Non-free image use

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to a page, specifically General Secretary of the Communist Party, may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:05, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Native name template

Hello, why are you removing {{native name}} from infoboxes in country articles? It's needed for accessibility reasons among otherthings. Also, as a non-native English speaker, you shouldn't even be trying to make edits like this. Graham87 13:58, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Graham87:
  • The country itself only has one native language, so it might not necessarily to add it for indicating the language. It's not like Switzerland which has many native languages.
  • Maybe I'm wrong. I saw it at General Electric
Hddty. (talk) 14:21, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is no reason to not mark the language up. Could you restore your native_name changes to the way they used to be?
  • I don't know if it's just me, but "nor" seems very pompous to me in modern English. I've removed it from the General Electric example. Graham87 15:05, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I support removal of this native names, this marking is like for mentally ill people, which should use sign language Wikipedia.--ThecentreCZ (talk) 01:24, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@ThecentreCZ: I assume by "mentally ill" you mean people with an intellectual disability rather than a mental disorder, and sign languages are mostly used by deaf people. Consensus for such a sweeping change should be made at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries. Graham87 09:09, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with your mass changes to the way the infobox is laid out in multiple articles, which really override the consensus at WikiProject Countries by fiat. Please gain consensus at its talk page before making mass changes like that again. I'm going to roll back all your recent edits. Graham87 09:28, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
All done, except this edit to Ghana. I've also added notes at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries and Template talk:Infobox country about this issue. Graham87 12:49, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Someone keeps putting a dead rat at the bottom of the Freak Out! article. That's what I kept reverting. Seems you repaired the infobox, which I accidentally kept reverting because it also had the rat picture at the bottom.--Abebenjoe (talk) 07:05, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sources and references

A tag was removed from the article List of most-followed Twitter accounts with the edit summary "This page is enough have single source because it's only list". There is absolutely no criteria anywhere on Wikipedia where a primary source is all that is required on "any" type of article and there are multiple policies and guidelines against "single sourcing". If an article contains the names and material about living people it "must" have secondary references. Otr500 (talk) 10:45, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Little Prince

Hi there. Netlfix is a worldwide company and they released The Little Prince internationally. — Film Fan 12:30, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Film Fan No, the one who released it internationally is Paramount Pictures. --Hddty. (talk) 14:56, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Netflix distributed in US, UK, Australia, etc. That's international, and, crucially, the majority of the English-speaking world. Paramount didn't distribute in a single English-speaking country, and anyway, the poster you uploaded is not from Paramount. — Film Fan 18:20, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Film Fan Well, but anywhere in the world the poster that used in theater to show this film is looked like that. Also the film production company is from France. Netflix only distributed the film in the US, see this. What are you doing is pretty much just example of WP:BIAS and WP:OWN. --Hddty. (talk) 10:08, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
IMDb is a) not a reliable source, and b) wrong. Netflix distributed in the countries I mentioned above. Anyway, regardless of all that, I uploaded a better quality version of the poster you uploaded back at the PNG url (you're supposed to use the original namespace when replacing files), so kindly revert back to that. Filesize is irrelevant. Thanks. — Film Fan 16:55, 11 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Film Fan There is no guidelines that says you should use the original namespace when replacing files, also PNG is for image with transparent on them. File size is relevant, its better to use JPG for poster. --Hddty. (talk) 07:33, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know where the guideline is but ask any admin. The reason for using the original namespace is so that previous revisions of the file can be called upon if required. Filesize is irrelevant. And yes, PNG works for transparent files, but is certainly not only to be used for such files. In future, please conclude a conversation before reverting. — Film Fan 13:11, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What's this about? — Film Fan 14:26, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Because there are no guidelines on the deletion of the original namespace, so JPG is better. Hddty. (talk) 11:51, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Who says JPG is better? (it's very definitely not) — Film Fan 16:00, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Film Fan Hello, if your argument for using PNG file is because original namespace, why did you changed it in the first place? Hddty. (talk) 02:53, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because that wasn't the first place. That was the second place. — Film Fan 11:42, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi bro.. i don't wanna i have deleted edits so when you change the logo on Bukalapak page, i choose to use my Bukalapak image file move to Achmad Zaky page.. but in this page, you edit to your logo again.. i don't wanne edit war.. so can you give the win-win solution? cause i don't wanna have deleted edits.. if you have solution to still use your logo without make me have deleted edits on xtools it's okay.. Thanks bro.. :)

@Michaelelijahtanuwijaya: The preferred format for logo is SVG, since SVG never pixelated or blurred when zoomed. Deleted file is not the problem since what is important here is contributing and improving Wikipedia. Some of my file that I uploaded also got deleted because someone uploaded better file. Hddty. Disambiguation link notification for July 10

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Indonesian presidential election, 2014, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Crescent Star Party (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hey, I noticed you tagged this for CSD G8, which is used for self-redirects and pages that redirect to non-existent pages. What was your reasoning for this? Thanks, Natureium (talk) 23:29, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I noticed you actually tagged 16 or so of these with that. I have undone all those CSD noms but am happy to help if there's a problem I missed. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 23:41, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Natureium and Barkeep49: All those pages are circular link, similar to the already deleted Bridge at the 2018 Asian Games. If the page only contain redirect it's better to keep the link at red so it would encourage page creation (see similar circular link here). All those pages linked from 2018 Asian Games#Calendar. Hddty. (talk) 00:05, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Hddty: I don't know about the Bridge example you show (it's redlined so might have been deleted already) but the 14 or so pages I saw were all valid redirects to 2018 Asian Games. The ones I saw were: Judo at the 2018 Asian Games, 3-on-3 basketball at the 2018 Asian Games, Contract Bridge at the 2018 Asian Games, Sport climbing at the 2018 Asian Games, Roller Sports at the 2018 Asian Games, Wrestling at the 2018 Asian Games, Weightlifting at the 2018 Asian Games, Karate at the 2018 Asian Games, Modern pentathlon at the 2018 Asian Games, Paragliding at the 2018 Asian Games, Wushu at the 2018 Asian Games, Sambo at the 2018 Asian Games ‎and Jujutsu at the 2018 Asian Games, Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 00:14, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Barkeep49: I mean look at the log of Bridge page, it has been deleted in 11 July 2018 because "circular link". Hddty. (talk) 00:18, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Hddty.: Sure enough Bridge at the 2018 Asian Games was a circular link. But that doesn't change the 14 pages above none of which were circular links and all of which had a valid redirect target of what you would think to 2018 Asian Games. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 00:29, 24 July 2018 (UTC) P.S. Sorry for mispelling your name in my last response[reply]

Hello Hddty.. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Beach volleyball at the 2018 Asian Games, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: 2018 Asian Games exists. Go to WP:RFD if you think should be deleted. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 09:45, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I came across a series of these nominations while patrolling CSD, and I have declined them all. You may have valid arguments as to why the links should be red, but the place for those arguments is at RFD. Please do not send these back to CSD. Vanamonde (talk) 17:30, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

circular

The spelling issue is a circular process which never ends - as I say at the Indonesian project talk page - a group of editors get tired of either (a) edit wars at Sukarno and Suharto or other articles (b) want to establish a standard for the project - they act - and leave it.

Along comes another editor a year or two later, probably a new editor, or a fly-by (that is they edit and are never seen again), is bold, and decides (without knowing about the decision at the project page) to revert the established and agreed item, and doesnt discuss, and changes what had been established some time earlier by editors who no longer edit in the area.

This happens in quite a few areas in wikipedia, and in the end, short of edit protect the article indefinitely, it will happen again. I am sure there are some good malay and indonesian paribasa or whatever the word is for sayings or things - that might reflect the 'circularity' of some arguments (that is things that never get resolved but seem to go on forever) - and this is one of them. JarrahTree 09:46, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I do not mean to sound too pessimistic or cynical - but that is what has happened so far and there has been nothing to change the process, as far as I can see JarrahTree 10:00, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And if you read the response at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style - it has been specifically indicated as a content dispute rather than MOS - which misses the value and point of regional variation designations for things. Hohum. JarrahTree 14:38, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:OHCHR logo.svg

Thank you for uploading File:OHCHR logo.svg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

ATTENTION: This is an automated, bot-generated message. This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:03, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. I've gone ahead and added a source to back up your recent addition to July 1. The Days of the Year project had granted themselves an exemption from WP:V. That exemption was corrected in 2017 after it was scrutinized resulting in new additions requiring sources, and folks like me are going through the pages trying to pull sources in from linked articles for existing entries and in some cases helping out folks add new entries with sources, as I did in your case. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:14, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. RMTR

FWIW, you're supposed to copy

{{subst:RMassist| current page title | new page title | reason = reason for move}}

and not use the original, since if you use the original, future following users cannot use it anymore.

I've restored the line to the area where the unused version is supposed to sit as an example to copy, so that users to come can still use RMTR. -- 70.51.201.106 (talk) 03:28, 19 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Long enough"

Regarding your removal of the under construction tag on Lover (Taylor Swift album), what does your summary "Long enough" mean? There is no time limit for an article to be "under construction" for, nor a time the tag has to be removed by (although if the article is left unedited for a week, the tag is removed by a bot). In future, please do not remove tags that you did not place when the article hasn't even existed for 24 hours. Ss112 05:41, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:The Sailor (Rich Brian album), a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:29, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Piping redirects

Per [1], as described at WP:NOPIPE and WP:NOTBROKEN, it is unnecessary, and potentially unwise, to pipe links just to avoid redirects. DrKay (talk) 14:22, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hddty. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "The Sailor".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! Bkissin (talk) 21:41, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Changing redirects

Hi, if you ever change a redirect target again as you did at Boven-Digoel, please also update all the incoming links. (I've done it this time. [2]) – Fayenatic London 09:48, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Fayenatic london: Boven-Digoel was a redirect when I edit it. Hddty (talk) 09:58, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and all 25 incoming links were intended for the original target page; not one of them were intended for the page that you made the target page. Your edit making Boven-Digoel the same as Boven Digoel, relying on the hatnote at the top of Boven Digoel Regency, would have been OK if you had updated the incoming links; however, it was not helpful to change the target without updating those links. The panel on the left of every Wikipedia page includes "What links here", so it is easy to check for such links. – Fayenatic London 10:07, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Kuwait national football team results (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of most-disliked YouTube videos, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Walt Disney Studios. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Page moves (SEA Games)

Hello, Hddty,

Are you sure you really were in the right to move ~100 pages so that they were in agreement with ONE main page? Couldn't it have been the main page that was incorrect? I'll also note that another experienced editor had moved all of those pages to their past page titles. If they are moved back, do not move-war, do what should have happened before all of these page moves, you should start a discussion on what the correct page title should be.

Please do not ever again move dozens and dozens of pages based only on your own opinion, moves this massive and extensive should be a consensus decision. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:39, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz Not only one main page, it's based on Talk:2023_SEA_Games#Requested_move_6_May_2023. From my experience these move that I do is uncontroversial. There is already some user who moved these pages to the abbreviated title. Hddty (talk) 07:43, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hddty, I see you are still moving articles! If all of these 100s of articles were created at these page titles, then there must be a fair number of editors who consider this the correct title. I'm really surprised you haven't encountered resistance. Are you almost done with these page moves? Liz Read! Talk! 04:43, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz It's done until all pages derived as listed at Talk:2023_SEA_Games#Requested_move_6_May_2023 are moved. If someone disagree they can request WP:MR but so far there is none. Hddty (talk) 05:35, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In your revision I don't understand why you removed such statement? I think that it's notable to include at the top of the article, or at least a hatnote for redirect from "7 October 2023" in dmy format. See the hatnote for "December 7, 1941" for Attack on Pearl Harbor and "January 6, 2021" hat note for January 6 United States Capitol attack. Undescribed (talk) 11:52, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
