – this task has been split in three:
  1. Creation of a "thank you for your interest" card which introduces (explains) outlines, to send to queriers, new participants to discussions, those who seem to be confused about outlines, etc.
  2. Creation of a thank you card / invitation to the WPOOK, to send to users we see working on outlines, including a request for them to invite others whom they think might be interested
3. Creation of an invitation to Wikignomes, with a brief rundown on the types of tasks there are for them to do on the outlines. The invitation will include a request for them to invite anyone they think would enjoy working on outlines.
  • weebiloobil – add examples to Wikipedia:Outlines – more examples will be added as suitable outlines are completed
  • weebiloobil – add a picture to Wikipedia:Outlines (it doesn't have to be relevant), to provide atmosphere and to break it up visually and add a splash of color – will do, and we'll add a caption to make it relevant, with a link to the outline on that subject. Thank you for the idea.
  • Zachary crimsonwolf – ask Jimbo Wales to bestow the award(s) for the country outlines contest, once you get it going first – we'll give that a try
  • Zachary crimsonwolf – ask everyone in the project to inform their acquaintances around Wikipedia about the OOK – will do, as soon as the cards
  • UzEE – collaborate with all the WikiProjects you share scope with – we've placed a banner on their talk pages, and have placed task notices on some. We'll be posting more tasks, and plan to create a section on contents system development and maintenance for each WikiProject page itself.
  • SriMesh – if you can't get outlines added to next year's WikiCup, then create your own WikiCup-like contest – there's 6 months left to this year to address reservations and work out the details at WikiCup. In the meantime, there's the 200-WikiProject contest, which needs input.

Question about Rollback

Hi, thanks for allowing me to use the rollback feature – I'm still trying to understand how it works and just had a question if you can answer... if you rollback on someone's edit to an article, it rolls back all the way to the first edit they ever did on the that article, or will it only rollback to their last consecutive edit? I sometimes find a page where a vandal blanked a section of an article, and might have done it multiple times in a row deleting parts of the article at random, and someone else comes in to fix the article, but only did so by fixing the last immediate edit the vandal performed, so there are still parts missing. Also lets say the vandal hit the article again after that. If I rollback on the vandal's latest edit, will that also revert all their previous edits, even rolling back on others attempted fixes? Abandoned footwear

Regarding your decision: "Closing debate, result was no consensus", what does it mean?

  • There were/are 9 "keep", 5 "delete" and 1 "redirect". No, there was no unanimous point-of-view, but my understanding is that one does not need unanimous support to reach consensus. So that begs the question, what criteria does one use to decide if consensus has been achieved?
  • Now that you have closed it, what happens next?

Thanks in advance. Please reply here. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 06:19, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Possible commons adminship

Julian,

Thanks for suggesting it. I'm touched.

I do have a lot of responsibilities, between creating new NRHP articles, the things I do offline (more this summer than usual), adminship here and oversight. But there are some reasons to consider it all the same (I had been considering asking for trusted user status for a while anyway, to review Flickr submissions if nothing else). I guess I am involved enough in the Commons community, and there's been a fair amount of discussion lately on some of the mailing lists about other people's issues with the Commons community, which led in turn to suggestions that people who have problems should get themselves more involved. Maybe this is a sign. Daniel Case (talk) 14:22, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Exactly right. It's sometimes difficult to find a helpful and friendly admin over there. It's good when you know someone, but not everyone has an in. If you perform over there like you do here, it would most likely lead to a at least a little bit less frustration and maybe a few more noobs staying and becoming productive members of that community. wadester16 17:51, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Abdul Basit (terrorist suspect). Could you please userify the article, its revision history and talk page to User:Geo Swan/review/Abdul Basit (terrorist suspect)?

FWIW the nominator failed to honor the recommendation of the deletion policies and advise the article creator. FWIW I regret that none of the more experienced participants in the discussion thought to do so, and that no one added the deletion sorting stub for terrorism to the {{afd}} page.

Sorry to be a pain but I've nominated 50 Cent for a GAR and I've somehow managed to stuff things up. I noticed it when I went to template an editors talk page with this;

50 Cent has been nominated for a good article reassessment. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to good article quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status will be removed from the article. Reviewers' concerns are here.

As you can see, this is nearly what I wanted, but there is a red link for "Reviewers concerns are here" which I don't think is supposed to happen. Also, isn't the review supposed to automatically come up on Wikipedia:Good article reassessment? Because it hasn't. I've obviously stuffed something up, but not sure what, any help would be great appreciated. Thanks, Aaroncrick(Tassie Boy talk) 01:41, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Wind: Checking prose length on an article

I've added about 20% more content to wind due to FAC suggestions, and am trying to stay under the word cap. So far, I have only one support, but no opposes, which is a good thing. How do I check that out, short of counting the words manually? Thegreatdr (talk) 19:42, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Very nice. That did the trick for wind. Why is it that the TC article count seems way low? It looks like it's only highlighting 1/4 of the available prose. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:54, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Maybe there is something wrong in the code of the page, as you said. Global warming has a smaller version of the same word count problem, though it doesn't have a table. Thegreatdr (talk) 19:58, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
That could be. Thanks for your help. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:06, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the support vote. This whole cite web, cite book, cite journal thing has been quite confusing, but I think I finally got it. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:43, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
It's been difficult this time, because I'm used to the TC project providing more input during FACs, such as occurred with the tropical cyclone and List of wettest tropical cyclones in the United States. Extratropical cyclone had fewer issues, but I believe the standards were lower for FAC three years ago. Thegreatdr (talk) 20:55, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Also, in a bit of ridiculous related news, due to the recent expansion of wind while in FAC, it satisfied the 5x expansion portion of the DYK rules so I briefly submitted it. The problem was, the 5x expansion has to occur within 5 days. It took this one 93! Thegreatdr (talk) 22:19, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Saudi Aramco Beach

Geozeyad (talk) 14:45, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Hello Juliancolton

May be I am still newbie here but I do not think the deletion of the above page is justified. the beach is very well known and owned by famous international oil company with multinational employees!

Just for a comparison and in the same area there is this page which is only a new land to be a residential district in the future:

King Fahad Suburb

but the Saudi Aramco beach is more than 50 years with a fence and 24 hour security patrol.! many retried workers from USA, UK, Canada, Philippines and Egypt will be interested about the article since they have a years of memories in this beach others also will benefit from the information provided!! http://colorabian.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/half-moon-bay-aramco-beach-on-the-persian-gulf/

I hope for a consideration of the deletion decision, many thanks

Outline collaboration #2: Outline of Gibraltar

This outline is approaching completion.

I added a bunch more links, finding them with the following Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia:

(You can use the wikicode for the links above as the basis for new searches – just replace "Gibraltar" with any other country or region name).

Request: please redirect the redlinks! (bluelinking...)

The redlinks need to be bluelinked where possible. The most useful way is to create redirects leading to the material (which is usually included in a section of an article – see Wikipedia:Redirect#Redirects to page sections. That way, when the redirect pages are replaced by the actual articles, the links will already point to the right places.

Please take a crack at it, and bluelink a few.

Thank you.

Good luck.

Have fun.

Can you help me out with the SWAT article?

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with something on the SWAT article. Recently Benny 919 made a large edit to SWAT which was most certainly a good faith edit, but in it he deleted a huge number of references (over 3,000 characters) with no stated reason for why and without making any claim that the refs were invalid (and previous talk page discussions have reached the consensus that the refs are valid). There have been two edits made to the page since then, so I can't undo his edit, and I don't really want to manually re-add the refs. I would like the page to be reverted to the edit by 66.57.22.222 on June 21, but I don't have rollback rights so I was wondering if you could help. Do you have a bot account yet?

Hi Julian,

I don't remember, did you ever get approved for a bot?

My mailing list has grown to about 50 people, and it's getting cumbersome for me to send the Outline Updates. And the list will keep getting bigger and bigger.

Also, I need to contact the 60 members of the Countries WikiProject again. The last time I did it by hand using Linky.

And it's time to invite the Wikignomes, Wikielves, and Wikifairies to our party. Yes, all 2500+ of them!  :)

There are more notices to go out to the 200 or so country wikiprojects.

And for the drafts, we need to post banners and notices to the corresponding subject article talk pages and corresponding Wikiproject talk pages.

And that's just for starters.

Thehelpfulone hasn't been around much, and NuclearWarfare is overloaded.  :)

We can't let things slow down.

On the contrary, we've got to speed them up even more!!!

I look forward to your reply.

P.S.: If anybody else is reading this and has a bot account, please contact me ASAP. WP:WPOOK needs all the help we can get.

Bot account

eh, that kinda fell apart, primarily due to my cluelessness around technical stuff. I could use AWB to deliver the newsletters though. –Juliancolton | Talk 18:33, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

AWB is a bot. It just needs to be activated. And for that you need bot approval. It's easy! See:
For your first request, make it for newsletter delivery, for the WP:WPOOK and for others upon request. That should go through without a hitch. There's a place on the standard form to indicate that you'll be using AWB.
(Once you have your initial approval, it is even easier to get new tasks approved for it. But we'll deal with that later).
Send me links as you go through the process, so that I can comment if needed.
Good luck. :)
Have fun.
The Transhumanist    18:54, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
P.S.: while waiting for bot approval, you can still use AWB manually. But you'll enjoy it much more if AWB is working in the background automatically while you are doing your thing on another window! They don't call it multi-tasking for nothing.  :)

Thomas Ricciardi

Greetings, I'm not familiar with the inner workings of Wikipedia regarding how information is edited and maintained on the site. But I did notice that you have removed the information about Thomas Ricciardi that apparently was once posted to Wikipedia. I also see that it was removed because of content violations of some type. Was there any actual information in the posting that was useful? I'm looking for any factual information I can find about this person for research on a project I'm doing for fun (I am trying to learn about the "who's who" of La Cosa Nostra in America – a bit of a hobby you might say). Any information about this person you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

AFD close, should it be salted?

You closed the AFD on Trail Blazers Street Jam. How many times has it been deleted previously? If the number is more than 2, would you mind salting it? tedder (talk) 00:33, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Prying this open again- just FWIW, I thought it had been deleted more. That's because it has been created as Trail blazers street jam. A new one was pasted in there today. Note it's the same user who created the capped version above, which had to go through an AFD first. (I'll watch your userpage, you can reply here) tedder (talk) 16:35, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

You seem to have made a mistake in deleting this article, and I think restoring it would be a good idea. About a week ago, when I stumbled on the article (or what little was left of it, the pink log entry), the Google cache was still visible, showing a reference to an entry in the American National Biography. This was one of two articles started by the same user and nominated for deletion by User:Tedder, see User talk:Tibalandre. The other article appears never to have been deleted. The user starting these pages has not made any contributions since the deletion. I don't care much for short articles with little to no content when created by people who ought to know better, but I think one should be more lenient with very new users. And from what I could tell from the Google cache (not sure if it reflected the very last version of the page), the deletion reason was downright wrong. I have no access to the ANB, but it is published by the Oxford University Press, and appears to be the American equivalent of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and similar European biographical reference works. Surely an entry there is a "reliable sources to indicate notability of an individual"?

Getting back to this again today, I found a newer article on the same topic, Robert R. Church, Sr., but it turns out to be plagiarised from one of the linked sources. That, on the other hand, needs to be resolutely deleted and the user warned that plagiarism will lead to eternal damnation in hell, hairy palms or some other unpleasantness. --Hegvald (talk) 17:35, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Kingdom of León in leonese language

Sorry for my English.

In the article Leonese language. It is doing what I think it's a sabotage. In the current administrative division of Spain is not the Kingdom of Leon, not as a province or autonomous region or any other administrative division. The Act is set as a reference, in 1830, was repealed many years ago (the current administrative division was 1983 in 1976 following the arrival of democracy to Spain).

In the Spanish wiki nuna this user who want to put this information here has done there, because he knows that is false. Are taking advantage of the ignorance of the English language that many Spanish users could report in a neutral manner and are attempting to enter false data.

In the Spanish wiki you can check or that such data have not been introduced or have been removed.

We step by step, we start with this.

Outline update – Push push push – 06/25/2009

Work is proceeding apace...

New members
Hatnotes

The current consensus is that we can't place a hatnote leading to an outline at the top of a subject articles unless the outline being presented is of at least the same quality-level as the article.

What's next...

Improve outline quality by completing them.

Place hatnotes for the outlines of high enough quality.

Guidelines pertaining to outlines need to be updated. Outlines emerged as a class of pages only a few months ago, and most of the relevant guidelines don't cover them specifically. For example, Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists is incredibly out of date.

Invite wikignomes, wikielves, and wikifairies (all 2500+ of them) to help on the outlines .

Identify 600 more subjects with coverage extensive enough to justify outlines, create rudimentary drafts for them, and post notices to the corresponding WikiProjects and subject talk pages to help build them.

Convert outlines titled "List of" to outline articles, and add them to the OOK. There are a few hundred of these. Conversion instructions are needed.

Add a description of outlines to About Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Basic navigation, and add tips about outlines to the WP:TOTD and Tips library.

Keep up the great work!

Wirtland

Just curious, instead of no consensus, why not relist? Aside from the meatpuppets, there were only three editors participating in the debate. Nyttend (talk) 00:59, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

(Since the discussion was spammed on external sites, SPA/sockpuppet !voting would have likely continued even after the relist. As such, I think it's better to wait a few weeks and re-nominate it then. –Juliancolton) I see that even after approval some strong wording is still being used here, such as spam and meatpuppets, which is not only groundless but actually sounds insulting. Also, the author of article about historic house "Wirtland" used his Wikipedia adminisrator's rights to move the micronation entry to "Wirtland (micronation)", and to name his article as "Wirtland". In result of this operation, the search for "Wirtland" in Wikipedia now leads to the house, not to the micronation as before, and the same happens in the Google search, creating confusion. The administrator explained his action as follows: "...moving to make way for clearly notable topic", which appears as a case of subjective judgement of prioritization, when a single administrator decided which entry is more notable, according to his/her personal tastes. However, it is not our wish to waste your or our time on complaints, even if justified ones.
Wirtland stated that "As an internet-based community, Wirtland attaches high importance to being properly represented in the internet encyclopedia". Bearing in mind Jimbo Wales' principle "Newcomers are always to be welcomed", we were excited about publishing our article in Wikipedia. However, so far we have faced a lot of resistance, and very little welcome.
If there is anything about our article which is unacceptable for Wikipedia, please tell us exactly what. So far we have seen only subjective attacks, which were not founded on any clear and open rules. We have seen that some articles are considered notable, and some not notable, without any explanation. A 19-century house in rural USA is more notable? Ok, maybe, just tell us why. You want to renominate our article? Fine, just tell on which ground (or does Wikipedia arbitrarily renominate any entry?), when, and for how long. While Atlantium article is fine with Wikipedia, Wirtland seems to be permanently under attack...
I am sorry for being a bit over-emotional, but I hope our disappointment is understandable. We came to Wikipedia with friendly and open mind, and were ready to cooperate, but we won't insist. To be short: We will remove our entry if it contradicts Wikipedia's rules. We will appreciate to see a clear, official, conclusive, final answer. Of course we reserve our right to discuss such an official answer in a public forum. Thanks. Witizen (talk) 18:49, 27 June 2009 (UTC)Witizen.
(Sorry? I have no opinion on the contest itself, so to be honest I'm not quite sure why you're trying to convince me. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:31, 28 June 2009 (UTC)) I have written to you for two reasons: 1) You are the person who approved our entry (lifted the nonination for deletion). So, apparently, you're one of decision-makers; 2) You have suggested to "wait a few weeks and re-nominate our entry". If I am wrong in contacting you I apologize. In that case I'd appreciate if you advise who is the right person to address my message to. Thanks. Witizen (talk) 15:05, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Witizen.

Hi Julian. You may be terribly busy, in which case feel free to disregard this, but you made some initial comments at the John Wark FAC, I was wondering if we'd dealt with them and/or if you had any others comments or suggestions? The nomination has become a little stale so I'd just appreciate some reviewers returning for a second look. Cheers! The Rambling Man (talk) 14:41, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I really don't think this one should have been closed no consensus. If anything, it would have been better to relist. But the sources listed in the AFD, which by the way were not put into the article, are trivial mentions. The one that looked like it might feature the subject (example 2) is not accessible. Would you consider reopening this AFD to allow for further participation? لennavecia 16:40, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Your block of User:Readin

Was wrong. Readin is an established editor with several years of history discussing subjects. The other part of that revert war was a non-discussing pseudo-bot making POV terminology changes against agreed naming conventions touching hundreds of articles in a day. When established editors get blocked for trying to maintain agreed naming conventions, is it any wonder when they leave? SchmuckyTheCat (talk)

They are free to seek assistance from other editors at various venues when another editor is causing a problem, so there's no need for them to feel discouraged or to have to revert war. Eh? I'm afraid I don't follow. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:39, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm unclear far too often. Let's try again. IMAO: there was some subpar behavior in that AfD. "Cruft" may or may not be intended to be degoratory, but its users know that it'll be taken that way, and we had one count of "non-notable plotcrap." In this kind of cases, closing with a note that such editors are getting their way despite and not because of these remarks could improve the atmosphere in the future. Implicitly accepting their behavior makes them feel vindicated and is humiliating to the editors who worked on the article.

This is all academic. I don't blame you, and being too careful to avoid giving that impression made my previous message incoherent. --Kizor 09:16, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

"Sarcasm" has such a bad reputation. Can we settle for "compassionately exhasperated"? Badger Drink (talk) 20:03, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Precisely. The result of the RfA is more than clear, and to simply pile-on with another oppose is both disrespectful to the candidate and of little value to the discussion, in my opinion, unless the voter has additional input. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:06, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Can you out the above article back? It had links to other pages, it was verified, can't see why it was removed, especially as much of the text from my book on Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell has been lifted without permission and appears on Wiki pages on the Campbells and Blue Bird and Bluebrid vehicles. I have also been accused of "vandalising" the Reid Railton, I removed a reference to a book by Barry Stobart-Hook. I did this after contacting Wiki, as Railton's daughter strongly disagrees with the content of this book and wishes to discuss it with Mr Stobart-Hook. I expalined this and was told to remove it, I then got quite a rude message telling me to leave it alone!!

I am quite happy to proof read land/water speed related articles, but having my many years of research "borrowed" is a tad annoying!!

Many thanks

Steve Holter Article/Reid railton Article

I understand your comments fully, the article was written about me, (with links to Blue bIrd, Arthur Benjamins, British Racing drivers etc, it was verified, can't see why it was removed, especially as much of the text from my book on Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell has been lifted without permission and appears on Wiki pages on the Campbells and Blue Bird and Bluebrid vehicles. Only the info' lifted for the Rolls-Royce R type article has any acknowledgement!!
