Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia with this username. This is because your username, Ircpresident, is contrary to the username policy. Wikipedia does not allow any sort of “official” accounts. Also, per WP:PAID, you are required by the terms of use to disclose if you are receiving compensation of any kind for your contributions..
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:27, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

ircpresident is my nickname ever since I entered online, it is not related to any organization. You can check my twitter, linkedin and Facebook for example which have the same userame, ircpresident. I believe this block is collateral damage.

@Beeblebrox: </nowiki> Thank you @ToBeFree: for entrapping me to get myself blocked.

I’ve just unwiki’d this as you are now unblocked. I’d like to be clear that ToBeFree’s main concern when filing the username report was that someone might be impersonating you. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:25, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock discussion

@Beeblebrox: Having met Ircpresident in RL, and knowing them on Facebook and Twitter under that name, I can vouch for the above grounds for appeal. Furthermore: blocking a six-year-old, active account on this basis is uncalled for. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:54, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Willing to reconsider the username issue, but we also need to address the WP:COI and WP:PAID issue as noted in the block notice. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:58, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was never paid to contribute to Wikipedia, in fact, I repeatedly refused numerous offers to write articles for money.Gohary 21:06, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also it suddenly looks like I won’t be around most of the rest of today so any reviewing admin is free to do as they see fit. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:59, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is an organization called the "International Rescue Committee" and it has a President. Unfamiliar readers might think that this account is associated with that office. That said, this username has existed for awhile. Perhaps it should be discussed at WP:RFCN? 331dot (talk) 21:01, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In my 18 years of having this nickname, I was never mistaken to be a president of any organization Gohary 21:04, 18 October 2018 (UTC), and this is a 10 year account.[reply]
Perhaps we should have 331dot blocked to prevent confusion with this commercial outfit? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:14, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Beeblebrox: Ircpresident doesn't need to address WP:COI nor WP:PAID since you have provided no evidence to support blocking on either basis. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:10, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please clarify how you were trapped (actually, entrapped) by ToBeFree. @ToBeFree: This has a bearing on whether or no I endorse unblock. Please elucidate.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:01, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was asked to send an email to verify my official representation of Global Voices in a talk page. Once I sent the email I was instantly blocked. Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 01:08, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for being so honest. I'll leave the others to open up this particular Pandora's box. It seems to me, and this is only my opinion, that WP:PAID does apply, even if you are not a president. That you edited a page with which you are connected is enough. Intrigued that those who vouched for you personally don't seem aware of this minor detail.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:23, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So editing a page to include a reference about allegations of sexual misconduct now counts as paid contribution? Wow, just wow Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 01:26, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Owuch. did not see that. Maybe not then. There are enough admins cluttering up this page already. I am leaning toward endorsing unblock based on the username issue. We need to settle the PAID issue, but you make a good point.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:29, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Could you provide the dif for the sexual misconduct edit? I'm using a really old computer and it's been dying for years. On the other hand, I did not see anything overly WP:COI about the edits I saw.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:35, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is the first time I edit on phone as I am away from laptop, will try. It should be on (talk) about Stalin K entry. Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 01:39, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
LOL. Yeah. Been through those as best I can with this thing wheezing and coughing. The dif for the particualr edit would be helpful. I'm really getting close to endorsing unblock with a WP:PAID disclosure.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:41, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't even do an edit myself. To Be Free reverted an edit and I protested because the revert removed all text about the allegations including removing the references. Here is the link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/864670021 Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 01:45, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That was all irrelevant to the PAID question of editing about your organization. You did out yourself, though. I just don't otherwise see the WP:COI in your editing.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 02:04, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Based on my limited review and the above discussion endorse unblock with recommendation that user disclose PAID relationship over which they already self outed. TBH, if it does not show up in the editing, it's probably overreach to make COI an issue. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 02:04, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, on mobile and early at morning. This escalated quickly. "Ircpresident", per my UAA report, is a name representing a person who is well known under that name on ircpresident.com and as a verified Twitter account. They have left me a message on my talk page claiming official representation of their company. All I personally want is a confirmation that the person is actually the person they are claiming to be. This has, from my personal side, never been about forcing a nickname change. It is about OTRS verification.

About e-mail: Does this really have anything to do with a sent e-mail as I requested on my talk page? (Please see my talk page for my exact request.) This is probably rather caused by my UAA report. I believe an e-mail verifying that you are Ircpresident on Twitter would cause this block to be removed and a OTRS verification message being added to your user page.

I am specifically not "entrapping" anyone, and I have not been engaging in off-wiki communication about or with Ircpresident.

It's just the wrong block template, it should probably be uw-ublock-famous. The resulting message a) matches my request wording on my talk page and b) explains the actual problem that caused me to report the name. The e-mail, if you sent one, has probably not even been read yet (?) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 04:13, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dlohcierekim Beeblebrox this needs confirmation that it came from UAA please ~ ToBeFree (talk) 04:16, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Knowing User:ircpresident since 2014, I can vouch that Gohary is not just a long time open internet/knowledge activist associated with many like-minded organizations including Global Voices. Gohary has helped promote Wikipedia and its pluralism through his work at Global Voices and outside. It is very uncalled for to device organizations that have acronyms like IRC. For the sake of argument, I'd say IRC is known as Internet Relay Chat in the Wikimedia community more than any other organization. Also, mere accusation of paid editing is sad. I understand the community takes great care to distinguish between volunteer and paid editing, but Gohary is not someone who is hiding under the shadow and editing. There are many Wikimedians like myself who know him personally, worked with him. --Psubhashish (talk) 04:26, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see where the PAID complaints come from, the user has openly disclosed their identity on their user page. About the UAA report, see Special:PermanentLink/864685302. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 04:31, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"All I personally want is a confirmation that the person is actually the person they are claiming to be." No it isn't; since that's not what UAA is for. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:48, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

arbitrary break in wall of text

(edit conflict)@ToBeFree: Thanks. Ah, the plot thickens. He admits to the Gobal Voices. Then we have Pigsonthewing vouching for him. Yeah. That's him at the website or he's an imposter, but Pigs confirms. So now we have the user name = website problem. Thanks for making this all clearer. IRC, if you follow the WP:OTRS instructions to confirm you are you, that might unmuddy the waters. I guess. To be clear, though, you outed yourself claiming your Global Voices connection. That raised the issues of WP:COI and WP:PAID. In any event, the user name, that you've had for 6 years is non compliant with our user name policy. It all adds up to a big mess. But none of this is ToBeFree's fault.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 04:37, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hah. Learned this from an unhappy block appealer. (Never dealt with it before.) Per WP:UPOL-- ". While plain domain names (without .com, .co.kr, etc.) are sometimes acceptable, such as when the purpose is simply to identify the user as a person. . . ."-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 04:48, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hat's off to ToBeFree. If you have not done so, you can confirm your Identity by emailing info-en@wikimedia.org. This should alleviate the user name problem. It takes time though. The volunteers there have too much to do.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 04:53, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Dlohcierekim: I can confirm that he did so at this ticket. –Ammarpad (talk) 07:22, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"admits" is unnecessarily pejorative; the appropriate word is "disclosed". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:48, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I believe if the block template is wrong then the block should be automatically discarded. But anyway, is there anything else I should do? Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 13:17, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, no. Sorry we are going through this. Just wait for all of the admins who review this to think it all through.
  • endorse unblock The upshot of the protracted discussion above is that I think our concerns are answered. While it is true that this is the name of a website, it is the user's personal website and is no more a username violation than if he used hisrealname.com on the website. I do not see any COI editing except for where he disclosed his connection on ToBeFree's talk page. I see none of the hallmarks of PAID editing. Will seek further discussion from the other admins who have been here. Leaving unblock on so that another reviewing admin can accept if they wish.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 14:11, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    @Beeblebrox and 331dot:-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 14:18, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    An unblock is OK with me. 331dot (talk) 15:13, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ack!

Er, no. Please remove the "follow me} part. The rest is compliant, but the follow me looks spammy and coi.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 14:36, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's perfectly acceptable. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:10, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Dlohcierekim: You need to unblock me first though. Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 15:33, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Love to. We are generally cautious about reversing one another. It would be better to await Beeblebrox or await a consensus here among any other admins.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 16:49, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It may have got lost in the shuffle above but I did try to make it plain I was ok with any admin undoing the block if they were satisfies it was not needed. I was unexpectedly busy yesterday and I just woke up half an hour ago. (It’s barely 9AM where I live.) It looks like everyone is ok with an unblock so I’ll go ahead and do so. I do apologize for the block template, I can see that I shouldn’t have used that one as even with my attempt to customize it for the situation it was not really on point and neither was the auto-generated block reason that came with it. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:21, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You more more need to remove "follow me" from your user page than do any of these people: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&limit=250&offset=0&ns2=1&search=%22follow+me%22 -- Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:39, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's moot. Unblocked. Welcome back. Sorry for the aggravation.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 18:10, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Global Voices (NGO), you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. MarioGom (talk) 13:55, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

AbdelRahman Mansour

Hi, you did not include an edit summary when you reverted my edit at AbdelRahman Mansour and I was wondering what your reasoning was. In my edit summary I included a link to WP:INFONAT which states that the use of the nationality or citizenship parameters should be avoided in infoboxes if it can be inferred from the country of the subject's birth. As he was born in Egypt and it does not state in his article that he has dual nationality I don't think there is a reason for the parameter to be used. Suonii180 (talk) 15:29, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Suonii180! Sorry about that. So yes, he an Egyptian citizen born in Egypt, however he didn't reside in Egypt for a long time and he is not in a position to return sometime soon as the situation with most Egyptian activists living abroad who are associated with the Egyptian revolution. As with other activists, it is highly probably to acquire other/additional citizenships when that's possible. Stating his nationality here should mean that he is an Egyptian "till now", especially with the widespread (relatively speaking) Egyptian government practice of revoking citizenship from activists. I hope that helps! :) Gohary; Talk to Gohary; Gohary's edits 22:23, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
