Request for comment/review

Hi Hawkeye7. Just letting you know I have a trifecta of M2M articles up for review: Shades of Purple is nominated for GA, M2M (band) is nominated for peer review (I intend to nominate it for GA once the peer review is closed), and The Big Room is nominated for DYK. I thought you might be interested in at least having a look at the improvements to the articles, if not commenting/reviewing one. I would be most happy to review one of your active nominations in return if you like. Have a nice day. :) Freikorp (talk) 07:24, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hawkeye7, may I trouble you for a favor? I noticed that you are very experienced with GA nominations both on reviewing and being reviewed sides. Could you possible review my recent review of Jean Tatlock nomination? I'd like to know how my efforts conform to the "standards", and what were strong and weak points. If you feel you'll be more candid in private communication, please shoot me a short email. Thanks, 凰兰时罗 (talk) 18:47, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
I think you did a good job. I had no argument with your suggestions, but in some cases I was unsure about what you wanted. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:18, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Did it become clear eventually, or you are still having black spots on some of my suggestions? 凰兰时罗 (talk) 23:09, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
First of all I would like to say that the article is better for our interaction, which is all-important. Secondly, resolving problems like giving the wrong impression, or implementing NPOV invariably require another pair of eyes, which is why I put the article up for review. Such problems are hard to spot because I know what I meant when I wrote it. On the other hand, I sometimes employ the full force of the English language to address issues without noting them explicitly or to skate over controversial points by being ambiguous. Your suggestion to add the suicide note was most welcome, but I suspect is what you were referring to by "already moved beyond GA criteria". Jean Tatlock is as good as I could get it but I don't think it will ever proceed any further. I often submit articles which have been written as featured articles (although they may be unlikely to get there due to the restrictions at FAC) and reviewers often get carried away and start reviewing as it it were a FAC. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:43, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for a more detailed explanation. I completely agree with your approach, i.e. with the benefits of a second opinion. Here is what I meant by "already moved beyond GA criteria". I believe that a reviewer should not try to impose her/his style beyond GA criteria. So, when I see an issue, I'm often tempted to fix it in a particular way that is congruent with my style. However, I remind myself that my approach is no panacea, and the article's editor(s) can do the fixing in a way they are most comfortable with. In essence, by writing this phrase I was stopping myself from being too prescriptive. BTW I would apply this same logic to FA criteria. I think that there are infinitely many ways to write a featured article which will (a) satisfy all the criteria (b) will be enjoyed by the readers (c) will make the editor(s) and wiki-community proud. So, from my standpoint, a good GA/FA reviewer knows how to separate what objectively needs to be done from what he/she would do to achieve that. 凰兰时罗 (talk) 05:24, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Bug report

Thx for the bot, it's very helpful. See WT:TFA#Recently featured again (not the part about Jan 4, the rest of it). I initially thought this wouldn't be an issue because it would be infrequent and I could fix it by hand ... and I can, but it's happening more often than I remembered that part of a title is italicized and part isn't, and I keep forgetting to do it. If this is going to be a pain, don't worry about it. - Dank (push to talk) 13:18, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Mary Jackson

Hi! I saw your edit to Mary Jackson (engineer), and was just curious what your change accomplished. The edit summary says "rm annoying error messages," but I wasn't seeing errors on the previous version. I looked at the documentation of citation and still have no idea what ref=none does. GorillaWarfare (talk) 07:10, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

The error messages I got looked like warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFCzarneckiJackson1958. By default the citation template creates an anchor equivalent to that created by ref=harv when you are using cite journal or cite book. But with them ref=none (ie do not create an anchor) is the default. The anchors are normally used with references; the harvnb and sfn templates create nice links to them. So that when you click on the link in an inline reference, it takes you down to the book in the references section and highlights the book. You don't need them in a list of publications, because there are no inline references to them. (Note that I didn't add one to the journal citation, because it didn't need it.) The ref=none form is in the documentation of citation: see Template:Citation#Anchored citations.
As to why I can see the error message and you can't, the reason is that I seem to have a Javascript that runs a JQuery to spot these errors called User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js It's been in User:Hawkeye7/common.js since 13 November 2011; I guess I had forgotten all about it. It normally warns me that a reference is wrong. I should have marked the change as "minor", since it is invisible to the readers. My apologies for that.
Great job on the article! Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:28, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Herb Chen

Hey H., Noting your interest in physics biographies, I wonder if you might have a quick look at some point at the article I have been working on the past month: Herbert H. Chen. There are still some missing pieces (I have an inquiry in on Chen's dissertation title), but mostly I am sometimes foggy on some of the technicalities of Wikipedia articles. The Chen article is a little challenging - I knew him and by all accounts he was a brilliant and accomplished physicist; but he was struck down by leukemia at age 45 - hence did not become as notable as he might have. Cheers and thanks for all of your hard work on articles! Bdushaw (talk) 12:11, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Feynman

My only remaining question is about that photo with the Swedish PD tag, but it's not a show stopper so I'll ask it here. Given the response by the other person who said it can go to Commons, do you now agree or disagree with him? ie, should it go to Commons or not? HalfGig talk 20:42, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

The image is definitely in the PD. Copyright expired in Sweden, therefore also in the US. But I went through this with James Chadwick. In that case, another (but slightly different) photograph of Chadwick was taken at the same session, but it was published in the UK, and therefore was not in the PD. We had a debate on Commons and the image was kept. Then one of their cowboy admins just deleted it anyway. So the rule is: don't move images to Commons if don't have to. If we do have to, we can substitute the OTRS image (the one in the Physics section) that everyone else uses, but I'd rather not.
It's two other images that are problematic; the one of the CalTech bookstore and the Feynman Lectures on Physics. They are on Commons, so all we can do is remove them from the article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:56, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
I'm no super image license expert, but I'd lean to keeping those two in the article. HalfGig talk 21:13, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi, the additional citation that I added in the article Niels Bohr about the invitation by Lord Cherwell was reversed by you. The reason given was that it's already covered by existing link. Can you please let me know that existing link, because I could not find it? Thanks for your information.--老陳 (talk) 22:17, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

The sentence was sourced to Thirsk (2006), p. 374. You are claiming that you checked that book and it did not cover the sentence? I don't have a copy on hand, so I'll have to take your word for it. I did check Powers, and the claim is supported on p. 237. Looking back through the change history, I have restored the original source, which is Jones (1985). p. 280. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:45, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply! Those 2 books do not have Google previews and Amazon look-insides. The source that I added has Google preview. It would do reader a service if that source can be included also.--老陳 (talk) 06:42, 22 February 2017 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

 • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
 • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
 • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Closure of Lead FAC!

G'day Hawkeye7, I think my ping to you, here, may not have registered. Thank you. Sandbh (talk) 01:55, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Now that's Lead FAC is over, problems raised remain?

Hi, Hawkeye. I would want to clarify a few points regarding your comments on the FAC page so we can make sure we'll get it there the second time.

First, you have listed a number of paragraphs we needed to "find citations for." Most of those paragraphs had some---that noted---citations at that point. I assumed there could be particular claims that were sort of asking for a source to refer to, and I checked around a half of them (maybe more) and couldn't find it. I assumed then I wouldn't act unless you explain me what must be done. I suggested it then---and I am suggesting it now---that you list the claims needing citations or add cn tags. May I ask you to do so?

Then, to quote the subsequent WT:FAC talk, "I also wanted to see locations for the books, publishers for the web sites and - although I'm willing to yield on this point - ISSNs for the journals." I genuinely don't understand a few points here. First, locations? They could be helpful when there are multiple publishers sharing the same name and there's some bibliographical tradition to include them. On the opposite side, we have the amount of work needed to put those in and my personal feeling that this is superfluous information. This, surely enough, would matter nothing if I had to put them in---there was a requirement or something---but to my knowledge, there isn't. And unless there is (please tell me if this is the case), this is a "what I like and what I don't" thing that you surely could agree are not things to influence the process of a FAC. (You did not reply to my original response, and I assumed this review this one of those partial reviews that were not aimed at supporting but only raising some prerequisite points. I was unpleasantly surprised that you in fact were watching the progress but stayed away from replying and then this "unresolved" issue came up at the WT:FAC talk as if it was something we had to do but didn't.) So please clarify why this is a requirement to comply with (aside from "a reviewer wanted it," as I see nothing more at the moment).

Then, publishers for the web sites. I see you're probably referring to this comment: "FN 64, 164 publisher?" If that is the case, then I satisfied your call for no. 164. This leaves one. I specified that according to Template:Cite web, I should not have provided a publisher for no. 64 (though I have reviewed my stance on this one since, so we must be good on this now. Are we?).

And then, the ISSNs. Again, why is this a requirement aside from personal preferences? As for me, I am reluctant to spend time on this one unless I have to---I don't see the point: hardly anyone wouldn't be satisfied with a DOI and, in general, I don't want that to be TMI. One such code helps uniquely define an article.--R8R (talk) 10:00, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

 • It doesn't matter at all that the paragraphs have some references. Nobody cares about that. Everything has to be cited. Every last thing. This is a sine qua non. And the refusal to do so is an immediate failure at FAC or GAC. We didn't proceed with the next step of verifying the claims cited against the sources.
You're sort of missing the point. I have nothing to reply to this with but with what I've already written. Let me repeat myself, "I assumed there could be particular claims that were sort of asking for a source to refer to, and I checked around a half of them (maybe more) and couldn't find it. I assumed then I wouldn't act unless you explain me what must be done. I suggested it then---and I am suggesting it now---that you list the claims needing citations or add cn tags." Just saying generic "everything" does not help in a particular case.
Added. But I provided a like of paragraphs with unreferenced claims. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Here's a quote from WP:FAC: "Each objection must provide a specific rationale that can be addressed [bold in the source]". That is what I am asking for. What claims do we need references for?--R8R (talk) 13:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Okay, thank you. That was what I was looking for.--R8R (talk) 13:13, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
 • The claim that according to Template:Cite web you don't have to provide a publisher for web sites is utterly wrong. It isn't what it says at all! All web site citations require a publisher. As with the above, it either gets fixed, or the article will not pass FAC.
I was referring to this particular quote: "Do not use the publisher parameter for the name of a work (e.g. a book, encyclopedia, newspaper, magazine, journal, website)." Nevertheless, I did specify what you wanted here was done. Why are you still threatening with not passing FAC?--R8R (talk) 13:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm only reviewing. It's up to the delegate to pass it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
 • It is traditional to provide locations for books. It is the normal citation style. The reason is that when the book is looked up manually, the location is required. Nowadays, the ISBN can be used to look up a book, so it is redundant. It is still the style to provide it anyway.
I don't see how "the style" is anything more than a personal liking. There is no particular style we have to follow here in Wikipedia as far as I know.--R8R (talk) 13:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough, but to look up a book you need either location-publisher-year or isbn. But not all books have isbns. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
 • DOIs aren't much use really, but the ISSN is just a preference, like alt text, so I was willing to waive it. It is required by other language Wikipedias and is used when we translate the article.
Okay, noted. Won't act now but will have in mind in future.--R8R (talk) 13:12, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Hawkeye7 (talk) 12:50, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

It is good we've framed the amount of work to be done clearly. Thank you.--R8R (talk) 21:22, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

 • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
 • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
 • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
 • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Fair Use in Australia campaign update

I'm writing you this followup message, as you took the time to vote in support of a Wikipedia banner campaign for the introduction of Fair Use in Australia.
After much planning and coordination with the WMF, Australian Digital Alliance, and Electronic Frontiers Australia, as of Monday the banner-campaign is active on English Wikipedia to a portion of logged-out readers in Australia (technical details). The banners direct people to this page on Meta: FairCopyrightOz. That page, alongside lots of information, further directs people towards the campaign website faircopyright.org.au where Australians are invited to write to their local MP to express support of Fair Use. If you are interested in supporting this campaign, please, send a letter yourself using the template letter provided at that link.
Furthermore, and with the support of the ADA & EFA, we have received fantastic media coverage - with article "Fair Use: Wikipedia targets Australians in bid to change the law" appearing on page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald and page 10 of the Melbourne Age on Monday's edition. It was for a time the 3rd most read article the Fairfax website, and Fair Use was "trending" on Twitter in Australia. We are running the account @FairCopyrightOz on twitter, and we are tracking other press-mentions on the talkpage on Meta.
Today, day 2, we published a detailed post about the campaign on the Wikimedia Blog, ran an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A session on the Australia page in Reddit, and [by happy coincidence of timing] the article History of fair use proposals in Australia appeared on the en.wp mainpage as a Did You Know. [The creation of that "history of..." article was a specific request arising from in the community consultation in which you voted].
And, most importantly, in a little more than a day nearly 800 letters to MPs have been sent encouraging them to support the Productivity Commission's recommendation to adopt Fair Use in Australia. I urge you - please add your own message.

Sincerely, Wittylama 16:19, 23 May 2017 (UTC)

S-1 Executive Committee and the Manhattan project

There was no confusion with the Manhattan District. Mark Oliphant flew to the USA in August 1941. The US project was called The S-1 Executive Committee. This mission caused the S-1 Committee to take seriously the concept of a practical atomic bomb in December 1941. James Marshall chose 240 Broadway in Manhattan in June 1942 to be close to one of the main contractors. The names 'Manhattan District' or 'Manhattan Project' did not exist until then. Ref Pulitzer Prize Winning The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. It is impossible that a project that did not yet exist could be expanded. This logic is irrefutable. Please restore my edit. JMcC (talk) 09:32, 9 March 2017 (UTC).

That's right. The Manhattan Project was codenamed S-1. The Army formed the Manhattan District in August 1942, named, as you note, after where it was located (as did all the engineer districts). The project continued to be codenamed S-1, but gradually the name "Manhattan Project" came to be applied to it, but even in 1945 you can still see documents referring to "S-1". The Manhattan Project came to an end on 31 December 1946, and its functions were assumed by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project. The Manhattan District continued until 15 August 1947, when it was inactivated. The director of the Manhattan Project was Leslie Groves; the commander of the Manhattan District was Kenneth Nichols. The article is very carefully written to not confuse the Manhattan Project with the Manhattan District. Hawkeye7 (talk) 10:51, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

FAC William Pūnohu White

Hello, I don't know if you came across Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/William Pūnohu White/archive1. It was closed today because of no traffic and only 1 review after a month. The quality of the article is FAC material in my opinion. I did not ask anybody (except two users) in the initial run to review it since I was trusting that it will receive reviews. Now I am asking a couple of people here and there to see if there is enough interest to renominate it again as recommended by the closing admin. I will only go ahead and renominate it once I find a few people who wants to give it a review. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks either way.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 01:37, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Out of mild curiosity, is there any reason why the bot did not today run on the recently promoted/archived FAC pages? I only ask because I usually get pinged when it runs, and I just realised that I wasn't pinged! Sarastro1 (talk) 00:14, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

I get pinged when the Bot has a problem. The 11 March 2017 run did not complete. It may have encountered one of those database down events. I ran a debugging run today. This is a run where I set a flag and it chatters to me as it performs its work. No problem was encountered, and it promoted several articles. Hawkeye7 (talk) 02:21, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

I've done one pass through it. I'll do another tomorrow. In answer to your question: NASA is a publisher, not a website. The main problem, though, is inconsistency, with "publisher", "website", "work" and a couple of other being used for the same thing. Hawkeye7 (talk) 09:41, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Manhattan

G'day mate. I'm watching Manhattan (TV series) and thought of you. don't know if you've seen it? All the best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:48, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

Yes, I watched it. Almost of the characters are fictional (with odd takes on Niels Bohr, Robert Oppenheimer, Jean Tatlock and Kitty Oppenheimer), but the sets and costumes are very authentic, and the issues are quite real. In their misfit status the team in the series does resemble Seth Neddermeyer's implosion group, but it even more closely resembles Edward Teller's Super group. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:42, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
I'm quite enjoying it. It's entertaining but doesn't need so much attention that I can't dip in and out. I've been cross-referencing details with your articles! They do a good job of showing the strains of living under that sort of secrecy and the toll it took on family life. They also seem to be having a lot of sex (well, what else is there to do in the desert in the middle of a war!) and I'm not sure if that's a vital plot point or just a Game of Thrones-style cutaway to keep the viewer interested! WIR-YOS

[65]? Diff please to previous warning, as I've no idea what you're talking about. According to this, we've never even intersected on an article talk page and the only diff of yours on my talk page is unrelated. The article is listed at WP:WIRYOS, in the list of improved/created articles. I added the template created to add to those articles. In this case it appears to have been added because an image was restored and added to the article as part of the event. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:03, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

The article was created in June 2003, and I improved it to GA status in June 2015. I complained to Rosiestep about the attribution of articles that I have worked on in Esino Lario in 2016. Hawkeye7 (talk) 22:10, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Perhaps you mistook my username for Rosie's (re: warning), or assume that we talked about your [presumably offline] conversation in Esino Lario? Regardless, the template says "This article was created or improved as part of...", similar to all the other WiR tags, education program assignments, edit-a-thons like Art+Feminism, etc. The bar is low to add such banners, and I don't think anybody reads them as necessarily meaning "the lion's share of work done to this article was done via this event" (and, of course, the vast majority of non-Wikipedians never see it).
If you would like there to be a higher bar to add it, or perhaps template parameters which allow whoever adds it to specify the sort of work done (e.g. "One or more images were added to this article as part of..."), that's a very sensible discussion to have, and I'd probably support some version of it. "Credit" on Wikipedia is obviously fraught and all kinds of sensitive (as an aside, I keep meaning to write an essay born of frustration with people creating articles when a draft with the same name of similar quality already exists), but I don't think it makes sense to use it on the talk page of every article edited as part of an event ... unless a major contributor to the page thinks it takes away from their own contribution. Granted, it's probably a gray area, since I don't know that there's ever been any linkable form of consensus that these should be added everywhere. Thoughts? (to be clear, I'm not so much arguing this particular article -- and don't intend to restore it there -- as much as general principle). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
Each project is free to tag whatever articles it chooses as part of its project, so go ahead if you want to. And yes, it has been taken as meaning "the lion's share of work done to this article was done via this event" in the mainstream media. Hawkeye7 (talk) 23:15, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Battle of Madang

G'day Hawkeye7, as we look to wrap up the Huon Peninsula articles, is there anything that you would like to add about that campaign to the Battle of Madang? AustralianRupert (talk) 05:45, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

I don't have my books at the moment, so I can't do anything myself until I return in May. The Madang article is a little incoherernt in parts "which had been secured by US and Australian forces in January – February 1944 by troops assigned to the Huon Peninsula campaign". Furthermore:
 • The main problem here is that the key point - that Madang was secured by forces moving along the coast in boats of the 532nd EBSR is obscured
 • The Japanese were not withdrawing from Saidor, but from the Finschhafen area past Saidor
 • Where were the Japanese withdrawing to? From memory, it was the Sepik
 • The article should state when Madang was occupied, as this was far from obvious too

Regards Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:54, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

 • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
 • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
 • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
 • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Archived FAC

Hi -- just doing some stats analysis on April FACs, and I found this, which doesn't seem to have been processed. Looks like the FAC is not linked on the article talk page -- is that why? Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:13, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

The problem is that it was removed from the FAC category with this edit. I restored it to the category, and the Bot has processed it. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:47, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
This is also unprocessed, though the FAC is linked on the talk page. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:16, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
I will investigate. I can't tell what is going on without checking the logs, and I can't do that until I return home. (I may get the Bot to put them in the drop box in future so I can read them remotely.) The Bot sends me error reports with logs when it has a problem, but it has not detected one. I will have to get back to you in a few days. Hawkeye7 (talk) 03:50, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Now that I can see the log, the Bot says: "WARNING: FAC closed but Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Philippine Competition Commission/archive1 has NOT been moved to the archive page". This is true; I have made this change, and it was processed. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:38, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
OK; if I see more untranscludede archives I'll look for those issues before checking with you. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 09:53, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Op-Ed?

I was looking through the World War I timeline page for inspiration for this month's Bugle op-ed piece and found the Battle of Messines (1917) and the introduction of the Gotha G.IV to be interesting enough for an op-ed; however, the more I read about the Battle of Messines the more I encountered Australian units. I recall that earlier you had written a particularly fine piece concerning the Australians on the Somme, so I thought I would drop you a line and see if you wanted to take this month's op-ed and discuss the Australians at the Battle of Messines. If not, then I will take up the Gotha G. IV and run with it for our June op-ed. TomStar81 (Talk) 11:05, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Strategy

As you were at the Melbourne meetup - and have probably fed back into the system in more than one way or other regarding the strategy - is there anything you would like to add in any way to the Australian conversation in reletion to the Cycle 2 stage - either on wiki or off? I do think your contribution is important due to your profile amongst the milhist community, and the foot in either community would be an interesting perspective - I am trying up my report in the next day or so - so I am not asking for an essay - any words in relation to what Katherine was talking about - or anything that you think is important relative to strategy, I would be interested to hear about - thanks JarrahTree 01:38, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hawkeye, how's it going? Isidor Isaac Rabi has been scheduled for the above date as Today's Featured Article. I'd appreciate it if you could check the article one more time to make sure it's up-to-date. You can edit the text that will appear on the Main Page if you like; I'll be trimming it to around 1100 characters. Thanks! - Dank (push to talk) 00:45, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

I've trimmed it down to the usual character count. Hawkeye7 (talk) 05:30, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

On 20 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article British hydrogen bomb programme, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! This may seem like a bizarrely late comment, but I was just looking at the J. G'day, again, I've expanded a couple more that could do with the Hawkeye touch if you are keen: Battle of the Green Islands and Battle of the Treasury Islands. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 09:51, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
I have added a couple of paragraphs on base development to each article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 04:57, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
G'day, Hawkeye, as part of my own island hopping campaign, I've finished working on the Landings at Cape Torokina article for the timebeing. If you get a chance, would you mind taking a look and adding the base development information as per before? I will move on to the battles of the perimeter shortly, with a view to finally rounding out the Bougainville campaign articles but it will probably take me until the end of the year at the my present rate of effort. I broke FACBot's featured content announcements

I changed Template:Announcements/New featured content to a tableless layout. Since I didn't touch the * lists, I didn't think I'd mess up FACBot. So this diff is my fault, sorry. I've added newlines after each list, like it was before — diff. I hope that fixes it. If not, I'll revert my changes. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 05:03, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

I thought it would be okay too. But I'm kind of lazy, which is why I use Bots. Your proposed fix should be okay. The Bot looks for the "Articles (15, most recent first)" line. It obtains the number to keep from that line. It adds the new entry, and then counts the lines from there. So ones beyond 15 are omitted. (This allows you to change the number of entries.) It assumes it has reached the end of the section when it reaches a blank line or the "Topics (15, most recent first)" line. I have just now told it to respond to your </div> card as well. So you shouldn't need the blank lines. Hawkeye7 (talk) 05:25, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
Looking good now — diff. Thanks! Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 00:28, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Hawkeye, this FA article is currently proposed to be included in On This Day on main page tomorrow, 2 Sept. In the last section, Aftermath, it has "Edwards and his deputy Jim Cairns led large anti-war protests." It looks to me like edits done 19 June 2011 made it read as if referring to the previously mentioned "Peter Edwards, a military historian at the Australian War Memorial". Can you please have a look at/reword it? JennyOz (talk) 06:16, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

It was referring to him. Originally it said "In 1970, Labor leader Gough Whitlam posed with the Vietcong flag, and his deputy Jim Cairns led large anti-war protests." The first clause is untrue, misrepresenting the source, and then poor edits trying to correct this mistake mixed up the footnote with the text. I remember Jim Cairns. When I was at Monash Uni in the 1990s he used to show up on Fridays and sell books. But he was not Peter Edwards' deputy. I can only imagine the look on Peter Edward's face if he read this! Anyway, I have corrected it, and made some minor changes. Hawkeye7 (talk) 07:15, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much for so promptly fixing the nonsensical bit and for the extra changes. JennyOz (talk) 09:40, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Bugle article

In the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, General Sir Hubert Gough attempts to break through the German defensive positions, and then push forward. The planned advance is still a limited one, the final objective about 5,000 yards (4,600 m) distant.

No, no a thousand times no! The green line was the objective, 3,500 yds distant at most. An extra (red) line was added to mark the limit of possible exploitations by fresh troops, where German resistance had collapsed or ground was undefended. The red line was not the objective. Troops who advanced beyond the range of their divisional artillery according to this scheme, were to be protected by medium and heavy artillery instead. It was a break-in not a breakthrough attempt. See the Pilckem article for the details. ;O)Keith-264 (talk) 10:44, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hmm, I can't comment on the distance question but I will have to take responsibility for changing Hawkeye's original "break into" to "break through", simply because the original sounded like a burglary attempt to my ignorant ears...! I've since reverted the wording to "break into". Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 10:51, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
That term seems to have as many definitions as people who use it, which causes endless confusion. There's no doubt that the plan was for several bite and hold attacks but the truth of the matter is buried by decades of derivative garbage following Lloyd George et al. See History of the Great War 1917 Part II, not that I'm bitter mind. ;O)Keith-264 (talk) 12:49, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
You're absolutely right. Corrected the article. The use of the medium artillery (the 60-pounders and 6-inch howitzers) was a Gough touch. During the advance to the Hindenburg Line it had been found that they could displace as fast as the field artillery. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:51, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Oh that's a good point, I'll work it into the article. Regards and thanks. ;O)Keith-264 (talk) 21:07, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Non-diffusing subcats

Re: Category:American women mathematicians please read the language of WP:GHETTO and non-diffusing, particularly [emphasis added] "It includes mathematicians that can also be found in the parent category, or in diffusing subcategories of the parent." Someone in Category:American women mathematicians must also be in either Category:American mathematicians (the parent) or another subcategory of Category:American mathematicians (i.e. in the case of Nancy Farley Wood, Category:20th-century American mathematicians and Category:Mathematicians from Illinois and Category:Mathematicians from Missouri.) Since Category:American mathematicians is otherwise diffused by century and state (in addition to sub-field of study, such as Category:American geodesists), it is not necessary for the parent category to house any articles and can instead be fully diffused using at least two schemes. Please ping me if you respond here. Thanks. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 20:53, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

@Koavf: We've been through this before. Category:American mathematicians is a marked as a non-diffusing category of Category:American mathematicians. All the articles in it must also be in the parent category. Any attempt to move them into an ghetto will be regarded as misogyny, and I will have to report you to ANI. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:00, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Did you read anything I wrote above? First off, Category:American mathematicians is not marked as non-diffusing of itself. Secondly, if you look at Category:American women mathematicians and also look at WP:GHETTO, you will see that biographies can be in a different scheme to diffuse the parent. Which this one is. Do you understand the language of the template itself? Why is it you think that Category:American mathematicians cannot be fully diffused by century, state, or some other scheme aside from gender? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:13, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
Alternately, let me put it this way: If you were to post to WP:ANI, what would you write? If you tell me your thought process, I may be able to address your concerns. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:28, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
This seems to defeat the whole point of marking the category as non-diffusing. We came under severe criticism for this sort of categorisation, which was portrayed in the mainstream media as proof that Wikipedia is misogynist, threatening my ability to contribute. Categorisation by state seems arbitrary and reduces the value of the categorisation. Confronts anyone looking at the category with precisely the view we wanted to avoid. Most states have only one person in them. Physicists are not categorised this way. Looking at Richard Hamming, I note that he is not categorised this way. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:46, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
They only have one because I am making it now. They will be more full soon. I think the criticism was that women were somehow segregated away and men were seen as normative in the parent category. (I don't agree with the assessment but still, that was the problem.) Subcategorizing by field/genre, century, or state provides a way to keep the parent category empty in the first place, which is precisely what will resolve the complaint. Some categories (e.g. Category:American mimes) are too small to need any diffusion but if there is a diffusion by men/women, there can be one by some other scheme as well. Again, I'm sorry if you misunderstood but please look at the actual text of the tag: subdividing by another scheme is entirely consistent with a category being non-diffusing and is exactly what WP:GHETTO calls for. Finally, as an aside, a category like "Category:Mathematicians from Ohio" also serves to diffuse up a larger hierarchy like Category:Scientists from OhioCategory:Academics from OhioCategory:People from Ohio. We don't need it so granular as Category:Geometers from Ohio but having it as broad as Category:People from Ohio would make for unnavigable categories. So a triple intersection of nationality, occupation, and location is very useful for subdividing all three of those parent schemes. Does that make sense? Are we on the same page? If there's something I'm missing, please let me know. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 22:22, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
We're on the same page. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 23:02, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes

Hi Hawkeye, thank you for reviewing all of these articles! I don't think I have ever had so many GA reviews on the go at once before. I was wondering if you wanted to sort out this 'first sentence' issue here rather than me try and discuss it in multiple places at once. Like I said before, that opening line is included as a quick introduction separately from the article overview per WP:TVLEAD, as is also done on the main series and season articles for the show. It is pretty basic information that can be confirmed by checking Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and/or watching the episode, and it has never been challenged before, so it never seemed worth trying to work into the body of every single episode article. - adamstom97 (talk) 21:08, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

Since they were all pretty similar, I thought it best to review them all at once. The lead is fine. All we are down to is a reference for the series and episode number. I realise that this is pretty basic information. But the whole Plot section is based on the assumption that the reader hasn't watched the episode. Furthermore, I'm not sure where the episode number is in the credits. But as long as we can find this fact somewhere it is okay. I have looked through the Production sections, and I concluded that enough information is there. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:43, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
The episode number should be sourced in the development section where the title is first noted, and many references in the articles will note the series so adjustments could be made there if you felt that was necessary. - adamstom97 (talk) 21:59, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
I have passed all six. I had some trouble with the GA page. Suggest that in future that all episodes be disambiguated with "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" whether they need it or not. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:03, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks again! I think there would be some blow-back from other editors if I started over-disambiguating articles. All of the articles for the series are collected in Template:Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes anyway, and at List of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episodes. - adamstom97 (talk) 22:08, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

WP:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Statement_by_Dank

Hi Hawkeye, it's been too long since we've chatted. I've decided I want to say something there, but first, I'm in search of clue. One way to get clue is to talk with people who disagree with me (particularly if they're making a statement at WP:RFAR, because people often truncate their statements drastically, and actually know a lot more than they're saying). You arrived at the opposite conclusion to mine. I don't think it's fair to say that Arbcom shouldn't take the case because they're not the best venue and they can't solve the whole problem, because there are parts of the problem that they and only they can solve. Arbcom is much more likely not to fix something that they could actually fix than the other way around; there is little chance that they will go all bull-in-a-china-shop. They may go the other direction, and do something minimal and limited to just the two principal parties. But even a minimal ruling can be one important step along the way, as people grapple with this very extensive and tough problem.

So, I'm leaving this note for both you and GoldenRing, for two reasons: 1. you guys are the only two who disagree with me (although we do have a few noncommital statements from others), so you're the ones in the best position to explain to me why I'm wrong, and 2. Arbcom is hesitating, and I can understand that ... they're not masochists. But I think it would be good to apply peer pressure to get them to step up and do the right thing, the necessary thing, and a unanimous case request would be a suitable form of peer pressure. IMO, Arbcom is a kind of single point of failure for Wikipedia ... if they turn away from disputes that can legitimately be framed as policy violations and that can't be solved elsewhere, then the whole dispute-resolution system fails. - Dank (push to talk) 19:04, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

Yes, the MilHistBot is set up for this; but my next award will only be my 34th, so it should still be the A-Class medal with Diamonds. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 09:08, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

The bot does not seem to have run on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Carol (film)/archive1. I'm not sure why, thought some indecision over who the nominator was might have something to do with it. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:01, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? New Page Reviewing

Hello, Hawkeye7.

I noticed you've done some constructive editing recently.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 09:12, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Hawkeye7. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

 • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
 • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
 • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
 • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
 • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. TonyBallioni (talk) 19:59, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

As a personal note, I was very happy to see this request come through. Thank you for volunteering, even if it is only to help out in doses. Your content work is really remarkable :) TonyBallioni (talk) 20:01, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
As additional note, per your comments on the request page; while there are hundreds of users with the New page reviewer user right, almost all of the reviews are done by a very small number of reviewers, and the majority of users with the flag are not active. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 22:18, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

FL count

Hi, Hawkeye. I saw your edit here where you moved the total featured list count up by 3 and can't tell where you got the number from. The list you added had been present in another place (and under a different name), but I don't know how the figure would change otherwise. Where did you come up with the total? I looked through the most recent FL additions to see if one of us had forgotten to change the count, but it looks like we updated it properly, unless I'm missing something. Giants2008 (Talk) 16:30, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

I counted them. My problem is that Petscan indicates that there are only 3,224 featured lists. I removed several from the category yesterday that had been marked as featured lists but were not. (The creator had used another article as a template and copied the featured list template.) So the numbers don't add up. There could be duplicates, or (more likely) some lists that have been de-listed but are still there. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:35, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
That's odd. I'll alert the FL community on FLC talk and hopefully somebody there will be able to resolve the problem. Thanks for your diligence. Giants2008 (Talk) 16:33, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

MacArthur’s Knighthood

Thanks for the link to the earlier discussion, however I think as it’s now written the article is inaccurate, as it suggests that the Order of the Bath is an Australian honor, which it simply isn’t. Perhaps it would make more sense to just include the fact that it was given on the advice of the Australian Government over the British Government’s objection? JCO312 (talk) 03:18, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

It was an Australian honour. The official position is:

The Imperial system of honours and awards was applied across many countries in the Commonwealth of Nations but the system was administered independently in each country. Awards within the system were bestowed by the governments of each of those countries. Australians who received Imperial campaign medals for service in the Australian armed forces received these awards from a grateful Australian Government and people.[223]

Hawkeye7 (discuss) 03:37, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

I actually still don’t think that answers the question. Campaign medals are different from orders of chivalry. Thus, while a Victoria Cross would be appropriately interpreted as an Australian honor if awarded under the circumstances you’re describing, the Order of the Bath is simply a British order. Put it another way, there is no such thing as the “Australian Order of the Bath.” JCO312 (talk) 02:01, 28 November 2017 (UTC) JCO312 (talk) 02:01, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

The text of the article is crystal clear: the Australian government had him appointed an honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. @Anthony Staunton: Hawkeye7 (discuss) 02:10, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
Australia was a full participant in the Imperial honours system so the recommendation and issue of campaign medals are no different from orders of chivalry. If the 'Victoria Cross would be appropriately interpreted as an Australian honor' then there should be no dispute about a lessor award. 83 Australian general officers receive the KCB or the CB, Macarthur received an honorary GCB and three other American officers received honorary CBs in the Second World War. They were all Australian honours. Anthony Staunton (talk) 09:32, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Query re: pending ACCs

G'day Hawkeye, just wondered if I should create a new section on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Awards for ACCs, or whether you see them going under the existing Nominations for the A-Class Medal section with new wording? Suggestion

Hi, I suspect that you need new ideas for articles about as much as you need a hole in the head, but there's scope for a really interesting article on the logistics for the 1999 INTERFET deployment. As you may have seen, over recent years a number of historians and military officers have published fairly detailed works arguing that INTERFET was actually a near run thing due to the state of the ADF's logistics capabilities (though they're over-egging things a bit IMO given that the operation was highly successful) and it does seem to have lead to some important improvements. Nick-D (talk) 23:27, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

There was a hopelessly misguided effort to increase the Army's teeth-to-tail ratio. I do have the material to write this, but I'm away at the moment, and do not have access to my books. I will do it in the New Year. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:33, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Hawkeye7, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

 • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
 • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

 • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: . Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

 • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
 • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

 • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
 • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
 • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

Your reversions

Hi Hawkeye,

I am attempting to categorize the notable members of the Century Association. There have been about 11,000 total. 1,700 already have been identified and categorized. This is a large endeavor that will help people to identify members and their professions, affiliations, etc. through cross-category searching, and will also help me to develop the Century's articles. If you doubt any person was a member, perhaps search their name here: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/006068741, at the yearbook for any date they were a member (especially, usually, the year of their death). As an example: Vannevar Bush (appears in every book from 1939 to 1962). That should give you some verification. Some of these yearbooks are not fully public online, and yet that text search should pretty much confirm. However, the publicly-accessible Century Association Archives Foundation has these books as well; you could verify there in-person as well (WP:OFFLINE). I could go there myself and take photos of book pages as well, if you wish. Is that okay for you? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 03:32, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Citations for Bush, Compton, Conant, and Pegram ca be found on pages 369, 372, 372, and 397, respectively.[1] How would you prefer to implement? ɱ (talk) · vbm · coi) 03:53, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

S-50 (Manhattan Project) scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the S-50 (Manhattan Project) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 22, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 22, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. DYK for Gen 75 Committee

On 18 December 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Gen 75 Committee, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Ernest Bevin told the Gen 75 Committee that Britain should acquire atomic bombs "whatever it costs... We've got to have the bloody Union Jack flying on top of it"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Gen 75 Committee. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Gen 75 Committee), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Bot query

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Golden jackal/archive1 wasn't closed by the bot, but not sure why. Sarastro (talk) 18:47, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

The Bot is looking for a FACClosed card on the review page, and cannot find one. I can't find one either. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 20:40, 20 December 2017 (UTC)
Ah, my mistake! For some reason, I never saved the page when I added the closed template. I'll either blame my computer or seasonal exhaustion. Whichever is less embarrassing. Sarastro (talk) 20:45, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Landings at Cape Torokina

G'day Hawkeye, I hope you are well. I am thinking about putting the Landings at Cape Torokina article up for GAN and was wondering if you would like to be a co-nominator. Depending on how the nom goes, I would also look to potentially put it up for A-class review in early 2018, as well. Please let me know what you think. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 22:57, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Sure. No problem with that. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 02:55, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Template:WPMILHIST Announcements

G'day Hawkeye, just checking if Milhistbot is maintaining this template at present. I've manually removed some passed and failed GANs, but it doesn't seem to be adding new GANs either since about 9 December. I'm happy to add them manually while you're away if necessary. Let me know? Looks like the announcements run needs to be run manually as well. I will ensure that it runs daily from now on. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 04:27, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Buzz Aldrin citations

Hey Hawkeye. I am close to getting Buzz Aldrin to a B-class article (nowhere near a GA though IMO), but I am having issues finding the awards he won during his military career. Do you have a good source for this? Kees08 (Talk) 06:36, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

His citations here. Then there's his own list. But it falls short... I have an awful feeling that the medal bar is based on File:Buzz Aldrin black and white dress uniform photo portrait.jpg. (There is a full list of these here). Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:01, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
Your work on the astronauts has been very impressive. It would be nice to have at least the 1959, 1962 and 1963 ones all up to GA. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 21:04, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I had noticed those two sites but I was not sure if the first was reliable and if I could use the second because its a primary source. I suppose they are better than nothing, I will try to find a book source for the rest. I couldn't find anymore citations for his awards.
Thanks! I have been working really hard on them, trying to get the first five or so classes to B. I do plan on getting them to GA, but life is pretty busy right now so I have not had time to sit down and work on them. I should start having time in a couple of weeks. New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Hawkeye7, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

 • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
 • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
