None of those are compelling reasons, and I think are disruptive. The immigration category does not make the distinction between "direct" and meandering. Furthermore, if you have a problem with a small category, you should not be circumventing the deletion process. Given your ban from deletion discussions, you can bring the category to the attention of an admin or really anyone rather than deleting out of turn. Mason (talk) 12:19, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

        If you think he counts as a Canadian immigrant rather that an Expatriate, that fine. However, you haven't engaged with the point of the problem. One of his defining characteristics is being a British emigrant to Tuvalu. Someone who is a British emigrant and an immigrant to Tuvalu belongs in the intersection category, as long as that category exists.

        You do a lot of thoughtful work, but please don't keep making these out of process category changes, it is really disruptive. Mason (talk) 14:38, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

        • • I think after 10 years of Canada saying he is either Canadian or Britosh is in both cases over stating what we really know. I think we are best only stating what we clearly know. Those facts are he was a British emigrant, that he was an immigrant to Canada and that he was an immigrantvto Tuvalu. Anything beyond that is making claims about his identity that we do not really know. I have seen cases where someone moved from the Russian Empire to Germany, lived in Germany a decade or more, and then came to the US. They were placed in both the Russian emigrants to the US and German emigrants to the US cats. Both are overstating what we actually know.                           Let me phrase. It doesn't matter if he's residing in Canada long enough to be a Canadian. His defining features are that he is British and that he's emigrant to Tuvalu. Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Category:Illustrators ftom Austria-Hungary, please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. This was an inadvertent typo. Such things happen a lot when one is editing using a cell phone. I much prefer to edit using a computer because typos happen less often. Anachronistic place names

We should not apply plave names to people bwfore those places existed. In both India and Germany we have huge numbers of people in categories for being from sub-national units that only existed after the person in question died. This is paired with an even more widespread imposing of current place names on historical places that the place names do not fit for.

In places like Siam/Thailand and a few others we have a place changing its name, but it remains the same. In India though the Bombay Presidency was not equivalent to any modern state. Bombay State was cut in half to make Maharashtra and Gujarat. However the Bombay Presidency also included other areas ending up in other states.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:29, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

If a person lived in Bombay Presidency they should be in Category:People from Bombay Presidency, not for the Category for a place name of a district sub-national unit that only existed after they died. Small emigrant categories

we have far too many small emigration categories that make navigation harder not easier. I think we would be wise to agree on a minimum size for emigration categories, and upmerge any category that does not have at least some number of entries. I think 5 is a good number. We could upsurge the smaller ones so they are in X country emigrants and Immigrants to y country but not a combined category for both traits.John Pack Lambert (talk) 14:51, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

• If we drop the Kingdom of Bavaria from this name it will not be obvious that this is meant to be limited to people who left the kingdom of Bavaria. I have tried with the Bavarian emigrants to the United States to limit it to people who left the Kingdom of Bavaria, and to remove those people who were leaving far more recently, such as multiple people who left in the second half of the 20th-century. At issue is that Bavaria the article is an article on the state as it exists today. If someone emigrates from Germany to the United Kingdom today, or did so in 1992, we do not want to have them end up in Bavarian emigrants to the United Kingdom, just because they lived in Munich before they Germany, or even if they lived in Munich all their life before leaving Germany. This is only justifiable during periods of time when Bavaria is a distinct state, with distinct political relations with others. Emigration is at heart a movement from one political unit to another, and so emigrant categories need to be tied to those politcal units. The term Bavarian is not primarily used for residents of the Kingdom of Bavaria, to exclusion of those who lived in Bavaria when it was fully part of larger political entities, so we need to make clear what is meant when we have Bavarian in the name. The actual expericne of people putting people who left after World War II in categories with just the Bavarian name, which is not at all what is meant to be covered in this category, shows why we do not want to use the Bavarian name alone. The article in question is Kingdom of Bavaria and we have :Category:People from the Kingdom of Bavaria which this is a well named child of. It is really the other emigration categories that need to be renamed, not this one.
  • In short with emigrants from the Kingdom of Bavaria we want to make it clear they were leaving the Kingdom of Bavaria, an indepdent state, and not the modern German state of the same name, because if they are leaving the modern German state of Bavaria they would be placed in Bavarian immigrants. We no more would have Bavarian emigrants for those from the modern German state, than we would have Texan emigrants, for people who leave Texas, although it would be justified to have Emigrants from the Republic of Texas, for people who left the Republic of Texas when it was its own seperate country, although I am not sure we have enough article on people who left the Republic of Texas during that time to justify a category. However we would not call people who left the Republic of Texas "Texan emigrants" and just hope that people would not place emigrants later on from Texas under the US in it. • The main point is to make it so we do not place people leaving Germany today in the Emigrants from Bavaria category. I think Emigrants from the Kingdom of Bavaria does it most effectively. I a mnot convinced that it makes sense to treat emigrants from the Electorate of Bavaria as a distinct group from emigrants from the Holy Roman Empire. However from 1806-1815, and from 1866-1871 the Kingdom of Bavaria is a fully independent kingdom. From 1815-1866 it is part of the German Confederation, but that is a very loose grouping of states, and so it seems justfied in that period to categoize emigrants by the state they are leaving. I do not think we want to categorize by their state any German emigrants after 1918, and have doubts we really want to do it after 1871. I think for now the actual size of our emigrant categories means we really do not want to subdivide Category:Emigrants from the Holy Roman Empire by any of the state of the Holy Roman Empire.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:28, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

  Both of the people in this category came to the United Kingdom before 1871 so they were keaving an independent Bavaria. Someone has pointed out I created some other categpries back in 2010. To call all people in the Russian Empire just "Russian" goes against the fact many would never have identified as being Russian. They were Ukrainian, Tatar, German, Latvian, Finnish, Polish and many other things. That's why I suggested two alternative processes that might help you in the future. 1) you check the logs, and 2) my suggestion that we start creating redirects for any categories that you creates to prevent having to keep remerging categories. • For what it is worth in August 2022 the category People from Prussia was renamed to Category:People from the Kingdom of Prussia. That discussion had 3 editors involved not counting the closing editor. It looks to me like at present the Category:People from the Kingdom of Prussia functions as the only parent cat to various Prussian subcats. I noticed that you created a category Category:Wanga Kingdom, and only added the category Category:Africa, which isn't really a helpful category [3]. I think in the future, it would be really helpful if you add at least two categories any time you create a category. And I also think it would be beneficial to the project if you only make categories that you can add 5 or more pages to. I know you have the habit of only adding one or two people to a category before moving on. I think if you identified 5 pages before you made the category, that would help a lot.
