License tagging for Image:Judith-novel.jpg

Hi there, I saw you ignored my edit comment regarding a revert of a previous edit made to this article. The notable alumni list is growing into an example farm. Actually, it already is one. I've not reverted your new addition to this list, but have instead raised the issue on the article talk page. Luke Kelly & Deirdre O'Connell

Are you a fan of Luke Kelly and Deirdre O'Connell? I saw you made some edits on both of their pages. (Red4tribe (talk) 04:49, 23 April 2008 (UTC))

Yes, I'm a fan of Luke Kelly for many years. My interest in Deirdre O'Connell comes from my admiration for one of her first students, the actor Tom Hickey. Although Luke is rightly acknowledged in Ireland for his tremendous contribution to music here, Deirdre is less well remembered and that is why I created the Wikipedia article. Irish/British

Hi Jim, I noticed you repeatedly changed A.J. Potter's national categorisation from British to Irish. Don't know who often you may have done similar things in other articles. Please note that Potter was born in Belfast in 1918 and therefore had a UK passport. I know that "British" may include England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland. Yet I think in this case a British category is not wrong. User:Ser Amantio di Nicolao this morning (9 June 2015) included a British category in about 30 articles relating to Irish composers (on my watchlist), all historical people, where this is justifiable, don't you think? Hi again. I changed my mind. Actually, you are right. A few minutes ago I asked "Ser Amantio" to stop installing "British" categories where Irish people are concerned. Ireland may have been part of the United Kingdom, but it certainly never was "British". I will delete those British categories in all Irish composer articles. Thanks for clarifying this. The question came up several years ago when someone tried to reclassify as British anyone born in Ireland prior to 1922. That category includes among many others Patrick Pearse and former Taoiseach Jack Lynch. Thankfully common sense prevailed.Jim Bruce (talk) 08:41, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, I reverted your edit in which you added the adjective 'British' to the introduction of this article. Although born in England, Acton was from an Anglo-Irish background and spent most of his life living in Ireland. Perhaps you added 'British' to the descriptor because of Acton's place of birth? The rest of the Acton article provides his residency details so I don't think it is necessary to classify him as Irish or British in the first sentence. What do you think? The name of Cecil Sheridan's wife

I was reading <<On reflection>> written by Cecil Sheridan's son, Noel Sheridan. The part which is called "The Head"(pp.153~164) of the book was dedicated to his father Cecil. I found the name of his mother not Ann Doyle but Nan Doyle on the page of 159. Where did you get the name of Cecil's wife? Can you double check it? 선의의 바람 (talk) 01:02, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Quite often 'pet names' or nicknames are used instead of proper names. In this case, Ann Doyle, as she was before marriage, was apparently known within family circles as "Nan". I found this information in the entry on Noel Sheridan and Cecil Sheridan in the Dictionary of Irish Biography. I have altered the Wikipedia page on Cecil Sheridan to clarify his wife's name. Brian Cleeve

I reverted your edit because the new cateogory does not seem appropriate. Cleeve opposed apartheid when he lived in South Africa between 1948 and 1954. That's what led to him leaving the country and settling in Ireland. He was never a public opponent of apartheid after that. So I don't think he fits well into a category that includes 'activists outside South Africa noted for their opposition to apartheid'. If you think a more precise categorisation is required "White South African anti-apartheid activists" would probably be better. Otherwise I suggest leaving the article where it is. Yes to the first question, if you mean publicly opposing apartheid. While he lived in South Africa he was a vocal opponent of apartheid. That's why he had to leave. He may have remained opposed to apartheid after that, but he did not, as far as I know, continue as a public activist. This sub-category includes a lot people who never lived in South Africa, but who opposed apartheid from afar. Cleeve was the exact opposite. Am I pedantic to suggest that the sub-category is being loosely interpreted? Genuine anti-apartheid activists such as Trevor Huddleston are included along with people like Bruce Springsteen and Idi Amin! Not your doing I know. Just venting my frustration. Jacob's award

Hi, Jim. It's actually a good article (well done) and I was glad to see it there, years ago. Although the article needs citations, I don't dispute any of the contents, which are accurate. It's just that the citations are missing for what I described as the "bulk" of the article, by which I mean most of its length contains lists of awards (sections Winners – multiple awards and Winners – full details), only a handful of which have citations. Thanks for your comments. I suspect the longevity and success of the Jacob's Awards was entirely due to Frankie Byrne. When she died so did the award show. What an amazing woman she was. I think I see why you added that tag to the article. When I listed the winners for each year I stuck a single citation at the end of the list. The reference in question is usually a newspaper report of the ceremony listing the winners. So I didn't think it necessary to put the same footnote after each winner's name. Maybe I should? The summary list at the top of the article is drawn from the individual years' reports further down. Perhaps I should also add the same list of references to these?
