hortuculture? horticulture?

Hi, in the article Grex (hortuculture), is the disambiguation an obscure scientific term I don't recognise (and not in the Oxford English Dictionary), or a non-British English spelling, or just a typo for "Horticulture"? PamD (talk) 16:20, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Walpers? Mueller? Rchb.f....Mea Culpa!

I have been using the treatise on the genus Epidendrum of the Orchidaceae found in Walpers Annales Botanices Systematicae Volume 6, and find that I have mistaken the authorship. The online web page where I found a copy gives the author as Walpers. However, he died in 1853. Volume 6 is dated 1861. The title page states "...AUCTORE DR CAROLO MUELLER...", which would seem to suggest that Carl Müller wrote it. However, I overlooked the statement in the preface:

Spero fascculos sequentes nunc brevissimo tempore sequuturos, tum clarissimi Reichenbachii Orchidearum recensionem, tum clarissimi Anderssonii Graminearum collectanea exhibentes nec non indicem generalemgenerum, speierum et synonymorum orbis totius peracti. [emphasis mine]

Furthermore, on page 933, at the end of the treatise of the Orchidaceae, is the subscript

Sed haec hactenus.  Proxima serie, fato favente unus nostrum, seu amicissimus cl. Carolus Müller, se ego, reliqua publici juris facturus est.
    Rchb. fil
[bold in the original]

The next page begins the discussion of grasses.

So, the author in all cases is Rchb.f., not Müller.

Oops! Guess I'd better fix it.

sections

Hi,

You don't understand nomenclature yet. That's okay, you'll learn. Meanwhile, please restrain yourself from reverting the people who do.

Racemosi may well be a section of subgenus Spathium, but in accordance with Article 21.1 of the International Convention on Botanical Nomenclature, "The name of a subdivision of a genus is a combination of a generic name and a subdivisional epithet. A connecting term (subgenus, sectio, series, etc.) is used to denote the rank." That means that section names takes the form "Genus sect. Section", and the subgenus doesn't get a mention. Those are the rules. I didn't write them.

The Truth

The "Vienna Code" (a recent bit of legislation, not science) states in Article 21:

DIVISION II. RULES AND RECOMMENDATIONS CHAPTER III. NOMENCLATURE OF TAXA ACCORDING TO THEIR RANK SECTION 3. NAMES OF GENERA AND SUBDIVISIONS OF GENERA Article 21

21.1. The name of a subdivision of a genus is a combination of a generic name and a subdivisional epithet. A connecting term (subgenus, sectio, series, etc.) is used to denote the rank. Note 1. Names of subdivisions of the same genus, even if they differ in rank, are treated as homonyms if they have the same epithet but are based on different types (Art. 53.4), the connecting term not being part of the name.

21.2. The epithet is either of the same form as a generic name, or a noun in the genitive plural, or a plural adjective agreeing in gender with the generic name, but not a noun in the genitive singular. It is written with an initial capital letter (see Art. 32.7 and 60.2).

21.3. The epithet in the name of a subdivision of a genus is not to be formed from the name of the genus to which it belongs by adding the prefix Eu- (see also Art. 22.2). Ex. 1. Costus subg. Metacostus; Ricinocarpos sect. Anomodiscus; Valeriana sect. Valerianopsis; Euphorbia sect. Tithymalus; Pleione subg. Scopulorum; Euphorbia subsect. Tenellae; Sapium subsect. Patentinervia; Arenaria ser. Anomalae; but not Carex sect. "Eucarex".

21.4. The use of a binary combination instead of a subdivisional epithet is not admissible. Contrary to Art. 32.1(c), names so constructed are validly published but are to be altered to the proper form without change of author citation or date of publication. Ex. 2. Sphagnum "b. Sph. rigida" (Lindberg in fvers. Frh. Kongl. Svenska Vetensk.-Akad. 19: 135. 1862) and S. sect. "Sphagna rigida" (Limpricht, Laubm. Deutschl. 1: 116. 1885) are to be cited as Sphagnum [unranked] Rigida Lindb. and S. sect. Rigida (Lindb.) Limpr., respectively. Note 2. The names of hybrids with the rank of a subdivision of a genus are formed according to the provisions of Art. H.7. Recommendation 21A

21A.1. When it is desired to indicate the name of a subdivision of the genus to which a particular species belongs in connection with the generic name and specific epithet, the subdivisional epithet should be placed in parentheses between the two; when desirable, the subdivisional rank may also be indicated. Ex. 1. Astragalus (Cycloglottis) contortuplicatus; A. (Phaca) umbellatus; Loranthus (sect. Ischnanthus) gabonensis. Recommendation 21B

21B.1. Recommendations made for forming the name of a genus (Rec. 20A) apply equally to an epithet of a subdivision of a genus, unless Rec. 21B.2-4 recommend otherwise.

21B.2. The epithet in the name of a subgenus or section is preferably a noun, that in the name of a subsection or lower subdivision of a genus preferably a plural adjective.

21B.3. Authors, when proposing new epithets for names of subdivisions of genera, should avoid those in the form of a noun when other co-ordinate subdivisions of the same genus have them in the form of a plural adjective, and vice-versa. They should also avoid, when proposing an epithet for a name of a subdivision of a genus, one already used for a subdivision of a closely related genus, or one which is identical with the name of such a genus.

21B.4. When a section or a subgenus is raised to the rank of genus, or the inverse change occurs, the original name or epithet should be retained unless the resulting name would be contrary to this Code.

E. sect. Racemosi

I've deleted the category per your comment on the talk page.

I've also restored the subgenera category text to User:Jay L09/Epidendrum subgenera. I apologise for deleting that. I did try very hard to retain all the information that you posted here while I was cleaning it up; I must have overlooked that one. As a rule, category text should only be a few sentences. If you want to contribute extensive notes on Epidendrum subgenera, you should create a separate article for it; perhaps List of Epidendrum subgenera. Or you could handle it all the ranks in a single article Taxonomy of Epidendrum. Or, if this all follows a particular arrangement, such as that of Reichenbach, you might consider creating Reichenbach's taxonomic arrangement of Epidendrum. An example can be found at Bentham's taxonomic arrangement of Banksia.

Categories for discussion nomination of Category:Juglans sect. Rhysocaryon

Category:Juglans sect. Rhysocaryon, which you created, has been nominated for deletion, merging, or renaming. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the category's entry on the Categories for discussion page. Thank you. I know that taxonomists have created this subgeneric divisions and it's excellent that the main Juglans articles describes this. The point is that these categories are too small and will remain too small for Wikipedia's categorization scheme. 21 species is a perfect size for just a single genus category without subcategories. It's only with larger, more complicated genera that subgenus or section categories become necessary. Please weigh in at the discussion linked in this section. McNamara, 2010

Hi,

Based on your recent comment at the RSN, do you have access to McNamara? I agree it could be a good source, but does it talk about coconut oil specifically? The abstract just mentions palm oil. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 17:05, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All I found was the abstract, which only mentions palm oil. There is, however, a bigger debate: saturated fatty acids vs. trans-fatty acids (or fats naturally low in unsaturation vs. partially hydrogenated fats). Thus my suggestion that this reference be used together with two others as the basis for a new and completely different article. — Jay L09 (talk) 17:20, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you're talking about Saturated fat and cardiovascular disease controversy? That's a page that needs to be moved to user space and worked at for a while I think. The structure alone makes me cringe. I'm not opposed to McNamanra being used, but the way it was used previously and it's focus on palm oil makes me reluctant to endorse it's use on coconut oil. WLU (t) (c) Wikipedia's rules:simple/complex 17:53, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you for looking up the page. It would not be new at all. I too would cringe at the use of this reference on coconut oil. I would also hope that it would not be used on palm oil. — Jay L09 (talk) 18:22, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
