If you need any help along the way, feel free to contact me! You can schedule a meeting by emailing me! My office hours are 12:30-2pm on Wednesdays and 9:30-10:30 pm on Thursdays. But if those don't work for you, I can totally make a different time work. I'm really interested in your idea about editing the Queer Theology page! It looks like it could benefit from some attention with content, structure, and links to other pages. A completely approachable project!

Well this is a relief! I'm glad to hear your feedback on my idea regarding, Queer Theology, I grabbed Professor Treat today requesting some literature and hope to expand this page. Hi Hatigges. I see from your talk page that things are feeling challenging for you regarding Wikipedia. I'm glad you're reaching out to Abbey for advice. I'm happy to help you, too. I'm curious how you are planning to tie queer theology to youth studies. Are there sociological or anthropological research about the topic? What are your thoughts?

Please revise your user page so all the links work. Abbey can help you with this, as could the Tea House. Anything you see in red signifies a disconnected link. For some of them, like juvenile delinquency, the issue is that the second and beyond words are not capitalized.

On your article edit, some things to think about: You did the citation and reference perfectly. The title looks interesting. In reading the rest of the article, does the place you put the sentence in look like the best fit? It takes some thinking to edit a fact into the place where it sits just right.

Feedback on user page

Hello Hatigges. I read over your user page and I think you did a great job of encapsulating the goals for our Wikipedia page for our Global Youth Studies course. I am a sociology major as well, so I find this project very intriguing! I think that researching Queer theology and Coming out would be very interesting. I was struck by how little information there was on the Queer theology page. This information could easily be extended to a global perspective.


I am not sure if we need to capitalize our links when they are incorporated into a sentence unless you are directly referring to an article. I also think that there may have been a link error in your Scavenger area of interest since it took me to a page on animal scavengers. Good luck with your project. Possible Directions

Hi there!

I’m not sure I understand—are you wanting to create a new article called ‘timepass’ or are you looking to incorporate the term into an existing article?

A few students in previous iterations of this course have done new articles about ‘youth in X country’. I checked and there isn’t an article about ‘Youth in South Africa’ yet. Doing something like this could be a good idea if you’re worried about only providing information about your specific area of interest. This way you can talk about all sorts of things that would provide a context for the concept of timepass—economy, health, family, education, leisure time, and more!

Check out Youth in Denmark, an article a student worked on last fall, for ideas about structuring and topics! Since the student made her article, lots has been added to it, but that’s the good thing about Wikipedia. If you don’t know something or have a lot of information, other people will often go in and add more.

One more advantage I see in doing an article about Youth in South Africa is all the different ways you connect it to the Wikipedia community. You can add it to ‘see also’ sections in articles about youth from different parts of the world, connect it to the South Africa page and maybe even higher traffic pages like Apartheid and HIV/AIDS. I hope this has been at least a little bit helpful for you! If you want to meet up and talk about more ideas, feel free to send me an email—my email address should be on the syllabus.

I will check out that page for sure. I think I was a bit apprehensive about starting my own page. However, it is equally troubling for me to try and "squeeze" in information on an already existing page. I think I will go with your suggestion. As you know, we should edit or create a page that interests us as individuals, this is a difficult feat because with every passing article and chapter we read, I have been fascinated! In this context, starting an original page may be best for me. Thanks so much for your help!

Proposal Feedback

Hatigges,

I’m glad to see you’ve decided to start a new article! I think your idea for a lead in paragraph is a good start because it gives readers a good understanding of the group of individuals you’re talking about. While it’s important to not be too repetitive in your lead in, I also think that you should introduce a few of the major or defining issues that youth in South Africa face. You plan on talking about language and race—are there any other things you feel are critical to introduce early on? I know you mentioned HIV/AIDS later.

Your subheadings also seem to fit not only the information you’ve found through journal articles, but also look a lot like the other Wikipedia articles for youth in other countries. It may also be useful to talk about the institutional structure of things like the education and the legal system. When can people vote? Join a political party? How many years are there of required schooling? I think that answering questions like this will help give readers a context for all the statistics and information you’re requiring. Like, imagine if someone didn’t know that you couldn’t vote in the United States until you were 18. Wouldn’t it seem like youth were really politically apathetic?

I know coding can be a really challenging part about Wikipedia, so it might be helpful if you find a structure for a Wikipedia article on youth that you like and want to mimic and to copy and paste the article into your sandbox (deleting their information and leaving the bare bones).

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. I will take your advice. Unfortunately, another student is also creating the exact same page. This particular student has had experience in South Africa with the youth population and would certainly make a valuable contribution while creating this article. Hi, Hatigges - Congratulations on putting together a solid proposal and locating good sources to proceed. Many of your plans for the South Africa proposal will work well for Youth in Nigeria. Nigeria is a very important country that is under-covered. It is the largest in Africa and has a very large youth population.

I look forward to where you will go with this. I recommend the source [1] from Unicef with stats on Nigeria.

I would also be curious for you to mention what the key concerns for Nigerian sociologists about youth.

Additional issues that need to be addressed are outlined on the nomination page by a reviewer. I did in fact try and create a hook and it did not format properly. I believe I was supposed to create a bullet, followed by a space, etc. Am I supposed to actually state the words, "Did you know" within the article, or on the nomination page? Oh, I didn't see where you tried to create one. The hook is going to appear only on the nomination page. It will be formatted to read as a question that starts with "Did you know... that... ?". The words "did you know" are excluded though. Again, see the main page below the featured article to see what they look like once they appear there. Don't worry too much about the formatting. Myself and other editors can help clean up anything improperly formatted.
