Tiny categories
Can you stop creating tiny categories such as Category:Japanese expatriates in the Spanish Empire? A proliferation of 1-member categories is of no use to anyone and you must have created thousands of them. I would echo the comments made above by user:Fayenatic london - your categories are often wrongly named, often duplicates of others you created earlier, often given too few parents (so they don't appear in the correct trees), often mis-spelt and articles you place in the categories often need extensive research to justify. Eg Category:Expatriates in the Dutch Empire should be in Category:People of the Dutch Empire, which you would realize if you took more care and looked at Category:Dutch Empire. Eg Category:Expatriates in Portuguese Angola which you created a year ago has no Portuguese parent at all and only 1 member; and yet you also created Category:People from Portuguese Angola which has in all 2 members. Eg Category:British people in British Taganyika is wrongly spelled, there is no Category:British Taganyika. neither is there Category:British Tanganyika, but there is Category:Tanganyika and Category:Tanganyika (territory): so, no category description, wrong spelling, missing parent, wrong name, and a meagre 3 articles. You are not listening. You have just created Category:Military leaders from the Russian Empire, with 1 member and only one parent and not bothered to check: there is the extensive Category:Military leaders of the Russian Empire (which you also created). - I am trying to do my best with these categories. I have consistently tried to respond to issues. I have tried to respond to everything you have brought up. I am trying to categorize in reasonable ways based on existing categories. I have moved the article to the other category you mention. It is very hard to follow which categories will us of and which will use from. The parent category is Category:People from the Russian Empire. I was trying to pattern this category on that. The issues with misspelled categories you brought up in your last post I fixed. I am trying to work within the system and be helpful. - Category:Military leaders of the Russian Empire was created as Category:Imperial Russian military leaders back in 2012. That was over 10 years ago. The Russian Empire categories have gone through multiple renames since then. Category thoughts
On further thought I have decided the migration within an empire or from the Metropolis to a colony should not be categorized as emigration. In general the people involved should be just placed in categories for both places if their time in both is enough to be defining, or in categories for only the place that is defining. A few times such as [[Category:British people in colonial India]] (which may not be ideally named), this connection is sufficient enough to have a category for. Other places, it is probably not. Moving forward as I come across articles I will try to categorize based on this understanding. As part of this I am thinking that because of speacial relationships between colony authority and the colonies, it might be worth having categories that cover such as above, but I do not think the reverse needs to be categorized at all. Thus I am thinking that Category:Expatriates from British India in the United Kingdom may not be a justified category, although because of its size it may be possible to have it. What we have to be able to answer is "if this was 1939, would we be willing to create a category Category:Expatriates of British India in the United Kingdom, or would it seem as odd to us then as Category:French Polynesia expatriates in France seems to us now? There may be a very small window where we could justify having such a category even if it would seem odd in 1939 (the Ottoman Empire categories would probably all use Turkey if Wikipedia had been formed in 1910, but events since then make it so using Turkey to refer to the Ottoman Empire leads to too much ambiguity to be justified). Still, in most cases I do not think people from a colony going to the base country is defining, India may be an exception, but I would think in the cases of people from the British West Indies it might not be at all. At least not until after the end of British rule in a particular place. There might be case by case exceptions. I do not however think we would have Category:Montserrat expatriates in the United Kingdom and so moving back, I do not see an easy way to justify such categories for people from other parts of the British West Indies. Now a person who lived for 25 years in Montserrat and then 25 years in England may well belong in both Montserrat and English categories, but I do not think in that case we need a category for moving between the two places. - One issue that may have to have a deeper discussion, is are there times when movements are defining because they are inherently hard, even if you do not cross an international boundary. Time may play a role in this. Montserrat and French Polynesia to the United Kingdom and France is fairly easy today, due to air travel, but it was a different story in the past. So maybe there are ways to see movement to and from past colonies in a different light than we would in the cases of current dependencies to the controlling country. I am thinking not, and so will not for the time being make any new categories that cover such movements. Many such categories are currently being considered for up merger. Thoughts on Immigration and emigration categories
Some thoughts on immigration and emigration categories have occurred to me. The first is that these are two different categories. While it makes sense to have say Category:Italian emigrants to the United States we do not have to always place them together when the flow from country A to country B is small. So for example separating out a category like [[:Category:American emigrants to Algeria]] into its two parents makes sense. This is especially true because doing so allows us to avoid several other issues. First it allows us to categorize people who the article does not really say when they emigrated. We may know that they were born and raised in the Ottoman Empire, so they belong in [[:Category:People from the Ottoman Empire]] or an approriate subcat, and we may know they became a national of France, so they belong in [[:Category:Immigrants to France]], but the article may not make it clear when they came to France, so that we can not be sure it was while the Ottoman Empire still existed. The other problem this change solves in difficult cases is what of the person who was born in the Ottoman Empire, flees in the midst of war to Romania, then lives for a while in Germany, then when other things change there they come to France. In some rare cases we may have someone who so clearly becomes German that they would count as a German emigrant to France, but in other cases that might be overstating things, so if we have them in the emigrants from the Ottoman Empire, immigrants to Germany and immigrants to France categories that may make sense. In other cases the person might not count as a true immigrant to the intervening places. Clearly we only need to put in intervening places that are defining. Some of this needs to be considered on a case by case basis. However we need to keep in mind direct placement in say Emigrants from Germany or Immigrants to France is allows an option if the other end of that immigration or emigration flow is not clear.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:24, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- We have an awful lot of small immigration categories. Of the 192 sub-cats of Category:Immigrants by destination country, 42 of them have 3 or fewer sub-cats themselves. A few, like Category:Immigrants to Palau and Category:Immigrants to Cape Verde, have 1 sub-cat which in turn has 1 article. I think the assumption has been that the immigration and emigration trees are well developed trees that allow for indivdual exceptions to small cat rules, but I am thinking such a view would need to be determined by review of the individual trees and not the full tree.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:30, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
North Macedonia
I asked this on the talk page for North Macedonia. I am posting it here as well. Do we currently consider North Macedonia to be the name of the country that came into existence in 1991, and thus North Macedonia and North Macedonian to be the proper way to refer to that country and its residents and nationals at all points from 1991 on? My largest concern is in regards to emigration categories, and since pre-1991 emigrants belong in the Yugoslavia or early country categories, I only need to figure out about 1991 on for that purpose. I am wondering a little if we had a writer who lived in modern North Macedonia from 1945 until and early death in 1985, would it still be best to call that person a North Macedonian writer? If my sense that the intended scope of North Macedonia is at least the whole history of the place formed by the breakup of Yugoslavia, I think there are several categories that might best be given a different name than they have. Although many of the at least emigration categories are so small that unmerging may be the best option. We have Category:Immigrants to North Macedonia put not Category: Immigrants to Macedonia. Category:North Macedonia emigrants has a total of 4 articles, the to the United States subcat has 3 articles and the Canada sub-cat has 1. Category:Macedonian emigrants has 14 populated sub-cats. The largest, the one for those to Switzerland has 7 articles. Assuming there is no overlap in contents, there are 40 articles in the tree. There is no where anything that indicates what the difference between these categories is, and it does not appear that the 2008/2009 decision to change the official name of the country as seen as a change in any meaningful way as to the status of the country. We do not separate emigrants from Siam/Thailand based on that countries name change, nor do we separate those from Burma/Myanmar based on that name change (we may based on the change of status at the end of British colonial rule, but that is not when the name of Myanmar starts). We do separate Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, but that is a name change that represents lots of other changes. We do have categories that refer to Ceylon and Sri Lanka, but for people we do not break them out based on when the name change occurred. In years cats we do use Republic of Macedonia and then North Macedonia, changing in 2010, but I think the Siam/Thailand and Ceylon/Sri Lanka precedents are good examples of this. If we do not want to just use North Macedonian emigrants as a category for emigrants all the way back to 1991 I think we will need a less ambiguous name for the category. One big reason to not break emigration categories along name changes that have no boundary or political effect and are literally just a name change is that they do not really effect emigration flows at all, or the status of anyone. - Well, on further review, Category:Macedonian emigrants to the United States has only 1 article. I mainly did not remove it to avoid emptying the category. The person Mike Zafievski, came to the US in 1969 and is already also in the Yugoslav emigrants to the United States category. Of the 3 North Macedonia emigrants to the United States articles, one came in 2000, one was here by 2007 or so, and the last we just know he came "later in life", and know he is alive, but have no birth date listed. That last, Vladimir Cetkar, we might not really have enough information to place him in the North Macedonia category.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:28, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

- The one person in Category:Macedonian emigrants to Finland is Berat Sadik, whose family immigrated to Finland in 1989 when he was 3. His parents are in the article described as "Albanian", so they were ethnic Albanians living in the Macedonian Socialist Republic in Yugoslavia. It would seem he would belong in Category:Yugoslav immigrants to Finland, but that only has 1 article and so is likely to be upmerged. - I misremembered a key detail. North Macedonia is evidently adopted as the name by a treaty that goes into effect in early 2019. So if we are going to use that year as the cutoff, it is not clear that any emigrant would go in that category. by nationality, by country and by ethnicity
I just realized we have by country, by ethnicity and by natonality trees. Sometimes we have a child in a by ethnicity cat, with a parent in a by nationality cat. We even have Category:Medieval people by country or nationality. Some of this is a result of the terms being ambiguous in actual use, and so I am not sure it is fully solvable. [[:Category:Writers by former country]] makes sense, in especially since in some of these cases "nationality" is not the right word to group these subjects of a past polity. The largest sub-cat of People by former country, looks to be Heads of state of former countries at 208 cats, while even military personnel by former country only has 41 cats. We have 268 countries that we have categories on people from, although I am not sure we always are clear how the various categories interact. People by former country is a sub-cat of People by historical ethnicity, which has 21 cats, although there are some in both, and some odd interactions. Hurrian people is in People by historical ethnicity while Hurrian Kings is directly categories as part of people by former country. Then there is [[:Category:Indigenous Tasmanian people]] which is listed as a case of People by Histrocal ethnicity, but somehow has at least one article on a living people in it. Either the ethnicity is not hisorical, and it should be moved to People by ethnicity, or it is historical, and living people should not be placed in it. (I guess in theory it might be possible to have a nolonger extant ethnicity with living people who were once part of it, but I am not sure we have envisioned a clear enough case of renouncing ethnicity to have that). I think some of this might also lead into the fact that being of "German ethncity" is not the same as being "of German descent", but the line between the two if sometimes very, very hard to define. Was Martin van Buren ethnically Dtuch or was he just of Dutch descent? There are huge numbers we could ask about. Also, is it possible to be part of an ethnic group at one point in your life, and then later just be of that descent? I am not sure some of these questions are answerable at the individual level. There are about 363 sub-cats of People by ethnicity that refer to specific ethnicities. Interesting, there are significantly more ethnicities than nationalities. Floruit
Floruit (also written fl) pretty much means that the dates given are not the dates of someones life. The first date is almost never the birth date, and one should not think it is. I have seen articles where that is included before that dates after the birth name, and the years are then used as the birth and death year categories. This should not be how such is treated. There are tons of Latter-day Saint lawyers, very many of whom are law professors or have been law clerks. This article just describes a guy with a job. If there is something notable it's not evident in the article.
