Harold Shurtleff

Harold Shurtleff was when I found it an article that focused only on him being an artist who competed in the Olympic Arts competition. Shurtleff seems to have been much more important as a historian. His book The Log Cabin Myth: A Study of the Early Dwellings of the English Colonists in North America seems to have been a very widely reviewed book when it came out in early 1940. His full name was Harold Robert Shurtleff. I have tried to add some more sourcing, but there is probably more out there I have not yet found.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:22, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Categories (again)

I raised concerns a month ago (to which I never received a reply, as far as I can tell, you just removed the post) about you replacing incorrect categories with less specific ones, rather than the correct ones - but you are still at it. If I see it again I will have to raise it at ANI. GiantSnowman 16:35, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

  • I am trying to avoid unilaterrally declaring articles in a specific birth category. I have previously been taken to ANI by people complaining about me putting articles in a new specific category without making sure that the new category was justified. Moving categories to less specific categories that cover what is mentioned here seems to me to be a safe revision that avoids declaring one category right. It allows people to easily see that there is some less than clear knowledge about what birth category the person belongs in, and leaves it clear to other editors that there may be a need for further research to determine which specific birth category is needed.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:38, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
If the article says somebody is born in 1883, it should be categories in category:1883 births. It should not be in category:1880s births. If you are not comfortable with this then I politely suggest you stop your little task GiantSnowman 16:40, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
    • The previous discussion I was attacked for moving an article in exactly the same situation, because I was said to be ignoring the possible history of why the article was in a category other than what the article text said.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
I doubt you were 'attacked', but such edits should not have been brought to ANI. The birth year category should match the birth year in the article; if that happens to be incorrect, then so be it. Both can be corrected when new sources are found. Furthermore, adding '1880s births' category does not deal with the apparent problem - what happens if it turns out somebody was actually born in 1879? GiantSnowman 16:46, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
Here is some quotes from that ANI "I noticed this editor on John Pack Lambert's talk page; they were constantly repeating the question What research did you do before you made your edit to the category? despite it already having been answered with I assume text is more correct, especially when there are multiple statements in the text.
I don't know much about categorization policies, but it did come across as uncivil WP:BADGERing. BilledMammal (talk) 14:06, 1 July 2022 (UTC)"
    • So some people clearly felt that what was being thrown at me there was uncivil. I was even told "JPL, I think you should change your approach and here's why: what you're doing is like clearing a bug report without fixing the bug. If the text and category don't match, at least we are aware of a potential error. If you always match category to text, yes that's technically within policy, but it's not a good idea anyway." So yes, there clearly are those who feel that intentionally matching the category to the text when they do not match is not a good thing. I will in the future try to find more information on when the birth was, and based on that I will try to make the text of the article reflect what that source says. Henry McKenzie was an attempt to do that. It has since been edited to not make any statement about when he was born.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:56, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
